reading internal memory as ext3 partition

i had cyanogens 3.4.1 earlier today and my internal memory widget read the ext3 partition (it showed 140mb/1096mb). now when i wiped and updated to 3.4.3, my widget shows my actual internal memory from the g1 instead of the ext3 partition. i was wondering if there was any way to get it so that my widget reads off the ext3 partition again?

No because it used to read off of AUFS but switched back to symlinks.

A2SD - Can someone point me to a how-to?

Fairly new to custom ROMs... Started with Damage 2.0.2 and been updating all the way through to 2.0.7.2, but never attempted the A2SD. Can someone point me to a good how to guide on setting this up for the first time. I have found a few forum how-to's on switching SD cards with A2SD, but most things i am finding with searches are assuming it is already setup.
Please attach links or paste in a simple how-to for me. Thanks.
Also, will I be able to keep this ROM intact, (i know i will have to backup the SD card to repartition it...), but will i have to wipe the ROM as well after the ext is built to reinstall the ROM?

Make a copy of your SD card to your computer.
Reboot into recovery.
Partition Your SD card, I used 0 swap and 380 something for the ext.
Toggle MS through recovery and copy your SD card files back to your card.
Reboot.
Get Quick System Info from the market.(It shows how much memory is left on your partition, basically an easy way to tell if it worked)

What do you mean by toggle MS through recovery?

It's an option in recovery it allows you to view your SD card on you computer. MS stands for Mass Storage.

So how do I move the current apps over to the SD card once it is partitioned and up and running?

This link mentions some other methods to check if it's running. However, it's for fresh rom. Maybe others can chime in to say if the information is the same for damage control roms. As far as I know, the main trick is just partitioning the sdcard using the recovery tool as durandetto mentioned. If the rom sees an ext partition, a2sd will automatically start working. I too am using dc2.0.7.2.
For me, quick system info shows a2sd working, but my internal storage is much less than I thought it would be. I understand that app data is still stored on the internal storage, but can anyone tell me if my numbers are normal or not?

I probably have under 50 apps installed.

Your apps will automatically be installed on your sd card, at least mine were.

I have around the same amount of apps and I usually have almost 80mb after I clear my cache.

Does it matter if the apps were downloaded from the market or from another source? Because I have about 35MB of internal storage left as well but my A2SD appears to be working as well. I might have 25 apps.

Settings>applications>manage applications Sort by size and check the Browser, market, albums and others that you use regularly and clear cache. I doubt you'll gain 50mb, but you should gain something.

Isn't the point of this to not have to do that stuff? I don't see the benefit of a2sd from this thread.

Now, for a bonus. If you installed A2SD verison 2.5, you can also move your dalvik-cache to your sd card. This will free up more space on your internal storage. This is completely optional and does not affect the operation of A2SD. Simply enter the phone's console via adb shell, then type /system/bin/a2sd cache. The dalvik-cache will be relocated to /system/sd/dalvik-cache. If you do this, make sure the phone is fully booted.
You can move your dalvik-cache manually without version 2.5.
In the adb shell, type the following commands:
mkdir /system/sd/dalvik-cache
chown 777 /system/sd/dalvik-cache
cp /data/dalvik-cache/* /system/sd/dalvik-cache
rm /data/dalvik-cache
ln -s /system/sd/dalvik-cache /data/dalvik-cache
And that's it.

Using just the aps2sd 2.5 zip I always start with about 153 meg out of 159 meg and after all my apps are back using titanium backup (about 60 apps) I still have over 135 meg free. I never had this before I used this zip. I did not run the dalvik cache command either. After checking however my dalvik-cache is being moved to /system/sd/dalvik-cache. I see no diff in the phone than before I moved this to the SD either. It just frees up lots of space and lets you load many many more apps

so what exactly does one gain from doing this? just more space? i can't imagine there would be any increase in speed, and wouldn't this have a tiny negative impact on power usage? (small but theoretically still there)

I've never tried this either...
So, if your sdcard dies, could you just reflash the rom over itself and everything would be gravy?

After you've installed a new card and formatted it properly, of course.

You can flash the 2.5 over the existing a2sd! I am not sure if you have to wipe the Davlik Cache, but I would recommend it. You will probably have a lengthy boot time as the Davlik Cache is written.

Right, so I recently just heard of this thing that mounts(?) an ext partition of your sdcard to the /data partition, meaning, instead of a lousy 400 MB, I could have 8 or16 GB for apps and data, wouldn't that be amazing?

Link2sd from the market is what i use. Only tried 1gb as second partion on my play, made it 16gb on my sony tablet. I think you gaim more ram and speed things up this way and i have not noticed any slow down becase of the card. It is really great

I think what the OP is mentioning is Mounting the sd-ext AS the data partition. That way there's no 3rd party app to mess up (I've had Link2SD silently crash and accidentally get the low space warning twice). With sd-ext mounted as the data partition then you're not relying on an app running in the background monitoring app installs and then linking them to the sd card.
I believe it could be done, but I don't know the equivalent of fstab editing in android.

Yes, it's amazing and even better possible! I've achieved it on your DarkForest RC2 with DoomKernel.
- Partition your sdcard so that ext4 is the second primary partition
- Flash the zip in CWM.
- In a terminal emulator type: data2ext --enable
- With Root explorer go to system/etc/init.d and open 40data2ext
- Edit PATH=/system/xbin:/system/bin to PATH=/system/xbin:/system/bin:/sbin
- Reboot, you will have no signal
- Reboot in CWM and fix permissions.
- Now with signal enjoy your large internal memory.

On the root of the device there's a fstab and a recovery.fstab.
fstab
/data yaffs2 userdata
/cache yaffs2 cache
recovery.fstab
# mount point fstype device [device2] fstype2
/cache yaffs2 cache
/data yaffs2 userdata
/system yaffs2 system
/sdcard vfat /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
/sd-ext auto /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
Seems like if you can format the mmcblk0p2 to yaffs2 you can set data to it. I'd be hesitant to move the data partition unless I can format sd-ext to match. I'll try it sometime but my folks are in this weekend.

I'm using the Link2SD as well. I just shrunk my FAT32 partition on my SD card, created an ext2 partition about 1gig. Link2SD mounted it up, and I'm able to "Link" the apps Data, Lib and Dex files to the new 1gig partition, or leave them local. I even moved Map and the 9mb from QuickOffice Pro that I couldn't move with the normal App2SD. I'm using the signed Sony Ericsson rom that is posted on these forums somewhere. I can't find the forum post to it lately. My boot loader is also locked but I am rooted. No updated kernel unless the Sony rom did it.

IDEA: Hacking internal/external sdcard mount paths

Hello.
I'm using the latest aurora and I'd like to discuss an idea I had.
Since the U8800 has plenty internal memory and it's quite fast comparing to an average sd card, it'd be great if we could use the internal memory for the tasks that need "speed" instead of "space".
Running apps from the sd card is the perfect example!
So the idea would be, while keeping the external sdcard mounted on /mnt/sdcard, having /mnt/sdcard/Android/data, for instance, point to the «internal sdcard path»/Android/data.
What do you think would be the best solution:
- hacking the mount points?
- using links?
- other solution?
Any developer or filesystem savvy user can point the advantages or dangers of using this solution?
- e.g.: the system or some apps may check if the external sd-card is mounted before trying to read/write to /mnt/sdcard/Android/data... that would mean the system/those apss may think that path isn't reachable with the ext-sdcard unmounted, altough they can be read.
Suggestions? Rants? Ideas?

Well this is known for a while now . Quoted from my thread here:

There is this file named vold.fstab at your /system/etc/ folder, which controls which of your sdcards (Internal/External) will be mounted when you connect your phone to the PC. The last 2 lines are the only that matter. These are the two possibilities:
EXTERNAL SDCARD MOUNTED (DEFAULT):
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard auto /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.4/mmc_host
dev_mount emmc /mnt/sdcard1 14 /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.2/mmc_host
INTERNAL SDCARD MOUNTED:
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard 14 /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.2/mmc_host
dev_mount emmc /mnt/sdcard1 auto /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.4/mmc_host
change them as you wish with a root explorer or before flashing.

Make this change and every app will use the internal sdcard. Gallery works ok with images to external sdcard, it just might take a while for the first refresh. But I don't know if you'll notice any difference in terms of speed....

That's not what he talked, I think. He said that the apparel would be installed on the external sd card, but the data would be moved to the internal one. And we have speed, but the main card would be the external one.
I think its a great idea if I understood it right!

Oh I see! Sorry about that. As far as I know apps are not choosing were to put their data. They just say to the OS "I want these things to be at the sdcard" and the OS puts them at the correct place. So you can't "hack" the app to "see" at somewhere else. On the other hand the OS initialises on boot which card is the primary and which is the secondary. So my knowledge stops there and I can't imagine a way to make this separation between app data and the rest...

Maybe this cannot be done, because I think that the mapping of the partitions and mounts comes from the bootloader, but there is already the solution of resizing the data partition using the space of internal storage.

That's a great idea!
I almost don't use the so called "internal sd card", therefor I have 2GB of fast empty space being wasted.
Why not simply mounting the internal sd-card partition in the data folder and the data partition on the internal sd card folder?
I only use the internal sd card to hold ringtones and other small stuff that I need to be in accessible 100% of the time, so a few hundred MB are enough!

So all we'd need to do would be, editing the fstab before flashing it.

Regarding the my first idea... I don't think one can simply mount a path on another path. We'd need a "virtual" device pointing to /mnt/sdcard-internal/data/ then mount that virtual device on /mnt/sdcard-external/data/.

would result in ISO-images to show up as a mounted filesystem in the Places sidepanel in Nautilus. The -n is required because otherwise bindfs tries to use the allow_other FUSE option, which by default is not allowed for regular users (if you use bindfs in /etc/fstab this is not a problem).
The first directory you give is the existing one, the second directory you give is an empty directory under which the contents of the existing one will appear.

So, bindfs depends on FUSE... and there's a port of fuse to android: https://github.com/seth-hg/fuse-android but looking at the README I get the feeling that it's not really working. The last step would be having a kernel with FUSE support... and regarding that, I have no idea, how easy it is to get a kernel like that for our U8800 :\

Finding such a solution to expand the DATA partition indirectly would be great!
I used to apply genokolar's custom partition method as "1.2G DATA + 1.46G INTERNAL SD" before, but i found out that it has some issues with Official 2.3 Roms. One of them -the most important IMHO- is the BOOTLOOP problem occurring in some specific situations!!!

(Seems that I don't encounter the bootloops on Custom Roms, but i'm not %100 sure and never will be )
So i unfortunately gave up using it, and revert to the stock partition .

I still have to gather more information on the official update "modus operandi".
My goal is to simply reformat both partitions and then swap their mount points.
If the official update formats the partitions before applying the flashing official ROM files, then partitioning changes shouldn't cause any failure on the official update.
But like I said, I'm still yet to confirm that info.
Gen's idea was great (I learned a lot just by looking at his scripts) but resizing partitions has its dangers.
Since "no one" really uses the internal memory, why not simply exchange its room with /data, right?

This would be awesome! I would love to have 2gb for apps, instead of cluttering my phone.. plus the 2gb of internal storage are just a waste for me.. I never use them.. so this would be great!

[How-To][P3100][CM11][dataOnExt] use second partition of external SD-Card as /data

Hi,
I was looking for a tutorial how to use a second partition of the external SD card as /data partition. 1 day and about 10 complete system wipes later...
How I mounted the second partition oft my sdcard as /data:
You have:
a P3100 (not tested on others yet)
Cyanogenmod 11 Rom
a fast micro sdcard -32GB
Step 1 prepare the sdcard: you need a fat32 partition and a Ext4 partition (use a PC with a cardreader and gparted or something like that)
Step 2 For the sake of simplicity, I am going to assume you already installed your rom and the tablet is rooted
Form a terminal with su:
create a directory
Mount the second partition (/dev/block/mmcblk1p2) on that directory
copy -a -v /data/* yourDirectory/
Step 3 - modifing the rom and fstab.espresso
Now you have to extract the boot.IMG Form your rom, using dsixda's Kitchen
In case you have no idea how to use this kitchen (like me) here is someone doing exact what we need
After changing in the BOOT-EXTRACTED directory, you have to edit the fstab.espresso...
simply replace the mount source of
Code:
/data
with
Code:
/dev/block/mmcblk1p2
save the file and rebuild the rom
Step 4 install your new rom with cwm and reboot...
If everything went well the second partition of your sdcard is now mounted as /data
My internal storage is now (in the storage view of settings) about 20GB big and i will never have to use link2sd or apps like that again
Nice side effect the access to the highspeed sdcard is a bit faster than the access to the internal storage
You have to modify all updates oft your rom in the same way before installing them
ToDo write a script to automate the process
PS.: plz tell me if something is unclear or not understandable or this is the wrong place for this thread OR you know a shorter way to do this (thats my first post here)

Yep its working, the complete /data is on the sdcard now including /data/data and /data/media, my internal storage is now about 20gb big xD
I am not really sure if there are crazy symlinks in /data but atm i have no problems
The "real" sd partition is still fat32 formated and used as before the modification, and because i didn't mount the second partition anywhere (only as /data) the rest of the system doesn't know that it exists...
(problem: there is now a unused /data partition on my internal tablet storage and i have no real idea how to use this free storage)
