So there seems to be a big misunderstanding on how and what kind of sd cards can be used in the note 10.1. I have seen a lot of posts talking about whether or not you can use a 64gb sd card, whether it needs to be formatted, partitioned, and I have even seen posts describing a 2gb file limit with unformatted cards. I have good news!
These people are all completely misinformed!
The truth is you can put an unformatted, unpartitioned 64gb sd card into a note 10.1 out of the box! (Both the chip and device require NO MODIFICATION)
I have completed this successfully on three note 10.1's GT-N8013 (us variant of the note) both on ICS AND JB.
My success came with a San Disk 64gb Class 10 sd card.
I have also used san disk 32gb non class 10.
Both cards require ABSOLUTELY NO FORMATTING, OR PARTITIONING TO WORK OUT OF THE BOX!!!!
Oh and 2gb file size limit per file is bs in regards to any sd card I have EVER used!!
Downloaded a 5 and 8 gb file simultaneously last night.
Enjoy Your Droids now with extra memory!! Oh and look up about how to switch internal storage with external storage. (It enables you to use a 64gb sd card for your apps.. more games!!) Max from rootgalaxynote.com has a guide on it. Theres other guides to but max writes fairly intuitive guides in my experience.
Never had trouble with the 32gb or lower cads however the 64gb card was a bit different. On the 1st version of ICS it didn't recognize exFAT cards. This was a problem as when you formatted the sd card in your note it partitioned the card into a 32gb FAT32 partition and an unformatted partition. This destroyed a couple of 64gb cards for me.
This was fixed in the ICS update tha samsung released to most of the world and exFAT support was added. If you are unlucky enough to get a tablet running the 1st edition of ICS - I believe it ended in ALGA - then you can destroy your new sd card pretty easily even though others like yourself had no problems...

That doesn't explain all the recent posts, nor does it explain the idea people have about file size limitations.:good:
1. the file limitation is with fat and fat32 this is with any device both pc tablet etc.
2. All 32gb notes can use both 32 and 64gb with no problem.
3. If you have a 8010 16gb ver on ics you cannot format the 64gb, you would have to use a pc for an example to format the sd to fat32.

Why did it destroy your card?
Couldn't you just repartition the card to one 64G partition? On a desktop if you have to.
Put in a 64gb exFAT card in yesterday (16 gb Note WiFi), firmware N8010OXXALI2. Worked immediatly without formatting! No file size limit, I think the file size limit only applies to 'physical' disks, hard drives etc.

No, this is the ICS release from September I'm running (see also second post in this topic for clarification), it already supports exFAT.

My success was originally with ICS. Apparently the first ICS released was incompatible.. I don't buy it but that's what I heard. I also read that the 16GB models aren't compatible. Same goes there I don't buy it.. but I would love if anyone running latest ICS or JB on a 16GB model could either confirm, or report these rumors false.:good:
Is this proof enough?

Transcend 64gb pre formatted fat32 usb stick, via cable works fine on GN8010 16gb.
But for some reason I had to restart the tablet, for it to recognise it.......otherwise it just will not see it?
Strange but with a restart it works fine? Same with 4gb usb stick....might be my cheap non Samsung £1.99 usb cable though?:screwy:

Windows recognized the 2 partitions but wouldn't format it exFAT as 1 partition.
Used Easius partition manager to delete the partitions but something went screwy and it killed it instead.
Still have the cards floating around, might try to get fixed by sandisk as there is a lifetime guarantee... Just need the time to do it...

No the file format is what has the restriction. Fat32 I think has a 4 gig file limit and ntfs has I think a 2 tb limit as a partition size, but no file limit. Also exfat has no file limit "I think" and an extreamly high partition limit, but like fat32 it doesnt have the securties and options ntfs has

Of course an "unformatted" card won't work!
Any storage device, removable or fixed, must be formatted before it can work under any operating system, Android, Windows, iOS, Linux or whatever.
You presumably mean formatted as it comes out of the packet? In which case the answer is that most micro-sdxc cards (Xtended capacity above 32gb) are today supplied formatted exFat. Which, as everyone says will work in any Note 10.1, JB or ICS, other than a unit supplied before September 2012, which was never subject to the ICS update in September which introduced exFat recognition. There must be very few of these units left that have not been updated.
Both 64gb sdxc cards that I have were formatted exFat and worked straight out of the packet.
lol

Yes that is what plug in play implies derp-a-derp.. Stop trying to sound like you are in someway proving this wrong.. Clearly as I have stated(and you so eloquently googled...) Lol all SD cards are going to come ex fat.. And no formatting generally implies a format of the card done by the user..
And about your FW idea the thing was shipped on ICS. The first ICS update was a patch that added ex fat. There is and never was a note 10.1 running less than ICS..
***Please anyone who has anything to say other than great I'm glad it works. GTFO.. ***
If you didn't realize it you already only further proved my point in trying to suggest otherwise.. Troll on!:good:

Format it in fat 32, when you buy it is formatted in exfat, and you don't have the kernel driver for it.

[from my Galaxy Note]
Good luck trying to format it to FAT32.
It doesn't work for me, on Win7 Prof. x64 with different programs and an SDXC-compatible USB-reader.
My SanDisk 64 GB mSDXC card was DOA (dead on arrival).
The replacement mSDXC was directly detected in my Note and ready to use after a very short formatting (less than 10 sec.).
So, if you can't read your card on the PC, it's maybe flawed.

Sandisk 64gb Working
Hi Guys
I have just put in my Sandisk 64gb micro sd xc1 card into my Note.
In settings go to STORAGE. My new card was not showing.
While still in STOREAGE press; Format SD Card.
Once the phone has done this the card shows up. Well it has on mine.
just copied everything on to new card from the original 32 gb card and everythings fine. Just loads more roooooooooommmmm!!!!
Try above.
Do as the friend above suggests. I also have it and it works great!

That's what I had to do too. It formats to Ext3/4 though so I can't plug the card straight into my Windows PC - I have to mount the phone instead which is a pain and massively slow to transfer files by comparison. I'm tempted to install Linux for the convenience of directly inserting the card into the PC for Tx speed!

Hi,
I have tried that Fat32formatter on mine.
I was able to delete the NTFS partition. When I then initiated the 64gb card it looked set to go.
I then clicked on format and got the message that it could not do it....
Dodgy card?
Anybody else have any pointers here.

Right then - I am using Mint Linux via VMware on my mac. I successfully formatted to ext3 but the Note would not recognise it.
The same occurred with ext4.
From what I can gather ext3 is not supported by the kernel. Is ext4? and if so, can the SD Card be set up with ext4?
The speed gains are apparently huge when compared to FAT.

Well , just for efficiency and speed - and to try to demonstrate the difference between fat32 and ext4 I guess.
ext4 is greatly superior to fat32 in every way. Fat32 is exactly that.... "Fat" and getting on a bit (although 32 is not that old really)
But thank you for your input, of course. If I find a way of getting ext3 or 4 working, I'll let ya know.

Lol! Am just in the same atm...
Windows doesn't format it, insists in extFAT.
Linux only wants to format 32GB.
Note formats it flawlessly in a few seconds
However:
I do have a hard time copying files over... last I tried (with the card plugged in on an usb adaptor to the pc) it copied until reaching the last 16GB, then it failed. So far so good. The card showed 16GB available, but couldn't put anything on it anymore.
Thus I went and deleted everything (yes, hidden files, too). And guess what? It still showed 16GB used...
This thing is weird... Doing a final try now, with the card in the phone, mounted on the pc, copying over... I'll report back in a few hours, ugh...

You might want to try disktool in linux - it worked first time on mine when I deleted all of the partition tables etc. It then set the partition table as fat32 LBA (I used to know what logical block addressing was about) as I think that LBA overcomes the 32gig limit.
The alternative is that perhaps you have a 32gig rebadged and set up to give the appearance of a 64? It used to happen when the 32gigs were expensive... lots of fakers out there.

Don't know what version of Fat32Fmt you have but the older ones only used to work if you mounted the card/HDD to F:\.
Even then it only worked up to the normal Fat32 32GB limit on the drives I have managed to format (even though they 'appeared' to format to 250GB, etc correctly)
Your best bet is to see if there are custom format tools on the Sandisk website. I've been meaning to but haven't got around to it.
hey guys
is this right what im reading here???, im confused because the specs say the note can handle 32gig max, is 64 gig deffo working and if so, can someone advice me if it has to be a certain class or type, this is really good news.
As you all hopefully know, the Note Can take up to 64GB MicroSDXC cards. But, what you may not know is the trouble that with comes with getting one to work. Its actually relatively simple When you know how to do it. l spent hours tonight trying to do it.
Originally the sd will probably be in the NTFS format created by Microsoft, which is understandable since its the biggest OS on computers.
Upon entering your SD onto the device, you should see that it wants you to format it. This is due to android not supporting NTFS. The only structure it supports is FAT32.
But, here's where your options come in! You have the choice of either making your device NTFS compatible (Note that this requires root), or reform making the storage device to FAT32. As my device is not yet rooted to test the NTFS support, l will only go over the reformatting process. Unfortunately, since I'm a new member I can't post links. Therefore, you'll need to trust google to guide you to what you want. But if you want to use the tool I used just Google "Kioskea HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool"
Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any damage that you Cause to your device, computer or SD card while carrying out this method. It is your own decision to do this. This method should cause no harm to any system health, but, as with anything on a computer, errors can occur. Also, take note that the more you format something, the shorter its life will be.
Insert your SD card into the computer to format it. To format to FAT32, you will need to download a third party partition program, as windows withdrew the ability to format to FAT32 in an attempt to push more people on to NTFS. Only storage mediums with FAT32 as their default can format to it.
Once you've downloaded and installed the software, load it up and select your sd card and FAT32, as well as quick format then start. You should then insert it into your PHONE as the tablet doesn't seem to do this next step correctly. When inserted into your phone, it should say that the sd needs formatted. Do this then eject it and transfer it to your tablet and say yes to the dialogue that appears. And that's it in a nutshell! This can be applied for every android device possible.
Users report the newer note 10.1 updates will format 64gb cards into exFat which will allow for files bigger the 4gb (like HD movies).
Yes, i can confirm that if you update to the pulled ota update firmware, your tablet can format the 64gb sdxc to exFat and be read.

@Itchiee I'd seen reports of updates being able to support 64GB cards but that's all I was able to find. I only just got my Note 10.1 and it says on both the internal update and update via Kies that my tablet is up to date. Although, I am from the UK that may be why. I assumed my tablet was rolled out with the latest update. I tried exFAT on my tablet and it refused to work and was throwing the same error's at me.

@vndnguyen I recommended the "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" as compared to the standard Windows one as Microsoft pulled formatting support for anything except exFAT and NTFS. The only time Microsoft will let you format to FAT32 is if it was the native of that device, such as a flash drive. So, the difference between the two programs, is that the "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" can format to FAT32, as where Windows cannot.

This is because the native format of 32GB MicroSD cards and below were FAT32. Like I said, if the device is native FAT32, then Windows will allow a format of that.

Sorry for not replying in my last post. I never seen your comment. There's some slight differences between FAT32 and exFAT. The main difference a common user should know is that FAT32 can only hold, and transfer a maximum of 4GB, as where exFAT does not have a size limit. That's why it's the "preferred" method. But, FAT32 is more popular as it's been around longer and is supported by more platforms than exFAT. If you want to know more about the differences, try a google search. Unfortunately I can't post links just yet to help you out with that. But, I'd recommend trying the exFAT wiki page. The stuff you'll find can get fairly technical. Just a heads up.
thanks for your reply, the sandisk card i am getting says its been made for android devices, will that means its probably already in the exfat format when i get it?

This appears to be the same one that I ordered. Mine came as NTFS but it may have just been a hiccup for mine as everyone else is apparently exFAT. One thing I also noticed is that the page says it is both class six and class 10. Just to clarify - It is class 10.

This is because Samsung claim that their Note 10.1 can support exFAT. In reality, the support for it doesn't work at the moment. What you will need to do is reformat it to FAT32, and it should work. If it still doesn't work after this, put the SD into your mobile phone then use the reformat option on the phone. The reformatting does not work on the Note 10.1, so you can't reformat it on that.
Let me know how it goes.

when i put the sd in my laptop, the 2 options that let me choose is ntfs and exfat.how can i reformat it to fat32?
Finally!!! Those who use 64GB or bigger cards can use exFAT. I can confirm it works as I'm using it right now. No more 4,5GB file size limit! (tested writing 6,5GB mkv video to the card, worked without any issues) Writing big files to the card is about 10-11MB/s (when I was using fat32 it was 4-5MB/s). It's a shame that it doesn't work in CWM though (can't mount - gives me error). But I think devs will come up with solution for this quickly. At least Phil in his thread about Touch CWM said that he will provide fix when official LS7 will be released. So now you know and you can enjoy!
SMALL UPDATE:
If SGN says that your card is broken and needs formating than you should let it format the card. Mine was formated in Windows with SDFormatter application and still SGN gave me message that I need to format the card. After format in SGN it works as it should.
SMALL UPDATE2:
If you decide to buy a 64GB or bigger card for your SGN it would mean that it almost certainly would be SDXC micro exFAT formatted. In specification there is only said that card readers even if they are compatible with SDHC, might not be compatible with SDXC cards. And that would have been ok, but in my case my old SDHC compatible Imono card reader was destroying my SDXC cards! Who would have suspect it? It happened 3 times and I was able to use my card after I bought a new card reader certified for SDXC and whole operation of exchanging broken cards took almost 2,5 months! So be careful where you put you 60 dollar card into! Old reader might read the card properly but it can damage while writing stuff to it.
It's not really that important if you plan on using your card only with SGN. At least I don't have any issues with it now. But then there wasn't JB for SGN and so I was trying to use NTFS and so I needed a card reader.
waow very nice news thank you
So happy about this wait for the official update to come!
best news i heard today. thanks.
- post from SGN.
Does this mean we can use files larger than 4gb?
Well, it should. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT states that exFAT should be able to support file size of 16 Exibyte

can i formate my internal SD to exfat??
will it work.. ??
I dont need SD card for my use.. Just need 1gb of the total space in it..
I didn't try that, but I'm pretty sure it's not possible, as exFAT doesn't come from Google and it's not open standard (I think Microsoft is selling liceneses for this). Even though Android on diffrent brands of smartphones is modyfied here and there to accomodate the devices and enhance user experience it's still Android and I've never heard that android is supporting exFAT. Even if what I say is wrong (I'm still half noobish so it's possible ) there would be no real benefit from using exFAT on internal sdcard (well apart from "unlimited" file size - like it would matter on 11GB of free space anyway ) as the system was designed for hotswapping/external devices and we have internal sdcard which can't be removed.
What's more I have better writing speeds on my internal card (12MB/s) than on external 64GB exFAT (max 10-11MB/s). I don't really understand what you mean by "I dont need SD card for my use.. Just need 1gb of the total space in it." You think that beacuse of exFAT you will have 1GB more space on your internal sdcard?
It said mine was broken,bla,bla,..reformatted, then week later said same thing!
Don't want to wipe valuable stuff or take it out all the time to back up

I don't really understand what you're trying to get across here? If you put a 32GB+ exFAT format in your SGN, it will tell you the card is corrupt and ask you to format it (which you should do and which you also mention in your update), which will change it to FAT32 format, so you lose the exFAT format.
Am I missing something here?
Today received sandisk 64 gb sdxc. It was formatted exFat out of the box. I copied all data from old ed to new one. All work fine except clockwork. Clockwork can't mount exFat. Installed rom: Ultimate N7000 xxls7 v4. Kernel: Phil's v3.5
Guys,
The inbuild storage space is less for me. I have a 16GB class 4 sd card which is also full and i need more space. I am planning to buy a 64 GB Class 10 microsd card. Will note support the 64GB class 10 microsd card?
The post above yours sais it does.

I'm sorry but who needs 4+ gb files on their phone?
Just format your 64gb card using this tool! Regular windows fat32 format is capped at 32gb, but this tool will allow you to format the whole 64gb. This way you can have both 64gb storage and the card recognized by custome recovieries. Works great on my Note2 and S3.
Ok, so I've just bought a Samsung class 10 SDXC UHS-1 card. I'm about to put it in the phone and then I read all about people having problems reading files, and wanting to download something to allow it to be formatted to fat32, etc. Could anyone please throw any light on this, as to how it it best formatted, and to what fat type, and possibly help me to understand why these people are having issues?
Personally I would have said let the phone format it, seeing as it's going to be using it?
1. Put it in the phone.
2. Press "Erase everything on SD-card".
3. ????
4. PROFIT!
No need to worry about formatting, the stock kernel only supports FAT32, and I believe EXT3 & 4, but you don't need to worry about those.
Some people have problems because they buy the cheapest 64GB microSD card available, and you know that cheap card = cheap NAND, which causes corruption of files and random unmounts.
You mean exFAT? That's what the phone formats it as, and the PC does too.
I am using exFAT because I put 4GB+ files there. FAT32 can't support that.

I did not know it had ExFAT, but I just put the card into the phone and pressed "Erase everything on SD card".
Well, I've put shed loads on it and no problems so far, and in my card reader I get up to 16MB/s write, so it's all good. I guess problems are just down to the people who buy cheap knock-offs?
I didn't even do a format on my SanDisk 32gb class10.
I just popped it in and it works.
Think I might format to exfat though so I can store larger files.

I got an S4 yesterday (USD 665 here in Muscat for the unlocked 16GB model) and put in the 64GB card I used before on Note II. It's formatted as exFAT.
On first power on, the phone complained that memory card was damaged and needed reformatting. Bummer! The S4 doesn't support exFAT???
I ignored the error and continued setting up the phone. After a few minutes I checked Settings->Storage and was given the option to mount the memory card. I tried and it mounted without any problems! Phew!
FAT32 is the way to go. Later, if you install a custom ROM exFAT won't be supported.

Not if you have files larger than 4GB, like full HD movies. FAT32 doesn't support files of that size.

I can confirm that my rooted i9505 (jfltexx from Vodafone Ireland) does support exFAT directly. I have a Samsung 64GB card which came preformatted with exFAT and it worked. I later formatted it directly in the phone and it was exFAT again. No problems whatsoever.
If you want to install a new kernel, however, you might get into trouble. faux123 wrote the following in his thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2273437 for the new faux kernel:
"NOTE: This kernel DOES NOT SUPPORT exFAT formatted 64 GB SDCards! In order to use 64 GB SDCards, you need to format it to NTFS, then use NTFSMount from Play Store to access your 64GB SDCard.
(This is due to LACK OF SOURCE CODE from Samsung/Microsoft for exFAT. Samsung licensed Microsoft's CLOSED SOURCE exFAT implementation. But Samsung under agreement with Microsoft DOES NOT release the source code and therefore we CANNOT build any support for exFAT formatted 64 GB SDCards)"

That's wrong. Just trying to clarify. I am running a 64g card in my tab 2 10.1" I have it formatted as fat32. It is a Sandisk. I would say to move everything over to your computer and reformat it. Then use the test disk program and make sure it passes. I don't have any lag with songs or data. I use Foldermount with several large data files programs and they run fine.

It's actually half wrong. Because originally our device was released running ICS, which only supports up to 32GB external storage, this is what the spec states. HOWEVER, now it has a Jellybean update it can run 64GB external storage (since Jellybean can support up to 64GB cards).
So to clear this up, if you're still on ICS, you can only have up to 32GB cards. I suggest updating to Jellybean if you want to run 64GB cards. If you are running Jellybean already you need to format the SDXC 64GB card on your PC using the Fat32 format before using on your device.
It's also worth noting that if you are storing files over 4GB or around 4GB on the card it WILL run very, very slow.
Ics also supports 64gb
Worked on Sony Ericsson Xperia arc and Asus tf300
You need to format it in the actual device and as said above file size limit of 4gb and fat 32

Wrong again, well half wrong, 64GB do indeed work on ICS just they have to be formatted to fat32, JB adds support for the native format of 64GB cards.
as for the OP's issue, I use Poweramp and when I first got this tablet I had the occasional skip so what I did was go into its setting and increase the Audio Buffer size.
Screenshot and happened

That's wrong as well.
64 Gb cards are normally formatted using the Microsoft proprietary exFAT file system. Microsoft somehow managed to arm-twist media manufacturers into using exFAT, which only some versions of Linux support.
If you format your 64 Gb or larger card using the free, unencumbered FAT32 file system, it'll work just fine with Android.
exFAT does have some real advantages, as the overhead (wasted space used by filesystem bookeeping) is lower. And exFAT allows very large files (more than 4 Gb.)
So,there's nothing special about 64 Gb cards other than the default filesystem. Reformat using FAT32 and you'll be fine.

In other words, you're right. And I'm right. You're telling people that they're officially unsupported (which is quite correct), and I'm telling them how to use them,
If we only discussed what was officially supported, xda-developers would be a pretty empty site.
