Beware 64gb sdxc

Not happy...
Today I tried my SanDisk 64gb sdxc card in my note 10.1... I've been using it in my 5.3" galaxy note for months. It mounted and read just fine in the Note 10.1, so I copied all the data off it, planning to use a 32gb card in my other note.
After I copied the data, I put the card back in the Note 10.1, and it said "blank card or unsupported file system"
To cut a long story short, the card is now corrupted and can't be formatted in either windows or the original Note.
So, if you're using this card in your original Note, DON'T put it in the 10.1!

Format it with FAT 32.

Ditto: format with FAT32, most SDXC cards are formatted ExFAT and that's not compatible with the Note 10.1. Use the tablet or a third party utility to format if you're a Windows user since Win7 wants to format using ExFat rather than FAT32 (Mac OS X can format large cards in FAT32). Drawbacks? FAT32 only supports individual file sizes up to 4 gigs per file.

I've tried formatting it, it's toasted. Windows disk manager says it's 30.6gb, but won't format it because it says it's write protected... Neither of my notes will format it, they both say it's blank, and when I try to format they say it's currently being checked... I even tried SD Formatter from www.sdcard.org, and it says the card is write protected...

this may sound kind of dumb, but if you use an SD card adaptor for your micro SD, did you check the lock slider on your SD hard? i was not able to format my microSD card on my note and was having the same issues with the write protect on my computer but i realized later on that my lock slider kept being pushed into the lock position whenever i slide my card into my reader. so, i unlocked it and carefully slid my card into my reader to make sure it doesn't lock. i formatted my card to fat32 on my computer using EASEUS Partition Master (http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm). it's easy to use and free. works great

I did the same, don't forget to set the cluster size to 32 for a 64gb card. Works great.

Yes, I've tried it in 2 different card readers. I just tried EASEUS Partition Master and it can't do anything with the card either, the system reports the card as 30.6MB unallocated.

I used the microSD to SD converter which came with my Sandisk and plug it directly into the notebook's SD slot.
I would say try another computer (or notebook).

After the latest update, the Note 10.1 reads and formats exfat SD chips just fine.

There have been a number of reports of broken 64gb cards that will only format to 30.6gb, check this http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/550328-64gb-cards.htmldiscussion.
I think that 30.6gb is what you normally would get from a 32gb card.

I've had same problem with sdxc but after firmware update SD works ok.

i've not had a problem with my sandisk 64gb sdxc card

I tosted a mounth ago my first 64GB SDXC the same day because I was not aware of what I should use and do to make it compatible with most devices.
First of all, the card is SDXC with exFAT, for that you HAVE to use an adapter compatible for that card, like Mobilelite 3G.
I put that card in my old card reader and after try to copy into the card a file ISO of 6GB the card crashed.
After that the card was not recognized.
Second mistake, I used not appropriate Software to format the card, from CMD in W7, Gparted Live, to many other.
You HAVE to use specific tools like FAT32Format or MiniTool Partition because this tools are made to do not delete the "Protected Area" which is needed to let working the card.
so,
step 1; Open the Blister Package and put the card into compatible SDXC Card Reader.
step 2; Format with FAT32 Format.
After that the card will work fantastically with ANY device and no complain at all.
Now I got my second 64GB SDXC formatter in Fat32 and my OLD HTC Touch Diamond 2 see the card with full capacity of 60GB!
Amazing! Right?

If its a new card you should have a warranty get it replaced.
I had a similar proble with a 16 gb card on my optimux 2x and from Sandisk itself. When I inserted it recognized and then the card was fried fortunately it was replaced by the seller in couple of days I still have the old card as they did not bother to take it back.
That time i thought it was a fake

Ok, so in this case you can do this way;
step 1; Open the Blister Package and put the card into compatible SDXC Card Reader.
step 2; Use h2testw to test the card if it's fake.
step 3; when you know is good format with the right tool.
They do not bother you to take the card back? Strange? And the second one is good?

64GB MicroSD Card - The how-to guide!

As you all hopefully know, the Note Can take up to 64GB MicroSDXC cards. But, what you may not know is the trouble that with comes with getting one to work. Its actually relatively simple When you know how to do it. l spent hours tonight trying to do it.
Originally the sd will probably be in the NTFS format created by Microsoft, which is understandable since its the biggest OS on computers.
Upon entering your SD onto the device, you should see that it wants you to format it. This is due to android not supporting NTFS. The only structure it supports is FAT32.
But, here's where your options come in! You have the choice of either making your device NTFS compatible (Note that this requires root), or reform making the storage device to FAT32. As my device is not yet rooted to test the NTFS support, l will only go over the reformatting process. Unfortunately, since I'm a new member I can't post links. Therefore, you'll need to trust google to guide you to what you want. But if you want to use the tool I used just Google "Kioskea HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool"
Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any damage that you Cause to your device, computer or SD card while carrying out this method. It is your own decision to do this. This method should cause no harm to any system health, but, as with anything on a computer, errors can occur. Also, take note that the more you format something, the shorter its life will be.
Insert your SD card into the computer to format it. To format to FAT32, you will need to download a third party partition program, as windows withdrew the ability to format to FAT32 in an attempt to push more people on to NTFS. Only storage mediums with FAT32 as their default can format to it.
Once you've downloaded and installed the software, load it up and select your sd card and FAT32, as well as quick format then start. You should then insert it into your PHONE as the tablet doesn't seem to do this next step correctly. When inserted into your phone, it should say that the sd needs formatted. Do this then eject it and transfer it to your tablet and say yes to the dialogue that appears. And that's it in a nutshell! This can be applied for every android device possible.

Yes, i can confirm that if you update to the pulled ota update firmware, your tablet can format the 64gb sdxc to exFat and be read.

I am using sandisk 64G sdxc card in my N8000 (Hong Kong version N8000ZSALI1 firmware) which natively supports exFAT format. It is fine so far. But I do not dare to copy large file from USB cable via Kies. I take out the card and put into SDXC card reader for large files copying.

@Tubgirl my one came formatted with NTFS, rather than exFAT. So, I had assumed the rest were like this. It's strange that mine exFAT. :s

@Itchiee I'd seen reports of updates being able to support 64GB cards but that's all I was able to find. I only just got my Note 10.1 and it says on both the internal update and update via Kies that my tablet is up to date. Although, I am from the UK that may be why. I assumed my tablet was rolled out with the latest update. I tried exFAT on my tablet and it refused to work and was throwing the same error's at me.

@vndnguyen I recommended the "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" as compared to the standard Windows one as Microsoft pulled formatting support for anything except exFAT and NTFS. The only time Microsoft will let you format to FAT32 is if it was the native of that device, such as a flash drive. So, the difference between the two programs, is that the "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" can format to FAT32, as where Windows cannot.

I have just ordered a 64 gb sandisk android sdxc card, if i am not to bothered about transfering large files, is there much difference between using exfat and fat32?

I don't have 64G sd card. I have 8GB sd card and I can format it as FAT32 on my Windows 7 PC

This is because the native format of 32GB MicroSD cards and below were FAT32. Like I said, if the device is native FAT32, then Windows will allow a format of that.

Sorry for not replying in my last post. I never seen your comment. There's some slight differences between FAT32 and exFAT. The main difference a common user should know is that FAT32 can only hold, and transfer a maximum of 4GB, as where exFAT does not have a size limit. That's why it's the "preferred" method. But, FAT32 is more popular as it's been around longer and is supported by more platforms than exFAT. If you want to know more about the differences, try a google search. Unfortunately I can't post links just yet to help you out with that. But, I'd recommend trying the exFAT wiki page. The stuff you'll find can get fairly technical. Just a heads up.

This is the one I got and I had to format on my Defy first. Then my tablet excepted it, for now I can only put movies, photos on. Any apps you want on doesn't work as of yet which was a big let down for me.

This appears to be the same one that I ordered. Mine came as NTFS but it may have just been a hiccup for mine as everyone else is apparently exFAT. One thing I also noticed is that the page says it is both class six and class 10. Just to clarify - It is class 10.

Jayjay, there are apps that that allow you to do this. I would recommend trying App2SD, Link2SD and Directory Bind. DB can be found by searching the xda forums.

Yeah some require root. I tried some today, as well. They don't work due to the memory config. Seems to be happen to all new releases, as if they're trying to block stuff like that. With all the trouble Google and manufacturers are going to to stop us rooting and stuff like that, Android will soon be as non-combustible as iOS!

i bought my note 10.1 and a microsd sandisc 64gb. it was exfat by default.but my note did not recognise that.so i take it of,i put it in my laptop and i reform it to exfat also.but again nothing.my note is not recognising it.does anyone have any idea why is that?and what can i do to make it work?

This is because Samsung claim that their Note 10.1 can support exFAT. In reality, the support for it doesn't work at the moment. What you will need to do is reformat it to FAT32, and it should work. If it still doesn't work after this, put the SD into your mobile phone then use the reformat option on the phone. The reformatting does not work on the Note 10.1, so you can't reformat it on that.
Let me know how it goes.

How to format 64gb micro sd card to Fat32 to work on SGS3

I faced a problem with my 64gb. Sandisk micro SD and I solved the issue and I thought about posting the solution here that might help some of you.
so... the issue I faced is how to get TWRP recovery or CWM to mount my Ex sd card.
basically the problem is that the card is formatted in exfat or NTFS and in both ways it won't be recognized by TWRP and the only way to formate it in fat32 is by only one software because windows can not format more than 32gb in Fat32.
and here is how:
first: download EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition from this link http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html?tag=mncol%3bpop&cdlPid=10982635
Second : Now you can see a list of all of your hard drives. Note the one highlighted in blue on the grid. This is my 64GB MicroSDXC card in my USB Card Reader. Obviously the location of your card in the list may differ dependant on the number of drives in your computer
You’ll need to right-click on the drive in the list representing your 64GB MicroSDXC card and click “Format partition”
Third : You need to select FAT32 for the File System, and 32KB for Cluster Size.
EaseUS doesn’t immediately apply the changes you specify. Instead, it queues them up so that you can review and revise them before you commit to having the program affect those changes. then we need to press the Apply button.
that's it ... now you can enjoy your 64gb MicroSd and you can mount it in TWRP or CWM recovery .

I was planning to create two partitions with minitools formatting tool, one was supoosed to be 16 GB FAT32 and the remaning part would be 48GB NTFS, and I was planning to use, Paragon NTFS to mount that NTFS partition on GNOTE.
But because after formatting on PC it became 32 GB I couldn't do that.
Any suggestions ?

thanks so much for this. I just bought a new 64 gb card for my phone and it "corrupted" on me twice. I plugged it in to my comp and it was exFat. Followed the directions here and formatted to fat32. Now I have to copy my files again. I hope this works. Oh and according to my phone, there is no update 4.1.2 for it. I am on 4.0.4 and it cannot find any updates so that doesnt really work for me.

I had been trying to do thiis for 4 hours when i saw ur post! Thanks sooo much..at first i got an error while formatting, but then i quit all other applications as recommended by the software and it woeked perfectly on my HTC Sensation. Thank You Soooo much:laugh::good:

I was looking to format my card to Fat32 so I can use a Paranoid Android Rom. What happens when I want to flash another ROM and the new ROM is a Tochwiz Rom... Will I need to unformat the card or reverse it someway? I'm a newbie to this stuff.

No. Touchwizz roms and aokp/cm10 roms can both read fat32 sd cards. Because exfat is licenced from Microsoft AOKP can't incorporate the drivers needed to get exfat formatted card to work.
Short story is both roms can read/write to fat32 formatted sd cards. Only Touchwizz roms can read/write to exfat formatted cards. Unless you copy a lot of single files over 4GB in size stick with fat32 formatting.

I tried what you suggested. However, the partition stayed at 32 GB only instead of 64 GB. Any more suggestions.

I also have the same problem, my 64 GB card has become 32 GB one. I used the suggested program to partition but still 32 GB. Can you explain what is Gnote and how to use it. Thanks

Did you ever find out how to revert back to 64 GB. I am exactly in a similar situation with a 64 GB converted to 32 GB and do not know what to do?
Edit: I have used guiformat program also.

You can still use your card normally. I've done the inverse way (Touchwiz to AOKP) and works too.
The point is: Touchwiz based ROMs have support to FAT32 and exFAT. AOKP ones have support only to FAT32.

That's another point OP have forgotten. Your card reader must support microSDXC cards. Most readers support only microSDHC and these are maximum 32Gb storage. microSDXC has elevated this limit to 2TB. I had to buy myself a new card reader due to that incompatibility.
There's a fragment in Wikipedia which explains this situation:
SDXC cards are pre-formatted with Microsoft's proprietary and patented exFAT file system, which the host device might not support. Since Microsoft does not publish the specifications of exFAT and its use requires a non-free license, many alternative or older operating systems do not support exFAT for technical or legal reasons. The use of exFAT on some SDXC cards may render SDXC unsuitable as a universal exchange medium, as an SDXC card that uses exFAT would not be usable in all host devices. Since the FAT32 file system supports volumes up to the SDXC's maximum theoretical capacity of 2 TB as well, a user could reformat an SDXC card to use FAT32 for greater portability between computers (see below). FAT32-formatted SDXC cards can be used in a host device built for SDHC if the host device can handle 64 GB and larger volumes.

[Q] 64gb SDXC card, how should it be formatted?

Ok, so I've just bought a Samsung class 10 SDXC UHS-1 card. I'm about to put it in the phone and then I read all about people having problems reading files, and wanting to download something to allow it to be formatted to fat32, etc. Could anyone please throw any light on this, as to how it it best formatted, and to what fat type, and possibly help me to understand why these people are having issues?
Personally I would have said let the phone format it, seeing as it's going to be using it?

1. Put it in the phone.
2. Press "Erase everything on SD-card".
3. ????
4. PROFIT!
No need to worry about formatting, the stock kernel only supports FAT32, and I believe EXT3 & 4, but you don't need to worry about those.
Some people have problems because they buy the cheapest 64GB microSD card available, and you know that cheap card = cheap NAND, which causes corruption of files and random unmounts.

You mean exFAT? That's what the phone formats it as, and the PC does too.

I am using exFAT because I put 4GB+ files there. FAT32 can't support that.

I did not know it had ExFAT, but I just put the card into the phone and pressed "Erase everything on SD card".

Well, I've put shed loads on it and no problems so far, and in my card reader I get up to 16MB/s write, so it's all good. I guess problems are just down to the people who buy cheap knock-offs?

I didn't even do a format on my SanDisk 32gb class10.
I just popped it in and it works.
Think I might format to exfat though so I can store larger files.

I got an S4 yesterday (USD 665 here in Muscat for the unlocked 16GB model) and put in the 64GB card I used before on Note II. It's formatted as exFAT.
On first power on, the phone complained that memory card was damaged and needed reformatting. Bummer! The S4 doesn't support exFAT???
I ignored the error and continued setting up the phone. After a few minutes I checked Settings->Storage and was given the option to mount the memory card. I tried and it mounted without any problems! Phew!

FAT32 is the way to go. Later, if you install a custom ROM exFAT won't be supported.

Not if you have files larger than 4GB, like full HD movies. FAT32 doesn't support files of that size.

Not sure why I would need that as the stock ROM does support exFAT as I said in the above post.

I can confirm that my rooted i9505 (jfltexx from Vodafone Ireland) does support exFAT directly. I have a Samsung 64GB card which came preformatted with exFAT and it worked. I later formatted it directly in the phone and it was exFAT again. No problems whatsoever.
If you want to install a new kernel, however, you might get into trouble. faux123 wrote the following in his thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2273437 for the new faux kernel:
"NOTE: This kernel DOES NOT SUPPORT exFAT formatted 64 GB SDCards! In order to use 64 GB SDCards, you need to format it to NTFS, then use NTFSMount from Play Store to access your 64GB SDCard.
(This is due to LACK OF SOURCE CODE from Samsung/Microsoft for exFAT. Samsung licensed Microsoft's CLOSED SOURCE exFAT implementation. But Samsung under agreement with Microsoft DOES NOT release the source code and therefore we CANNOT build any support for exFAT formatted 64 GB SDCards)"

lagging MicroSD xc 64GB

I have a problem when i play music from my external sd card,
When i hit play , it faltering music what i hear.
I reflash it whit stock rom, same result.
I use Samsung music player and Google play music
Can someone give me advice?

this tablet doesnt support 64 gb sd cards
only 32 gb or lower

That's wrong. Just trying to clarify. I am running a 64g card in my tab 2 10.1" I have it formatted as fat32. It is a Sandisk. I would say to move everything over to your computer and reformat it. Then use the test disk program and make sure it passes. I don't have any lag with songs or data. I use Foldermount with several large data files programs and they run fine.

It's actually half wrong. Because originally our device was released running ICS, which only supports up to 32GB external storage, this is what the spec states. HOWEVER, now it has a Jellybean update it can run 64GB external storage (since Jellybean can support up to 64GB cards).
So to clear this up, if you're still on ICS, you can only have up to 32GB cards. I suggest updating to Jellybean if you want to run 64GB cards. If you are running Jellybean already you need to format the SDXC 64GB card on your PC using the Fat32 format before using on your device.
It's also worth noting that if you are storing files over 4GB or around 4GB on the card it WILL run very, very slow.

You need to format it in the actual device and as said above file size limit of 4gb and fat 32

Wrong again, well half wrong, 64GB do indeed work on ICS just they have to be formatted to fat32, JB adds support for the native format of 64GB cards.
as for the OP's issue, I use Poweramp and when I first got this tablet I had the occasional skip so what I did was go into its setting and increase the Audio Buffer size.

and what about a Samsung Galaxy gio wich runs Android 2.3.6? 64gb works on that phone to

If you actually all read what I wrote properly, I said ICS doesn't SUPPORT 64GB cards. NATIVELY. Yes, they may work. But OFFICIALLY, ICS does not support 64GB cards. Anybody who thinks otherwise needs to do their own research. :silly:

That's wrong as well.
64 Gb cards are normally formatted using the Microsoft proprietary exFAT file system. Microsoft somehow managed to arm-twist media manufacturers into using exFAT, which only some versions of Linux support.
If you format your 64 Gb or larger card using the free, unencumbered FAT32 file system, it'll work just fine with Android.
exFAT does have some real advantages, as the overhead (wasted space used by filesystem bookeeping) is lower. And exFAT allows very large files (more than 4 Gb.)
So,there's nothing special about 64 Gb cards other than the default filesystem. Reformat using FAT32 and you'll be fine.

Formatted my sdcard as fat32, copied 2 songs no problem
There are now 260 songs and have back lag issues.
Also with video.
Also the whole system blocks for a few seconds.
What i also have is a system freeze for a few minutes.
I used another sdcard of 2gb, have same result

Do you have a lot of apps installed on the internal memory?

Set to 2048 or try the others. Might help.

I'm using a 64GB MicroSD card inside my tablet as the internal memory and so far I don't notice any lag,even with only 23GB left on it. Maybe re-format the card?
