My tf101 play videoo 720p mkv not smoothly. Please help me!
It's a very well known and recognized issue. You have a few options:
- Convert to 720p MP4. Handbrake is my personal favorite as it's free and powerful.
- Overclock your CPU
MX Player also has hardware decoding options which help, but not unless you're overclocked.
so can you guide me how to OC my tf101?
You can't with the default Asus kernel, you need to flash one that supports it or flash a custom rom that supports it (most do). Look in the dev section for a rom that's appealing to you then install (if there's isn't one provided already in the rom) one of the numerous overclock apps from the play store.
i have just up rom Revolver 4 and flash the custom kernel. But now the wifi device dont work. I can't turn on the wifi.
Never used Revolver... but did you do a complete wipe of system?
Yes. I wipe ache, davik, and all date before i up the rom. Have i done something wrong? Pleased help. Wifi remains locked in the off position can not turn on!
When flashing a different Dev's ROM, make sure to do the following:
wipe cache
Wipe davlik
Wipe system
and a factory reset in recovery
This will not wipe your /sdcard/ directory, just uninstall all apps and erase system data.
When flashing a newer version of the same ROM the factory reset is not necessary.
I have just reflashed rom Revolver 4 and now it's OK. But it's still lag when playing video .mkv 720p although i overclock my tf101 to 1600.
How much free ram do you have when you start it?
What player do you use?
Do you use hardware decoding for video?
Do you use software decoding for audio?
MX Player with hardware decoding for video and software decoding for audio works fine for me at 1504MHz. Sure every 5 minutes or so there's a small glitch but it's still watchable and barely noticeable. But if you have lots of resource-hogging apps kill them all!
It also depends on the video bitrate of the file. If it is some crazy high setting over 30 FPS at 720p, it may have issues playing the file.
Try using MX Player app, I haven't had any issues playing movies on it. Although some I did need to over clock.

I did lots of test and had this working with 1080p
my hold post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416973
As stated above...not all mkv's play properly, usually due to their being encoded with a high profile, which the nvidia drivers on our TF101 can't handle.
For these select video files I use a batch file on my windows PC and just drag/drop the video in it to get converted.
It still sucks..I wish I could just play all video files without conversion (such as my Touchpad with CM9 can), but I think we'll have to wait until we upgrade to a newer device.
Info on the batch file I use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35412910&postcount=23
Scene releases are mostly ~3000kbps for 720p (much higher for 1080p). I tested a few (all were around that bitrate) and worked fine (while overclocked). Of course if you go higher, as Frederuco said, it'll lag.

I am a new Nook user.
So far I was using a noname chinese tablet (TCC8902-based at 720MHz) and I am used to be able to play any video. The screen quality was pretty bad, but it played absolutely everything i dropped to it.
Now, I upgraded to nook and was planning to enjoy it's excellent screen, but found out that it just doesn't play more than a half of video files that I have. I tried both native Nook FW (videoplayer reports "video is not supported") and CM7 installed on uSD - ES File Managers player (that I mostly used on my old tablet) just doesn't play them without any message.
I would expect Nook's hardware including video accelerator to be more advanced than TCC8902 but looks like there are some restrictions.
Is there anywhere a list of video/audio formats and codecs that are and that are not supported? I was trying to search, but couldn't find one.
Is there any chance that my device has some hardware issues? I think it's unlikely since everything else works fine, but may be?
Try getting MX video player from market.
Get Rock Player Lite
Thanks guys, I will definitely give a try to these players tonight (don't have Nook with me at work).
But as far as I understand all these players are just a front end GUI. Most if not all of the streams parsing, decoding and displaying is done by HW (unless we are talking about software video decoding which I don't consider). Apparently the player i used (built into ES file explorer) is clever enough to pass data to HW since it works fine on inferior tablet.
I am quite sure a question of video support on Nook has been discussed in details, I just couldn't find anything. Could anyone please point me to any good discussions covering this topic?
I'll add a nomination for MoboPlayer. It uses software decoding to play files not supported by hardware.
Also, download Handbrake and search for the suggested Nook settings to convert video files for optimal playback.
Edit: I wanted to add that yes, getting a special video player & converting files is a bit more complex than just dropping the file onto the tablet and playing it. But let's not lose sight of the fact that we're trying to use an eReader to play large, usually HD videos. The fact that it can do it at all is pretty awesome.
With the GSM/UMTS 2.2 Froyo stock ROM I could perfectly watch HD 720p 25Hz and 30Hz H.264 video material, even 1080p footage. The video footage either comes directly from a GoPro HD Hero action cam or from kdenlive (720p, 25Hz H.264 profile, 12000kb/s). As I wrote: no problems on 2.2.
I've upgraded to GB2.3.3 JQ1 as linked in this forum, doing a factory reset and cache wipe on the way. Now I couldn't watch my video footage anymore. The tab stutters and aborts with this video cannot be played (actually, in a different language, so I don't have the exact english words ready).
I've then tried the GB2.3.5 NL version -- again, HD 720p is stuttering, unusable.
Now I've tried the GB2.3.6 JQ8, again, still HD 720p video is unusable. I've reflashed 2.3.3 to try again and then immediately upgrading again to 2.3.6, factory resetting and wiping caches all the times along the way. But to no avail, video playback of HD material does not work.
What did I do wrong? What could I try to get rid of the problem?
Use mxplayer any file will work regardless of android version. Its free as well.

it's simple.. try to download a SD Card booster.. lower the value of your SD Cache to 128kb - 256kb..
and viola.. hope it helps

While I like mxplayer (I've purchased the full version some time ago) it does not help. The problem is that the decoding is too slow, the HW decoder has problems, as well as both SW decoders. Again, the video footage worked well on 2.2 FROYO.

I'm not rooting my Tab at the moment. Also, the cache size is already just 128kb. And then, the problem with playback is both with the internal Flash as well as the external SD card. And finally, my external SD card is sufficiently fast, otherwise my diving camera wouldn't be able to write its H.264 data quick enough. And finally, video playback worked well with 2.2 FROYO, but not with GB ROMs.
Gingerbread has obviously become slow ...
Now did a check with rerendered video footage in H.264 6000kbs: this works. So, the GB 2.3.x stock ROMs are definitely slower when it comes to video rendering compared to 2.2 FROYO ROMs. The FROYO ROMs can handle the 12000kbs video stream, while GB can't.
This is especially sad, as I used to immediately check my diving video footage on my Tab after a dive.
Dunno if it's gonna work..but u could convert ur filesystem to ext4 and also ur memory card( just for the experiment...with linux OS or any windows based utility). Let us know....
Actually, I noticed that 6000kbs footage only works from the internal flash, but not from my external SD card. Considering that that all worked without problems in 2.2, then 2.3.x is a big step back.
Alas, how do I convert the internal filesystem to ext4? I'm running the stock 2.3.6 ROM from the NL at the moment.
install a kernel, like overcome and go into recovery to convert to ext4
Hi, I just got my galaxy tab 10.1 and all 720p video files (trailers, music videos, movies) I put on it lagg really bad. I tried moboplayer, rockplayer and MX player. Has anyone been able to play a 720p file on it without lagg, and how do you do it? Thanks.
I'd do a search if I was you. there is either bsplayer lite or diceplayer on the market. those play them OK. that's your only choices.
Agreed, Diceplayer works without any lag at all. All my 720p mkv episodes run buttery-smooth.
If you only buy *one* app from the market, make sure it's this one (you also have to install the Diceplayer Tegra 2 plug-in).
yeah diceplayer is good. just that there is only the trial version on market with 3 day trial. waiting for the paid one
Diceplayer is still a little bit laggy. Tegra2 suckz big time btw. My singlecore galaxy s handles all kinds of hd-videos without problems.
Bsplayer works best. Almost no lag.

I use VLC Direct Pro, works really great!
and you can stream from your pc, so you don't have to put your movies, series of music on your tablet, just stream it from your pc
I use mxplayer and I haven't got problem, although my tab is far from stock rom

Thank you! Bsplayer was the only player I found that handled 720p with only a little lag. When I overclocked to 1,4ghz with the task 650 rom the lag was like 99% gone on bsplayer. Tegra 2 did not run 720p videos as good as I thought it would, and I guess battery life while watching hd movies must be pretty bad if it needs 1,4ghz OC to run it smoothly.
Edit: It was only able to play trailers smoothly. When I tried a 720p movie it was really choppy. I think I have dowloaded every video player there is and none actually play 720p mkv movies smoothly at all, even with 1.4ghz OC it doeson't work. If I can't get 720p to work, I think I will return this and get the transformer prime instead.
Threads like this come up every couple of weeks. Yes, hardware accelerated codec support on tegra 2 is limited. Those looking to decode just any old file they get elsewhere should look elsewhere for a device that supports the random codec settings that are found on video and movie "distribution sites". Those who do their own encoding can find encoding settings that provide great playback quality on these devices at 720p resolution.

If you copy files on without file extension (this also allows files greater than 2GB to be transferred) and then use androzip or similar to add .mkv to the files Default video player picks up the files and plays them fine

With "pick up," do you mean adding to the library? Because the files actually are in the library in my case, the player just says the files can't be played.

Sorry, yeah they get added to the library. Must just be the encoding used within the mkv frame in your case. Either audio or Video codec not compatible within the mkv for the Tab. In the case of the 2GB file I was using it's AVC and AAC audio.

hello friend, can you please explain simple and step by step?
if i can run .mkv in my stock player then that is the biggest happiness for me.
what should i do please tell me.thanks.
I'd like to add to this that overclocking the device to 1.4GHz did the trick. I can now play my 720p MKV files perfectly fine, using MX Video Player.

Remove the file extension on your computer. This can be achieved by opting to show file extensions, in Windows' folder options. Then, when the files are on your tablet, use a file manager like ASTRO, IO or AndroZip to re-add the extension. That's it. Depending on the video files, this may or may not work.
Here's the answer to you question

The best solution I've found to play 720P locally or stream via SMB is using diceplayer or BSplayer. I use both. Dice Player kinda sucks at skipping timeframe, only great playing 720P video from beginning to end. BSplayer is awesome because I can skip to any and plus it has its own SMB file browser. That alone is not enough though when playing 720P smoothly, you have to overclock it to 1.4Ghz. I'm using Galaxy Task 8.0 ROM and it plays buttery smooth. Use tasker and setcpu to create some custom condition when to overclock. I set condition in tasker to overclock to 1.4Ghz when BSplayer is active and in SetCPU, I set 800mhz when screen is off and set another for 1Ghz when screen is on. Hope that helps. ^^
Don't use Galaxy Task v9 or v10 because I was having WiFi issue, i dont know if its just my tab or not...
1. In Handbrake load your video.
2. Choose the profile for iPad.
3. On the Advanced settings tab unclick "8x8 Transform".
4. This step is optional if you don't really need a 720p video. iPad resolution videos looks exquisite on the Tab anyway.
Resize your video to 1280x720 by clicking on the Picture tab on a Windows machine. Mac users can click the Picture button to change the resolution. Leave all other options intact!
5. Hit convert and wait.
The resulting file will be less than 1GB for a 1h40min video! You can push it with ADB or copy it through MTP without reconversion!
On stock ROM and with Galaxy Task, I've been able to play 720p with no lag using diceplayer with the Tegra2 add-on. No overclocking. I think it's going to depend a lot on how the file was encoded, though. It just happens that I have no problem with the videos I play.
yeah i've been playin with .mkv files on my day old stock rom (but rooted) tab...
my experiences...
transferring 720p mkv via std mtp mount on win7 pc = file copies fine,
1080p mkv wont transfer (it copies for an 1hr, gets to 5 secs to go & fails lol)
stock player can't play mkv for shjt
mx is laggy as hell & hw decoder doesnt work
vplayer does a good enough job with 720p, when using a buffer & hw decoding
i realise there's a lot more to a movie file than its extension... but that's all i realise ;-)
did kinda expect better from the tab tbh... my old cheapa$$ arnova a9 g2 (that i took back to the store & put money too, to get the tab) could play 720p on the stock player.... (exact same files i'm testing on the tab)
i might check out diceplayer that y'all raving about or even BSplayer, my preferred mkv player on my laptop
cheers
Hi,
I'm a new nook owner, but I'm not new to Android (I've had a Galaxy S for some time now). I just received my 'new' nook which came with CM7.10 (CWK74) on it and it's working fine except for hardware acceleration for video playback. I've tried a couple of HW accelerated players (Dice & BS Player), but neither of them seem to be able to play anything back using HW mode, only SW. I've tried a number of different files, both HD & SD, no difference.
Interestingly, Dice seems to at least try to play in HW mode, (the HW indicator shows when you initially try to play a file) but then immediately falls back to SW mode.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what might be going on here?
The videos are most likely not encoded properly for the nook... either the frames are too large or they aren't in h.264

So are you saying that in order for hardware decoding to be available, the videos must be encoded in a certain format? My Samsung Galaxy S plays the same videos in Dice with HW decoding without any issues (I know it's different hardware, but the principal's the same; I have not re-encoded the files for my Samsung and they play fine).
it seems from my experience anyway playing larger files or hd type that arent in h.264 lag some

So is your player in HW decode mode?
atm im using an ICS version and not CM7 so I cant tell you for sure and I dont really remember if it was or not. Head hurting so cant think atm sorry.
I've never had much luck with DSP video acceleration of H.264 on the NC with the various video players. But YouTube and Netflix do work mostly fine and they use DSP playback.
The problem is that the drivers and kernel for the Nook Color are a bit of a homebrew collage and there are problems. The devs do the best that they can with what B&N provides and with what can be scraped together from other devices.
I have had some problems with 720p videos rendering on Gingerbread versions for S5, the same videos where playing just fine in FroYo, with this patch i made some of them working again, in HW mode not SW.
Recorded 720p where working just fine without the patch.
-I watch 720p movies using DicePlayer or Stock player, depending if i want subtitles or not.
Make sure to backup your original libOmxVdec.so, in case something goes wrong.
Tested and working on DSC and CM7(DSC Kernel), but i think it should work on all GB roms out there.
I have atached the patch here, you can flash it using Streakmod.
Hope this helps!
P.S. This is not my work, original work/thread can be found here and original flashable zip can be found here.
re
I installed the ZIP.
I have not noticed any change but....
With this MOD, the browser stopped playing embedded flash videos (youtube,vimeo,indavideo...)
I tried lot of browser, but the result is same.
After I restored the original files, the video playing in the browser works again...
I had no problems with flash player embedded, i also watch movies online on my phone, this patch made some videos 720p working, same videos wouldn't open in HW mode using the original lib.
In froyo i could play almost any 720p i would like, in this, not really, but this patch made some videos playable.
I don't think the browser problem was from the lib, but who knows...all i can say is that this is working just fine for me.
