I have had some problems with 720p videos rendering on Gingerbread versions for S5, the same videos where playing just fine in FroYo, with this patch i made some of them working again, in HW mode not SW.
Recorded 720p where working just fine without the patch.
-I watch 720p movies using DicePlayer or Stock player, depending if i want subtitles or not.
Make sure to backup your original libOmxVdec.so, in case something goes wrong.
Tested and working on DSC and CM7(DSC Kernel), but i think it should work on all GB roms out there.
I have atached the patch here, you can flash it using Streakmod.
Hope this helps!
P.S. This is not my work, original work/thread can be found here and original flashable zip can be found here.
re
I installed the ZIP.
I have not noticed any change but....
With this MOD, the browser stopped playing embedded flash videos (youtube,vimeo,indavideo...)
I tried lot of browser, but the result is same.
After I restored the original files, the video playing in the browser works again...
I had no problems with flash player embedded, i also watch movies online on my phone, this patch made some videos 720p working, same videos wouldn't open in HW mode using the original lib.
In froyo i could play almost any 720p i would like, in this, not really, but this patch made some videos playable.
I don't think the browser problem was from the lib, but who knows...all i can say is that this is working just fine for me.

Hi. I'm currently running MIUI 2.1.20 (see link below)
http://forums.miui.us/showthread.php?13388-MIUI-us-Kindle-Fire-rom-Updated-2-1-20-0xD34D
One problem for me is that I can play streaming videos from the Net and user-uploaded videos in Facebook, but when they play, the video is all choppy, like how a TV is out of tune with like diagonal lines running through it, so it's pretty much un-viewable. The audio plays fine, and the video plays, just can't really make it out at all. So, this happens when I try to watch videos from web-sites that aren't in YouTube & Netflix (those work fine).
Was wondering if there has been any development regarding a fix for this issue in this build of MIUI?
If not, does anyone know if the 2.2.3 ICS build of MIUI addresses this issue? (see link below) It's not listed as a known issue, but I don't want to assume it's fixed before flashing to it.

I use MX video player for all my videos. You can set it to SW decode and its pretty good about playing all videos without lag.

Right now, the lack of hardware acceleration in the multiple ports of ICS for the Fire prevents HD video playback, and often leaves SD video pretty laggy or choppy. Also, with no native support for Adobe Flash when streaming video, that can degrade the quality as well, if not playing whatsoever. The devs are working to get this resolved, but as it's a really complicated process, it still may be awhile before it's resolved.
Put the newest build i could find for this guy. Bought him off ebay for a cool 135 free shipping and has turned out to be amazing. Using him with my old Tzones plan running NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.4-CM9-HWA.
Everything runs great except videos. If I am streaming an MP4 its like an 80% chance the file will just be green and blurred like scrambled cable. Sometimes it will play just fine. Even crappy 240p files will be green in both the regular android player and MX Player.
Now I'm trying to see which type of 720p files the phone can play. After a couple of handbrake encodes it will play the 720p in MX Player but it will be frame ratey. The stock player wont even touch the file.
I check the decoding options in MX Video and only software decoding is enabled. Is there an ICS build capable of playing videos with Hardware Decoding.
Your thoughts guys !
Edit --
Tried with Mobo Player and still the same error.

Install MX Player and install the Armv7 addon for MX Player (it will be in the related apps or something in the play store) and use software decoding. I have also found 720p playback to be atrociously laggy, but I tried Inception at 480p and it plays great.
Installed and it definitely seems to be working with the green videos but 720p seems like a no go...
Is it the rom or is it the phone ?

Hmm, 720p playback is usually listed as a working thing but I don't see how NexusHD2 is in any way inferior to the other ROMs, it definitely has a comparable performance.
Is this normal even in the latest nightly? I thought that full HWA would get this fixed, but YouTube lags if I'm scrolling trough comments and MX Player can't play videos at decent speed (tried with a 720p video that worked fine on CM7). Is it normal that I can't choose hw deco on MX Player?
Maybe it's something with the codecs?
Everything else seems smooth, though opening apps is a little slow.
Thanks in advance
Edit: btw it's a Defy red lens, CM9 for froyo kernel (07/05/2012)

Stock Player
Have you tried the stock player?
I have the same build as you have and the stock player is working great. I have downloaded some YouTube .mp4 videos (from PC) and they play like charm on the stock Gallery player.
Haven't tried other players, though.
I was having some serious lagging here and there, having moved through the last 10 or so Epsylon3 nightlies making setting change after change, and doing a lot of tweaking. I'm sure that something had left a footprint somewhere, and ICS wasn't liking it.
I'll tell you what made a big difference for me: Backing up, and doing a factory reset. I've reloaded my apps, and set everything how I like it, and whatever it was that was causing lag cleared right up. It's performing the best it's been thus far.
Well, sometimes just wiping the dalvik and the cache is enough, but a clean install always solves all the problems.
Take good care of your Defy!
with hwa the videos doesn't show image, buy when I change to S/W (in mx player) the video works fine
For some reason, I can no longer play videos on my Galaxy 10.1 tab. What the heck is going on? They played beautifully before ICS, now they play with sound only.
I was using Dice Player with the plug-in, and they worked fine before. But now they won't work. So I deleted them, and downloaded them again, but they still won't work. So I uninstalled them again, and installed the Mobo player. Same thing -- audio, but no picture.
Is anybody else having this problem? I can't believe it's only my tab. Anybody have a solution? Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem after the update to ICS 4.0.4 the problems started.... this is because developers NO LONGER support the ADOBE Flash Player..!!!
Seems both have had issues, so Adobe stopped Supporting and updating and Google or Samsung or both have disabled its functions in the Update ICS 4.0.4...!!
Solution is to find a working / supporting Video Downloader which gives you the choice to View and Downliad Videos..!!
I am now using "Firefox with Video Downloader and the MXPlayer" works well..!!!!!
Just have to test and choose whichever combination works for you.!
Hope this answers your Q's

I guess I should clarify my original post. I have absolutely no problem playing web-based videos. I have no problems with Youtube, and videos play when I visit websites with flash video. My web-based videos play fine whether I'm using Firefox or the stock Android browser.
On the other hand, I am having problems with my personal video files (MP4, MKV, etc.) that I import into my tab. Prior to the ICS update, the videos played fine using Dice player. And even for a couple of weeks after the ICS update, the videos played, although choppy. After consulting with a Samsung tech person, he advised me to do a hard reset of my tab. That seemed to fix things.
But now, my videos play with audio only, no video. I have installed and reinstalled Dice Player, and Mobo Player, but neither work. This is really bumming me out because watching videos is one of my primary uses for the Galaxy Tab.

OK, I've tried everything, and just now (reluctantly) did a hard reset of my tab. No change; I still can't play most of my video files. All I get is sound, no video.
Does anybody have any idea why my video capability suddenly stopped working? I have checked every setting I could find; I have installed and reinstalled video players; and have even tried recoding some of my videos. They are coded at mp4 with H.264. A week ago, they played flawlessly in my Dice player.
Anybody have any suggestions?
My tf101 play videoo 720p mkv not smoothly. Please help me!
It's a very well known and recognized issue. You have a few options:
- Convert to 720p MP4. Handbrake is my personal favorite as it's free and powerful.
- Overclock your CPU
MX Player also has hardware decoding options which help, but not unless you're overclocked.
so can you guide me how to OC my tf101?
You can't with the default Asus kernel, you need to flash one that supports it or flash a custom rom that supports it (most do). Look in the dev section for a rom that's appealing to you then install (if there's isn't one provided already in the rom) one of the numerous overclock apps from the play store.
i have just up rom Revolver 4 and flash the custom kernel. But now the wifi device dont work. I can't turn on the wifi.
Never used Revolver... but did you do a complete wipe of system?
Yes. I wipe ache, davik, and all date before i up the rom. Have i done something wrong? Pleased help. Wifi remains locked in the off position can not turn on!
When flashing a different Dev's ROM, make sure to do the following:
wipe cache
Wipe davlik
Wipe system
and a factory reset in recovery
This will not wipe your /sdcard/ directory, just uninstall all apps and erase system data.
When flashing a newer version of the same ROM the factory reset is not necessary.
I have just reflashed rom Revolver 4 and now it's OK. But it's still lag when playing video .mkv 720p although i overclock my tf101 to 1600.
How much free ram do you have when you start it?
What player do you use?
Do you use hardware decoding for video?
Do you use software decoding for audio?
MX Player with hardware decoding for video and software decoding for audio works fine for me at 1504MHz. Sure every 5 minutes or so there's a small glitch but it's still watchable and barely noticeable. But if you have lots of resource-hogging apps kill them all!
It also depends on the video bitrate of the file. If it is some crazy high setting over 30 FPS at 720p, it may have issues playing the file.
Try using MX Player app, I haven't had any issues playing movies on it. Although some I did need to over clock.

I did lots of test and had this working with 1080p
my hold post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416973
As stated above...not all mkv's play properly, usually due to their being encoded with a high profile, which the nvidia drivers on our TF101 can't handle.
For these select video files I use a batch file on my windows PC and just drag/drop the video in it to get converted.
It still sucks..I wish I could just play all video files without conversion (such as my Touchpad with CM9 can), but I think we'll have to wait until we upgrade to a newer device.
Info on the batch file I use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35412910&postcount=23
Scene releases are mostly ~3000kbps for 720p (much higher for 1080p). I tested a few (all were around that bitrate) and worked fine (while overclocked). Of course if you go higher, as Frederuco said, it'll lag.
