I need to delete unwanted APPS! please help!

I have HD2 for Tmo and im trying to delete b&n reader and mobitv, along with some other apps but i cant find them in the 'remove application' portion of settings...help please? Thanks in advance!!!

I'm sorry to tell you this but you will not be able to remove any of those apps because they are baked as part of the ROM unless you flashed another ROM that the chef's cooked here that is the only way to remove them or if you know how to cook a ROM yourself.

This is what I did to remove the apps:
- Start up the application.
- Hopefully you are running and out-of-date version of the app. When they start up they will check for updated software.
- It will prompt you to download and install the updated software. Install the update.
- After installation is complete, close the app.
- Check the Remove Programs panel, it should now display the app(s) you just installed, allowing you to remove them.
Its a bit of work, but this method allowed me to get rid of most of the useless apps on the HD2.

I think you just have to delete the folder for the app to make it disappear. Haven't tried it myself but if you're never going to use it anyway, what's the harm?

Thanks to all...I will will try to run the program and check for updates...i updated my ROM to 2.13 hasnt made a difference tho...I will keep trying!

Did you just delete the links from the "start menu" folder, or did you try removing the program files themselves?

That is the first thing I did when I got my phone... and the first thing I will do after installing the new rom. Plug it into your computer, explore it as you would any other external drive, and delete the entire folders.... there goes the apps you do not want....

It doesn't work with Opera.

I have deleted the B&N eReader, BlockBuster and MobiTV by just deleting the directories they were in. Also went into the Start Menu folder in the Windows folder and deleted their icons there so they don't show up in the Start Menu.
I have been unable to delete the Facebook application because the files are in the Windows directory and are read only.

But this doesn't guarantee you removed unwanted registry entries that can bog down your system.

You can do what Paten suggested and then take the final step of running memmaid, it has the ability to clean out reg entries orphaned by removed programs.

[Guide]List of apps safe to remove

This is a list of safe/unsafe apps to remove from stock roms.
Generally for other regions/carrier roms anything not included should be safe to remove.
Safe in this case is defined as "will not affect the stability of the rom" removing carrier apps is "safe" for the rom, but weither or not it's useful to keep is beyond the scope of this guide. It's time consuming to go through and delete the unwanted stuff using Root Uninstaller, but I believe it to be time well spent if only to provide a bit more space on the internal MicroSD. Perhaps someone should write an automated script that will allow the user to delete the APKs in the "Safe To Remove" section of the post?
Removing things like Stage UI and the bundleware should be left out of such a script, since every user is different.

The bundleware is more or less safe to remove, just as much they're usually older versions of what's available on market, you'd still need to update and would end up with 2 copies on your system. The current version at /data/app and the original older version at /system/app
Root explorer has a mass select button btw if you use that, I believe it also works for deleting but I'm not 100% sure. Only thing to be careful of is uninstalling a system critical file, though you can just as easily manually uninstall one by accident.
There's actually more stuff that can safely be removed, only the rom is the only way to get it as you cant download it normally. (eg swype and drmplayer, though swype beta is available as a slightly different thing)

I wasn't questioning the safety of removing the bundleware, since I removed most of it along with all the engineering stuff and the Stage UI yesterday. All I was saying is that in a script those things shouldn't be included because of individual user preferences.

Added a couple more apps into list, turns out everything in com.oem.* is not required (if you ignore being able to use OTA updates, but as noone uses them to begin with)
Dont remove dellsettingsprovider.apk though, it's needed for dock mode with an official dock.

out of curiosity did you guys figure out what are all those com.engineeringmode.* apps? to be honest, removing something like gsensor.apk sounds scary

If you force them to run by making a custom activity shortcut, they mostly do exactly what they sound like.
Majority of them lets you test a single function (ie what they're named after). They're all essentinally debug utils. Dell might have them included because it makes fixing returned devices easier (ie warrentied devices)
Or just as likely they left them in because they're lazy, the entire build system for the s5 is a bit of a mess. They fixed it for building venue and streak 7 roms but they never bothered to go back and fix it.
Though all these apps are also included in stock venue and s7 roms

So before removing these apps do a nandroid backup. Will the nandroid save these files? Also can u do this with Gingerstreak?

Of course nandroid saves it, unless you intentionally dont do a nandroid of system\, which defeats the point of nandroid.

so I decided to remove completely all those apps; so far so good and I'll surely like the slightly higher amount of available RAM
I have found something odd though (albeit almost irrelevant). after uninstalling (via titanium backup) all these apps I have lost one of the two wallpapers galllery (the one with a lot of pictures). Unfortunately I cannot tell which is the app responsible for this as I uninstalled them in bulk (I am not even 100% sure the two facts are related as more tweaking was going on and I discovered the issue only hours later).
well as I stated before it's not what you call a deal breaker, who uses stock wallpapers anyway but you'd better be advised than sorry!

you likely removed something in com.android.*
wallpapers are set with either:
gallery app
stageui's set
default android live wallpapers
whatever others you downloaded

Updated list, there are a couple com.oem apps that are boarderline cases of being safe to remove, as they break functionality, but which depends on if that's a good or bad thing.
Case in point: the ota tools can be safely removed, but obviously break ota updates. If you're on a custom rom this wouldnt work anyway as custom roms dont support ota updates.

Experience uninstalling these apps, based on 2.2.2 351 00:
Deleted the package apps = could not uninstall using Settings - App. Tried restarting phone as possible solution but got stuck on boot image.
Does cabledetection have anything to do with attaching with usb to pc? Gone, cannot use Streak as USB storage device in pc.
Note that many other appd can be removed too. Check Cyanogen barebones for detailed descriptions.
Question: Why is it impossible to "restore" apps I remove? Titanium simply does not work. At least with such far out ventures as removing, by accident though, and I had made a backup of everything, so it shoulf have been possible, the Accounts and Sync Settings apk.
Analogously - copying and pasting in RootExplorer does nothing at all, as is the case with trying to reinstall removed apps.
Anyways, lots of stuff can be removed. I even removed Market, to save resources, since I never download any apps from there anway.

You would be better off doing a nandroid backup before you muck around with the files. That way if something DOES happen you can go back to the original configuration. As to Titanium Backup, various versions of the app have had problems with restoring apps, corrupting not only the app, but the app's data as well. For backup purposes, Titanium Backup is not recommended. Nandroid instead.

I have had this issue for a very long time and could not find a lasting and solid solution. After researching the problem for a few weeks I found a solution that worked for me, finally.
The issue seems to have triggered when I used the Titanium Backup Pro Market tools to unlink and link apps to my market account and system apps were added by accident. This should work with any app that can link and unlink apps to and from the Market.
Here is the step-by-step solution for TB Pro:
1) Go to Market Tools -> Market Doctor and Unlink all User & System apps.
2) Reboot device.
3) Open any Root Explorer or Browser and locate and delete the file "market_assets.db" in "/data/data/com.android.vending/databases".
4) Reboot device.
5) Go to TB Pro and to Market Tools -> Market Doctor -> User Apps and link all the User Apps that you installed on your device from the Android Market. Make sure that no System App is linked.
6) Reboot device.
Then the apps you have linked to your account will appear again in Your Apps of the Market after a few minutes. If they do not then install a new free app or a free app that you had previously installed and uninstalled and your apps should appear soon.
In my case I had used all proposed solutions with no luck and this was the only solid solution. I used TB Pro and Root Browser Lite to do this. You could probably use MyBackup for free (30 days trial) to do the same process but if you had this issues chances are that you already have an app that can unlink and link apps from the market.

Edit 6 FEB 2012: This solution is temporary unfortunately. The cause of the problem is linking apps to the market that were not downloaded from the market or linking to the market from a backup that is quite old/corrupted. To sort this out there is an app now and you can find it from here:

It is called Market Fixer and it detects market links that are problematic and removes them to restore the My Apps functionality in the Market.

Cool thanks, I had already found that solution by myself and it works fine, but doesn't survive a hard reset, meaning everytime I flash a new rom with full wipe the problem comes back and I have to go through this again...
I tried to use another account with a full wipe and no problem, so my account must be screwed for life.

With 2 accounts setup at the same time, I can mysteriously buy apps !!!
If I delete the second account, bam, I can't buy anymore.
Looks like the simple presence of a "clean" account sorts things out for the corrupted one...

This hasn't occurred to me at any point. I can always purchase apps from the Market.

This is strange. Are you looking in the internal SD card? What rom are you running and which version of the Market you have installed?

I am using Root Explorer. From "/" i navigate to "/data/data/com.android.vending/".
At that folder is see these sub-folders:

cache

But there is no databases sub-folder.
I am using DarkyROM 10.4.2 and Market version is 3.4.4.

If it is ES Explorer you can't search file in root system with it.
Choose "Root Browser Lite"

You are missing the folders databases and shared_prefs then. What happens if you try to create an empty folder there called databases?
Alternatively you can search for the file "market_assets.db" to see where it is saved at. Root browser lite has both search and create new folder functions.

I use Root Explorer.
I created the "databases" folder under /data/data/com.android.vending/ and rebooted. Nothing happened. No files appeared inside databases. Then I "Force stop" and "Clear data" of Market app and reboot. After that databases folder disappears again.

This can only be explained by the fact that you are using a custom rom which is probably based on a previous stock rom than the one we have or it has been modified to affect that part of the market.
I also had an Android Market account corruption where apps I never purchased or never downloaded appeared in my apps when I logged into my account on the PC. Some of those apps would appear under my Apps in the Market for a long time. What I did was flash the latest rom XLA4 with Mobile Odin Pro (to not lose root), flash the CF root kernel to restore CWM functionality, wipe internal sd card/apps/data/factory reset/dalvik cache, install all the apps I wanted through the Android Market account on my PC and then follow the procedure I mention in my first post here. Now (today in fact) I checked my Android Market account online and all the "fake" apps are gone, the duplicates are gone and everything is in place. Also the Market on my phone is working great with no issues and all the apps I linked are there.

It seems to me that before this kind of application was not in the list of installed applications on the market or unable to uninstall.

System applications should not appear in your apps unless you updated an app like Youtube or Maps at some point, so that it will give you the option to uninstall it. You probably added them with TB Pro when you linked the apps to the market as part of the solution. I haven't added them in my case and added only the apps I have installed/bought from the market myself. Therefore, they are not in the Not Installed section.
Some apps indeed do not have the option to be uninstalled (even apps I have bought myself) but it is rare and you can still uninstall them using TB Pro.

Tried this just now on a Galaxy Nexus with ICS 4.0.2 stock rom. (Should this work on this phone too?)
Only thing I did different is I left a couple system apps (like maps etc..) checked during the restore market links in Titanium Backup...
Could this be the problem? Also after deleting the database file and rebooting, I spent about 10+ mins deselecting system and amazon apps from the restore market links, before actually running it. Did it repopulate the database before ran the fix links option and screw things up?
I tried also clearing market data to see if that would help but i did this after this fix did not work. It didn't help either.

I do not know if this fix will work with ICS. You can try it again only adding apps you actually purchased or installed free through the Market to see if that was the issue.

Thanks. I did try it again like you mention and still no luck. I did however do a complete wipe and reinstalled the stock rom. Initially the market was working, until I restored user apps with data with titanium backup, then immediately I was back to the same problem.
So like you said initially, its definitely related to Titanium Backup.

I followed your instructions carefully on my fully rooted OEM Rom Atrix 2, but it did not work for me the first time. However, I performed them again, only this time, for each and every one of the reboots (I rebooted using Quick Boot ver.4.1), on the way back up I booted back up into recovery, and wiped the cache. I am not sure how that could have made a difference, but it appears to have been necessary in my case. I have not installed a custom ROM yet (was waiting for bootloader unlocking, but it's not hopeful, so I'll be using some other method).

Well, it worked for a few days. Somehow, it broke again on it's own. I had not messed with any market links or anything. Didn't flash anything, and didn't even muddle with any system files. Just flat out, unprovoked, snafu for no apparent reason.

This is very frustrating because I am having this happen more and more on different roms and even before installing titanium backup. The fix discussed here did not fix mine either. Sucks because it is only on some roms and not others.

[Q] "Crap" Everywhere - From Uninstalled Apps

In trying to free up some space on my KF today, I noticed that apps that I had uninstalled, both before and after I rooted my KF, still left the entire app on my KF.
What's up with this?
For example, one of the first things I installed, kinda jokingly, was the Nook app. This was days after I got my KF and I had also downloaded a few free books for it. I uninstalled that app 6 months ago, yet all the Nook files were still there, including the .apk. I was able to delete them all and not cause any noticeable problem with my KF, but I have d/l'd a lot of apps and deleted them since I got my KF on the first day it was released. So if it had an easy name to remember, not too big of an issue, but app names in the directory aren't always straightforward to what they are... they may be listed by their developer's name or such.
I'm not opposed to completely wiping it and re-installing everything, but there are a number of games that I would lose my progress in if I did that. Plus, I am not in desperate need of space... yet. Granted, the TWRP backup doesn't help much when it comes to space, but it is a nice thing to have.
[BTW, my KF has been rooted for several months now, and was just updated with the latest KFU v9.6, running GoLauncher. It's a pretty straight forward rooted device that I haven't tweaked much because I really do read a lot on it.]
So I was wondering if there was an app that works better than the free version of SD Maid to clean up all this left over garbage? Even SD Maid didn't detect the Nook app still being there (the free version doesn't do all the paid version does, but, for the most part, it still shows ya what it found). Or if someone has a detailed guide of walking you through how to clean up useless files... that would be cool too.
Like I said, there is definitely a lot of crap taking up space that can be deleted. But I don't know Android (I'm really a Windows/Cisco guy), so I don't know to what extent I can delete stuff without causing problems.
Any help would be appreciated.
BTW, could the Image Verification images be any harder? LOL

I believe this is an issue in older Android versions. I noticed my phone doing the same thing while it was in Eclair, then in Froyo and then in GingerBread.
It looks to me like ICS will automatically remove any orphan data it finds - I've tried deleting just an application's apk and, after rebooting the system, its data was gone as well (tried on both my phone and KF).

I guess you can try "pm list packages -f" to get the names of the apks and their matching data folders.

You can most likely extract their data. Alternatively, you may want to look into Titanium Backup for backing up both apps and their data.

You could also move the TWRP backup to the computer...

I would just backup any apps/games on TB while also saving the contents of your SD on your computer. Then simply use TWRP to wide SD card. You can then move your TWRP backups to the SD card from your computer and restore app and data on TB.

delete bloatware without root and without additional app

I just discovered a small trick on how to delete bloatware which came with the phone. Or I hope I discovered it. I have a G935F from a german carrier called o2. It has no root-rights and is stock. It came with various apps such as "hrs hotels", some o2 apps, an app to install a game called "Empire: Four Kingdoms" and so on...
I believe it was only possible to deactivate and not to deinstall these apps when I tried to deinstall them.
Fortunately I was able to deinstall with "My Files" from Samsung which is already installed on your phone. At the very bottom is written "Storage Usage". There you will find the window "User data". Click on "Detail" and now on "Apps". There you go....
Maybe you guys can check if I am right and you can deinstall this way apps you wasn't able to deinstall before. Unfortunately I already deinstalled all my bloatware and now I don't know if they really are only possible to deinstall this way.

Sometimes carrier bloat is installed in the data partition where they can be uninstalled. I think you'll find that Samsung apps and services cannot be uninstalled this way. That's because they reside in the system partition.

AT&T US version does not have access to details under Storage Usage. Thanks for the tip.

The US T-Mobile version does have it, but unfortunately it only shows the apps that I have installed, not any of the carrier bloatware.
