First: This thread should be on Q&A. 2nd: Read defy begginers guide, since you're noob. 3rd: CM10 thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768702

As turffe already wrote, you need to read through the FAQ first in order to understand everything.
Then I'd recommend you checking out the developers forum which has many Custom Roms. I would look through the custom roms, read through the comments and then decide on a CR. But before flashing your phone, you need to be familiar with the process!

[Q] ROMs - Selection and Other Questions

Hi Guys,
I've got a stock A500 and due to the conflicting reports as to whether Acer will provide an OTA update to Jellybean, I've decided to flash a custom ROM as there as some minor quirks that are starting to bug me.
Anyway, I've found the thread to explain what to do - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205204 - but it's left me with a couple of questions.
Selection of ROM
I can see at http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1136 there are links to various threads relating to custom ROMs such as CM10 Jellybean, AOKP Jellybean and CM10 Jellytime etc.
1) These have other topics scattered throughout so I was wondering if there's a page that summarises the various JB ROMs out there with a link to their topic page?
2) Without knowing each of the developers, how does one choose which ROM to use? Is there such a thing as a "vanilla/Plain-Jane" JB ROM?
3) Each of these topics have the first post outlining the ROM with a link to the zip file. Does the author update this link in the 1st post if there's update to the ROM or do you need to read through all the posts to see if the author has an updated link?
4) Once you've installed a custom ROM, how do you know if there's updates? Does the Update in Settings work or do you need to manually come back to the topic and see if the zip file is updated?
ROM/Kernel
At http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205204 it says that you need
external SD card, root rights, unlocked bootloader (if you're on stock ICS), custom recovery and a custom ROM of your choice.

Yet further down it talks about Custom ROMs and Custom Kernels.
1) What are the differences?
2) What does a Kernel do?
3) Do I need this or just the ROM?
Thanks
PS - Not sure if this topic is better suited to be in http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1136, but since it's a question, the rules say that it should go in the Q&A section.

i9100G - Root + CM10 install help. Firmware confusion!!

Hello People,
Let me begin by stating that I am very very new to Android rooting and custom roms (actually, this is my first time ).
I have a SGS2 i9100G. I have attached the screenshot of my phone software details. I have searched on the internet and XDA but am unable to find or maybe understand how to root my device and install CyanogenMod 10 (JB 4.1). Whenever I reach a post which seems like the way to root my device, it talks about firmwares and modems which are different than what my phone has.
I would be very very greatful if someone can sort this for me and provide some links and steps on how can I successfully root my phone and install CM10 (JB 4.1). Thanks a lot already as I know people will start replying in no time
Cheers
Sorry. I think I posted this question in the wrong forum. Please delete it. I am posting it in Q&A.
Sorry, Again.

Not able to downgrade from Quarx CM10 build to CM72

I ma running Quarx's latest cm10 build with 2nd boot, I want to downgrade to gingerbread but when I flash any gingerbread rom the phone gets stuck to motorola logo.
I was able to install Gingerbread over older Quarx's cm10 build before 2nd boot.
Please suggest some solution.
Thanks
Redundant
Dude there is an existing thread for this, started by me this week.
Please refer to it. Use the search function and make efforts to look beyond the results on the first page in the forum. :silly:
Help keep the number of threads to a minimum, it is for your own convinience.
Here is the thread :highfive:
Don't forget to hit the Thanks button.
And if you are stuck at the red moto logo, I would recomend a full SBF flash and starting again to ensure the cleanest install possible.
Good luck.
Press thanks if this helped.

Defy+ best stable CWM and CMs
Hi,
First post so it ends up here. I have been following the Defy user guide and have found that a lot of links are broken and when trying to locate files there is a lot of misleading info on this process.
I'm new to rooting Androids but I'm capable of following procedures as long as they don't involve too many acronyms or poorly explained sections.
I have a rooted phone via framaroot and 2ndinit installed.
I don't quite get what to do next with Clockwork Mod or TWRP? Also, there are references to recovery installations but the links seem to head to an error page. I'm in Australia if that makes any difference to the recovery file. My MB526 is currently at 2.3.6.
*** edit OK so I learned that the 2ndinit has CWM5.0? in it and I followed a guide to install Cyanogen 10.2 and Gapps which wouldn't install via the CWM recovery. So I go around again and am looking for CM10 which is referred to in another guide (then step up to 10.2) Surely there is a better way to complete this? From here there is another step to CM11... I'll get back to it in the morning...
Once I install the CWM(x) I then install a custom ROM? CM(x) which one is recommended as stable? I'm not looking to rewrite history with this thing, I'm just looking to share the SD card with the OS and strip out all of the bloatware so that my kid can call me on this thing with skype and sync a gmail calendar account. Pretty simple, but don't want it getting bogged down.
I thank you guys in advance for your helpful responses and look forward to getting this old beast humming again!

****edit I managed to get the latest nightly cm11 into my device after reading many threads with instructions buried down in the comments. Unfortunately my phone runs slowly, way slower than stock. Is this normal for the builds due to the increased resource requirements from kk? Is it a stability issue, if so what is the latest stable build? Is anyone active through this place anymore or is it a parking zone for old phones?
Hello. I need your help. I can not get by any aside Stock Rom . More specifically, the Rom Retail Latinoamerica Moto Defy MB525.
Anyone is able to upload to download ?
Anyone have the Brazilian/Latin America Retail of Jordan Plus??
please upload working link
can anyone please upload working UK original rom link for motorola defy plus red lens 4.5.1-134_DFP-231 BL7..
thanks in advance...
SBF download links broken
Unfortunately I have bricked my beloved Moto Defy Plus.. Yup I still use it.. Can somebody please help me locate this file which im sure will solve my problem..
Blur_Version.45.0.2310.MB526.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU Retail Central Europe
Regards.
Bricked defy, white LED
I'm in a sticky situation with my moto defy, tried to install cyanogenmod (done this several times) but as i was installing the rom, the phone restarted and started directly on bootloader. I tried to get it to come back to recovery (no use), and went back to trying to install an SBF file, here's where i screwed up badly, almost all sbf files for the defy are in shutdowned servers, so i couldn't download my original carrier file (personal argentina), and tried one that i found on another page, and after installing that file, i got a black screen with the LED turning white when i plug it into de pc, and it being recognized by RSD lite. after that i tried several files, all giving the same result, or showing the bootloader screen with a 4 byte error written in 2hex,2hex,2hex,2hex form.
4.5.1-134-DFP-132 - retail-en-de full Blur
Any chance to get 4.5.1-134-DFP-132 - retail-en-de full Blur ? The link to the thread doesen't work, I found some mirrors to many defy+ stock roms, but apparently I can't find this one.
This is the rom that officially comes with my phone.. so I will like to have it stored on my hard drive in case i make some mistakes while flashing - playing with roms..
Also.. right now I'm using nightly cyanogen 7.2 jordan plus rom, and it works very well.. But I would also like to try a stock rom without blur motorola services and without google apps.. any suggestion will be appreciated
Thanks
