My backlight keeps adjusting itself. Even with auto brightness off.
I don't really want to call it flicker, because it doesn't seem like flickering. It's more like pulsing slightly brighter and then slightly dimmer. It's most noticeable on light colored backgrounds, like the browser or the play store. As I said, I have auto brightness turned off, so I would think that there'd be absolutely no change in brightness when bringing up a bright window.
Any ideas on what can be done to fix this? I am rooted, but I have not installed any custom roms. I'm running stock 4.2.1.
Thanks

Any fix? If necessary, I'm willing to load a custom ROM and/or Kernel. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

If you're rooted there is a solution here....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815414
The essence of which is as follows...
Run this command using terminal emulator (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&hl=en)...
To Disable SmartDimmer ...(to prevent 'flicker').
Code:
su
echo "0" > /sys/devices/tegradc.0/smartdimmer/enable
You can set this up as a script to be executed at boot using ScriptManager (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=os.tools.scriptmanager).
Set it as ROOT and BOOT... you won't need the 'su' command in the script, as ScriptManager will already be granted su permissions.
This has totally eradicated the screen brightness fluctuations (not as pithy as 'flicker' but I think a more accurate description) for me .
Rgrds,
Ged.
Thanks so much! I did this and the flickering went away. I even undid it to make sure. When I shut it off, the flickering returned. Turn it on, flickering gone. I even checked at different brightness, and no flickering. Originally I thought this was just another defective unit. After spending a bit of time looking around the web, turns out it is a common problem. I am glad that there's a simple solution, at least for us rooted folks.
And I agree that flicker isn't exactly right. To me, flicker is more random. This is more of a rhythmic pulsing of the backlight, between brighter and dimmer. And I can readily reproduce it by shutting down chrome and going back in.

Hey guys I'm having some concerns about my xperia play and so i want to know if i should be worried...
My screen flickers. ( Not on/off) but between shades. It's hard to explain but it drops between levels of brightness, but here's the deal i turn auto brightness off and it still flickers. Now i have noticed that the screen will dim ( flicker shades) with the orientation of the phone. Idk.
Also when I'm downloading the games thru xperia app it takes forever, i have high speed internet and I'm connected via WiFi but should i be expecting A 150MB download to take up to 45 minutes. Seems kinda slow to me.
Thanks in advance guys.
By Tue screen flickering if u mean the auto brightness increasing and decreasing immensely at times its normal since u cant turn off the auto brightness in our phone....
About the games..most of the games took 15-20 mins or less for me on an 8 mpbs connection

Is there some kind of other brightness settings, i turned auto brightness off. And I'm still getting fluctuations in the shade of color.
if you have root you can disable this, but it is only temporary as somewhere in the system it re-enables this.
create a gscript with su ability
start script below
echo "0" > /sys/devices/i2c-0/0-0040/leds/lcd-backlight/als/enable
end script above
do not include the start and end parts
lasts around an hour, stops the flicker in bad light situations

It wont turn off even if you untick it, its an anoying bug, hopefully custom roms/kernels will solve this, dont worry about the downloads, even with high speed internet, keep in mind most of the developers are small companies and cant afford expensive hosting, even the gameloft servers are slow imo

You can NOT turn auto brightness off on the Play, it is hard wired right into the os, even if you used an app or widget saying it if off it is NOT! there is nothing you can do until SE fix it or some members here mod the os,
All the Play's do exactly what your describing, lots of topic here and elsewhere about it, everybody moans about it!
And regarding downloads, things from the market download fast for me, very fast, but other stuff from other places can be very slow, gameloft for example, takes hours! just depends on the servers your downloading from.
Hey thanks guys for the information. When i get to a desktop I'll hit the thanks button for all of you. I think my WiFi was acting up last night, i was playing some zombies and downloading torrents at the same time.lol. anyways thanks guys again.

Actually you can disable it, its just not permanent please see my previous post
To be honest with you I like the auto brightness. I think is super responsive which other phones it seems like it takes forever to kick in which is why I normally shut it off

I think it works great too, but it is nice to have this little gscript ready for times when the autobrightness goes wacky and the screen flickers
Out of nowhere, my phone's screen has tarted to flicker. The brightness flickers and is very distracting. I've already tried to flash the latest OxygenOS available, but it hasn't worked.
Thing is, it flickers in both OOS and TWRP but it doesn't when booting up and in the bootloader.
Is it a hardware issue or there's a software fix?

Nope, in the end I had to RMA the phone.
I had to go through the hops from support, but they were certain it was a hardware fault, I had it fixed at no cost.
There can be two things, one's Adaptive Brightness which usually does that, check if you have it enabled, disable it.
Second thing can be CABC (Content Adaptive Backlight Control) which works as opt's lcd throttler. It throttles, i.e. puts the brightness to a bare minimum when the temperature of the screen exceeds a particular value.
Now disabling this isn't very productive and/or practical. But if you want it disabled you can flash cm13 (a custom rom). On cm13 I've realised it works only on temperatures more than 65-70*.
I suggest you to keep your opt cool as long as you can.
Mine started flickering just after I made a change in Settings, and it was Turning OFF Adaptive Brightness
Mine just started flickering after I didn't change anything at all. Never used adaptive brightness in my life.
Hi all,
I know this is an old question, but all my googling thru online forums led to nothing conclusive yet, other than non-working suggestions or using apps. But having to live with this dimming thing is bothering and exhausting !!! Simply said, there aren't any useful settings. Max display timeout in my phone is 10 minutes but, no matter which value I pick, after some seconds my display gets dimmed. And the developer option "stay awake" serves no purposes aswell... it just prevents the screen from going to sleep completely when under charge, but still dims after few seconds of inactivity. Is there any trick to finally turn this infamous auto-dimming off ?? IF I CAN, I would like to achieve this result WITHOUT using any apps, if possible. Oh my J5 is rooted of course, I can even tamper with system scripts or variables, if u instruct me on how to do.
Thanks !

On my J5 screen never gets dimmed unless the display is turning off due the timeout.
There are apps which can dim the screen, including apps which "save battery". Maybe you have a kind of this app which does this?
Your screen turn off after 10 minutes or after the screen gets dimmed?
It seems a very common and complained issue between Android users from what I read here and there, so more a wanted feature by the original developers than a rom bug... not sure if u are referring to Android version, it is 5.1.1 Kernel id 3.10.49-787809.
No of course I haven't any energy saver apps installed or such things.
All system energy saving options are disabled already.
My phone dims the screen after abt 10 seconds, no matter how long I set the timeout
Oh it suxxxxxx... !!!!

Go in download mode and tell me if ur screen is still diming
I tried... it is NOT dimming in download mode... but it's obvious isn't it ? Only some minimal kernel portion is ran there, not the whole OS with all its power saving features etc...
Update
Lenovo fixed the issue in the latest update with my initial method which was switching off the CABC in the backlight controller which gives us a brightness boost. So obviously it is not dangerous.
Old Message:
So having achieved root, I was looking into the easiest of the issues. Some call it flickering. The "feature" is called CABC and is supposed to save battery. But obviously this comes at a cost of the display constantly adapting the brightness to the content which can cause flickering depending on what you have on the screen.
With root this can be switched off. Alternatively a new kernel could solve this without root. In both cases an unlocked bootloader is still required.
Instructions:
Use a build.prop editor form the Playstore
Edit the variable "ro.qualcomm.cabl=2" and set it to 0. CAUTION this modifies the system partition. If you want to receive OTAs in the future you will have to flash the system partition with an original image or backup.
Reboot
Technical details:
There are three places where CABC can be switched off:
In the build.prop
In the device tree blob in the boot image/kernel. Specifically the DSI switch on commands in the LCD panel description contain the enabling of CABC
In the LCD backlight driver /sys/devices/soc.0/78b6000.i2c/i2c-2/2-002c -> could be dangerous because it increases brightness and the voltages in the backlight controller

I attached an Automate flow which disables CABC and guess what we get a brightness bump of about 20%. Now the maximum brightness of the display is even a bit brighter than my old Yoga Tab 2 and should be on par with the 3 pro
Make sure that Automate runs on system startup and has root enabled.

It turns out that if you disable the latter CABC is off even without modifying the former. Of course this requires ROOT to change. This could also be done in the kernel, but would need either a recompile or modifying the init.rd

Have you compared the battery performance with and without CABC disabled?

No, these battery life tests take a long time, which I don't have Time is better spent looking into the other issues. It shouldn't be too much of a difference.

Yap, I think so. The battery life is long enough. Thank you.
I would think as long as you manually adjust brightness to match your content, you'd get similar results.
I modified the thread to use a less invasive method. I am having issues with my tablet. I am not sure it was caused by this mod but just to be safe I recommend everyone not to use it any longer.

Everything works (also the display) but the battery drains and the back of the tablet gets warm even when the tablet is switched off. Could be completely unrelated to the mod, but who knows.
With latest official update I have a battery drain issue too. 15% down overnight...
I often have to be very persistent in training the phone for brightness in the auto mode. Especially in the evening, when the brightness slider is to the left of the middle. I set the desired brightness, but it is not fixed. You have to do it 10 times or more, and after a minute the brightness again lives its own life. Has anyone come across this on customs ROMs? Everything was great on stock.

Maybe you don't know auto-brightness can be trained due to users preferences. At least it works on stock.
Or don't you use auto-brightness at all?
I am accustomed to auto-brightness at any time of a day and I like to use it. I don't want to change it mannualy after each changes of circumstances.
However on the custom ROM the process isn't so easy. I just have doubts if it will be successful at all.

There is nothing special to say more here. Just in the auto-brightness mode, the user sets the slider to the desired level at any time. This is repeated a certain number of times and after that the phone remembers the new settings and, depending on this, the new auto-brightness algorithm works. The learning process for brightness is endless. You can adjust it anytime to your preference. In any case, it worked fine on stock and the phone memorized new settings very quickly.

I tried A11, A12, A13 ROMs, and after that I'm on A10 stock again. I think that's the best way for me to keep my nerve sells. Now the autobrigness doesn't even need additional training.
