I often have to be very persistent in training the phone for brightness in the auto mode. Especially in the evening, when the brightness slider is to the left of the middle. I set the desired brightness, but it is not fixed. You have to do it 10 times or more, and after a minute the brightness again lives its own life. Has anyone come across this on customs ROMs? Everything was great on stock.

Maybe you don't know auto-brightness can be trained due to users preferences. At least it works on stock.
Or don't you use auto-brightness at all?
I am accustomed to auto-brightness at any time of a day and I like to use it. I don't want to change it mannualy after each changes of circumstances.
However on the custom ROM the process isn't so easy. I just have doubts if it will be successful at all.

There is nothing special to say more here. Just in the auto-brightness mode, the user sets the slider to the desired level at any time. This is repeated a certain number of times and after that the phone remembers the new settings and, depending on this, the new auto-brightness algorithm works. The learning process for brightness is endless. You can adjust it anytime to your preference. In any case, it worked fine on stock and the phone memorized new settings very quickly.

oh! its a cool thing. Thanks
I tried A11, A12, A13 ROMs, and after that I'm on A10 stock again. I think that's the best way for me to keep my nerve sells. Now the autobrigness doesn't even need additional training.

Hey guys I'm having some concerns about my xperia play and so i want to know if i should be worried...
My screen flickers. ( Not on/off) but between shades. It's hard to explain but it drops between levels of brightness, but here's the deal i turn auto brightness off and it still flickers. Now i have noticed that the screen will dim ( flicker shades) with the orientation of the phone. Idk.
Also when I'm downloading the games thru xperia app it takes forever, i have high speed internet and I'm connected via WiFi but should i be expecting A 150MB download to take up to 45 minutes. Seems kinda slow to me.
Thanks in advance guys.
By Tue screen flickering if u mean the auto brightness increasing and decreasing immensely at times its normal since u cant turn off the auto brightness in our phone....
About the games..most of the games took 15-20 mins or less for me on an 8 mpbs connection

Is there some kind of other brightness settings, i turned auto brightness off. And I'm still getting fluctuations in the shade of color.
if you have root you can disable this, but it is only temporary as somewhere in the system it re-enables this.
create a gscript with su ability
start script below
echo "0" > /sys/devices/i2c-0/0-0040/leds/lcd-backlight/als/enable
end script above
do not include the start and end parts
lasts around an hour, stops the flicker in bad light situations

It wont turn off even if you untick it, its an anoying bug, hopefully custom roms/kernels will solve this, dont worry about the downloads, even with high speed internet, keep in mind most of the developers are small companies and cant afford expensive hosting, even the gameloft servers are slow imo

You can NOT turn auto brightness off on the Play, it is hard wired right into the os, even if you used an app or widget saying it if off it is NOT! there is nothing you can do until SE fix it or some members here mod the os,
All the Play's do exactly what your describing, lots of topic here and elsewhere about it, everybody moans about it!
And regarding downloads, things from the market download fast for me, very fast, but other stuff from other places can be very slow, gameloft for example, takes hours! just depends on the servers your downloading from.
Hey thanks guys for the information. When i get to a desktop I'll hit the thanks button for all of you. I think my WiFi was acting up last night, i was playing some zombies and downloading torrents at the same time.lol. anyways thanks guys again.

I think it works great too, but it is nice to have this little gscript ready for times when the autobrightness goes wacky and the screen flickers
Hey, i updated to the latest firmware that came out today 9. april 2016. Firmware version : G935FXXU1APD1/G935FNEE1APC5/G935FXXU1APD1. My Phone is a Nordic Edition S7E with Carrier Telenor Norway.
after the update everything works like it should except the Always on Display. The AoD works but its always on the lowest brightness... it moves around, shows what i ask etc but it wont get brighter when i go outside or shine something at it, auto brightness works fine on the screen when its on. my question is: does this happen to anyone else? this has to be a software bug within the AoS app or the OS itself :/ cheers
What version does it show in the AOD settings ( About AOD)
Version 1.1.14
I guess its a change, this is the version i have. Im on fw PB6
it seems like it does work tho much slower than before, i think they tweaked the sensitivity on the brightness, because before it changed waaaaaay to easy, now it stays on the right brightness for the area you are in, tho if you go from a dark room to a bright room it takes waaaaaaaaay to long for it to change, and when you take it out of you're pocket it will still be on the lowest brightness for some reason... so AoD is now useless outdoors if its sunny out, ill guess they will change it again since i think they over did it.
it is not a problem it is intended to reduce power uage.

iknow that, but the point of AoD is that you should not need to turn ON your display, now you have to if you are outside, since the update rate it so low on the brightness. for indoor use its awesome tho.

Idk about the brightness, mine bases itself off of lighting around me. As for it moving, that is to save your screen from AMOLED burn in.
I have a real problem with AOD, after the latest T-Mobile April security update, AOD doesn't move and it should to prevent burn in. I currently have it turned off until it's fixed.

i know it has to move the issue is that it takes so long for the brightness to increase/decrease after the update when the light changes in the room/place you are, so when you are outside and take your phone out its on the lowest brightness, so you cant see anything, it takes over 20 sec before it increases the brightness. but why there is so many " latest version" of the AoD is weird if you ask me. it worked before the firmware update tho it increased the brightness to the max much easier before, so it used a lot of battery, i think they tried to fix this but overdid it. that is why i'm asking if its happening to anyone else.

I don't know why they just don't put it in the Galaxy App Store so that all can have the latest version.

Yeah they really should put it in the app store, just like they did with the edge features, but i didnt receive the new updates yet, so im waiting for it
i did a test now, it only changes brightness when the AoD moves for me, i guess that is how it should work, i don't remember how often i did back on the PB4 firmware but it was much more sensitive that is for sure.
latest firmware did break AOD for me too, T-Mobile US. AOD no longer moves. Not sure if I noticed before but waking the screen up now with power or home button, the screen fades in somewhat. It's a very quick fade in but noticeable because it's not instant.
I am seeing some serious problems with the AOD- I even asked for an exchange thinking something was defective. I got my new phone today and it reacts in the exact same way: AOD brightness changes completely at random ie I am not able to see any sort of correlation between how dark/light it is where I am. AOD version is 1.1.06, while the firmware version is PB9.
The other issue I am seeing is with GPS- worst that I have seen until now. I tried it with GMaps and a couple similar apps- the arrow that shows the direction does not move around based on which way the phone is pointing. This was the exact same on the phone that I sent back in exchange for the new one this morning..

Help? Anyone?
It's been a while since I've owned a Samsung, and I was always rooted with my LG. Trying to resist the urge to root and take control, but this is driving me crazy.
I've removed the check from the Auto-Brightness box a few times, but then I notice my phone dimming on its own and find the box mysteriously checked again. Sometimes it happens, and I'll look to find it isn't checked. I've also changed my display from Adaptive to Cinema, but it still changes on its own.
I've looked through everything I can think of in settings. Is there a setting unique to Sammy that I'm missing that causes this? My OCD is being challenged! If this can't be controlled without root, then I'm out of excuses for not rooting. The ads almost did the job.
Using my G935P S7 Edge
Just guessing here, but under display in settings do you have adaptive display selected? If so, try choosing one of the other options and see if that makes a difference.
That is from sunlight feature, it doesn't change your brightness, just the gamma. This allows to see your device easier and clear even the screen shing at the sun. When your in outside, it would increase the gamma and shine the phone directly from sunlight. This isn't a issue.
I don't think it changing gamma, it actually changing the brightness the brightness slider is moved from where I set it

Thanks for the comments.
I thought the display mode might do the trick when unchecking Auto-Brightness didn't. As I said in the OP, I changed it from Adaptive to Cinema, cause that sure sounds like it makes sense.
Not sure about the gamma changing. The last two replies sound convincing. I'll have to search it and learn. One thing, though, I have noticed the brightness slider has moved at least sometimes.
I don't "not like" Samsung. Years ago, I had the S3 and liked it. LG since then. So, I'm in learning mode with the functionality. I have one more week to be able to return this to Best Buy. If this is a thing that can't be stopped, it might be enough to make me do that. Development for the G935P seems like it's a while away from having rom options to take back control, and after years of rooting, I wanted to make an solid effort to not root. I rooted my LG G3 within 20 minutes of having it home, so I'd forgotten what it's like to run stock.
Using my G935P S7 Edge
Is there a way to turn off screen dimming at 5%. In some situations (like outside) I can't see anything. Obviously you can turn the brightness back up. But I want to keep it from turning it down automatically
Use macrodroid to setup a macro

No. This has been an issue on every LG device I've ever owned. I took basicreece advice and set a macro. Just finished testing it out and it works. Apparently after further digging this is a firmware limitation and there is no way to prevent this from happening without flashing another rom. Unfortunately I have the Sprint variant so my options are limited. Probably swap it out for my essential phone.. just sucks. This basic feature is so annoying. Especially when outside

I've used tasker to create a profile that below a value of 700 in light detection it turns off the "AutoBrightness" and uses a fixed table. Above that the "AutoBrightness" is switched back on.
You can long press on profile, then use impost to get it into tasker.
I saw the new Android 9.0 update has been released for a little while now. I have been confident in Google's software updates while owning this phone until they broke the multi-touch on 8.1 and did not provide a downgrade or alternative solution. I like to play Pubg a lot on my phone while on my bus rides around my city so performance, battery, multi-touch and the very small day to day things are very important to me.
I looked on the comments section of the Android update forum for 9.0 and it seems the only small reported bugs were related to the pixel launcher. I use Nova Launcher so I don't think this will be an issue. I wanted to hear back from pixel 2 users and see if any of the OLD features on the previous 8.x release were made unstable or broken in any way.
Also how's the camera and battery life? Those are the main selling points of the phone I believe (for me at least)..

Camera and battery are both fantastic.
I don't get the hatred by some here. It's a divided opinion for sure, though as with anything else the ones displeased make the most noise.
Long story short, I think it's an awesome upgrade and have not experienced any bugs.
Agree with crixley... there were some new things to learn, but once learned, I actually appreciate them quite a bit. Android 9 gestures are quicker and more natural, and the wasted space of recents has been reclaimed with helpful stuff like switch orientation. Battery life is better with the Adaptive Battery setting enabled, security has been upgraded. Although I understand that it "feels" like a big change for no reason... a lot of users are going to dislike change if the benefits are not easily apparent. I admit that there have been a few kinks I worked through.. such as having to re-pair bluetooth devices, resetup android auto, and a few other quirks.. but I am a happy Android P user in the end.
The Pie update on VZW broke Android Auto USB connection to my Pioneer AVH-2300NEX. No other issues to report, but it's enough for Verizon to send me a warranty replacement phone.
Yes, I did do all the necessary troubleshooting. Yes, it worked great up to the time of the OTA to Pie. Yes, I even tried different cables. Thanks for your concern lol.
Been running Android 9.0 since the developer previews never had any issues. Battery life is much better than before and camera works just as great as always. I also use Android Auto everyday and haven't had any issues with it that other have described. I used to run a custom roms and always used the the fling nav bar so I'm pretty used to swipe gestures and prefer them more than the standard nav bar.
Battery life has been much better than Oreo as long as you don't configure your phone's IP staticly versus using DHCP when connecting to a Wi-Fi connection. We've been able to replicate it with at least 4 users whom all use different router make and models. See this
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/help/battery-life-considerably-worse-update-t3827066
No bugs here since update. Only been a few days though. Battery life is definitely better. Good update just need an unlocking route for Verizon and my life will be complete.

That's my only complaint as well. But the update other than that is nice.
Edit I dislike that turning location to battery saving/gps / off moved to one switch on or off.
My battery life went from 8hr average SOT on Oreo to about 5.5hr average on Pie. I'm going back once I find the correct OTA update to flash (so I don't lose any data). Battery Saver has been on since Day 1.

I'm getting 8+ on pie. You need to go into location /Google location accuracy and turn that off. It's like GPS on constantly. There is no longer battery saving mode on Pie. I've had mine off from the beginning and all is well. 2 days off charger and 7-9 hours screen on time. Hope this helps

All of that was already off, but I'll go through the entire device today and see if there's something else I can find.
Is it just me or did the overall brightness decrease? I know the whole scaling is logarithmic now, but I'm talking about 100% brightness on Oreo vs. 100% brightness on Pie. Seems to never get as bright as it used to, even when maxed out.

I am glad I am not the one. The brightness has gone to dim at 75%.
Battery life is resolved, which was the main thing. I just wish the maximum brightness was fixed, along with a better (full dark) theme for us on AMOLED screens. Anything to get 3 Day usage is always appreciated. I'm at 2.5 Days now, so that's pretty nifty
