Are You Having Problems With Auto Focus? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed that a lot of people (myself included) have an issue with the camera's auto focus. The problem is that most pictures will go slightly out of focus. Even when touching the viewfinder to focus manually you can see the picture focus perfectly before going slightly out of focus and "going green" to indicate it thinks it's focused correctly. For me it seems that around 70-80% of photos are slightly out of focus. Several users on Reddit have also reported this issue.
Have you also noticed this behaviour?
If you have please star this official bug report to get the issue looked at sooner http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=43153&thanks=43153&ts=1359017856

I had this issue and it drives me nuts. I had to switch to an aftermarket camera app that does a better job of autofocus. Hope a future version such as key lime will address this.

It's probably an easy fix for the Android team, hopefully the 4.2.2 update sorts it

I have this too!!!!! Voted!

FFC mod back camera sucks?

So i bought and installed a FFC, (bought 2, installed both). the font was blurry but i fixed the focus. But the back camera is really bad compared to my old one. i even switched back to be sure. ive only tested at night indoors because its nighttime now, but the FFC version has lots of awful lines running up and down the screen when i look through the viewfinder, whereas the vibrant version is crystal clear. when i take a picture it comes out much better than what i see in the viewfinder but still a bit of the lines. anyone else have this issue? im running bionix1.8 i tested both cams on that and only the ffc version has this issue...
Are you serious? This is the first time anyone has EVER complained about this! Alert the media...stop the presses...call you Senator...and WAKE UP THE PRESIDENT!!!!
post some picture so we can see
Dude, so you spent say about $60 for two replacement cameras, pried your phone apart, drilled a hole, and subjected your screen to disolving fluids but couldn't be bothered to read the whole thread?
no drilling involved.
someone delete this thread. read the ffc thread, as its a well known side effect. still waiting on the rom dev's to get theres so they can really tweak and make the ffc work to its fullest
All I have to day is I sure am glad I didn't do the mod. In all the excitement almost nobody mentions this problem. I know I never saw it mentioned, and I read several walkthroughs explaining the mods and how to do it.

Please DON'T delete this post. Why would we have to read the whole thread for such vital information. That thread is ginormous.
Dude, the ffc is much lower resolution than the rear camera, if you replace your rear camera (which is what it sounds like you did) it's a massive downgrade.

ok, you guys are being too hasty.
First you guys jumped and bought cameras before support was even added.
Now, you guys are QQ'ing because it's not working right, eventhough you all now the devs don' have cameras yet.
Just be patient and wait for the devs to get their hands on cameras.
crying and ****ing on a forum are not going to resolve your problem.
The warehouse is not going to accept returns.
So you might as well keep using your original camera until proper support is added for the FFC.

dude it is suppose to add a ffc to the phone not replace a back camera with a front you should still have a 5mp back cam
the part even said so
Main camera: 5MP
Front Facing Camera: 0.3MP
i there is a problem then it could be a bad batch of cameras or a conflict in the phone,
am haven't done this yet because i don't want to scratch the glass (maybe some one will come out with a replacement part) i want mine to look as oem as possible

I can 100% assure you ALL the cameras where extensively tested prior to shipping. I have been in contact with the CEO of Global for 2 weeks now. The issue with the quality of the pictures is believed to be in the kernal. the i9000 kernal differs greatly from the vibrant kernal. The devs are working on it and as soon as they have a solution im sure everyone will know! just be patient.
Yeah I read a good ten pages of threads and 2 hardware guides and a software guide and watched a hardware video all without a single mention of this.
After all your flaming I did dig a bit deeper and found it, but this is something that should be in caps at the top of every thread.....

This is Why I want a portable cam
This is Why I want a portable cam that could be plugged into the phone and use it as a FFC or as a portable camera head so I can look inside walls and take pictures with the phone as the capture device (would be awesome for my work). Then i could use it as a FFC and not be bothered with trying to redesign a phone and installing a junkie little .3 meg camera

Camera issues since Gingerbread update!!

Ever since I updated to gingerbread, my camera takes HORRIBLE pictures if I'm in a setting that has even the smallest amount of low light. My camera used to perform 100 times better than this. The flash used to illuminate small rooms fairly well. Now it is terrible. Even if I turn the brightness setting of the camera to the highest setting, it makes no change. I did experience this issue with the Shift roms as well, but I thought it would not have been a problem with the official release. Is anyone else having similar issues? Forgive me if this has been discussed. I searched the forums, but could not find anythig. I know brightness issues have been reported, but I believe they were all just in reference to the screen brightness.
I am also having issues after the update... Two things I noticed, there is a delay in the time it takes for the phone to actually take a picture and the phone has been randomly been crashing (restarting) after taking a picture..
Not fond of the update..
I posted this a while back, I have the same Damn problem so annoying, but it still take grate pictures just having to avoid low lighting

Oh and its not screen brightness, I noticed the flash is way off, when you take a picture in low light to no light, it seems that the camera and flash are timed right
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
My issue last night with my camera is I was trying to use it as a backup for a wedding until I got batteries to swap out of my Canon. I tried using it in low light and got a FC 4 separate times. Not just a FC but a complete reboot. There is also the thing of my brightness setting going to max after using the camera. It didnt just happen on my camera, also happened on my wifes and she is on a different ROM from me. I use Miks and she is on OMJ, well almost the same ROM. Anyway it was annoying waiting for the camera to reset and Yeah I did miss some of the shots that shouldnt have been missed. That'll teach me to bring extra batteries for my Canon.
In the spirit of GB and camera issues, I recently had a message saying my drivers were missing. Yay. Had to reboot, and it cost me a picture of my aunts ceremony. *sigh*

I have reverted back to Froyo. I don't notice how often I used my phones camera in low light conditions. Hopefully there will be a fix soon enough.

For low-light pics, try changing your ISO settings from Auto to ISO200 or even 400. It will make pics a bit grainier, so experiment a bit. I normally run 200 without issue.
EDIT: BTW, which ROM are you running? Stock OTA? Custom?

If you have an unrooted phone with Froyo, just search xda for Unrevoked3. It will explain everything and its simple. If you are unrooted with Gingerbread, you are out of luck at the moment. I was already rooted and installed a rooted gingerbread Rom.

Do you have issues with the Gingerbread camera and dark pictures

Hi,
Since going to Sense gingerbread ROMs, my camera has been horrible in low light pictures. It seems like the flash is firing just a little bit too early. By the time the shutter opens, the flash has pretty much done its thing, and the picture comes out very dark. I have tried every single combination of Sense GB ROM and kernel that is currently available, and I get the same result with every single one. I have also tried all of the cameras available in the Market. I get the same poor results with every single one of them. The only way that I can get a decent low light picture is to flash back to a Froyo ROM, or over to an AOSP ROM. The pictures taken in any Froyo or AOSP ROM come out good and bright in all conditions. I think that there must be some sort of incompatibility with Gingerbread ROMs and the camera in my phone.
But of course just like every other thing with these phones, not everyone is having problems. But there are quite a few people that are. I've been trying to work out whether it is some sort of software issue, or hardware. We all know that there are four different hardware versions on the Evo. And from what I can determine, there are two different types of cameras in use. I started a little survey in one of the ROM threads in development. But I thought that I'd move it up here so that more people could see it and participate. I am hoping that if you know for sure that you are having the dark low light photos problem or if you know for sure that you're not having the problem that you could post information in this thread about the ROM you're running, your hardware version, the camera that you have in your phone, and whether you're having the problem or not. To determine the camera in use, do the following:
Using root explorer navigate to sys/ you will see android_camera and android_camera2. Android_camera is the rear camera. Go into that folder, hold over sensor until you see the options menu. Scroll down to View As Text and that opens the file with Camera brand and model number. Post that information to the thread, along with the other information requested above. I'll start:
ROM: Classic 0.0.4
Hardware: 0003
Camera: samsung S5K3HIGX 8M
I do have the issue
Thank you to anyone that responds to this.
To my understanding its software. Gb causes flash to work improperly causing overexposure dark pics etc...

Right. Not everyone on GB has the problem though. I am trying to find something that everyone with the problem has in common. It's not the camera itself. Maybe it's the camera and hardware combination. That's what I'm hoping to determine with this thread.
Tried everything you have tried above with no good results. Sprint store is a waste of time don't bother. I hope ICS makes things better.

Probably true, but I think that I'll give my Sprint store a try anyway. Who knows. They might be able to come up with something. Just wish I had more info to give them going in. You and I both have the same issues, but different cameras. The only similarity is the HW 0003.

I took it to two stores, one said my flash was going bad they replaced it so they say, but that wasn't it. Another store said my camera was loose they fixed that but still the same problem. This one rep was pissing me off because he was taking pictures in the bright ass store telling me my camera was fine when i clearly told him it happen at night or in low light places. And i told him to duplicate the problem he will need to go in a dark room or somewhere low lit but clearly they didn't do it. But you may have a different experience, good luck to you. please post what happens at your store.thx. Oh, also i wanted to tell them so badly about asop and froyo roms working but couldn't.

I plan on telling them about it working well on Froyo. I restored my nandroid from right after I rooted and took a few pictures. Then I went back to Classic and took the same pictures. The difference is huge. But yea, cannot mention AOSP at all.
Also, I'm not unrooting my phone. I installed the latest stock GB ROM. Hopefully they won't dig too deeply into that. I've had really good luck with this non-corporate Sprint store down the road. Hopefully my luck will continue today. Though I'm not exactly sure what I expect to get out of it. I mean I really don't think that the problem is fixable on the phone. But I'll feel better once I've exhausted all possible options.

Sounds like he was trying to avoid addressing your problem by making it look like a non problem. I'm guessing possibly in front of other people so it looked like you were just wining. If they can't replicate it, it must not be happening right?
That is exactly what went down in the store, exactly!

The Sprint store guy admitted that he could see the issue. He had an older Evo around with Froyo on it and he compared and sure enough, there was a big difference. He said that the only thing he could really do would be to order a replacement, but that the replacement might have the same problem or some other problem. So at least he was honest with me.

How about posting your hardware, camera, and ROM...
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Multiple threads on this topic, but posting here since this is the most recent.
First, the basics:
Evo 4G rooted
still running standard Sprint Rom (basic tweaks, nothing serious)
Camera Zoom FX 3.2.2
Yesterday I realized that I'm having this issue as well... pictures are certainly coming out darker than before. This isn't the first time it's occurred, but up until now didn't realize it was reoccurring thing. It's further exaggerated when shooting from a lower light area towards a brighter area (example: from inside a car of something outside). No big shock there.
I installed Camera Zoom a few months ago in hopes of increasing the quality of pics (over the stock camera app). Overall, it was very successful. However, for the most part I take pics indoors or under a decent amount of overhead/ambient light. Thus far, no problems. But it seems that the increase in pic quality with Camera Zoom has also brought an increase in darkness to these pics in certain situations. Not so good.
Will try to find an answer.

Nexus 7 Backlight Flicker?

Does anyone else have this problem with their nexus 7? I just got my nexus 7 today but I noticed that the backlight seems to flicker randomly
It doesn't look like much in the video but it is very noticeable and gets annoying when you're reading an ebook like i was.. Here's a video showing the problem.(It's near the end)
VIDEO LINK: h**p://db.tt/28eD0NLk (It happens around 9 second in) (change ** into tt)
For whatever reason this forum would not post a video link to show the problem.. for those who wants to know what it looks like please PM me..
But basically the screen flickers randomly ..
Is this a software problem? Should I go back and get it exchanged?

I havn't tried it yet..do we know if it's a hardware problem or software?
I just got it today so I can still return it if it turns out to be hardware
We really dunno at this point, but we are speculating software since both HTC One X and TF300 had similar problems and were fixed with firmware updates. Also someone switched it three times and all of them had this issue. Also try to run the screen in a pitch black room and tell me if the screen flicker is there. I may have a theory but need some other people to see if their units are behaving the same way as mine.
You can still post the link when you alter it a bit, insert a few *** into it, for example.
I turned mine on as soon as I got hold of it, no flicker, managed to go through and set up things, powered off and left to charged.
Coming back to it the screen would appear to turn on and off randomly, I thought it could be an app controlling a proximity sensor (I have one on my phone and I was EXTREMELY tired!), when I took it into the light there was no change.
I found that shaking it would help it flicker on and off at all intervals but didn't fix it. In the end I just started pushing random areas on the back, just before the issue went away I pressed around the bottom left quarter of mine and haven't had an issue since!
Glad I wasn't the only one with the problem though and would love to actually find out what it was.
Hope this helps!

h**p://dl.dropbox.com/u/13153603/Videos/VID_20120715_100253.mp4
it is using google map and you can see the constant flickering.. It doesn't look very severe in the video but it is actually very noticeable and annoying
I have the same issue with mine. It only seems noticeable when I have the brightness set to the lowest setting and on a page that is predominately white. I don't think it's the proximity sensor though, because it happens both when I set it manually to the lowest setting and when I'm in the dark and the tablet sets the brightness all the way down itself. Hope the next update fixed this, because it's really annoying!

I first noticed this flicker in a darkened room, so yes, it is definitely something going on. I'll try disabling auto-brightness to see if that matters.

I can attest that the flicker is ever present in a pitch black room as well.
Like this?
There are a few videos on youtube, but i cant post links but if you do a search you can find it
I noticed a flickering in chrome yesterday. But only in chrome and only while the page is rendering after it fully renders no more flickering.
Everyone turn off wifi and I guarantee it will go away. It happens when using wifi which makes it hard to believe that a software update can fix it.

Reboot while in camera

When taking pictures in low light situations with flash (it seems low battery enhances the probability) sometimes the pictures get artifacts (white lines close to the top/bottom of the picture).
And sometimes the phone gets stuck and reboots. The camera tends to make clicking noises right before it reboots that are louder than when usually focusing.
Look at the screenshot and at the end you can see the reboot. You can see a sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
I don't know if this is hardware or software related but a user suggested this to be a problem with the stock camera app.
I had this problem on two devices already and it seems to be on all devices, maybe just rarer for some people? Not sure.
If you have this problem vote for the following issue and hope google fixes it:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=49702&#makechanges
I had something similar happen to me once last week. I was viewing my photos in the stratosphere mode and would hit the back button. I had to repeatedly do this to scroll to the next images after viewing them. When hitting the back button it would take me back to take a picture, but one time, it took me to a blank screen with the camera buttons still working. I ended up needing to restart my phone. Not sure what happened there.
I have only seen this once. It didn't occur again, so I haven't chased it down

Look at the screen shot and at the end you can see the reboot. What I'm worried about is the sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
Are these reboots hardware or software related? Should I get a replacement?

I seem to have the same issue. So far, it has only occurred when I am trying to take a photo with the flash on. One more observation: seems to happen more often if the battery is low. However, both of us might be having defective devices, as it doesn't seem to be a common issue looking the forums here.
No solution found so far. Tried a factory reset. Tried using another camera app. Nothing helped. Might try flashing a custom ROM.

All oft the things you described apply to my situation too. Also I noticed that pictures tend to have artifacts (white stripes close to the top/bottom). They always have the same distance from top/bottom but their length differs.
Also after the forced reboot there sometimes appears an extra picture in the gallery that is fully grey.

I don't seem to have the artifact problem that you described. Also there is a creaking sound sometimes just before it restarts.
Have you tried flashing a custom ROM? Did it help? Otherwise RMA is possibly the way to go.
I ordered the phone from US using a mail forwarding service, so an rma will cost me another $100 or so. If you or anyone else can confirm that it is definitely a hardware issue which can be resolved by getting a replacement, i might go for it.

I was on AOKP PUB Krait 05/02 by Stevespear and Harsh Kernel and I did have a reboot there once too. Also this is already my third Nexus 4 since I had to replace it 2 times due to issues (bottom side creaking 1st device / yellow blotches 2nd device) and this one really looks good only this camera reboot issue is left.
But my first phone did have the issue too, I didn't have the 2nd phone long enough so didn't see it happen there. I have no idea if it is a hardware or software issue but my bet is that all Nexus 4's have that issue.
It just seems that it appears rather rarely and most people don't notice it. Or it could be that the voltage is too low and that would explain why it happens on some phones more than on others since not all chips are equal. I was wondering if somehow setting the flash to be weaker so it draws less power would solve this. But I am just a user and don't really have an idea.
PS: I won't get my phone replaced since I can live with this issue (it happens rather rarely) and I went through 2 replacements to get this device which is close to perfect but I wouldn't mind if someone came up with a solution.
That makes me feel really lucky to have gotten a nearly perfect device. Anyway, guess we just have to live with it then. Lowering the flash intensity sounds like a good idea. Will check if some rom/kernel/app can do it for me.

Having the same problem here on 4.2.1 and 4.2.2. I think it might be the buggy stock camera/gallery app because I can't replicate the problem on the Camera Zoom FX app.
Edit: I remember having this problem on 4.2.1 and then clearing the gallery app data and not ever seeing the issue happen again. I will try the same on 4.2.2 and see if it fixes it too.
I added a link to the issue on OP guess that is all I can do.

I have had this issue with the Camera FX Zoom app also. So, at least in my case, I guess it's a hardware/camera driver issue. Anyway, I also cleared the gallery app data a few days back and haven't faced this issue since then, but haven't taken enough pics with flash to confirm that the issue is truly gone.

Has the issue disappeared after clearing the app data for you? I certainly have not faced any reboots since doing it.
