Is it possible that the Franco kernel can cause the phone to search for network infinitely? I mean when I am in menu > wireless & networks > mobile networks. It will just keep searching and won't stop to let me choose which to connect to which is annoying because EE has T-mobile and Orange; the latter is horrid and slow even with full 3G signal. For some reason the phone is stuck just connecting to EE Orange when normally if I go into aeroplane and out it will connect to EE T-mobile as it has the stronger signal. Or is it something that's wrong?

Try punching *#*#4636#*#* into the phone dialer and scroll down to the bottom. Just above the buttons at the botton on the screen should be a drop down menu displaying which network connection you are currently accessing. Press on that to open up the menu from here you can force your network preferences ( this is the area where you can also take advantage of the n4 dormant lte capabilities, but be aware this will increase battery usage) try locating the network you wish to be on and press it, give it a couple seconds is should disable the current one and a moment later as long as it is available should connect to your choice. Not sure if this helps in anyway but it is always fun to mess around with as many setting as you can never knowing which one will solve your problem.

Not sure if this is the correct forum but I want to be able to turn of roaming completely. I have a US G1 on the three UK network with the US RC33 installed and root. I have disabled data roaming. Here in the UK we're too small a country to want to roam! Coverage is usually good enough from a single network. However, I occasionally get the little 'R' symbol on the single strength icon and an annoying prompt saying I need to turn data roaming on because I lost connectivity. I have to go into the settings and manually select the "3" network again.
What I want is to either be connected to three UK or not connected to anything at all. Is there a config file I can edit to allow this? Would the UK RC8 firmware do this for me?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doesn't a 3-UK SIM try to roam onto O2 though?
You could set the phone WCDMA only and NOT roam onto a GSM network.
Use AnyCut to shorcut Activity: Phone Info
From there under preferred Network Type; set to "WCDMA Only"
HELP!! Roaming signal won't go away
I have an unlocked G1, JF1.41 v 1.1 and i just updated to the RC33...but this also happened when i had RC30 , v 1.0...
I put in my canadian Fido sim card and everything works fine but i have that little "R" on top of my signal strength bar...
I think this means its data roaming? if this is the case...it should be okay (even though its going to bother me) because my service provider says my EDGE/Data is disabled (i do not have a data plan, NOR do i wish to incur any data charges.. i'm fine with my free WIFI ) .
However, if this means im roaming on another network, i dont want to be incuring any long distance charges on my phone EVEN when im using my own FIDO network..
I went to settings - about phone - status, and here are my specs (some of them):
Network: Fido
Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Data Access: Disconnected
i'm pretty much just concerned about the ROAMING part of it... my other friends with G1's are with rogers, don't have that little R..
how do i get rid of that?? please and thanks!
Try manually changing the network in Settings>Wireless controls>Mobile networks>Operator selection
G1, like all GSM phones, will roam onto networks specified on the SIM if it can get a better signal. As long as the relevant operator has a roaming agreement in place, there's nothing to be concerned about, other than the R symbol in the status bar.
Mod: move this over to General discussion please.
I did change it and selected my Fido network (it's the only network available).
Thanks. I've set it to WCDMA only so I'll see how it goes.
Please help??? i still have that little R on top!
After I got home I found my phone had lost its connection. It didn't seem to be searching for the network. I had to go into settings, search for networks and then select three again. Is there any way to control if the phone does a search for networks automatically?
Looks like it reconnects to three on its own after a while. I still get the annoying popup about turning on data roaming though

As has been previously mentioned, Three will "roam" onto another network if it goes out of Three's own 3G network coverage because Three does not run its own 2G network.
However, it isn't O2 anymore, it is Orange as of late 2006/2007. I *believe* that you won't be charged any more if you use data whilst "roaming" on Orange, so whilst you are in the UK it is quite safe to allow data roaming, but I would be inclined to check this with Three.

Dave
hello,
after searching on "3G" in the forum, i seems that the problems are just the opposite to my question, they all want 3G to be turned off.
Now I want to connect to 3G (with the "G" icon on the staus bar).
My problem is that it always connect on "edge", with the "E" icon in status bar and when I want to make a video call, it always says that there is no connection to 3G so I can't make videocall.
Anyone knwos how to activate 3G?
I looked into the connections, but I don't want to mess in it without knowing what I do.
BTW I'm in Europe (Belgium).
Thanks
You fell into the same trap I did when I first got a Windows Mobile phone.
G means GPRS and is the lowest, simplest connection speed.
G = GPRS. "Normal" internet speed (9.6-14.4kbps)
E - Edge. "Enhanced" internet speed (normally 48kbps, but can be higher)
3G = 3G internet speed (128-384kbps). Also allows video calls.
H = HSDPA. "Mobile broadband" speed. (1.8Mbps, 3.6Mbps or 7.2Mbps depending on operator).
You'll want to go to:
Start > Settings > Connections > Advanced Network
Make sure that HSDPA/HSUPA is enabled
From then on, it depends on the signal in your area. If you find that you're having a problem getting and maintaining a 3G or H signal, you might need to get an updated SIM from your operator. I got a new SIM from O2-UK and it solved my connection problems immediately.
I see that HSDPA/HSUPA is enabled.
Could it have something to do with the settings in connections (instead of advanced network settings)?
I will also check with my provider (sim card)
Thanks for the reply
i cannot connect to the internet not using wifi. i do however h an H symbol next to my signal. i dont get why i have the hsdpa but cannot connect. i've tried anything i can think of.
*i can't turn data connection on in my comm manager, it automatically disconnects and says wap.cingular not working or gprs not working somthing like that.
*in the connection settings i pick media net wich is automatically picks att but still won't
*in settings/personal/phone i left if auto defualts for bands
*settings/connections/advance network i even tried to put it to hsda ONLY won't work
the only new lead im getting is this Zenith post saying he got new sim card so now it's working. that's all im getting at now. but im even skeptical about that
If you are not getting the 3G or H icon then you either have no coverage or an incompatible SIM.
If you can't connect to the internet you either have incorrect settings on your phone, or your network aren't allowing you on their APN.
Suggest in all cases phoning your network to get clarification.

you wouldn't believe how i found out i had no internet. they say'd it was in the system but it was disabled in thier system. i put in my brothers sims and his work just fine. so i told them to look at whatever his plan is and they switch to what he had. anyways long story short i found out not my settings bc you just auto configure it connectin wizards, and wasn't sims card, it was stupid att. i was getting the H icon but not an H on my signal. anyways its all done now. thanks again guys
Symptoms
- You cannot maintain a constant data connection. The connection is often lost or dropped.
- HD2 reception indicator dances between G to 3G to H despite showing good reception, and user remaining stationary.
Counter measures - No cabs or registry tweaks needed.
Presented in the order I would try them. If the lower number levels don't work, then move up a level. These are offerred as advice from a UK based HD2 user, though may work for you elsewhere.
LEVEL 1
- Go to Comm Manager > Wireless Controls
- Turn the Data connection Off then On again.
This will usually get you back and running again faster than waiting for the HD2 to sort itself out.
LEVEL 2
- Go to Settings > All Settings > Connections > Advanced Network
- Disable HSDPA/HSUPA
This will stop your phone attempting to use '3.5G' and will mean that you only use 3G.
Remember to re-enable HSDPA/HSUPA when you are in an area with better reception.
LEVEL 3
- Go to Settings > Wireless Controls > Phone - Change phone settings
- Move down to Other Options > Band - Change baseband
- Change Network Type from Auto to GSM
- Change Band frequency from Auto to either GSM (900+1800)+UMTS or GSM (1900+850) . To make the decision, you need to know the GSM frequency your operator uses. If you don't know, you can just try both of the GSM options and see which works. No damage will be done by using the wrong frequency first time, and you can change back.
This will disable 3G and force your phone to use 2G. Most operators have decent 2G networks, so you shouldn't have the disconnects anymore, but you will have slower than 3G potential speeds.
Remember to change your phone back to Auto for both Network Type and Band Frequency when you are in an area with better reception.
Thanks for the heads up... will have to try some of these. I find it most annoying at times...!
Thanks for the advice, I do find those issues annoying. What are the benefits of using 3.5G? If they're aren't any major advantages and turning this off helps then I may as well leave it off.

The problem with this is that it b*llockses up your push email settings, if you use the phone to get email from an Exchange server. The better approach (assuming standard configuration) is to press and hold the power/end-call hard-button. That brings up a menu of four choices. The last of those is "terminate data connection". Click it. Anything the phone does which requires the data connection after that will automatically reactivate it.
3G 2100
These tricks may solve the issue for many but not for me because I'm in a 3G 2100 only network so I cannot switch to GSM. I will try to disable HSDPA/HSUPA to see if that works though.
The weird thing is that the issue occurs almost exclusively when I'm logged on an IM client and the phone stays in sleep mode a few minutes (say 15 min or so). After I wake up the phone the signal seems ok but the data connection is lost (IM, browsing, mail, weather update, etc.). It doesn't happen every time but very often, several times a day.
If I don't log on any instant messenger app the data connection is stable, especially with the new 1.66 ROM (I tried both Duttty's custom and official). In this case I lose data connection very rarely, in fact I din't even remember the last time I did.
Can anybody provide an explanation for this, what is happening with the connection between the IM server and the phone during sleep?

If your network supports it, you should have higher potential data upload and download speeds through using 3.5G (HSDPA/HSUPA).
In reality and every day use, on many networks you probably wouldn't notice the difference between 3G and 3.5G.
I'm on Virgin Mobile, which piggybacks on T-Mobile's network here in the UK. My speedtests in central London, show virtually no difference between me using 2G, 3G and 3.5G!!!! Which is ridiculous. The main difference I get as a HD2 user is much more stable data connection on 2G vs 3G/3.5G.
i own a samsung galaxy s2 ordered from uk,
everything working fine except for this serious issue that i have been trying to resolve till now.
i have a monthly internet subscription from my carrier and it always been working fine on my iphone ( i mean here connecting through the 3g network ). but in the S2 .. i have to use Edge to be able to access the internet ( the mobile network mode must be set to GSM only ). whenever i switch the network mode to GSM\WCDMA auto , the 3g icon appears but when it tries to connect to internet, the phone automatically switch to Flight mode and i loose the network signal. and this happens all the time. till now i am only able to connect to the internet by switching the mobile network mode to GSM only which only uses Edge network .
i have tried every possible thing to resolve this issue but nothing worked for me. please help
What country are you in? What carrier are you on? What bands do they use?
location location location.
Where are you from?
And what frequency does operators in your region operate.
just curious, have you tried hard/factory reset?
i am from saudi arabia and i am using Mobily network.
mobily is using HSDPA network as well as Edge network.
i did a software reset and still the same issue.
phone information:
Baseband version I9100XXKDH
Kernel version 2.6.35.7--I9100XWKDD-CL161513
Build Number GINGERBREAD.XWKDD
crazy idea - is there any blocking going on in SA or with that carrier? Have you used another not carrier supplied smartphone successfully on that network?
I have been always using their 3g network on my iphone. And still there network only on edge connection on the s2. What i have noticed is that the saved apn sometimes shows up and sometimes disappears

Hi, very similar issue here.
For this four days since I have got my GS2 everything was just fine. The data connection and 3G speed was great. Yesterday, all of the sudden all got crappy. Could not display any web pages. It starting to display page but after few seconds pop-up window appear which say "Data connectivity problem. The server failed to communicate. Try again later"
Interesting that my gmail, market, xda app working fine as normal.
I'm in Ireland on O2 now.
Baseband version I9100XXKDH
Kernel version 2.6.35.7--I9100XWKDD-CL161513

Can someone help to solve the problem, please. Is it possible that something with the hardware is wrong? Broken?
I'll perform the factory reset and will let you know.
i just managed to flash my device with the latest EXE1 dated May 3.
and i am still facing the exact same problem.

You are right the 3G/2G connection is there but not permanent.
If I press the Internet icon the home page, which is 'Google' appears (sometimes) immediately. I think this is because the page is very light. If I try to open a regular page it loads 1/3 of the content or nothing.
i just hope it is a software bug not a hardware problem
Type on the dialpad *#*#4636#*#* and force the phone to HSDPA only on the dropdown menu. This is a hidden menu on the phone.
Isn't this carrier related?

Unfortunately not.
I have spoke to the rep in the store. They reset all settings for me but it didn't help.
Just to double check if he wasn't wrong I've put the sim card in to my N900 and all data worked fine.
Bad, bad...

I'm on Mobily network in Riyadh, and 2G/3G is working fine for me. I stay on 2G most of the time to save battery, but have tested 3G and got around 3mbps.
I have the same Baseband, Kernel and Build number (rooted)
Are you using "Market Enabeler"? It can change your APN settings, and you need to restore the provider setting.
just rooted my device.
still same weird issue.
issue again: simply whenever my device tries to connect to H+ , the device automatically enters flight mode and automatically disable flight mode so that the signal bars come back without H+ and when i check back the saved APN i see nothing there ( thought i was there before ). and this strange behavior disappears when i switch the mode from GSM/WCDMA auto TO GSM only .. after i do this the device connects regularly to Edge network and i can browse the net.
so basicaly for me i will be only able to use the device on Edge instead of HSDPA or 3G.
im really hoping for help from here because i don't think i will find any help outside of this expert community.
regards
try to make it on obligatory 3G (WCDMA only) and check if the problem still there ..
still same problem juffo
i have noticed that another post are poping up talking about almost the same issure.
i hope a new firmware will fix this
Hi
since i flashed my n9005 with 4.4.2 i have problem with carrier switching,
i use carrier that allows to connect with network by two ways:
by mother carrier - let say nr 1
or by two other carrier with domestic roaming - networks 2 and 3.
when i use my network 1 - i can connect with LTE speed, while in roaming only speed H is allowed.
And my problem is when i manually connect with network 1 my phone keeps switching to 2 or 3 after loosing signal even for few seconds - in elevator or staircase.
I wanted to lock it on my network by i can't.
Didn't have that problem with Note2 LTE...
is there any way to lock on single network, i don't have option to disable roaming, there is only option for data roaming.
Have you tried just going to settings --. connections --> more networks --> Mobile Networks -> Network Operators --> selecting the #1 network? If you select one here, the phone should turn off Auto switching and it can't change to another network unless you select one manually via this method. Or at least, mine remains on 'no service' untill I select another when crossing the border.
