[Q] VNC Issues - Nexus 7 Jellybean 4.2 Rooted - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
(How do you do a pre-PS? Love that "Try these threads before starting a new one" thing...)
Ok so - Nexus 7, updated to Jellybean 4.2, successfully rooted. Installed your own (good work btw, looks really good, professional grade appearance) VNC server (nice work oNaips) but no matter what viewer I use or settings I play with and god knows I've tried to try them all, I won't promise I've not missed anything (I work in customer service - "I've tried everything!" is one of my most hated lines I just cant get it to work properly. (for example -> settings -> display access method (change if you are experiencing display issues) -> tried all 4 methods)
The issue: It installs, it runs, it starts, it all looks ok. I get a VNC viewer (TightVNC, RealVNC, the web version, to name but a few) and all I get is a snowy screen. Greenish snow, like the old TV static. Pictures Included.
Interestingly (or not?) when the tablet is off, the VNC screen is blank/black - the problem only occurs as soon as you turn the tablet on.
Wits end being reached, I know this should work and I trust the skills you guys have - Whilst I've never registered before I've used these forums for years, first starting back when I was rooting and installing custom roms on my HTC HD.
Many thanks in advance for any help you guys can give. Have a good one!

I have the same issue with my Nexus 7. I haveteied Tightvnc and Realvnc. The only difference is that I don't get just the blank fuzzy screen. I get a fuzzy recovery menu screen.

[ADB & ROOT] Control Android from your computer!!

ex-Windows Mobile users like me should know what My Mobile is..
Android has a similar app. Its called Screencast.
You first need to get the ADB, and you should be able to run commands on the shell. If you can, Screencast can do the rest.
root users can control the android's touchscreen as well as the keyboard, and non-roots can do nothing but watch (and record video)
download and run. if you have adb u must have JRE so it should work perfectly.

Ahh,gonna chk it out !!
thanks. i use something quite similar to look at the contents of my android... it's called myphoneexplorer. =D

NO control over android
I have a rooted phone with android 2.3.5, usb debugging enabled and the cracked display (digitizer not working too). I was able to see android screen on pc using adb and [email protected] but can not control it from mouse or keyboard. Any idea why?
Thanks! Saw someone doing the same concept on iOS.

Same here. I am running 4.2.2 on a nexus 5 and get the same thing. I am looking for a way to control phone through USB only. No internet this program seems to only do the display half of thing unfortunately. It is so frustrating that it's all over internet which I would think is much more complicated than just plug in and control but apparently not. Just getting so frustrated now.

I'm on a SGS2 i727R (rogers/fido version) Skyrocket running JB 4.1, rooted, usb debugging enabled and also cannot control through androidscreencast, only view. Phone's screen is busted, digitizer is gone but the non-screen touch buttons respond, as I'm able to make screenshots (power/stndby + home). My lockscreen is pattern so to manually input touch events to unlock my pattern seems pretty daunting.
To mention, I did buy another i727 (at&t version), did a blind backup of the broken one through cwm (4down, enter, 5down, enter) and restored it to the new one but all the calendar entries and notes I took through samsung's bloatware sNote, didn't restore and I had a lot of them. I can't seem to find where they're located on the filesystem and I never had a samsung account (required to sync your notes and calendar entries) so they're not backed up online. My guess is they might be encrypted locally and only be available to the same device/uid, though I might be wrong.
I was hoping to use androidscreencast to get past the unlock screen (pattern lock) and eventually export or sync the notes and calendar entries. Considering the phone's rooted, I'm wondering why I can't input touch events using androidscreencast. Is there an ADB command or a variable I have to change for this to be possible?

Just flashed CM7--few questions...

So last night I flashed my nook Color with CM7...works great, love that my nook is now a full featured tab instead of an eReader with some tab features...I have a few questions though:
1. Netflix installed fine, however any video I play is very out of sync and a bit choppy. I'm sitting right next to my router (wireless N 300, 30Mbit connection from my ISP)...is there a workaround?
2. Is there any way to get the stock nook store app back? I tried 'nook reader for Android', but upon first launch it said that the books that I already had weren't compatible with my device, and upon subsequent launches I can't click anything, it freezes as soon as it opens.
3. No matter how many times I set it/reboot my device, I cannot make 'screen unlock protection' work. I've tried the 4 digit code, pattern, and password, and upon setting any of them, turning the screen off and back on, it goes straight to the home screen with no need to unlock.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Not sure I am going to be much help but as far as the Netflix issue, you may need to change your build prop to reflect a different model/manufacture. I did this before and I have not had an issue yet. Here is the link for that in the forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078123&highlight=Netflix
You may also want to try the rotation build ones. For the Nook Color I love them because my case folds one way, and the rotation allows for proper viewing. Here is the link for that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178425.
I personally use the pattern lock on my device and do not have any issues. Though I think at one point I did (old age getting the best of me), and I am wondering if it works because I use ADWLauncher home screen.
I never really liked the Nook Reader and use only the Aldiko Reader so I cannot answer you on that either.

rooted nook believes it is a phone?

I use the Good Technologies email client to check my corporate email (my company forces us to use Good; so I have no other choice).
It works all well on my Android smartphone.
However, when I tried it on a rooted Nook Touch and I entered my email + pin (provided by my company) I get the following message “Your phone network is off. Turn on your phone network and click OK.” And I cannot get out of that loop and therefore never authenticate my account + email client.
How is that possible, my nook is not a phone...?
I know someone with a Kindle Fire (also Wifi only) and it works fine for him...anyone any idea what is going on here? Is there a register/setting that tells the nook (android 2.1 I believe) whether it is a phone or not?
Thanks for any hints!

It's probably the default message for the client. It has nothing to do with whether you're actually on a phone; the programmer just didn't differentiate between phones and other devices when he wrote that line. As to a solution? I would check to see if the wifi is working before using it.
Thanks...tried that (checked wifi works when using the browser) and no luck.
What is weird is that it worked for a friend of mine who has a Kindle Fire (wifi only like my nook). He never got the "Turn on the phone..." message...
Nook Touch
I am about to give up. One last shot at it...maybe someone out there has an idea: When I go into the Nook Color tools (came with the rooting), there is a tab (battery details) that specifies where the devices is burning battery power. In one sub section it lists phone idle: 4%.....and cell standby: 80%. When I click into the latter, it tells me time w/o signal is 100% and the time on time (4m 1s for instance).
I still suspect that somewhere there is a register that has been set during the rooting process to a value that convinces the Good Technology SW this devices is a phone (but just turned off). I wonder if I shoot root it again with a different methodology (that does not install too many of the Nook Color tools)? Any advise?
Good Technology email now working
Just wanted to let you know (although seems like not many care...), that the Good email client is now working on my new NSTGlow (I did not go back and tried it on my NST without Glowlight, which my wife now has, but I do not expect it makes a difference). I can now access my company emails!
I rooted the NSTGlow a while ago with TinyNoot and then installed the Good client, that worked. When I re-rooted it (after first restoring the original system) with any of the rooting methods that install Google app support, I could not (i.e., Good failed to intsall or more accurately to authorize access). I am not sure why - it is just an observation (Good asks me to turn on the phone which of course is not possible on my Nook...).
I do not mind the lack of Google apps from My Market, because using "Gemini App Manager" on my rooted phone and can make a backup of all MyMarket apps and then install them on my Nook (if I do not get it from the Amazon store).
System is really working well - but I miss
1) multitouch support (particularly for my browser (Opera Mobile) and ezPDF), and
2) usb/sound support
3) NookTouch Tools: to re-configure the buttons etc and the menu bar when pressing the "N" button.
Hopefully, these will be addressed soon .... ;-)

Try ReLaunch. It can assign itself to "home" and "library" buttons.

NST or NSTG? I have never tried this with my old NST.
Anyway, I noticed that the Good client version is also critical. I am using version 1.8.0.195
Good luck!

This is with the NST trying the latest Good version. Do you know if there is an archive anywhere that would have a .apk for the older Good versions like 1.8.0.195?
The AOSP (android open source project) did not have a common device tree for phones and tablets until Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) and was not even made with tablets in mind until HoneyComb (3.0). That being said Gingerbread and previous versions were written for phones so the underlying software structure is going to favor them in a way that uses "phone terms" to describe activity.
Now for "cell standby" consuming battery, you can assume that it is normal sleep drain. When I had a NC I removed the Phone.apk and other related packages and nothing changed. It was even said that it was pointless to do so as there was no positive effect on battery life.

[Q] help needed: stuck on startup screen after doing restore

I'm at wits end and am hoping someone here can help me. I recently bought a Nook Simple Touch (v 1.2.1), and tried to root it using this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351.
Things seemed to go OK and I think I rooted it successfully, but I got frustrated because the amazon app store wasn't working and I couldn't figure out how to get google apps up and going. So I figured I'd restore it back to original state, do some more reading, and try to root it again when I had more knowledge. I was able to get it to the screen to do the factory restore (# 3 on this thread: http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_restore_to_stock), but it is hung up on the start screen (the screen that says "nook by Barnes & Noble" with the dot moving across the five circles). It's been hung for over an hour.
I'm really frustrated - I've rooted phones before, and recently rooted a Nook HD+ with zero issues.
When I rooted it I thought I was making a backup by hitting the backup button before hitting the route, but I don't see any backup image on my SD card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
---------------------------
UPDATE:
ok, I am a huge fan of the Brontes but have never been so excited to see their faces as I am now! After a lot of frustration and cursing, but lots of persistence, I was able to successfully do the system restore, by doing #2 on this thread ((# 3 on this thread: http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_restore_to_stock)). It appears that option #3 wasn't really working (I hit the home button twice per the instructions, but then it turned into a cycle of hell).
So now I will proceed more cautiously, first being certain I figure out how to make a backup...
Hiya Droid,
Getting the google maps and market etc working is a bit of a faff quite frankly but it does work!
Heres the instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086582
Take your time and follow them step by step and you should be good to go.
Google Maps works great on the nook and is possibly the best app for it. The twitter app also works and it looked like the facebook app worked too (but it was huge!) Opera Mobile Classic is a really nice web browser to use with it, The opera mini that come pre-installed is a waste of time imho. Also UC Browser (with the squirrel) is the other web browser I recommend. I probably use it more than Opera Mobile Classic.
BTW if you are in the UK then the amazon appstore doesn't work and you can just uninstall it by doing a long press on the icon.
Hope you get it all working. I think the thing to do is just to take your time and not to get frustrated or worry when things go wrong. If you have a fresh nook then you have no data to lose anyway, and as you have found, there are a lot of ways to get you back to where you started!
Good Luck!
Freya
thank you FreyaBlack, I was able to figure it all out. Maybe my first download of nookmanager was faulty, the second time it worked like a charm. The market was a bit wonky but I think it just needed time to sync! Now I just have to figure out how dropbox works on this thing (I already use it on my desktop for audio files but need to figure out how to get those (audio files) NOT to sync on my NST.

Windows 10 Experience

So now that people are upgrading to the release of Win 10, I'm curious about your experience.
For me, it's a smooth OS with a lot of things I need to get used to but I have made some discoveries.
The task bar - on my main monitor won't auto hide. A search tells me this has been a bug for the last few technical releases. Oddly enough, all of a sudden, a few minutes ago, it started to work but I assume this will stop in the next reboot.
The Mail App totally sucks. No number of new emails in each account when you click on accounts. No view for all accounts. No using mouse/shift to select multiple messages. No Check boxes to select all messages in any folder. New incoming messages show up in the action center, only, but you have to open it to see them. Not getting desktop notifications.
Cortana looks like it could be good but setup has been a pain since for some reason my Microsoft LifeCam Cinema HD cam can barely hear my voice, even with level up all the way.
Camera App - totally doesn't open at all. I had to d/l a third party app which I don't like.
Settings page is tough to find things like Advanced Settings. That's WAS, oddly, in System/About but now it;s gone and replaced by other shortcuts. so setting the paging file size manually, etc is just gone for now.
Edge is the best browser yet by MS, but it's not going to get me to stop using Chrome
What are everyone else's thoughts so far?
It's nearly perfect. Drivers catched up, not a single incompatible program, major performance boost in games after installing the latest Nvidia driver. The only bug I've seen so far - Action Center's tray icon is lit on on system startup even though it's empty.
I'm recommending it to everyone I know, I've already installed it on 3 PCs I have access to. It's just 10/10.
Upgrade??
First, so far I like Windows 10 a whole lot better than Windows 8.1, but the upgrade has been a nightmare.
The upgrade on my AlienWare (Dell) laptop went smooth. No problems at all. The upgrade for my Surface Pro 3 (Microsoft) has been anything but smooth. Microsoft's own computer did not upgrade right. First, it installed Windows 10 Home even though the Windows 8.1 that was on it was the Pro version. It also wiped out all of my installed programs and apps. I didn't lose any data but the applications will all have to be reinstalled.
Mine won't even install on my Asus Transformer. Says Key cannot be verified....
If you are still having problems and difficulties upgrading your PC to windows 10, kindly follow this post on my website. A few clean up steps got my Dell system to upgrade to Windows 10 http://www.selftechgenius.com/how-to-geek-2/how-to-upgrade-to-windows-10-for-free/
OK, so here's a big one. I use my 500GB D:\ drive to store documents, downloads, pictures and videos by default. I tried to save a picture off the web to the pictures folder and got access denied error.
So I looked properties, security and noticed 2 things. 1, the folder was marked as read only and 2, there was and Unknown User account. I deleted that account, and changed the properties on both C: and D: drives and that fixed it but you should all go check to see if you have the same thing.
I'm thinking I'm going to get a 1 TB HDD backup to put all my personal things on, format both drives, then do a clean install. I've always hated doing OS upgrades on top of older releases and the few bugs I have, like the camera app not working or the VIA HD Deck app not opening are the reason why. I just have to wait for all my hardware devices to release Win 10 drivers
I wasn't a fan of Windows 10. Immediately after "upgrading" the track pad on my laptop didn't work properly anymore. Based on my research it's a driver issue with no solution until the driver is updated. Who knows when that will be.... I use my laptop a lot for school and can't afford to wait.
Microsoft also removed basic tools like paint with no good replacements in the app store. I also didn't like how it pretty much turned my laptop into a phone by calling the Control Panel "settings" and having an app store and stupid stuff like that. I went back to Windows 7 after less than an hour on Windows 10 and couldn't be happier.
I did like the UI, though. It kinda reminded me of the material design of Android 5.x with the flat colors and stuff.
I am very happy with win 10, got it on my Desktop and my Tablet and even though i had some touchscreen issues in the beginning it works well now on both devices
I did a clean install on my laptop, as opposed to the update on my desktop, and it's better. Cortana works right, etc.
My ONLY beef is the mail app sucks
I upgraded my Lenovo to Windows 10 with the media creation tool but after a week or so decided to do a clean install to get rid of the terrible bloat(though most of it I removed when I got the laptop).
I downloaded the ISO and CLEARLY remember choosing 64bit Home Single Language. But after I diakpart the drive and reinstall the OS I realize that I have a 32 bit version installed.
And my 15GB limit of "high" speed broadband is exhausted and I CANNOT download a 4 gig file on a 512 Kbps connection.
I'm stuck till next month or till my friend gives me the 64 bit ISO.
But its completely my fault, so guys BEWARE, don't make stupid mistakes!!!!
But I like the OS(mostly). After disabling Microsoft's sneaky data collection and automatic updates its all good. Don't forget to disable live tiles cause they hog bandwidth too.
But boot speed is faster, performance is better and multiple desktops and snapping is great!
[Moto E 2nd Gen 3G running CyanogenMod 12.1]
I don't like Windows 10 at all. It sucks on Tablet(Touch) and PC/Laptop. With StartIsBack++ you can fix Win10 a bit for mouse/keyboard, but the UI is still cluttered and ugly as hell.
Really?? I don;t have that problem at all, especially when doing a clean install
My upgrade went well.. But afterwards it was a nightmare. It took my DAYS and about 14 reboots just to get it unfrozen long enough to open task manager with ctrl+alt+delete. Then, suddenly, after a reboot, it worked. It is now even faster than 8.1 (although I sometimes need to use task manager to speed it up). All of my programs and files work.. Except for cam studio which didn't work on 8.1 either. [emoji13]

I totally agree with Mail app sucks. I sent some emails but sent items folder is still empty, not syncing.. And honestly, I don't like the settings app because eventually it forwards you to the control panel for lots of settings. So what's the meaning of this setting app, right?

Right. I just pinned Control Panel to Start so i can get right to it
I have Windows 10 pro. Whenever I try to connect to my pc using various remote desktop apps on my android, it gets connected for a moment and then it shows error message that someone else is connected to your pc please try later.
Any suggestions?

I did a fresh install, I like it, just that there's no direct access to the computer from the start bar, I managed to pin 'this pc' to it, but It wasn't good enough.
I added the start menu back from Stardock Start10.
fresh w10pro install here on an hp elitebook. no issues at all.
On Acer fresh update, no problems
I updated my Toshiba Satellite to Windows 10 and it runs smooth. There's only an annoying thing. Sometimes when I turn on the PC and log in it says that Cortana and Start Menu aren't working, so I must have to turn off and to solve this problem temporarily I have to press Shift while it turns on. But some days after it happens again.
