Hi guys,
I did do a search but couldnt find an answer to this. I have just rooted and installed PA rom to my phone to use the extended desktop etc. Thing is, there are 3 different tablet ui on their settings which i dont really understand? all are 1000p but diff dpi settings. Seems that if i 'lower' my dpi everything gets smaller, surely that should be the other way around as normally higher dpi = crisper image doesnt it? What ui are people using on PA?
I clicked on the help bit of the pa settings and it shows changing some stuff on the youtube app to make it look different but that doesnt seem to work either, was that only for tablets to get the 3d menu effect?
Thanks all
It's very easy. Dpi = size. That's it. Forget all this Tablet mode nonsense from the past. Dpi makes apps bigger or smaller nothing more.
Now apps bring layout containers, the programmer defines them. These containers tell the app how it should look on various devices and screen sizes. Paranoid android can read the actual layouts out of any app. And you can choose of course, again, app per app.
Every app on your system can have it's own size and layout. Everything is nicely listed on the hybrid manager. System Ui, the app that displays bars is no difference. We treat it in the same way. " tablet mode" means simply we set it to it's highest layout. There's several settings because you can decide how big you want it, these are presets that's all. You can finetune it in the interface section. Play around with it, almost nothing needs a reboot, not even switching UI's.
I sometimes wish xda would not ignore us. They haven't featured hybrid engine at least once so people still don't know what it is.
Ps here's a mini tutorial

Right column sets Skype into a higher UI. This is how it looks on a nexus 10. Try any app you like there's literally hundreds with awesome UIs that work great on your phone.

Thanks for the help mole, yeah i think i realise how the dpi works now it just confused me as i thought higher dpi would = smaller crisper text but i am clearly confusing that with resolution (thought they were the same thing).
Appreciate the mini tutorial will just keep playing with it

Unfortunately no. One thing that doesn't work: messing around with the system font size. I thought that might increase the size of the bar at the bottom but it didn't work. There may well be a registry entry that would increase the font size and thus the "touchability."

Idk how they do it, but you might want to look into it.

Possibilities
There are several possibilities there.
I don't know the resolution of that thing, but it could be that the bars are stock, the fonts are smaller, could be that it's using a non standard today screen but infact a plugin/overlay/shell. The bars are images saved in the theme files, so it's possible that using an advanced theme editor they were able to create non standard layouts, but either way I'd hazard a guess it's not something you can just do with registry/font/file edits on the device.
through a lot of messing of my own, I have been able to acertain atleast that no one thing you change in the UI is going to stay at just that.
Changing the folder background colour for example (like I set the programs folder background to black and font to white) meant that in my mail app and many others i couldn't read the text because it also affected their font colours.
The highlights on a lot of text boxes inside apps are now black too, so unreadable text, certain sections of various windows changed, etc etc.
So, either way, it will need some theme editing or some extensive modifications to the theme layout.

what I've come to realize, is that the icons and soft keys use the same pixel count as any other winmo phone, it's just that the pixels are smaller on our phones...lol
im bumping this in case someone knows something now
I've had my G1 for almost a week now, and during this time I have modded it, added a custom boot image and much more. However, there is one thing that has really been bothering me. And that is the colordepth of the screen. At 65,000 colors, it really isn't impressive at all. Pictures seen from far away are okay, but close up you can notice the phones attempts at creating an additional color (little dots of the same color in a web fashion) which really is kinda annoying. Also, why is it that wallpaper images on the G1 always look so blurry and fuzzy?
The default wallpaper feature sucks and uses some kind of compression that blurrs the wallpaper image. Use Wallpaper Set & Save instead, for full quality wallpapers.
The color depth of the G1/Dream is abysmal, but there's not much that can be done about that.
Is wallpaper set & save only for png's? Or does it make jpg's look better also? All my wallpapers are jpg format
Works great with jpg too.
I gave wallpaper set and save a try but I didn't notice much difference, I will keep experimenting with it.

Here's an enlarged example of the difference between default the wallpaper feature (left pic) and Wallpaper Set & Save (right pic):

Notice the "cracks" are a lot more defined in the right pic, giving more detail, and the colors are deeper/more vivid too.
Wow, your right that is very good. It must just be the wallpaper that I am using that probably isn't very clear in the first place. The only reason I am using the wallpaper I currently am, even though the quality isn't great is because it has a dock. Is there anyway I can put a dock on my own wallpaper? Is there a program I can use or a tutorial?
If you're relatively comfortable with photoshop and know how to utilize layers and blending options it's easy to make your own "dock". If not then it's quite tricky.
Haha yeah that would be a problem then. Ah well, Im sure ill get around to learning it one day.
Set my DPI to 175. I like the look. My brother says it makes everything too small. What ya'll think?

I myself find low scale dpi a really nice look.
I haven't tried 175 yet but I'll make sure to take a look at it.
Guess I should get a tablet to suit my needs lol.

I just like the look of high-res myself. If I could find a phone with a 4" 1080p screen I'd be all over it. LOL
That looks like ICS; does your phone app work at that DPI? I always had issues with that when I increased the DPI.
Yep. Its CM9 RC0 and phone app works fine.
Nice, thanks, I guess I'll have to give it a go again.
175 works great..I went into launcher setting and changed homescreen to 5x5 instead of the default 4x4. Makes the screen seem much bigger then it is.
I had to change it back to 200 cuz incoming calls crash my phone app although I was able to dial outgoing calls just fine.
That's odd, because when I set it to 175, I couldn't even dial. I've never been able to pull off that kind of setting on anything other than ParanoidAndroid and not have phone app FCs.
Go 160. 175 isn't an officially supported DPI for android
how do you change the dpi?

By build prop or LCD density app.

I tried 160 a bit earlier today and had the exact same issue with the phone app. I would be inclined to believe that it may be a matter of the phone app in our ROMs not supporting anything other than stock DPI without modification to the app itself.
I'm comfortable with 200. Everything works so far.....also I change mine using ROM Tools. Its a slider. But you can use Root Explorer to change the build.prop file as well. Either way works.
Hi,
Since the last Chrome update I've noticed that when zooming in on a website (these forums for example) that one post will be in a large font and another post will have a tiny font.

I've gone back to the older version and everything works fine. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem and if there was a solution other than downgrading?
I've noticed the same thing since the new update. I've also noticed that when you click on something. It doesn't flash blue anymore to indicate that it was pressed. Plus, when you first enter a website and start scrolling around before it's fully loaded. The page will automatically scroll back to the top when it's done rendering. My Nexus S used to do that and it drove me crazy. Hope they send out a quick fix for all this stuff. On another note, how does Google not notice these glitches before an update is released?.. Boggles my mind sometimes.
I've also noticed that when zoomed out the display is no where as crisp as it used to be. For example reading xda full screen in portrait it was quite easy to read, now it is quite blurred and the letters run into each other.
Chrome is a disaster, I really wish Google would sort it out, as I love the desktop version.

Is that what we are leaving it at? That it's a disaster? Firefox does this too. After searching, I haven't found a solution. Has anybody?

I think this is a good feature. Yes, it doesnt look like real page but i am reading texts more comfortable with this feature. Anyway, its not a disaster..

My workaround to still using chrome/chrome beta on xda, is to scroll down to the 'quick style chooser' and change it from 'xda 2013 beta' to 'xda 2010' that seems to totally sort out the wonky formatting on my nexus 4.
The feature is called Font Boosting in Chrome, or Font Inflation in Firefox for Android.
I don't think it can be disabled.

Going to be trying to set this up on my N5 when it arrives sometime today (so excited over a phone I feel like a kid on christmas haha)
The guide has two sets of images to use, one set being 728x1200 and the other additional one is 720x1280, which one should I use for the N5's screen? Or will I need to modify one of them to fit the resolution since it's 1080×1920 px?
Has anyone set this theme up on their N5 and can share their experience, things that may need to be modified for it (if at all?)
Thanks

Modify Wallpaper to 1080x1920 and set immersive mode/ expanded desktop mode on. Then run wild with the setup. Due to different screen size resolutions, you might need to play around in Nova settings a bit (particularly desktop grid) to get the far left page working properly.
I did this on my old phone which was running 480x800. Unfortunately, I no longer have the set up but of all the MCS themes there, this is probably one of the more functional ones and as a result, you'll probably enjoy this a lot
