I've had my G1 for almost a week now, and during this time I have modded it, added a custom boot image and much more. However, there is one thing that has really been bothering me. And that is the colordepth of the screen. At 65,000 colors, it really isn't impressive at all. Pictures seen from far away are okay, but close up you can notice the phones attempts at creating an additional color (little dots of the same color in a web fashion) which really is kinda annoying. Also, why is it that wallpaper images on the G1 always look so blurry and fuzzy?
The default wallpaper feature sucks and uses some kind of compression that blurrs the wallpaper image. Use Wallpaper Set & Save instead, for full quality wallpapers.
The color depth of the G1/Dream is abysmal, but there's not much that can be done about that.
Is wallpaper set & save only for png's? Or does it make jpg's look better also? All my wallpapers are jpg format
Works great with jpg too.
I gave wallpaper set and save a try but I didn't notice much difference, I will keep experimenting with it.

Here's an enlarged example of the difference between default the wallpaper feature (left pic) and Wallpaper Set & Save (right pic):

Notice the "cracks" are a lot more defined in the right pic, giving more detail, and the colors are deeper/more vivid too.
Wow, your right that is very good. It must just be the wallpaper that I am using that probably isn't very clear in the first place. The only reason I am using the wallpaper I currently am, even though the quality isn't great is because it has a dock. Is there anyway I can put a dock on my own wallpaper? Is there a program I can use or a tutorial?
If you're relatively comfortable with photoshop and know how to utilize layers and blending options it's easy to make your own "dock". If not then it's quite tricky.
Haha yeah that would be a problem then. Ah well, Im sure ill get around to learning it one day.

Unfortunately no. One thing that doesn't work: messing around with the system font size. I thought that might increase the size of the bar at the bottom but it didn't work. There may well be a registry entry that would increase the font size and thus the "touchability."

Possibilities
There are several possibilities there.
I don't know the resolution of that thing, but it could be that the bars are stock, the fonts are smaller, could be that it's using a non standard today screen but infact a plugin/overlay/shell. The bars are images saved in the theme files, so it's possible that using an advanced theme editor they were able to create non standard layouts, but either way I'd hazard a guess it's not something you can just do with registry/font/file edits on the device.
through a lot of messing of my own, I have been able to acertain atleast that no one thing you change in the UI is going to stay at just that.
Changing the folder background colour for example (like I set the programs folder background to black and font to white) meant that in my mail app and many others i couldn't read the text because it also affected their font colours.
The highlights on a lot of text boxes inside apps are now black too, so unreadable text, certain sections of various windows changed, etc etc.
So, either way, it will need some theme editing or some extensive modifications to the theme layout.

what I've come to realize, is that the icons and soft keys use the same pixel count as any other winmo phone, it's just that the pixels are smaller on our phones...lol
im bumping this in case someone knows something now
It seems that any wallpaper with a gradient or any shading or glowing is displayed like in 8-bit style. What I mean by that is this.

Its really making alot of wallpapers look hideous and would like to know what I can do to make it look the way it should. Thanks in advance.
Seems like a little help and a little research does wonders these days.
Just so this can be used as a reference, i'm gonna go a little in dept here.

might try adding some noise to the pic. just a little bit. I used to have to do this on my touch pro 1+2 on some walls
let us know how they turn out
a quick google turned out this:Say Goodbye To Gradient Banding | Planet Photoshop
this looks promising too

These methods work in getting rid of the banding lines but what I figured out was to keep the quality, you need to do alot of tweaking and messing around. What I found out was adding a gaussian blur on a new layer thats slightly transparent and adding a little noise on a overlay layer thats slightly transparent is the trick.
This took me 2 mins to do. (Its 6:22am on fourth of July, I'll put up better examples later)
Before
After
What got me thinking was some of my camera pictures and other pictures in the gallery look stunning but anything I transfer via pc had horrible banding. Didnt make any sense at all. I'm no expert but adding a little blur and noise almost tricks the evo's screen.
great idea! thanks, now i can finally get some good wallpapers onto my evo.
How about sharing the exact settings you used? Or even better would be to post a PSD template that only requires people to paste their wallpaper (or possibly copy a layer style)
Download wallpaper set and save from the market. It fixes this problem.
I got a few wallpapers I like from Windows that I want to use to my 1 page homescreen on my android. However, it always makes me take a portion of the picture. Is there a way i can just use the entire picture since i use only 1 homescreen anyways? I use launcherpro plus.
You probably need to just resize the pic to whatever the stock resolution is, which I don't know and am trying to find out myself.
I had a similar issue in that most wallpapers for andriod that I DLed from various places seem to be too big for any version I've tried on my HD2, and the common ways to select wallpaper force you to crop out a smaller portion of the picture to use.
I assume this is due to resolution restrictions, but why is it so small on the HD2 builds when it has such a big screen? It's probably a simple fix, but I've just started using andriod & haven't had time to figure it all out.
yeah, but i don't know how to resize the picture because that means i would have to figure out what portion of the cropped size the box takes for the first screen, figure out the how to stretch my picture to contain only that portion, and then try to match it perfectly to fit the screen. I'm pretty sure that is definitely not the way to do it. haha man, this is frustrating. I'm also trying to figure out if HD2's android can be flashed with other roms so we can get modded apps, change our status bars, lockscreens, etc.. i know this is just the beginning but im too anticipated!
anyone please?
Have you tried the HDWall app? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503511
If I remember correctly, you can just edit & resize the image without having to create a .cab file for WinMo. Then, just move that image over to the phone and apply.
The thing is, i'm trying to get the wallpaper for android, not windows.
you need 960x800 wallpaper because of the way the wallpaper moves along each tab.
Just take your 480x800 wallpaper, and use photoshop (or paint.net or something) to expand the canvas to 960x800, leaving your original wallpaper in the middle.

pictures didnt work.
YES! got it. For anyone who is wondering how to do it, resize the picture to be 1440x800. after, make the selection box as wide as you can and center the picture as best as you can. you may have to experiment a few times because you can get a strip of white from the empty border if it is not 100% centered. Because of this, i make the box SLIGHTLY smaller then maximum size.
Alright, not to be annoying, but the quality goes down by a lot when i fix the images. can this be prevented?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/4965715657/ - how it looks with the canvas stretch.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/4965715529/in/photostream - how it's suppose to look. The box can't be stretched however, which was my original problem.
So I want to make a wallpaper that fits across three home screens and has a different color on each screen. Now the size of the screen is 480 x 800 but when I create a wallpaper that is 1440 x 800 the pictures don't fit on each screen correctly. Anyone got any suggestions/experience with this? Thanks.
For it to pan (the many) homescreens, resolution should be at 960x800.
Don't believe it? Google it.
What I normally do to get wallpapers to fit my phone is to use any photo or image editor, or, go online and use http://www.resize.it/ (select advance tools)
I'll give that a shot. Thanks for the fast and good response!
I think you'd be better off downloading Multipicture Live wallpaper as the wallpaper does not scroll as far as one homescreen.
doesnt it also depends on how many homescreens you use?
using the same wallpaper with 3 homescreens will look different when you scroll compared to if you have 5 homescreens.

I think the only way it'll look different is the "amount" of wallpaper that pans when you slide your finger across the home screens.
3 home screens would result in more pan of the wallpaper per homescreen, while 5 would result in less pan of the wallpaper per homescreen.
In terms of resolution depending on home screens, maybe others could work as well (I have never tried anything but 960x800), BUT remember, doesn't the wallpaper picker "crop" your chosen wallpaper at a certain ratio?
Because of that, you *could* experiment with different wallpaper resolutions, as long as it respects the ratio I suppose.
I would say it depends of so many parameters as :
the launcher you use
the grid you choose
the size of your wallpaper
the colors to split and fake screens
but nice piece of subject to study, i will continue to test as more possibilities as i can and will keep you informed

I'm looking for a good background on the screen, if I open the screen setup I see a square block instead of a rectangle block,
if i use a 1280x800 image is always cuts off a part of the image.
does someone know the resolution of the square box?
of does anyone have a link to a wallpaper pack for the Tab 10.1?
Greetz...
I been struggling with this same issue since day one. I too tried using the same Res wallpapers with the same issue lol. Soo I did some experimenting. For me what worked was a combination of two things. First off I use 1280x1024 wallpapers and I use quickpic to apply them. Here's some screenies to compare gallery and quickpic..

This image I'm sure ur familiar with. Nice n square and not cropped as we want it to be.
Here as you can see the crop toll within quickpic fits the rectangle horizontally quite perfectly and only cutting off the image at the top and the bottom. This is something that has become quite acceptable to me lol. Well I hope this helped

Wallpapers that fit
I too was having this problem. Even using Zedge would render blurry, non-fitting images. After some trial and error, I found PicSpeed wallpapers (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5zcnNkZXYud2FsbHBhcGVycyJd) and everything that I've loaded from there has been cropped and adjusted properly. I did find that I get my best results by picking the default settings, which is the one that allows the wallpaper to scroll. Not my app at all, but it solved this problem for me.
Good luck.
best solution till now for wallpapers i found
i use app in google play called wallpapers bay to get nice looking wallpapers with tablet resolutions and save them as download them then use app in google play called simple image wallpaper to set them i enter the app from from live wallpaper !!! and then find the name of installed app then enter it enter setting and browse image in gallery then set it sooo decent looking
