I have an N10 and have just bought an N7. I'd like to be able to sync or copy all the apps and the screen layout from one to the other.
Any ideas?
Thanks
If you're using a custom launcher (I use Apex Pro) they offer the ability to backup launcher settings and desktop data. From there you can copy the backup file from one device to the other. That'll take care of setting things up (you might still have to setup widgets though, not sure about that part). Regarding the apps, if you're rooted you can backup user apps and their data using Titanium Backup and then transfer those backup files from one device to the other. I'm sure there's a way to do it if you're not rooted, but I'm not award of it (perhaps someone else can chime in with that info)
I haven't tried this app yet, so I can't say whether it would do what you want, but it looked interesting so i downloaded it to try out at some point. DataSync:

There is a beta version too which might have some more features.

I'm using DataSync+ for a year now. It works awesomely! Use the beta though, it's better than the normal one.

with the rise in rooting and flashing to android devices to latest rom releases, I thought how handy would it be to have a program on my computer to arrange my apps/widgets without touching the device.
This would be great with a fresh device to get up and running, just how you like things.
Maybe even be able to save a layout or install apps from within the software?
a bit like itunes' application management where you can see all the pages and move, install or rearrange apps to your aesthetic pleasure.
Could such a program be created or is it too difficult?
not a good idea then?
I am no developer but i would definately like this kind of software for my pc. I have a ipod touch and i usually install the apps from the apps store from itunes 'cause it's a very comfortable way of surfing the market.
That said there is something thet might be what you're looking for; i havn't been able to use it much as i only istalled it yesterday but seems to work well:
it's called "app brain", and it's not a program you install on your pc but a webpage, you have to create an account and from the webpage you can put apps into your account (don't tknow if there are all the ones from the market, havn't investigated yet). Then (with the app istalled on your phone obviously) you just go into the app, sync your account and the apps in your account can be installed, deleted etc, etc and you don't even need to plug the phone into the pc (unlike my ipod touch).
So once you've set up your account it'll do the same as itunes app installer but without having to install anything on your pc and without having to plug your phone in (or even have your pc on by that matter!!!!)
Ps; not entirely sure bout this but i believe you can also use app brain to transfer photos and stuff to your desire!!
Thanks for the reply dude!
Sorry but I already use appbrain and although its very useful for keeping all your apps in one place, its not really the sort of thing I need.
It's more to do with controlling your device from your pc/mac. Ie. Moving widgets around, arranging apps, maybe even sending texts or changing backgrounds.
It's just an idea but I think it would be really useful, especially after wiping and flashing Roms!

know what you mean. coming from winmo i had all my apps, reg keys, mods, etc installed via a product called sashimi (think that's how you spell it!). After a flash id run the app on my phone and within about 10 minutes everything was done, the only thing left was to sync my data.

same here,
I'm coming from winmo and I'm very happy with sashimi: flashing a custom rom and configuring the device without touching it takes 10 minutes. afterwards everything is perfect configured.
I'll get my new android device within the next couple of days and so I need such a great piece of software like Sashimi.
is there something like sashime out there in the android/linux world?
Use adw launcher, it has option to backup your current desktop theme and settings.
Alternatively use either adw launcher or launcher pro together with titanium to backup the data held by these launchers. A titanium restore will give you back your setup.
Easy eh

Hell yeah, the best and most used option
Seems like a great time to start comparing.
Im very confused as to what exactly Google backs up now.
I tried it out yesterday and it seemed to backup my wifi , desktop , apps , and user dictionary.
Desktop icons and Alarms dont seem to have returned.
I havent tried MyBackup Pro but the new "with root" feature claims to re-install apps with market links. But does it keep per app preferences ?
Titanium does all of the apps/data/market in batch. But does not do "settings" ((if it did i recall having issues I forget which))
Just wondering if Googles backup/apps2sd is comprehensive enough that from now on flashing new ROMS or updates we'll no longer need to worry about backup reinstalls.
((Yes I know nandroid is best but for updates like this useless))
I don't think the full Google Backup demo'd at the I/O will be operational until www.android.com has re-launched with the new functionality.
Is there a list of what it currently backs up ?
I never really tires it extensively so not sure what it does/doesnt do.
The apps did work for me though.
Apps only, and only if you're unrooted I think.
Hey everyone! Recently migrated phones from a Touch Pro 2 to this (like a lot of you probably did) and have spent the last couple days trying to get used to the Android OS. So far I've managed to pretty much set up everything how I want and I've rooted, over clocked, and flashed a custom rom onto it (Virtuous v1.0.2).
Coming over from Windows Mobile though, one gripe I am having is being able to rename the apps in the app draw. Since I only have about 6 apps on the homescreen, I'm aware it is possible to rename them using programs such as bettercut or super app manager, but unfortunately I've not yet found a way to rename the apps in the app draw. I like things to be neat and labelled nicely which not only look better, but makes it easier to find things.
Is this any way possible to do once you're rooted up? Ideally I don't want to turn off the Sense UI interface and switch to something else because I quite like the Sense widgets. It's baffling why this option of renaming applications is not possible/much simpler.
Thanks in advanced for any help
Not looking good is it.. Lol
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Not sure if what you want is possible...
Sent from my T-Mobile G2
Of course its possible. Android is open source. Take the source for the launcher, make changes necessary to rename applications, compile, install.
Hint: Some other launchers that you may be able to download and install, even on a NON-ROOTED phone, may already have this ability.
Don't know if there is an easy way to do this in the stock Sense launcher.
Only way I know if you only want to do this to a few apps, and have the APK for those apps: There is an XDA user made app called APK Edit, which allows you to change the icon and name of the app. Just use this to edit the APK, then install the APK.

EVERY THING THAT IS NEEDED TO RUN AN ANDROID PHONE IN A SINGLE APP
This i basically started as an idea. but i have started working on it. Not a pro dev myself, so am calling all devs to help me out. Credits wil be given to all of those who contribute. Hoping for your support.
[IDEA] everyone here is testing a new rom almost everyday. new rom testing means, installing everything from scrap. In other words it a lot time consuming. so this app is mainly for those who want to test roms, and after flashing they just have to install one app. So they can run all from that.
[app functions]
i dnt knw exactly how much this can be done, but i am tryng to make it work. here are some of the things that it will contain-
1. launcher (themable, fast, without animation,LWP support)
2. messenging (themable, sms backup)
3. task manager
4. file manager (having zip file support)
5. app manager (having backup functions, app2sd move function)
6. terminal
7. flash light
8. gallary viewer
9. QR barcode scanner
10. dialler (including contacts, contact backup)
11. media player (includs both music, video)
some thing i hope to include but might not work-
1. wifi theter
2. busybox installer
3. filesystem explorer (with root)
4. sns
5. power manager
total app size~ not exceeding 25mb
more over this app has to hold some of the apps that are in the market but will be installed through this one. So the developers of the respective app has to be contacted for permissions.
i was hoping that this app to be released as a free app. but if developers come forewad to help me out, then every developers request will be counted.
hoping devs would come to help me.
Hmm..wow that's an interesting idea, I wish I could help (sorry only c# developer ) Now...some things which I thought about though, that might make something like this difficult is, first fitting everything you mentioned into 25mb (lol, that's veeeeerrrry small) Next if I understand correctly, you want to make this like an "All In One App" Basically within the app you can restore or load a launcher, messenger app, and all the other things. So one question, what would make this different than an one quick restore with titanium backup?

well first i was hoping that all this i would have to accumulate in or around 25mb.i have some of the things working and that was around 45mb.
this app will have all the stuff a normal person would need. this can be helpful when one does not have root. if i get everything working here then, i wd create two versions- one for normal use, an other for dev use(which would have many things)
So since I cant use TB right now. I am trying to use Helium to restore from my Galaxy S6 to my S8.
I already did smart switch to get the core around, but of course as expected it didnt do all my apps since some arent on play store. So now am trying to restore from my Helium backup, but many times it gets stuck on a restore for an app.
So just wondering, how else is everyone getting around all this? Thanks.
try again.
force stop the app on both devices and try again(make sure you do a sync, they're easier and more stable than backup-restore)
the backup process can be a bit unstable, some apps took several tries for me.
also good to know, running apps can't be transferred.
so kill any app you plan on transferring.
and smart switch does sideloaded and discontinued apps too if you use a cable to do the transfer.

Had the same problem. The next day, I tried restoring one at a time and it worked. Then, I was able to restore the rest as a batch. I can't explain it.

Smart Switch doesnt do the app data tho. So even with side loading, Id still be missing the data.
Now as for the sync. Are you doing to internal storage or google drive?
I did try restoring some apps one by one, and "says" complete, but never is. Doesnt even show it installed. So rather odd.
Just know right now. I am lil annoyed without root for a simple process to backup apps and data and restoring. Reminds me of when I do a clean windows install.... 3 days worth of setting up again vs 1 click of Titanium Backup restore. >.<
i used sync.
sync sends the backup straight to your new phone, and can only be triggered from your new phone.
you select your old phone from the restore screen, choose an app, and it will make a backup and sends it to your new phone, which then immediately installs it.
I can't get Helium to work on my S8+ at all. It says it restores apps and data, but the app is never installed. Tried one app at a time, everything. Helium worked fine going from my Note 4 to Note 7, then to my replacement Note 7, then from my Note 7 to my S7E. But from my S7E to my S8+ - it does not work. PITA and there are several apps I REALLY needed to migrate data.
did you try installing the app through the play store or smart switch first?
I didn't have any real issues, but I did go through smart switch first.
Anyone figure out the solution???? Please post

Would be nice if I knew how "sync" mode worked. All I get from the restore/sync list under my devices is "An error occured while retrieving your device list"
I can't get Helium to recognize that the S8 is in PTP mode. Even when it is, Helium states that the phone is in MTP mode. Anyone else experiencing this problem with Helium and their Galaxy S8 Plus?
Same issue with helium, it restores everything but then the apps simply aren't there.
I've tried everything to make Helium work - still says apps installed, but they never do. Surely there has to be an answer to this riddle.
Same here. No luck on data / settings being restored
Anyone have any updates or other solutions we can use? Helium devs never responded back to me.. so I feel like I just wasted 5$ on them.
Maybe time to give a one star rating for them on the playstore until they address the issue.

Is sync part of Smart Switch or Helium? Forgive me if question is obvious but since thread is about Helium, just wanted to make sure you are referring to a feature of SmartSwitch
Thanks
it's a feature in helium.
i don't know exactly how the devices find each other, but in my restore screen i can see my old phone as a source and if i select it i can choose from almost any app currently installed on my old phone and have it start a backup on the old phone that immediately restores on my S8.
it is far more reliable than backup to cloud for me.

Sync doesn't work for me. I have an error,
An error occurred while retrieving your device list. Getting this on both the new SO and the source phone.
Any secrets to getting the device to list? I am running the latest version of Helium.
Sync doesn't work with the S8. I do believe it was an option when I went from my Note 4 to my Note 7, then from my first Note 7 to my second Note 7, and also available from my second Note 7 to my S7E back in early February. But there is something not allowing sync between devices on Helium and the S8/S8+. So synicing isn't an option when the phones are not being "seen" as being available to sync. As others have said, there is an error message saying phones aren't available or something similar.
