with the rise in rooting and flashing to android devices to latest rom releases, I thought how handy would it be to have a program on my computer to arrange my apps/widgets without touching the device.
This would be great with a fresh device to get up and running, just how you like things.
Maybe even be able to save a layout or install apps from within the software?
a bit like itunes' application management where you can see all the pages and move, install or rearrange apps to your aesthetic pleasure.
Could such a program be created or is it too difficult?
not a good idea then?
I am no developer but i would definately like this kind of software for my pc. I have a ipod touch and i usually install the apps from the apps store from itunes 'cause it's a very comfortable way of surfing the market.
That said there is something thet might be what you're looking for; i havn't been able to use it much as i only istalled it yesterday but seems to work well:
it's called "app brain", and it's not a program you install on your pc but a webpage, you have to create an account and from the webpage you can put apps into your account (don't tknow if there are all the ones from the market, havn't investigated yet). Then (with the app istalled on your phone obviously) you just go into the app, sync your account and the apps in your account can be installed, deleted etc, etc and you don't even need to plug the phone into the pc (unlike my ipod touch).
So once you've set up your account it'll do the same as itunes app installer but without having to install anything on your pc and without having to plug your phone in (or even have your pc on by that matter!!!!)
Ps; not entirely sure bout this but i believe you can also use app brain to transfer photos and stuff to your desire!!
Thanks for the reply dude!
Sorry but I already use appbrain and although its very useful for keeping all your apps in one place, its not really the sort of thing I need.
It's more to do with controlling your device from your pc/mac. Ie. Moving widgets around, arranging apps, maybe even sending texts or changing backgrounds.
It's just an idea but I think it would be really useful, especially after wiping and flashing Roms!

know what you mean. coming from winmo i had all my apps, reg keys, mods, etc installed via a product called sashimi (think that's how you spell it!). After a flash id run the app on my phone and within about 10 minutes everything was done, the only thing left was to sync my data.

same here,
I'm coming from winmo and I'm very happy with sashimi: flashing a custom rom and configuring the device without touching it takes 10 minutes. afterwards everything is perfect configured.
I'll get my new android device within the next couple of days and so I need such a great piece of software like Sashimi.
is there something like sashime out there in the android/linux world?
Use adw launcher, it has option to backup your current desktop theme and settings.
Alternatively use either adw launcher or launcher pro together with titanium to backup the data held by these launchers. A titanium restore will give you back your setup.
Easy eh

okay so what rom shall i look into for a beginner?
Well, that depends on what you want from your device. Since you asked about WM5 I'm guessing you don't want to go with WM6. If I was flashing I'd personnally go with the newest ROM available. There's lots of choices, you just need to read up on each of them. Some are plain vanilla, others have a great deal of customization built in. You may need to try a few to see what works best for you. The main thing is to READ,READ,READ everything you can find about flashing ROM's if you haven't done it before.
Start here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285435
What you flash is really a personal choice. Are you unhappy with what you have now?
yea i am
it has alot of stuff that i dont want in it like the msn sign on etc etc, plus i know this phone can do alot more than what its currently being asked to do .
Since you say your just starting out I'd suggest you install you backup program of choice and spend some time dorking up your phone with all kinds of software. Some of it will work well, some won't. Some won't work at all and some won't play nice with each other. After you get comfortable killing and restoring your phone like its a casual occurrance you'll be ready for flashing. The main thing is you'll want to figure out what programs you really want to keep no matter what. You'll get to be a master of the hard reset. After about fifty of these you'll be glad you have everything you love saved and backed up to your storage card. Reinstalling a large number of your favorite programs and reregistering each and every one of them gets to be tedious after a while. Thats the beauty and ease behind the backup software. Back up alot. Then backup some more......
Just be aware that a backup will not restore a ROM, only reflashing will. You can generally get the stock ROM from the HTC website or various other linked sites.

so where would i find good software? to start playing with so to speak?
I thought we might take a poll, on which apps you would like have included and which should be left out.
im thinking that it needs a cleanup, so why not ask those that uses it.
tether and net
A tether to a winmo 6.5 with 3g. And.application to connect wan tablet to lan pc
I would get rid of everything that can easily be downloaded by the Market. Maybe even the Toshiba stuff if there are free downloadable apps that do the job too.
I think the best is, a standard android version with all the google app's.
Opera, file exploler, music/movie app's etc can easily be downloaded from the market.

no no.. only those downloadable from Market will be removed, but so far looks like they stay
those would normally be
Youtube , Gmail , Maps , Googlevoice , Twitter, facebook , streetview and such..
the GoogleApps framework services would still remain..
Adding FolioWidget will add a lot of pain for future updates
but glad to see this mod going this far
I don't need any toshiba apps, so they can go out.
For all the other things I'd like to see some basic apps included (FileManager, YouTube, FolioWidget).
Just make sure that these are not system apps and can be uninstalled/exchanged painless.
Titanium backup seems to be able to remove system apps, so maybe it is moot. I prefer not to have any apps installed which the market then wishes to update but can't (as currently DocsToGo showed before I un-installed). The only must-haves are things which can't be got from the market (unless they are packaged as a separate update, helping to keep the filesize down)
Titanium Backup
I think Titanium Backup _is_a_must_. Just think on a rom update with it preinstalled:
1. Do backup
2. Flash new rom
3. Do Restore
And everyone has his prefs, apps, etc., woking in a snap.
I think Titanium backup and a terminal emulator should be good ideas.
if you want to make everyone happy, you should include every single app in the market
but if you want a functional rom, stick with the basics.
as few system apps as possible, since it's easier to both remove and update them that way.
and just include apps with functionality that everyone needs. like a file explorer, the gApps naturally, flash and morelocale let the poll do it's thing and we'll see.
i personally think the folio stock apps are mere crap.
Thanks for your job Dexter...

I would include a nice MediaPlayer, TuneIn for Radio and a Backup Manager too.
Only the app's that 99% of the foliomod users use should be included.
That can be a browser, media player (stock), flash,..

EVERY THING THAT IS NEEDED TO RUN AN ANDROID PHONE IN A SINGLE APP
This i basically started as an idea. but i have started working on it. Not a pro dev myself, so am calling all devs to help me out. Credits wil be given to all of those who contribute. Hoping for your support.
[IDEA] everyone here is testing a new rom almost everyday. new rom testing means, installing everything from scrap. In other words it a lot time consuming. so this app is mainly for those who want to test roms, and after flashing they just have to install one app. So they can run all from that.
[app functions]
i dnt knw exactly how much this can be done, but i am tryng to make it work. here are some of the things that it will contain-
1. launcher (themable, fast, without animation,LWP support)
2. messenging (themable, sms backup)
3. task manager
4. file manager (having zip file support)
5. app manager (having backup functions, app2sd move function)
6. terminal
7. flash light
8. gallary viewer
9. QR barcode scanner
10. dialler (including contacts, contact backup)
11. media player (includs both music, video)
some thing i hope to include but might not work-
1. wifi theter
2. busybox installer
3. filesystem explorer (with root)
4. sns
5. power manager
total app size~ not exceeding 25mb
more over this app has to hold some of the apps that are in the market but will be installed through this one. So the developers of the respective app has to be contacted for permissions.
i was hoping that this app to be released as a free app. but if developers come forewad to help me out, then every developers request will be counted.
hoping devs would come to help me.
Hmm..wow that's an interesting idea, I wish I could help (sorry only c# developer ) Now...some things which I thought about though, that might make something like this difficult is, first fitting everything you mentioned into 25mb (lol, that's veeeeerrrry small) Next if I understand correctly, you want to make this like an "All In One App" Basically within the app you can restore or load a launcher, messenger app, and all the other things. So one question, what would make this different than an one quick restore with titanium backup?

well first i was hoping that all this i would have to accumulate in or around 25mb.i have some of the things working and that was around 45mb.
this app will have all the stuff a normal person would need. this can be helpful when one does not have root. if i get everything working here then, i wd create two versions- one for normal use, an other for dev use(which would have many things)
I am a GT7510 Noob who is gradually learning how useful this thing can be. After about a month, overcame my fears about bricking my new toy and rooted the Tab. Following the directions posted in this forum everything went very smoothly. After that, I installed Task's latest ROM. Then the fun began.
I have spent the last 25 years taking for granted that my computers and phones could only do what Microsoft or Apple thought they should do. With my Android Tab, I a quickly learning that this does not have to be the case. This post is intended to be a place where Galaxy Tab users can share the apps and other enhancements that become available after rooting the device. I will go first.
Titanium Backup
The first app in installed after rooting my Tab was Titanium Backup. This is a very powerful and useful app. It allowed me to do a complete backup of my stock setup so I could fearlessly go forward without fear that I might permanently brick my Tab. This is a must-have that only works on rooted devices.
Samba Filesharing
Next, I discovered Samba Filesharing, an app that allows the Tab's SD Card to be displayed and accessed as a wireless device on my Window's network. No more Kies, no more plugging the tab into a USB slot to transfer stuff back and forth. Brilliant!
Voodoo Control
I am not positive that the Tab has to be rooted for this app to work but I am glad I found it. Basically, this app allows the user to increase the volume of the feed from the headphone jack to levels much higher than the stock limits. I use this app when I have my Tab plugged in to my AV Receiver playing music from Pandora or my Google Music library. I am sure that it will come in handy elsewhere such as when trying to listen to a phone message in a noisy environment or when I get a seat next to the engine on an airplane.
Wizz Bar
This app creates a second pop-up menu tray that works independently of the stock Samsung tray. Unlike the stock pop-up tray, links to apps can be easily added or deleted any time. Wizz Bar keeps the apps that I use most often easily accessible from my home screen.
I am sure that that are dozens, maybe hundreds of extremely useful apps which can only be run from rooted devices. If you have a favorite or two, please post it here.
Bob
The nandroid backup function in cwm is very handy.
And voodoo screentune works wonders for the screencolor calibration.
Mostly for overclocking but also for flashing roms!
Automatic Clock Update
If you have a WiFi only tab adding the ClockSync app will keep your clock in sync with the rest of the world
My reasons are Samba Filesharing, Titanium Backup, Overclocking and last but not least Adfree Android. A phone without these apps seems quite useless to me.

First I wouldn't be thinking that titanium will prevent you bricking your device. Only a full nandroid in cwm is any good and even then there are still ways you could hard brick your tab. Also you don't need to root to flash cwm

Again rooting isn't needed to flash roms. Odin cwm and then flash the rom, most roms are pre rooted so no need to do it

Please explain this comment. Why am I not protected if I run a complete backup in Titanium? Why is a Nandroid backup better?
Bob
CWM Recovery
ROMs of course
Overclocking (and custom kernels)
SMB Share
UBUNTU!
and so on
The nandroid will do a whole backup of your os (including pgms, settings, sms...AND also kernel, radio) it's an image of your phone at one moment.
Titanium only does an apps' back up. With it u'll be able to restore your apps and its setings. U'll loose your firmware/kernel/radio and ur firmware settings..

Correct me if I am wrong but it appears that Titanium offers serveral backup options. I backed up all my apps and then did a backup of all the system files. Both are stored on my PC. Did I mess up?
No but as the guy above says. Titanium ONLY backs up apps and settings. If you bricked your device anything backed up in titanium is useless. Do you have cwm? If not find the thread on it and follow the sinple instructions. Then do a backup in cwm, only then will you be safe but like I said, even then there are still things that could hard brick it, just not that likely and really only if you were doing somthing really technical. Also if any guide on xda had a chance of causing hard brink they would warn you.
I have an N10 and have just bought an N7. I'd like to be able to sync or copy all the apps and the screen layout from one to the other.
Any ideas?
Thanks
If you're using a custom launcher (I use Apex Pro) they offer the ability to backup launcher settings and desktop data. From there you can copy the backup file from one device to the other. That'll take care of setting things up (you might still have to setup widgets though, not sure about that part). Regarding the apps, if you're rooted you can backup user apps and their data using Titanium Backup and then transfer those backup files from one device to the other. I'm sure there's a way to do it if you're not rooted, but I'm not award of it (perhaps someone else can chime in with that info)
