hi,
the Power Button on my defy+ will surely fail to work in the foreseeable future, so I will need a workaround to wake up the phone.
Is there an easy way to use a volume button (longpress maybe) as the power button?
Or is there a hardware guide to DIY repair the power button?
thx

Try this mod to use search button as power. Use ROM which has volume rocker wake so you can easily wake it from sleep, for the rest when it is on use search button. That mod works on any ROM once you change those two files and reboot.
Mod is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1887378

Because the initial function of hardware button is defined in our famous locked bootloader it's function can't be changed. If you search on youtube you've found a nice tutorial for disassemble. Is a hard work to replace the button but it can be done. More easy is to revive it with a couple of isopropilic alcohol drops.

My Moto defy Power button and volume button is no working for me .then i replace the Motorola Defy MB525 Middle Frame Board Bezel Housing.now my all buttons working like new .This the solution for the buttons replace .u cannot buy buttons only its not working properly ok .so buy Motorola Defy MB525 Middle Frame Board Bezel from the etradesupply .com .
+1 to use a rom with volume rocker switches to wake phone.
then use drop down toggles to off screen, power off or reboot the phone.
don't have to use power switch at all except to switch phone on from off state
example: wiui roms.

a simple observation led me to think that many button can be revived with this method: -power off the phone; put a drop of izopropilic alcohol on the button (with the device in vertical position) and action it repeatedly (10-15 times). You can repeat the beforementioned procedure. Blow on the button to dry it. Power on. Good luck!

i've never taken a defy apart before so i don't know the construction of the power button. but being water-resist i'm going to assume it has rubber insulation around it. so this cleaning method is most likely not going to work for this phone.
besides, it also depends on whether the button is worn/broken or just having poor contacst. if it's worn/broken, cleaning it is not going to help either.
so you probably have to dismantle the phone anyhow.

My fault I forgotten this minor aspect. Ya for Defy you MUST dismantle the phone and do the cleaning process from inside. And yes is applicable just in case the button is not broken phisically.

Well my button gets more and more stuck in the case. In tiny steps, but I feel by pressing it.

What is the actual part to buy to replace the semi-broken button? Don't tell me it's the board itself!
Any links on the button construction?

yes unfortunately.........its better bein safe than sorry lol.........i took mine apart around 2 months ago,due to abit of the same prob,my power button wouldn't work all the time or i had to press it down quite hard and i wanted to check my battery pins also. the hardest part is getting hold of the right size screwdriver to undo the phone lol............the rest is easy........if u do take it apart, whilst your there,it wouldn't do any harm to check the pins that connect to your battery, checkin they're not bent or dirty, cos that is why people have a battery drain lol and then they go to all these places to find solutions, task killers etc, when most of the time, the problem is right infront of them.........
HOPE THIS HELPS.............FEEL FREE TO HIT THANKS

My motorola defy side button and power button is not working ,i asked in motorola service center the guys tell it hard to get tat spare parts .i search e bay and other online site ,please guys help me to get tat defy spare parts buttons
Are you missing those buttons or are they just not working? 'cause if they are not working, you need to replace the motherboard, in order to get working buttons. Don't think it's worth it - better buy a new phone.

My Defy's volume up button stopped working some time ago. It was quite annoying as I used the volume buttons to unlock the phone. Some time later, I pressed the button really hard, and to my surprise is started working again. And like that I had my button back

It has nothing to do with the motherboard. There are soft silicon membranes in the cover for water resistance. These are wearing out after some time - always!
They can be replaced or you can make new ones by yourself. I did successfully.
After flooding mainly top of the phone, and cleaned in alcohol. Power button does not work Is it possible to exchange the key? Unauthorized GSM service can handle this?

Please ask all questions in Q&A. Thread moved there.
Hey guys.
Ive been having a lot of trouble with my power button. At first it became less responsive (Having to push the button 2-3 times to activate the screen).
Now it seems like it is not working at all (Having to push 6-7 times).
Anyone seen this problem before and knows of a way to fix it?
Or does anyone know a workaround? (Like using the search button to act like the power button perhaps?)
Thanks in advance.
I don't really have any suggestions on how to fix the power button itself, but I do have a few workarounds if you're interested
The first is Smart Screen ON. This app was featured on the main portal not too long ago, and I have to say, it works quite well. It uses the proximity sensor to turn the screen on and (optionally) off. In the span of two weeks, it's saved my phone over 2000 power button presses (the app keeps track). I have been running the app 24/7 since I installed it and have not noticed any impact on battery life. I'd say it's worth a try.
As an alternative, you may have some luck with ButtonRemapper (requires root). It should let you remap the search button like you had wanted. You could just edit the keyboard files directly, but this app makes it pretty simple. : )
Also, in case you didn't know, the home button will wake the phone by default, but it obviously doesn't turn the screen back off.

Thats what im trying to avoid.
What program did you use to remap the button?
Thanks for the info man!
Yeah it's a ***** how the phone only lasts a year before it starts breaking but glad i can get rid of it in 2 months.
I use ButtonRemapper, i take it you have root access so just download the .APK i have attached and its pretty simple just find the search key in the app and change it so it acts like the power button (It's simply you will get it when you open the app). Once you have done that the phone works fine when in normal use you just gotta tap the search button not the power button.
But as my power button is fully broken im not sure if the power button works if the phone turns off. So my work around is plug the charger in then when you see the sony logo keep taping the volume down until you launch in CWM and then just tap reboot now and it will boot up, hope this helps.
It's the only work around without having to spend money i could think off, so defiantly a good temp fix.
Yeah i think the build quality of this device isnt what it could've been. Although im happy the screen hasnt broken yet.
Thanks for the APK!

Yeah im doing that and using the search button to sleep the screen.
This way i hope it wont die on me for another year
So my phone overheated (my fault) and the power button is broken, as well as the hardware keyboard. (Functional but inaccurate most the time) I can reboot my phone by pulling the battery, but don't know how to reach the power options menu that used to be reached via the power button. Its been like this for some time now, but yesterday, I pulled my phone from my pocket and saw the power options menu on the screen. (Reboot, Shut Off, Recovery, Bootloader)
Thing is, I have NO idea how that happened. Since I cant turn the screen off manually, things get inadvertently "pushed" when I put it in my pocket before screen times itself out. So obviously there is a way to reach the power menu without the power button working. Anyone here have any idea how to do that? I would greatly appreciate any help!
well your power button must sometimes work, pulling the battery will of course turn it off but you would need to press the power button to turn it on
probably just sticky, open it up and use some electric parts cleaner or rubbing alcohol to clen up he button, fully dry it and then see if it works better

No, power button absolutely does not work. Its been fried for about 2 months now. I already tried all the tricks. Pulling the battery (for some reason) is how I reboot the phone. I can't really turn it "off" aside from leaving the battery out. As soon as I put it back in, the phone automatically turns on. This may be a fail safe measure in case the power button does break, as in my case. I'm just thinking there must be some way to reach that power menu other than power button.
well it isn't a fail safe, its just what happens when the power button is stuck on, the plastic button you touch is part of the case, this makes contact with the actual power button which is part of the motherboard.
from what you descriped you power button is stuck, but do as you please

I see what you are saying. If that is the case, not sure I have the tools or know-how to actually open my phone up. I just tried the tricks like burying it in dry rice to try and soak up moisture and whatnot. Due for a new phone in a few months anyway, just was curious if there is some shortcut via software that I'm not aware of.
if your phone is rooted there are apps that can creat shortcut icons on your screen to do most any key press. just search the market.
don't know of any rom with a built in feature like this so I'm sure the power button just became unstuck for a moment and then restuck

There's an app that is filled Buttonremapper, on xda here. Search it through Google. It lets you remap a key to any action you want
Hello guys I am asking for help since when I drop my phone accidentally the power button actually broke as it doesn't work at all and I put it in a bag of rice so the rice sucks all the water and the power button is completely dead, it sometimes work tbh then stops responding again. Now here is my question. How can I fix this without shipping my phone to Samsung or Pay a few dollars to get this fixed?

Mmmm use the home button to wake up the phone and install an app to lock the screen and to restart the device if needed
Try different waking methods, double tap or volume buttons or the home key.. And locking, prefer locking apps or gestures.. But I would suggest, get the power button replaced, Bcoz you ll get locked out, when battery runs out or phn turns off!

Good advice to get the power button fixed. There *will* come a time when you need it.

Good thing is that when the phone is completely charge but the power button is not responding all I do is hold the down volume + Home button then use my charger to boot it up then press down volume again.
At the end of the day the choice is yours as to whether to get the button sorted or not. You *seem* to be ignoring the sound advice that everyone has told you. Again, that's your choice....In the same way as it'll be our choice to ignore your requests for help when you inevitably create a post with the title....

Good luck with that one fella.
