Google Play Store Nexus 4 vs. T-Mobile Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm on a T-mobile contract (6 months in out of 2 years) and I asked t-mobile what the price would be if i would upgrade my phone to the nexus 4, and they said full price. I think they said 400 something dollars, which is too much for me. Can I just buy the phone for $350 from google and unlock it to T-mobile and just put my SIM in it?

Yes...I have T-Mobile. I originally had the Galaxy Nexus. When the I got my Nexus 4 from Google, I went to the T-Mobile store and got a micro sim card (they didn't charge me for it) and put it in the N4 and it works like a champ.

the one from google play is the same one sold through tmobile. There is no difference between the two. It is already an unlocked device. All T-mobile is doing is selling the phone. They did not touch the device in any way.

and it's $500 + tax from tmobile, if you have an existing contract.

So it was free to unlock the nexus 4 to t-mobile? were you on a contract?

You don't have to unlock it if you buy it from Google.

Yes. I'm on T-Mobile and I bought my N4 on eBay since it was sold out on Play and I didn't want to pay T-Mo's ripoff price. My old phone had a full size SIM card, so I went to T-Mobile's prepaid site and bought a micro SIM for one dollar. It arrived in the mail the day before my N4 did. I put the SIM in, activated it online, and I was good to go. T-Mobile doesn't care whether or not you bought the phone from them--it will work either way. (I mean, I'm sure they'd rather you buy it from them, but they won't penalize you if you don't.)
The best part was never having to speak to T-Mo's awful customer service.

WTF?? Yeah the phone is amazing, but no way in heck would i pay that much.

Yeah I had to watch prices for a few days before I found one for 450+free ship. The prices dipped a bit after T-Mo announced that they'd be getting more stock, so I took the opportunity and pounced. Big markup compared to the Play price, but who knows when Play will be back in stock and I wanted my phone asap. It was worth it

Unlocking from contract/carrier
If I get a T-Mobile Nexus 4 , will I be able to use it in India ?!!
As in someone mentioned no need to unlock fm the carrier !
So I just put a micro sim of some other Indian Mobile network , it will work ?!!

The two N4's are the same exact device. They both come unlocked so yes, you could just stick your SIM in it and it'll work right away.

To make it simple, it will work with ANY GSM carrier in the WORLD! NO need to unlock or do anything special, buy it and stick your MicroSIM card in (or cut down a MiniSIM to Micro size).
There, that should clear it up.....
PS - I swear someone will ask if it can work with Verizon soon, i know it!

If I'm not mistaken LTE was disabled in ALL Nexus 4's that have had the 4.2.2 update. Google and LG never got FCC clearance to use LTE on the Nexus 4.

That is correct, although if you are on 4.2.1 the LTE would still work albeit only on Canadian networks and T-Mobile (in its small tiny 4G footprint).

So there is ZERO difference in hardware of any kind?? I was just on Live Chat with T-Mobile and all they said was this:
We don't have any other explanation except that the phone is designed to work perfectly with T-Mobile network. This is not only happening with T-Mobile though. All other carrier's phone are quite higher than those purchased directly from the manufacturer.

He wasn't able to tell me what the hardware differences are (if any). I guess I'll go to Google Play and get mine that way. If it had wifi calling, that would be one thing, but it doesn't yet.

I'm on Vodafone contract. I just went to the website and chatted to the support guy over the vodafone instant messaging thingy and asked for a microsim. They sent it and I can just activate any time I want online and it will magically move my phone number onto it.
They should give you a microsim if you ask, after all it costs them maybe 10pence to keep a customer happy.

[Q] Am I missing something? Why buy Nexus 4 from anywhere other than Google?

Nexus 4 16GB is about $250 from Google Play. Everywhere else without a contract it is more than $300? Am I missing something? Does the one bought from Google Play work at all the major carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and the small places like MetroPCS, etc?)
The price drop is recent and T-Mobile at least was trying to gain capital by over pricing the phone. The Play Store version is the exact same as the T-Mobile minus some coding that makes it be seen as a T-Mobile device. It is already unlocked. The one I have was bought from a guy that got it from a store. It works with any SIM I put in. By yours from the Play Store, don't get ripped off!

There is zero difference between the T-Mobile Nexus 4 and Play Store Nexus 4. The software and hardware is exactly the same.
Yup just got one from the Google website Cut down the SIM card, put it in and everything work.
Tmobile still want about $435 fire one.
☞Sent from here☜
Also until the price drop it wasn't that much more. $350 vs $428. That's a $78 difference. Or $3.25 a month to make 24 monthly payments on it instead of buying it out right.
Go to any rent to own store and you're paying almost 2x retail.
Now at $250 you would be silly to buy it from T-Mobile. Expect a price change soon, especially when the N5 comes close to launch.

The phone you are using doesn't matter. There were a large batch of sims a long time ago that had trouble activating with that plan online (and you are suppose to only be able to activate the plan online). But generally it is not an issue. Worst case is you have to spend time on the phone with T-Mobile CSR. Just make sure you get a SIM activation kit, not just a "SIM".

Bought a Verizon PrePaid Moto G Today...

So let me tell you how this went down...
First, I go to a local Best Buy Mobile store to check out the Moto G for my girlfriend. They tell me they can't sell me one in the store until Jan. 9th, but if I purchase one online and choose to pickup in the store, I could get one. So I stand in the store, buy the phone on my GS4, and pick it up at the counter. Weird process, but whatever.
So I bought the phone. The lady at the register assured me that I would be able to use this on her line (which is a contract line). Go to activate it, and find out that it can't be done until the 9th. That's cool, no problem. Once I get home, I find out that the phone will only work on a prepaid line and BestBuy did not inform me of this. I go back up to the store to return it, but they won't take it back because it's opened. Oh, I forgot to mention, the lady at the damn counter was the one who opened it!
So, is there ANY way that I could get this to activate on a contract line without having it activated on a prepaid line for 6 months, or am I screwed? If not, is there a good way to bypass the activation and use it solely as a wifi "tablet" (for my girlfriend's kid)?
If I actually am screwed, anyone want this thing for $80 shipped in the continental US?
That's a lie about it being opened. I have returned prepaid phone there on several occasions. There is something either shady about your story or the person working but something isn't adding up here.

Cool story, brah. Nonetheless, I guess you missed the fact that he bought this for his girlfriend who is under contract with Verizon which is a CDMA carrier. You can't buy a GSM phone and use it on a CDMA carrier. The only time one would need a SIM card slot is if you're using it on Sprint or Verizon's LTE network and since this phone doesn't have LTE....
Thanks for the responses guys! I'll try the unlock method later tonight when I have the phone in hand again (girlfriend still has it at the moment).
As for the return policy, I agree with y'all. I probably should be able to take it back, but the lady at the counter seemed like she might have been new or something. I actually tried to take it back about 4 hours later, so way within the 14 day window mentioned earlier.
On a side note, I won't be using the phone either way as I just went ahead and bought a like-new GS3 from a friend that she is going to use (wish I would have known he was selling it PRIOR to all this). If I can use it as a tablet, I'll just let her kid have it, but if not, I'll try and take it back again.
Will keep everyone posted!

Correct. After being told they didn't have any at my local store I was happy to inform them that they had 8 of them in stock which was very easy to find out online, and a little arguing about whether or not they could sell it yet, as well as a call to their Verizon rep, I finally was able to procure a Moto G without activating it. Hoping to find out this will work immediately with PagePlus.
Good news everyone, I was able to bypass the activation screen and unlock the phone for "tablet" use (using the methods mentioned in this thread). After playing with the phone for a little while, I gotta say, I actually like the thing! While we won't be using this as a phone, I will probably keep it to use as a MP3 player for the house.
I played around with the features a little and the only real disappointment that I saw was the camera. Maybe I'm use to the 13MP on the GS4, but the picture quality just didn't seem very good. Better than my girlfriend's old iPhone 4, but lacking nonetheless.

Let me know how that works out. I tried and the pageplus rep said that the phone was unable to work, and it needed to be 'unlocked.' I wonder if I just got someone who didn't know what to do.
I returned my Verizon prepaid moto g today to BB. I did not have any issues. They did check to see if it had been activated. They turned the phone on and seeing the activate wizard appear turned it off. They only thing I didn't get back was the $0.70 for a 911 fee.

as of this moment, onlty att locks the sim. people are speculating if verizon will also do this, but its only att at the moment.
Another nod for Sprint being unlocked. I just put my N6 that I got 2 days after it hit the Sprint shelf on Tmobile and it rings for incoming calls again. Sprint has network issues and I got tired of missing calls and having cust service always start out with "factory reset your phone." My note 3 had the same issue on Sprint. 15 mins for Tmob to setup the account and put the sim in. 0$ and a better plan price to boot.

my experience with Verizon's version of the Galaxy Nexus left a bad taste in my mouth. I will be very very hard pressed to ever buy a verizon branded phone ever again. they do get my money though. That I don't mind paying for because I have signal everywhere I go and the legacy unlimited data plan.
The carrier locks aren't really a big deal in any case. $20 and you can get it unlocked at any number of cell unlocking sites.
Would rather it not be locked at all, but isn't that big of a deal....

Probably the paying part to need to unlock it.
As of today, if you are not under contract with the carrier that the phone is locked to, or owe them money due to an EIP, they have to unlock the phone.

The nexus was never locked to begin with unless you had a contract through AT&T, all other versions are unlocked from factory

I'm not sure you read my post correctly, as that's what my post pertained to. Contracts, EIP, or if they bought the phone outright from AT&T etc.

it's still wrong information, mine is with a contract through sprint, it's still fully unlocked, I can put any sim in and I'm good to go, t-mobile was the same way, at&t was the only one that did a lock and we still have yet to find out about verizon
HELP
im looking to purchase an AT&T Nexus 6 from clist TODAY to use on Sprint. I got a sprint nano sim and was wondering if i can activate it. I heard you give sprint the IMEI number without the last digit or something. Has anyone done this? Anything i should know? im searching and googling and havent gotten a solid answer before i drive an hour to meet this guy. thanks in advance

AT&T are the only ones that are carrier locked, unless it was purchased outright or paid off, I would really double check with whoever you're buying it from and have them meet you at a sprint store to actually check everything out before you commit

Best Buy Unlocked Nexus 6

Hey everyone,
I know there was some confusion to this question only because I could not find any straight answers myself. But I can assure you that an unlocked nexus 6 from best buy will activate on Sprints Network without any issues.
Only thing I had to do was go to my local sprint store and ask for a nano Sim card. Took it home and placed it in my nexus 6. Went online to activate phone. Punched in the IMIE number leaving off the last digit and entered in the Sim number. Worked like a charm!

+1 for me also piece of cake getting it activated in store also
there's no confusion actually, everyone knows that all US bought n6 are exactly the same, and that putting a sprint sim in it will make it work on sprint. if you want to, you can put a tmobile or att or Verizon sim in it to make it work on those providers.

Well, if you go to the best buy website. They even say that the phone doesn't work on CDMA phones such as sprint and Verizon. I also found a lot of sites that said the same thing.

Bestbuy never updates their website, it's wrong....
90% of the time, and the sites you're seeing this on are wrong...just wrong, just listen to Google and knowledgeable forum members about how the phone works and no one else

I guess my play store n6 has been lying to me since winter every time its worked on Verizon... Long before Verizon even carried it. Works on every carrier. Granted...vzw put it on the lost stolen blacklist when I was swapping between vzw and a prepaid at&t card at work..but they fixed it.
Technically the best buy website is correct. You can't buy an unlocked nexus 6 from best buy and simply activate it on Verizon like you would a normal Verizon branded phone. However the Nexus 6 itself IS capable of running on a CDMA network and will work on Verizon and Sprint. The trick is that you already needed to have an active line on Verizon, then its just a simple matter of putting the active nano sim into your nexus 6..

The nexus 6 is unlocked, you CAN simply buy it and activate it on Verizon like you would any other Verizon phone, please, look around the forums before telling them wrong info. If I really wanted to i could take my Nexus 6, originally purchased at Bestbuy for "sprint" and go to any carrier I please without having to jump through any hoops. Verizon will activate it and it'll show up as a "non Verizon" nexus 6 on the account or I can just grab any GSM carrier sim and go to town.

The AT&T version is the only one sim locked out of the big 4. Rogers in Canada is locked too, I believe.

Umm, you understand that only Verizon Nexus 6's can activated normally. That's why they sell Verizon "branded" nexus 6's. Again I said the nexus 6 purchased from Besy Buy will work, But walk into a Verizon store with a non Verizon branded phones and you will have to jump thorough some hoops to get it activated. Unless something has changed recently that is.
I went to a best buy to buy one. It said they had it in stock online. I called and got a recording saying check online for stock information. This Best buy is an hour drive, so I waited until I could actually talk to a person at the store. Asked them to verify they had it in stock. The guy says yep we have it.
I drive an hour, stand there for 20 minutes while the guy that told me he has it tries to find it. Apparently he never actually looked. He then proceeds to tell me that they have been having issues with the Nexus 6 stock in their system.
Yep, I was pissed.

There is no "Verizon" nexus 6, just the nexus 6, the only thing Verizon about it is the sim card. It's already been talked about in the Verizon fcc thread made a while back. The nexus 6 is the only special case phone that you don't have to do anything special because Google made it so carriers accept them. Verizon just likes to mess everything up, but obviously the people weren't having it.

I am hoping to get a best-buy nexus 6 and use it on VZW... the only problem is, the drones at the Corporate store tell me they won't activate a nano sim for me on one of their phones. The issue for me is I have a galaxy nexus with a micro sim.... soooooo... does anyone know I can activate it this way:
1) I get a nano to micro adapter and put a new vzw nano sim in it...
2) put the nano+micro adapter in to my GNex....
3) have them activate the sim via my gnex and then take the nano and put it into the n6
Is there anything that would prevent this from working??
Just cut the some down to nano size. Just what u did with my cricket Sim.
When I got my dev edition moto x, I took the nano sim to a vzw store and said I need a sim activated. They asked if I had the phone motioning to take it... I just said I do have a phone, but I don't need any help with it, I simply need the some card activated to my account. They had no problems. Just don't be sketchy or an asshole. You can have just a sim activated.
At least in the past if you have an extra line you can do it over the phone too, you just give them account Info and the code from your new sim and they activate it for you.
Though I guess if you own a nexus 6 and are coming to verizon? I doubt they are sending you to a competitor if you state you have a phone and simply want a sim.
