[Q] Am I missing something? Why buy Nexus 4 from anywhere other than Google? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Nexus 4 16GB is about $250 from Google Play. Everywhere else without a contract it is more than $300? Am I missing something? Does the one bought from Google Play work at all the major carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and the small places like MetroPCS, etc?)

The price drop is recent and T-Mobile at least was trying to gain capital by over pricing the phone. The Play Store version is the exact same as the T-Mobile minus some coding that makes it be seen as a T-Mobile device. It is already unlocked. The one I have was bought from a guy that got it from a store. It works with any SIM I put in. By yours from the Play Store, don't get ripped off!

There is zero difference between the T-Mobile Nexus 4 and Play Store Nexus 4. The software and hardware is exactly the same.

Yup just got one from the Google website Cut down the SIM card, put it in and everything work.
Tmobile still want about $435 fire one.
☞Sent from here☜

Also until the price drop it wasn't that much more. $350 vs $428. That's a $78 difference. Or $3.25 a month to make 24 monthly payments on it instead of buying it out right.
Go to any rent to own store and you're paying almost 2x retail.
Now at $250 you would be silly to buy it from T-Mobile. Expect a price change soon, especially when the N5 comes close to launch.

Why would you cut the sim card when the micro sim is free at tmobile...? Just stop by and pick up the new one, then activate it online.. That's what I did.

Thank you for all the replies. I'm going to get two of the Nexus 4 and the $30 pre-paid deal with T-Mobile. Some folks said they had trouble activating a Nexus 4 with that deal. Anyone had similar issues?

The phone you are using doesn't matter. There were a large batch of sims a long time ago that had trouble activating with that plan online (and you are suppose to only be able to activate the plan online). But generally it is not an issue. Worst case is you have to spend time on the phone with T-Mobile CSR. Just make sure you get a SIM activation kit, not just a "SIM".

Can I use an actual T-Mobile Sim on Straight Talk?

Please forgive the dumb question but I haven't had a phone with a Sim in years.
After botching a cut job with the straight talk sim to get it to fit, I went and got a micro sim straight from a tmo store.
**Can I call ST and have them activate this Sim on the ST network? Or is there actually something special about the ST Sim?**
I already have all the APN info for ST on the phone since the botched card still kinda functions. The tmo Sim is not linked to any account; They just pulled it out of a drawer and sold it to me.
No, need a ST SIM.

Damn. OK, thanks!
Can you explain why not? What makes the difference between a Tmobile compatible ST sim and an actual Tmobile sim that can't be overcome with software mods?
Well for one, no one mods the way a sim interacts with the phone.. Also Straight Talk sims supposedly get lower tower priority.

Hmm. Fair enough.
As for the software mods, I guess I was referring more to setting up the access point info. Clearly I don't have much background with sim stuff, so I appreciate the info.
Nah, you can't mod the SIMs or anything. That's outside the scope of most people's technical ability.

Might also want to get a microSIM cutter on Amazon it's like 3.90 with PRIME shipping.

One main reason you can not use anything other than an actual ST SIM, is that your account is based on it's serial number.
Normally ST accounts are based on the serial number of the ST Phone, but since this is BYOD, they use the SIM instead.
You can try to open a ticket on ST facebook and convince the reps your SIM is faulty so they send you a replacement. Else you're gonna have to buy another one.
Hope that helps,

Google Play Store Nexus 4 vs. T-Mobile Nexus 4

Hi, I'm on a T-mobile contract (6 months in out of 2 years) and I asked t-mobile what the price would be if i would upgrade my phone to the nexus 4, and they said full price. I think they said 400 something dollars, which is too much for me. Can I just buy the phone for $350 from google and unlock it to T-mobile and just put my SIM in it?
Yes...I have T-Mobile. I originally had the Galaxy Nexus. When the I got my Nexus 4 from Google, I went to the T-Mobile store and got a micro sim card (they didn't charge me for it) and put it in the N4 and it works like a champ.

the one from google play is the same one sold through tmobile. There is no difference between the two. It is already an unlocked device. All T-mobile is doing is selling the phone. They did not touch the device in any way.
and it's $500 + tax from tmobile, if you have an existing contract.

Yes. I'm on T-Mobile and I bought my N4 on eBay since it was sold out on Play and I didn't want to pay T-Mo's ripoff price. My old phone had a full size SIM card, so I went to T-Mobile's prepaid site and bought a micro SIM for one dollar. It arrived in the mail the day before my N4 did. I put the SIM in, activated it online, and I was good to go. T-Mobile doesn't care whether or not you bought the phone from them--it will work either way. (I mean, I'm sure they'd rather you buy it from them, but they won't penalize you if you don't.)
The best part was never having to speak to T-Mo's awful customer service.

Yeah I had to watch prices for a few days before I found one for 450+free ship. The prices dipped a bit after T-Mo announced that they'd be getting more stock, so I took the opportunity and pounced. Big markup compared to the Play price, but who knows when Play will be back in stock and I wanted my phone asap. It was worth it

The two N4's are the same exact device. They both come unlocked so yes, you could just stick your SIM in it and it'll work right away.

To make it simple, it will work with ANY GSM carrier in the WORLD! NO need to unlock or do anything special, buy it and stick your MicroSIM card in (or cut down a MiniSIM to Micro size).
There, that should clear it up.....
PS - I swear someone will ask if it can work with Verizon soon, i know it!

If I'm not mistaken LTE was disabled in ALL Nexus 4's that have had the 4.2.2 update. Google and LG never got FCC clearance to use LTE on the Nexus 4.

So there is ZERO difference in hardware of any kind?? I was just on Live Chat with T-Mobile and all they said was this:
We don't have any other explanation except that the phone is designed to work perfectly with T-Mobile network. This is not only happening with T-Mobile though. All other carrier's phone are quite higher than those purchased directly from the manufacturer.

Is a sim card tied specifically with the phone it comes with?

Say you have two new sprint phones, one white, one black, both s4s. The black one, the card was missing. The white one, the card is there. Could the card from the white one have been put in the black one, activated and on the network, and it work? Is the sim only able to work with the phone it came with, even though you have two of the same model? I asked someone at a sprint store if they charge for a replacement sim and they said no but they don't have any for this phone. They said I'd have to go somewhere else. Too many conflicting stories.
You can use the sim if it is activated yes. I know online when I transferred phones it gave me the option to use the sim I had or the one that came with the new phone.
Yes you can. It costs $50 to replace the sim card..

The thing that makes me so mad about that "option" is it's probably 99.9% profit for sprint for the cost of the card. I would refuse to pay for a card if the phone I bought and wanted didn't come with one new out of the box.

I would give some push back on that...sim cards ring at $0 at pos....curious if they are also selling batteries thinking they are padding their acc sales.
Regardless...I will research it
I will also add that I see a number of situations where the sim IS tied to a phone and a number of them where it is tied to the account. For the most part the sim stays with the account UNLESS the new phone has a sim.
Confusing I know. I think Sprint is still trying to figure out the right way to handle the sim/esn set up.

Yeah, it's not like swapping Sims on gsm.
A big problem is the answer you get differs with who you ask. Sounds like training employees isn't universal with some things. One store can say no and not help with a problem. Go to another store, you might be able to get your situation taken care of.

Unless you already have a nanosim or a nanosim adapter, chances are you will need one with this phone. One comes with every order regardless. You don't get charged more for it either (I know I didn't when I ordered my G3). If you don't need it, just leave it in the box and don't use it.

You can cut an original SIM down to nanosim size. I did it when I had the Xperia Z3 and it worked fine. FYI, I had to sand it down pretty well on the sides so it would fit the nanosim tray. Just be careful not to cut the chip!
Does it say the monthly plan is not an option because it's not been released? Says it on the nexus 5 too.

Monthly will be 28/30 dollars a month with your bill for 24 months. Zero down payment (aside from tax, also depending on credit rating).
Honestly I have no problem with the Midnight Blue model since it was what I was gunning for. That said I am still contemplating if I should attempt to get the 64GB option from the website (which might sell out as fast as Google Play did) or pull a "Black Friday" and camp in front of my local T-Mobile over night to be the first in line for the release despite only being able to get the 32GB model.
I never had too many issues with storage with my Nexus 4 16GB, never stored music on it aside from ones I would make into ringtones and when it came to ROM/Titanium backups I would eventually offload them to my computer/server if I had too many on my device. Would a 32GB model (which will likely be about 24GB's) be more than enough for someone like me?
This must be an old rendering of the Nexus 6? The metal bezel appears silver in color on the "Midnight blue" model as opposed to being blue anodized.
Id much prefer this set up.

Best Buy Unlocked Nexus 6

Hey everyone,
I know there was some confusion to this question only because I could not find any straight answers myself. But I can assure you that an unlocked nexus 6 from best buy will activate on Sprints Network without any issues.
Only thing I had to do was go to my local sprint store and ask for a nano Sim card. Took it home and placed it in my nexus 6. Went online to activate phone. Punched in the IMIE number leaving off the last digit and entered in the Sim number. Worked like a charm!

Technically the best buy website is correct. You can't buy an unlocked nexus 6 from best buy and simply activate it on Verizon like you would a normal Verizon branded phone. However the Nexus 6 itself IS capable of running on a CDMA network and will work on Verizon and Sprint. The trick is that you already needed to have an active line on Verizon, then its just a simple matter of putting the active nano sim into your nexus 6..

The nexus 6 is unlocked, you CAN simply buy it and activate it on Verizon like you would any other Verizon phone, please, look around the forums before telling them wrong info. If I really wanted to i could take my Nexus 6, originally purchased at Bestbuy for "sprint" and go to any carrier I please without having to jump through any hoops. Verizon will activate it and it'll show up as a "non Verizon" nexus 6 on the account or I can just grab any GSM carrier sim and go to town.

Umm, you understand that only Verizon Nexus 6's can activated normally. That's why they sell Verizon "branded" nexus 6's. Again I said the nexus 6 purchased from Besy Buy will work, But walk into a Verizon store with a non Verizon branded phones and you will have to jump thorough some hoops to get it activated. Unless something has changed recently that is.
I went to a best buy to buy one. It said they had it in stock online. I called and got a recording saying check online for stock information. This Best buy is an hour drive, so I waited until I could actually talk to a person at the store. Asked them to verify they had it in stock. The guy says yep we have it.
I drive an hour, stand there for 20 minutes while the guy that told me he has it tries to find it. Apparently he never actually looked. He then proceeds to tell me that they have been having issues with the Nexus 6 stock in their system.
Yep, I was pissed.

There is no "Verizon" nexus 6, just the nexus 6, the only thing Verizon about it is the sim card. It's already been talked about in the Verizon fcc thread made a while back. The nexus 6 is the only special case phone that you don't have to do anything special because Google made it so carriers accept them. Verizon just likes to mess everything up, but obviously the people weren't having it.

Similar situation when I got mine, was an hour away and I called them because it showed in stock online order only, and I had them on the phone as I placed the order

I am hoping to get a best-buy nexus 6 and use it on VZW... the only problem is, the drones at the Corporate store tell me they won't activate a nano sim for me on one of their phones. The issue for me is I have a galaxy nexus with a micro sim.... soooooo... does anyone know I can activate it this way:
1) I get a nano to micro adapter and put a new vzw nano sim in it...
2) put the nano+micro adapter in to my GNex....
3) have them activate the sim via my gnex and then take the nano and put it into the n6
Is there anything that would prevent this from working??
Just cut the some down to nano size. Just what u did with my cricket Sim.
When I got my dev edition moto x, I took the nano sim to a vzw store and said I need a sim activated. They asked if I had the phone motioning to take it... I just said I do have a phone, but I don't need any help with it, I simply need the some card activated to my account. They had no problems. Just don't be sketchy or an asshole. You can have just a sim activated.
At least in the past if you have an extra line you can do it over the phone too, you just give them account Info and the code from your new sim and they activate it for you.
Though I guess if you own a nexus 6 and are coming to verizon? I doubt they are sending you to a competitor if you state you have a phone and simply want a sim.
