Kernel Panic & No Wifi connect - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
my device is sometime unexpectedly rebooting, this happens like once every month, so it's not very often. Still it's annoying me. So after it reboots, it wants to send me an email with a bugreport. I looked at it but it doesn't say much to me. Hopefully someone can help me with this?
I also have a bigger issue with my home wifi, I can't connect to it with my Nexus, mobile phone is working fine though. I think the corresponding line here is: "wpa_supplicant: wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-ASSOC-REJECT". This is really a problem because the tablet is kinda useless to me without network connectivity at all. I've worked around by setting up another Acess Point with openWRT, acting as client bridge to the main wifi network. The Device is Nexus 7 8GB with Android 4.2 if it helps. Sorry for my bad english & thanks in advance.
regards Tou

rebooting around once a month?
first how can you notice that,
second its normal... yes... no device is perfect...
with your Wifi, i had the same problem, but with my PC,
i cant connect at all!
its in the WIfi Settings,
Tweak with your router settings, restart the router first before all...

If you're using 4.2 or 4.2.1, the reboot is a known issue on Google's end, and I'd consider myself lucky to only have it once a month.
If rooted, you can delete bugmailer.sh from system/bin to stop the bug reports.

[Q] Wifi stalls [Solved]

Pardon me if this is a repeat, but I've searched and found nothing.
I'm on Moto Defy/MB525, rooted, overclocked, CM7.
My issue is this....Wifi on my home network connects just fine, surfs just fine, until I connect andFtp to my Mac. Initially, everything is good...connects fine, ls- fine, allows selection of file on host and destination on client. The problem comes in between 2% & 5% transfer; wifi stalls, socket disconnects(Server kick out?), wifi becomes inactive for anything/everything. I can cycle the wifi and it 's functionality returns. Then I'm back at the start. Thought it was andFtp, but it works fine with my website, as does my Mac.
So I guess my question is....why would/should/could FTP cause the wifi to fail?
Thanks in advance

Not exactly the same as your issue but I see you use CM7 and thats the one ROM that I have had wifi issues with, do the problems occur when the screen goes to sleep ?The issue I have is that regardless of wifi sleep policy when the screen goes to sleep, although I am "connected" streaming radio starts to stutter,or transfer rates will crash,I know its not the same issue as the one you have but here is a link to bug report for CM 7
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=4232
The motorola milestone was/is plagued by similar issues when using WPA2 with certain access points. I think it was related to buggy TI wifi drivers.
For milestone, this was recently fixed in kabaldans CM7 port.
Maybe the defy is using the same buggy drivers?

Thank you both for the answers.
Bombardier, sleep seems irrelevant, it does stutter and I am on wpa2, figure I'll try something different now, eh?
Nanzy, ill try the other rom you mentioned.
Thanks again.

This turns out to be the solution. Switching to WPA solved the entire issue. Thanks again for the insight.

WiFi problems (4.2.1)

OK this is really pissing me off. Everyone time I go on my nexus device it doesn't automatically connect to the WiFi.. I have to either disable the WiFi and reenable it. Or just click on my network and click connect (it says its saved but doesn't automatically connect when I turn on my device), i tried everything from forgetting every saved network, restarting me device, ect, and its not my routers problem, my DNA connects automatically when I turn it on. Any of you guys had this problem? If so what did you do to fix it?

what router? My nexus 7 is fine and so is my sgs1.
No idea what router I have but that's not the problem, problem is that when I turn on my nexus and get passed the lockscreen, the WiFi would normaly automatically connect. It for some reason stopped doing that and it gets really annoying manually connecting

Hi,
I share the same problem. Upon a reboot, it will work normally for a while.
Once they symptoms starts, it will refuse to connect most of the time. When it does connect, it will disconnect within a couple of minutes. WPS wont respond either. toggle wifi/airplane mode does not work either.
The only way is to reboot.
However, I did have some findings but couldnt get it fixed! Do this and test if it works for you as well:
Go to terminal (needs to be rooted device):
Simply select the "Take wifilock/B]" option and it will stay connected!
Release it and it will get disconnected and back to the same issue.
Hopefully some experts can give us some pointers?
Temporary fix
I have the same problem. This is what i did to fix it: Settings- Wifi settings- advanced- switch always on to Never, reboot in recovery, clear cache, reboot your device and go back and turn Wifi back to Always on. this is a temporary fix because if you reboot or shutdown your device, you will need to redo the steps. this is a known problem with google's 4.2 jellybean. we need an update soon!
hope it helps you.
Thanks for your help

It won't be much comfort to you, but remember that "it takes two to tango".
Yeah, there's IEEE standards for all of this stuff. Do interop problems still happen? All the frigging time, every day. Sure it is maddening.
And sometimes the problems only manifest themselves with an exact pair of firmware(s) releases between the AP and the client device. I had a WiFi router that would gladly talk to four or five unique types of devices; on the sixth - an Android phone - it would associate & authenticate successfully, but the client device would never get an IP address.
That sure sounds like a problem with the phone, doesn't it?
How did I fix the problem? I upgraded the firmware ... on the router !
Sometimes problems with intermittent connections can be rectified by fooling with things that you might think have no bearing on the problem. For instance, some routers will accept connections in A/B/G/N mode. Do you need all of those? If not, simplify your router's behaviors by disabling non-essential features, e.g. select G-only or N-only.
That's just an example - but the point is that the fewer behaviors either of the devices engage in, the lower the probability that the bug which is shared between them will get expressed.
So, you can either fool around with both devices, only one of them - changing one setting at a time to see if that alters the behavior you observe, or you can throw one device away and start all over with new combinations of devices. The router probably has more knobs which can be turned than the phone does (unless it's not your router, or you don't control it).
Good luck

[Q] Wifi and me - not happening! Piece of CRAP google!

I'm sure I'm not alone in this.
My N4 won't connect to wifi. Well it connects but Won't keep a connection to complete a playstore app install nor update the system itself?
This is what I posted on "Issue 40065: Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 Wifi Drops connection Android 4.2"
New device just received. Will connect to wifi but unable to install any apps thru play store.... Just shows data transferring but none actually happens. I'm unable to install none of the gapps updates. Left it alone for 2 days did not help. removing password from router and making it an open router did not help. Now trying to decide I should return the device as it is only usable as a phone not a multimedia device which this N4 should be?
There are a lot of people having the same kind of issue on this phone. A little search brings up lots and lots of complaints.
Still unable to connect to my router encore model 2AN3.
Tried to connect to open wifi router at McD and [email protected]#$ - still no go. It will connect think about it and stops. The icon at the top turns green and gray and keeps doing it.
How ever I was able to connect to the open wifi router on another Nexus S (my older phone) and was able to download updates and install said applications from play store.
This tells me that hardware is good. Software coded so badly that it is unable to keep a connection to routers.
So if you need to use this phone on a wifi router - wait until google fix this or get another phone.
As for me - it is a shame I will have to return this phone to google as it is useless media device. Just a phone which I can get a cheap phone for 10 bucks not $400 piece of [email protected]#$%T.
Sorry for the RANT.

Also flashed rom CM10.1 stable and xylon 17 stable. Still same problem repeated. both ROMS can connect to my hotspot on my NS but unable to neither my home router nor public wifi.
A few things I have tried.
1. avoid poor wifi disabled.
2. switch chennels to 6 or 8 - tried all.
3. Resetting routers
4. Assigning static IP address
5. Cleared cache from recovery
6. changed the Wi-Fi band from 'Auto' to 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz
7. Flashed new kernel Running franko.
8. Flashed 2 other ROMS/cm10.1 and xylon17 both stable versions.
My home router have not trouble connecting to all other devices at home (NS, HP touchpad, 3 desktop and 3 other laptops, Tried with N4 being the only device that was turned on. : still no go!! WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY!!!
Also followed the directions from this thread. Still no candy.
Please take a poll and let post here if you should find a good solution.
Mine works flawlessly. You should contact Google for a RMA.

I just called. This guy treated me like I'm noob. But I digress.. He asked me to turn off GPS and try again saying that GPS and wifi together can not be on at the same time. That still did not work. So there is a request for replacement. Not really sure when I will get it. But keep my finger crossed - that I get a working wifi and gps at the same time ??
Don't really want to return it though since I like the phone form factor and such!
What a shame.

Why wouldn't WiFi and GPS work together? I don't see any reason as to why one would interfiere with another

You shouldn't be flashing ROMs to try and fix something as basic as this. You're only adding more variables to the problem. My WiFi has been rock solid, and so apparently is that of most other posters. This would tend to indicate that there is a specific problem with your phone.
Unless there is something seriously wrong with your router it's RMA time I reckon.

I see your point and I agree.
But after a full day of fiddling with it on stock ROM, what the hell not?

I sure did! But I also tried a couple of other fixes I have found on the web and on this forum. That did not help either.

I reckon, I will.
Just to re-iterate .....
Wifi works if I connect to my other nexus S's hot spot.
Wifi will not stay connected to allow me to go to play store on any wifi router (home Encore ENHWI-2AN3 firmware version 1.1.3 - Mcdee's open wifi and [email protected]#'s open wifi router.) It will connect - get a blue wifi icon with a few arrows ..... but will go to gray and back to blue and so on ....
Waiting for google to make up its mind about shipping me a replacement.

Wifi problems, yet another one...

Here's my problem, and I've seen many problems with wifi here and on other forums but nothing exactly like this.
When I'm at work, my phone connects to the network over there without any problem but, every time I come home, it simply shows my network as "Not in range", even at 2 feet away from the router (WPA PSK security). I've tried turning wifi off and on, resetting my router, "forgetting" my network on the phone. Nothing does the trick unless, I restart my phone and then it connects automatically and stays connected until I leave.
Something strange I noticed tonight; I went to my son's hockey game and, at the arena, I noticed it still showed as connected to my home network!?!?!!?
I started noticing this issue a few days ago, after flashing the 4.2.2 image from Google. My phone is rooted and is running the latest clockworkmod recovery but otherwise, still stock.
Something else I just noticed; my Nexus 7 doesn't have the same issue...
Anybody else having the same issue? Any hints on what's going on?
I also have this issue. But I had the problem before 4.2.2

Got to work this morning... wouldn't connect to the network here because... It was still connected at home, 40km away. That's a powerful router!
Any clues as to what might be the cause?
What brand/type of wireless router are you using? What type of security?
We gotta be more than 2 with this problem... I've seen so many issues with wifi with this phone on other threads... Weird
Last night I went to my parents and again, my phone wouldn't connect to their home network so, its definitely not my router. So I made a backup of all my apps and returned to 4.2.1 and voila, wifi problems are fixed, for now...

WiFi not connecting

As the title says, when I leave the house and come back it doesn't automatically connect to WiFi, anyone else have this problem?
I've changed the 2.4 and 5ghz to manual with no joy, its back to auto now.
Any other ideas?
Same problem here... :/ Using a Nexus 6p as well, when I get home it never connects, need to turn wifi off, and then back on to be able to connect...
No problem here with my work and home WiFi, both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.
I had that problem and fixed it by changing channels and going down from 40mhz to 20mhz. Not sure which made the difference but my 6p connects right away now whilst before I had to toggle the WiFi.

I also have an issue connecting my Nexus 6P to my corporate Wifi network - I am seeking the specific details, but all I know so far is that it's a CISCO Access Point. The Nexus 6 had no problems at all. A colleague did briefly get his 6P connected, but then it appeared to break (he's not sure, but suspects it was after the November security update). It continually tried to connect and then eventually says Authentication problem (despite trying all sensible options for Forgetting, rebooting, changing password, confirming it still works for Nexus 6 w/ new password etc etc)
I am seeing this same issue with all of the 5GHz networks i use. It connects just fine but i need to choose it in the pulldown settings...does not automatically connect anymore.
This is something that started happening out of nowhere. it was fine after the latest update at the beginning of november but now has this issue.
Maybe reflash the system and clear the cache may do the trick but need to try.
Wondering why this is not an issue being spoken about more here. I'm sure its more widespread than it would seem here...
This is happening to my Nexus 6p too. when the phone switches to data network it doesnt connect back to wifi, i have to manually toggle the wifi on phone to connect to my wifi.
I have tried this at my friends home too and it doesnt look like an issue with the router, my nexus 6 connects compeletly fine without any issues.
Also I have noticed wifi disconnect when the screen is closed intermittently?
Is this an hardware issue?
Here is another person having the same problems. I changed my phone but I'm having the same issue on the new phone. It doesn't matter which location my phone is. It happens on every location.

Had the same thing. Connected just fine until something suddenly changed and it wasn't working anymore. It worked on other access points of the same WLAN as well as my home WLAN. Yesterday I changed the DNS Hostname of my Nexus (because "android-[insert random number here]" makes no sense) and suddenly it works again. Could be a coincidence though...
I've seen this issue on 5ghz networks on an HTC one m7, a Samsung galaxy s6 , this device and my Samsung Galaxy tab 4. It would seem to me it's an android issue.
Count me as another one with the automatic connectivity not working. Running stock 6.0.1 on Nexus 6P
