Hi guys, because the nexus does not support usb host I'm looking for a wireless hard drive to store data. Anyone know of any good brands? I'm looking to store movies on it so I can stream it to my nexus while I have to connected to the tv via hdmi slim port. Thanks!

I also am looking to get a wireless hard drive as well, but I'd love to hear opinions from a real user before purchasing.
Would you be so kind to answer my questions...?
Is it the 16GB or 32GB?
What are the kinks of the Wi-Drive?
Is there a limitation of file types, of which that be played/opened?
Are you satisfied with the drive? What are your main uses for the drive?
i just got my Patriot Gauntlet Node with OCz ssd. I liked the idea of the Gauntlet Node over the Wi-Drive or GoFlex since it was just an enclosure so you can put any size 2.5" SSD or HDD, in theory. The Gauntlet doesnt work with the ocz ssd at all, wifi or usb, it would broadcast the network and bridge the internet but no drives were mounted. I also tried a Seagate HDD that only worked with usb and same result with wifi. I updated the Gauntlet's firmware but still didnt work. Not much support from Patriot either, i found out the Gauntlet is made by another company and Patriot just re-branded it so they just tell you to recharge the batteries or update firmware. Looks like it's going back and might go for the 128gb Wi-Drive.

Is the internet bridge any good on the Wi-drive? The gauntlet capped the internet bridge network speed to about 2Mbps.
How is the battery life?

You could simplify that by getting a complete media center, like WD TV Live Hub(which is top notch) or something similar.
It's more expensive than a simple wifi hard drive, but well worth the price imo..

+1 on this. I love my WD TV Live Hub. I wish it had more HD space built-in as 1 TB get filled up pretty quickly with 1080p movies, but plugging external USB drives into it works very well and I can access all the movies with my N4 or Xoom.
I guess it comes down to what you are looking for. I would think about getting the Wi-Drive since it is portable giving you the ability to watch movies on your N4 anywhere and for extra portable file storage. The WD TV Live Hub gives you a lot more space for your buck, ~$200 for 1 TB on the Hub versus ~$100 for 64GB on the Wi-Drive.
This thread has me thinking about creating a folder on my Live Hub just for expanded storage for my N4. I already use my N4 to control the Live Hub, so why not use the Hub to make backups of my nandroids and rom files.

For the OP if you just want to stream stuff at your house you dont need any extra hard drive, there are lots of options. You can just use your local network and use ES file explorer to stream and play movies/music or set up a upnp server and use a upnp app on your nexus to play it.

That Corsair Voyage Air looks very appealing. Its basically the seagate go flex satellite with extra features.
Depending on the price, i might as well buy it. I think i can wait a couple of months. Although, the 16GB kingston wi-drive looks really tempting in its current price.
Regardless, I just wish some one would make a wireless usb hub/microsd card reader....It would be the be all end all solution for future debates on a gadget's storage size, usb on the go support, and inclusion of external storage.

If your router has a USB port, you can attach an external hard drive and share the content.

Edit:
So it seems the consensus is that this will probably not have HDMI out (through a cable)
But obviously it can stream it's video over wifi (or bluetooth?)
So I want to know if anyone knows of a cheap solution. Like using Apple TV or Nexus Q (But MUCH cheaper)
Also, would wifi streaming, say Netflix, AND wifi streaming to the TV destroy the streaming quality of Netflix?
Let's figure this out!
So I don't think this has an HDMI port (Maybe micro to Hdmi?)
But does anyone know cheap wifi HDMI out solutions? Like Apple TV, but CHEAP.
This is one thing worrying me about this tablet. ($300 for the Q is horrible)

The one used on stage may have been one of those with that mysterious 3rd port that we won't have.
It's a great tablet, still planning to get one, but they probably left it out the spec for a reason.

That's may not the same model that's shipping though. We may not get this feature on the consumer version.
Check out around the 9:00 mark of the keynote. Whether it makes it to production is to be seen but obviously they are putting video out.. also on the Google Play Store under tech specs they don't mention the Galaxy Nexus has MHL.. but it does
Once MHL is confirmed I'll probably have to order up another Nexus 7 to use as a media server. I'd just mount it to my stereo cabinet and run it through my receiver. Too bad the HP Touchpad never had MHL support, it'd give new life to my soon to be retired device.
The Q would upset and confuse anyone who didn't already know what it was if they saw it in my living room. I'm not very impressed with the amplifier on it either.
Yeah If they confirm MHL I'm in. It does look like they had special versons with hdmi though. I'd be saddened to learn that I can't hook it to a tv. It was a deffinate buy for me before but without hdmi I'm out.

So prbly no HDMI, and if it has MHL we won't know until it comes out. So we may as well prepare for it not having MHL.
If it has it, well then this thread could be useful for a different device.
If it doesn't, then this thread is important
Either way. This will help people feel better about their purchase if they know there is an HDMI alternative.
I agree. I hope there is MHL but if there is another HDMI alternative I'm all ears.

Actually I re-watched the videos, and the only cord they are using is plugged into the Micro USB SO:
A) There is MHL (at least on the display, but why not all of them?)
B) They were just keeping it charged while they streamed the video through the Nexus Q (more likely)
If only we could ask someone that just got one free at the event!
Edit: Just tweeted to Aaron Baker of PhoneDog.com who received a free Nexus 7 at the I/O to let us know in his full review if it has MHL/HDMI and Tablet support. We will see what happens.

Yeah, once you root it. Average 'users' are either scared off by that or don't even know what that means.
That said, yes, it is very sad there isn't a bigger storage option or USB OTG host capability otb, but we make it work however we have to.

Do people not read??
If you actually took a blind bit of notice instead of just posting rubbish. The whole point of the tablet is to use cloud storage.
For me it's different. I always looked at 32gb and 64gb devices (phones or tablets) as a waste of cash. It's so easy to just delete/replace music or movies. I guess some people have so much music and videos to store in their devices. Why not just put 4-5 movies, 4-5 gb of music, a few games and apps.
I wouldn't like to pay 100$ more just to get an extra 16gb, when I can buy a 2tb external hard drive for the same price or a 500gb portable HDD.
You need more than 16 movies on the device at one time to enjoy it?
I understand cloud storage is supposed to be the greatest thing since Japan... but if your internet connection is not rock solid you get buffer bloat and an awful experience, I would prefer to have my music local in flac.
Incidentally I'm still not sure what a tablet is supposed to do... I mean why not just use a laptop, I love android but windows is so much more capable and justifies a case.
Can't really make use of cloud storage when sitting on long car trips, and tethering 3G to watch a 3-4GB movie is far from ideal. Cloud storage is in its infancy with the bandwidth restrictions we have, not quite ready yet.

Actually don't make your decision based on the SD storage (again its not an issue for some). Have a look at the defects threads, quality of the product and manufacturing defects before you make the call. All these issues are reported from 2-3 weeks of usage.
Good luck.

If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand. Seriously. I used to make those same arguments. One doesn't replace the other. I carry an i7 notebook with 16 GB of RAM just about everywhere I go, at least have it in the truck, and I also take my tablet. If you ever get in the habit of using one or carrying one, it will make sense but it's hard to explain it to someone that hasn't gotten used to one. My other tablet is a 32 GB Transformer Prime, and I've never needed to use 16 GB. I use 25 or so GB but it's only because a lot of nandroid backups on there are old and I haven't gotten around to cleaning house that week on my internal storage. I go through about once a week or so and clear out about 10 GB or so of old nandroid backups.

Movie wise, if you officially buy them they will be in cloud storage requiring network connection and you also have the option to download them. If you load the mp4s onto your device it takes up space
Or do what I did and use a NAS server (I use a raspberry pi - for low electricity cost what with it being on all day/night - with samba client and 1TB external hard disk) at home and copy films and content you want for the day/week/month off of that. Can stream from it up to about 720p with no problems any higher requires a bit of buffering if I am in the house or even at another wifi spot (a bit more buffering required depending on connection).
As for portable storage I have installed about 21 games already including some like shadowgun, batman, NOVA 3 and Modern Combat 3 that take up a load of space and I still have 5GB left free on the Nexus. If you want more room then I hear Apple make a nice 32GB wi-fi only model for just £479...oh and that's not expandable either. Even if you go for the 16GB wifi only the money you save by buying the nexus 7 is enough to rent more than a film a week for the next year.
My plan is too use my USB OTG cable (that i ordered from amazon) for use of movies and the 16 Gb for apps

They want to push their cloud services and media through google play. How many movies do you need on there at once?
You could make the same argument about any tablet that doesnt have infinite storage.
"What's the point of a tablet that can't store every movie ever made in the contiguous 48 states!!?! Argh!"

just a quick question about the external storage function a nexus 7 has. I know you have to be rooted, but does it have to be 2.0?? i was planning on buying a small 2.0 16gb drive. but then i saw this on Amazon. Seems like a good price to me.

That drive should be fine. It will just use the speed allowed by the slowest connection, which would be the usb 2.0 protocol.

Yeah I tried to find something on craigslist but came up with nothing. ebay has some but I don't like buying electronics from other people. Best buy has them for $55. I just found a $25 gift card but still not sure if its worth it lol How good does it work with games? Main reason for all this is my xbox 360 broke and don't have the money to buy a new one. Also with the possibility of a new one coming out this year, I'd rather wait. But I'd like to play games still but the touch screen just isn't efficient.
Huh? You guys didn't know you could do it without an OTG cable? I was under the impression that 99% of people just used the PC Software.
BTW, MAKE sure you buy an original Sony controller. If not, you'll probably never even get it synced. Sir_earl has said countless times that 3rd party controllers aren't the same and he hasn't really been able to support them.

Interesting specs
MediaTek Quad-core ARM 1.3 GHz
Wi-Fi supports 2x2 MIMO 802.11a/b/g/n/ac
no 4k, which is understandable with the specs. Still 1gig memory and 8 gig storage. It also says optional ethernet. So maybe a dongle to split the mini usb is going to be sold.
yea...quad-core from dual-core is an upgrade but same amount of RAM. Wonder if it's able to handle Kodi fluidly like the AFTV box. Still, "It has the same 8GB internal storage and 1GB of RAM as the original, but makes the jump from Bluetooth 3.0 to 4.1. The device can also decode H.265 video, no doubt future-proofing for future streaming and media support. Finally, 802.11ac WiFi support has been added."
Will buy one to test it's performance...

I prefer an Android TV box, not just an Android box. Having to pull out a keyboard/mouse/touchpad for a lot of the major apps is a pain. The Android TV boxes including the fire tv and stick have dedicated apps that work with the included remote, I own one of these Android boxes running Android 6 and although it does kodi pretty well and connects to a usb hard drive / flash drive playing local media really well, where it lacks is the efficency of thr U.I with apps like hbogo, showtime, bbc iplayer, itv player, etc. Even Netflix is annoying with the Android boxes where you still need a secondary device like a BT or usb type keyboard / touchpad to access seasons of a show. Some of these Android boxes have a small mouse remote where you click the arrows to move around. Way too inefficient. Point is there's something about these fire tv and stick devices and Android TV boxes that integrate apps better than an Android box. I'm keeping my eye on the Xiaomi mi that's coming out for $69 and it's a true Android TV box.

I wouldn't mind helping you. I just don't know exact shipping cost via US Post Office it would be, my guess is around 13-20$. I sometimes ship to my home country Poland and lightweight packages cost around 13$ and usually arrive in 3-7 days.
Then they might hit you with custom fees so you would have to prepared for that as well. I'm here for many years so you won't have any issues trusting me, if you are interested you can PM me. Sometimes I might take longer to respond but I sure can help you.
Thanks.
I just PMed you. Much appreciated.

The remote is the only downside. It requires hard press, but with a wireless keyboard, this thing is just beautiful.
