Thanks for participating
Thanks for your interest in providing fast feedback about the upcoming AT&T ATRIX 4G software update.
Here's how it works.
> Up to a thousand AT&T ATRIX 4G owners will receive the update. If you sign up, your phone may be included.
> This is what we call a "pre-launch soak." We'll watch what happens for about two days, just to make sure there is nothing wrong with the update or the update process.
> You will be trialing FINAL software. This is not a beta test. In most cases, this is the software that will be released, unless we find an extremely serious issue. Your feedback will help us identify issues that may require a later fix, and help us prepare others for getting used to the new software. Your feedback will be extremely valuable and we do hope you will take part!
> When you receive the update, we would appreciate your quick feedback. Selected users will be provided a link to a private community shortly before the update is pushed. All of your comments and questions should be posted there, and that's where we'll provide more information.
> Downgrading the software to the previous version will not be possible.
> We will also distribute one or more surveys to get your evaluation of the process and the software.
If this sounds good, please confirm that you wish to take part by completing this short registration form.
Thanks!
NOTE: This is NOT the only question you must answer to participate. There are several short pages to complete -- make sure you see the "Thank you" page or you have not successfully completed the process.
Are you interested in participating?
NOTE: This is merely the FIRST question in this registration. You must complete additional questions to be included.

What is your phone's IMEI number? You can find it by dialing *#06# (star-pound-zero-six-pound) on your phone's keypad.
I can't stress how important it is that you provide a valid IMEI. You will likely not get the software during this test if your IMEI is wrong.
> Be sure your IMEI is 15 characters long.
> It probably starts "35XXX"
You may have already provided this on other forms, but we need to confirm it here to ensure that you are included.

I'm in Canada and obviously not really on att so I can't test this, also it doesn't seem real and I don't feel like giving out my imei number.

Cool, I just got a gnex and was all ready to sell the atrix, maybe I'll end up giving it to my hubby now.
If I flash an att fruitcake can I get this ota? Not to install but to save the zip from the cache folder and share.
Guys seriously, it's not a scam. I've participated in soak tests for Motorola and that is exactly how they send out the invites

It could be real. Got the same email few months ago which gave me Atrix HD soak test.
Looks pretty much like previous soak test offers. The only question is, what's it going to be? Bugfixes for Gingerbread, ICS, or JB
Well i did it, see what happens
It's not scam is a real test that they do often, I'm also willing to test.

Same here. I had to return to stock (bone stock, no root, no unlocked bootloader) but it's done. Here's hoping it's more than just an update to GB.

I just hope it's all worth reverting to stock and having to manually re-install all the apps. I hate not being able to use backups.
Could it possibly be time to put down the pitchforks and stop burning effigies of Punit?
It can't be bug fixes for gingerbread I don't see why they would do that. Hopefully its ICS.
I just accepted so I'm going back to stock.
Although I have fruitcake only (no sbfs) and because the wifi doesn't work using it's kernel then I will need to use Faux123's kernel. That's as close to stock as I can get right now, I hope that's enough...

Okay, this was just an idea I had, but lets see if it works... assuming everyone can keep it civil here.
Post here when you receive the update, and put in the following information:
Date/Time Updated
Previous build (DI18, DG27, etc)
Geographic location
Months/Years with Sprint
With that information, maybe we can build a pattern and have an idea of when everyone's updates are scheduled.
Edit to add: Apparently release has been pushed to 9PM PST/12A EST-2/22/11
Good idea

You do know that this has nothing to do with you getting the update, right?
Don't the Android phones have some sort of internal identifier??? Kind of like Blackberry having PIN numbers. I thought Android had an internal identifier unique to each unit.
If so, they could be enabling a block of identifiers at a time.
If nobody on this forum has received the update yet, I would have to imagine it has not begun. However, androinica.com is reporting that it has begun.
the que goes by ESN lowest numbers get it before higher numbers. someone will post it on the net as soon as someone with half a brain gets the update.
I just checked my phone.... nothing YET and I'm in California near S.F. area.
There is someone in the sprint community forums who says they received it already.

that issue us irrelevant we just pull the update zip out of the system cache and then the devs will package it pre rooted and then with odin you can get official froyo rooted

I was curious about that as well, but obviously no one wants to post their esn here. If that is all it is, then bummer. But I don't know, I don't work for Sprint or anything, that was the point of the thread
Based on the previous information, it sounded like current build had more to do with it than ESN, but again, I don't know, that's the purpose of the thread
Yeah, best we can do is just wait until somebody gets it.
It's like trying to find the Golden Ticket.
Could you guys all stop rambling BS, this thread is going to be 10 pages long before anyone even gets the first OTA. If you guys wanna talk BS why not use this sites chat feature.
I like this thread. Will possibly come in handy for future Sprint updates.
I am flashing back to DI18 now and will post the update.zip if I get it before its posted here.
Guys if you get the update DO NOT INSTALL OR REBOOT. PM one of the developers and we will help you dump the cache. I have heard of several people getting the update but failing during the install process... It hopefully won't be long.
I assume that we'll need to be on the stock rom to get the update. Is that the case? I'm about to flash it back right now...

Yes. You will need to be on Stock DI18 with all of the bloat apps installed.
I'm sure someone will release a streamlined update.zip nixing the verification.

Those of you flashing back, make sure you don't install it as we don't know if we can even root it yet with current methods.
Has anyone had any success in whining their way to a free upgrade? I'm not suggesting it or really considering it I'm just curious. I've personally done it in the past when I've had issues with a phone but that was from a completely different issue than the extreme lack of updates. I'm personally not really considering it and the only thing that would possibly change my mind is if the devs on here completely ditch the phone. Which would be understandable considering the lack of releases of fascinate source code or updates from Samsung. PS thank you devs, you make this phone great.
This?

Its possible if you can work your way up the ladder to someone in vzw that has the authority to do so. Im on a business contract with about 20 lines though, I imagine we get treated better than individual contracts.

It's quite easy.. File an FCC complaint. I've done it twice with two carriers. If your complaint is valid, they WILL fix it, seeing as the FCC ups the fees they pay if they have high unresolved complaint rates. Last time I did it was because of my Incredible-ey (pun) bad phone reception.
Just try not to abuse the power, as it is one of the last remaining ways we have to flex our consumer muscle.
Thought about that to considering all the new toys coming out But I really enjoy my Fascinate and even more so now that I have learned how to flash/hack/adb control my device. Custom roms are fun!

Thats how I got my fascinate. I went to T Mobile, got the new windows phone 7. They grabbed the manager and I got an upgrade a year early.

I sent an email out and got them to allow me to upgrade to a thunderbolt for 125 bucks. They were trying to send me a refurb for free and not extend my contract, but I pushed back a few times and finally got them to send me a TB for that price. I did have to do 2 year contract, but at least I'm getting a new phone, that I don't have to wait on Samsung to update, or verizon for that matter. I was polite and made my case about how every time I go to the verizon store, that I was told someone had gotten froyo, and it would be right around the corner. I do believe if you present your case without being disrespectful, you can get an upgrade.

Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless through our website. I apologize for the delay in responding to your inquiry. My name is A'Darryl, and I am happy to assist you in regards to getting an upgrade to a device that has the Froyo 2.2 software upgrade.
I can certainly understand your concern with getting an upgrade to a device that has the Froyo 2.2 software upgrade; I know the importance of customizing your device to your preferences. I am happy to provide you some information in regards to your inquiry.
Verizon Wireless is committed to providing quality customer service. As a reflection of my commitment to you, I attempted to call you on the contact number ending in X6839 at approximately 2:45pm to provide you with some additional information needed to complete your request.
I have reviewed your account and I see your update date is not until June 1, 2012. At this time, we are unable to move your equipment upgrade date to allow an upgrade. I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause you. I do not have a definitive date as to when the Froyo 2.2 software update will be available for the Samsung Fascinate.
Should i continue to ***** or just call it quits?

I completely love this phone. The only way I would consider an upgrade is if the devs on here continued to slow down at the rate they have. I don't blame them for anything it's more frustrating for them when they have to either port code from another phone or wait the ridiculous amount of time for an actual update.
what email did you contact? I figure i might as well give it a shot using the "i need froyo thing."

EDIT 2: It appears to be up OTA so connect to wifi and check for an update!
Edit for those who just came here to figure out what was going on with 1.83:
It would appear that some sort of error occurred in which the beta of 1.83 was released OTA to a few people and to even more through the computer connect update software. This is why people were reporting that they had had success downloading the new update. However it was not available for everyone and appears to have been pulled completely. Things were made more confusing because AT&T and Motorola both appeared to make some false claims that the new update was beginning its release on April 29th. However this was a mistake and they later retracted their claims either by deleting the comment altogether or saying that they meant that the beta would be released to limited amounts of people at that time. This appears to be the cause of all of the confusion, but the bottom line is that the official update is NOT out yet, and if you want the 1.83 beta that others have gotten, check around, it isn't too hard to find!
Original post:
So I came across an AT&T answers page actually listing 4.1.83 on the site which said it was available and all I had to do was connect to wifi and check for updates to get it.
So I think "SWEET!" and try it, but still no luck
By this time I figure alright if AT&T is listing this but it's not up may as well go ahead and bother their tech support for a while and see if I get any answers
They take a LONG time to answer my question and eventually tell me that there is no 1.83 update. To which I reply "Excuse me, BS, here is exactly what YOUR site says" -copy, paste, and post link to it-
They take a long time, then completely ignore it and tell me to access my phones settings and tell them what software version I am running.
Meanwhile I get a little suspicious about whats going on and open a new window and follow the link I sent them.
It had been edited WHILE I was talking to them! The 1.83 part had been completely taken out. All that was left was the 1.57 update. The tech support person continued to play dumb and tell me there was only a 1.57 update and that I could contact motorola if I had any more issues.
I'll post a screenshot of what the site said when I accessed it this morning. I don't know if the info on that page is old news to these forums or when it even went up, but At&T certainly has their heads up their asses.
Oops, forgot about that mention. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
Did you tell them there are even websites with benchmarks out there like
Anandtech?

I talked with them a bit more after posting.
I told them that this was not a Motorola issue, and that I now wanted to know what had happened with the AT&T site and that I saw that it had been edited. They continued to post more Motorola contact info and asked if they could help me in any other way.
I told them that they could start by actually reading what I was typing to them, and repeated that the page had been edited. I am subjected to more waiting until finally the associate tells me they "didn't see" the second update before, but now they know what I am talking about. The page is still edited so I have no idea how they saw it right then... but yeah.
They then ask me to connect to wifi and try to perform the update. Told them I already did. They then say, that maybe AT&T recalled the update and tell me to wait. I wait. Then they come back asking if I have contacted motorola, I tell them no. They then link me to a post in motorolas forums and tell me to check there.
The thread I am linked to is merely people complaining about the same page on AT&T that I was referring to in the first place... with no answer on it as to what was going on, when I point this out the associate remains silent. I continue to do other things on my computer checking back every few minutes. After 10 minutes of silence I go ahead and tell them that I could see that they were not even going to try to help me and closed out the conversation.
Disappointing, though I am now reasonably certain that I am the reason the page got edited haha
OTA
So do we know if anybody has gotten the update OTA or has it all been "self-help" installation. AT&T changing their website makes it appear delays to OTA update. Question remains, is it becuase of AT&T or Motorola?
That's classic, I wonder what they would say if I walked into a store and asked about the 1.83 update, especially since I have it on my phone already so I can prove it exists.

My guess would be att, since Motorola had it officially on one of their websites for a USB link update
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
If you check the motorola owners forums, they say the update hasnt officially been publicly released although, many ppl besides beta testers were able to snag the update before it seemed to have been pulled. You can always download the 1.83 SBF thats floating around and flash to it.
Nothing new here. AT&T sticking thier heads and the sand and ignoring the customer. Can not/will not even respond to direct legitimate questions. Maybe it is time to try to get their attention another way. here is the link where you can post comments to the FCC concerning their attempt to monopolize. http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/
I think everybody that has an issue with at&t's customer support, rate plans, crippling devices, false advertising, etc., that have tried to get answers or support with no satisfaction should make these issues known. If the congressional reps on the committees start asking the same questions we have, then maybe, just maybe, att will understand we are customers, and not just a source of income. Maybe I should start a thread just for this so we get as many people as possible to send their thoughts along.
I've been running 1.83 since the 29th and I'm not a beta tester. I actually got it by downloading the Motorola software Updater from here http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/motosupport/source/SoftwareUpdateSummary.asp?country=USA&language=ENS&web_page_name=SUPPORT&strCarrierId=ATT&strPhone=Motorola%20ATRIX(TM)%204G&strCable=Micro%20USB%20Data%20Cable&strURL=https://rsddownload.motorola.com/download/SoftwareUpdateforATTATRIX4Gversion.4.1.57.pdf.
All I did was plug my phone in and it looked for an update for like 5 minutes then said there was one available and asked if I wanted to install it (Of course yes) 15 min later it was done. I actually flashed back to 1.26 3 times and updated to 1.83 like this because I messed up root (Come to find I just needed gingerbreak). Some people can't get it so I'm not sure if they took it down from moto or what the deal was. Everything on the page says 1.57 but it still let me update to 1.83 multiple times so I donno.

Well, that turned out to be as pointless as I expected it to be, no one had any clue what I was talking about or why the update would be there one minute then all traces be gone the next. Their only suggestion was maybe there was a bug in it.

Maybe there going to update to unlock unknown apps so u can install Amazon app n other programs.

From what i've read, i'm guessing the 1.83 update is still in beta testing, but for some reason someone in ATT's dev team messed up and relayed it as "release" to another ATT team and motorola, who put it up on their websites as available for download without further questioning. If anyone got it through OTA, they might have been part of the first wave before someone in ATT realized the mistake and pulled the update out.
Then ATT decided to go for a "what update?" policy instead of "whoops."
If the build date of the leaks wasn't enough proof that Motorola is very busy working on Kit Kat, let this be further proof:

Needless to say, I am impressed.
I hope so, im in pain seeing users here from AT&T enjoying their 4.4.
And then Verizon "tests" it for next 9 months.

I'm talking more on Motorola's end. This is quite admirable what they're doing.
Obviously, the carriers will **** around like they always do. But that's not Motorola's fault really.

I never understood why the carriers didn't have an opt-in program to get updates ASAP that essentially cut off your customer service if you opted in. Here, you can do it, but no, we won't help you. Its a flag on your account, so anywhere you go they'll see it and know not to help you. Their point is that they don't want to help people on 'untested' updates... fine then, don't help them. But this would be a HUGE PR boon for whatever carrier does it.
This is good news! Hopefully Verizon won't be too far behind. Maybe a couple weeks like the camera update.

It's basically an opt-in staged roll out. If you register, you have the ability to be the first to receive an update... so there's a sizeable pool for motorola to determine if there are any major bugs before giving it to the masses. Typically, these things happen and everyone else gets the update about a week later.

A soak test is where a group of people are chosen to do a sort of private beta test on the firmware, to make sure things don't assplode or catch fire before the software is rolled out to everyone.

You need to do it if you want to have a chance at being invited for soak.
Verizon guys are already getting soak tests and us Dev Edition owners have nothing. Weird.

It's probably because to most people updates are not something they think about. The people that unsupported updates would appeal to are probably very small and at least to the carriers probably seems more complicated to have more programs rather than less.
The other concern of theirs isn't support. It's about their network. Verizon is really strict about how their network can be used and that's a big part of the reason that ATT got the iPhone for years before verizon. They want absolute control over how the network is used probably due to a fear of a small number of devices clogging up bandwidth.
The funny thing is in spite of the rules bootloaders get unlocked. Phones get rooted. ROMs get flashed and it doesn't seem to cause many apparent problems.
Edit: and I'll just add that most carrier support is clueless anyway - most answers are
-reset your phone
-delete all of your apps.
-do something you already tried.
I hope 4.4 kit kat won't affect Moto X's good battery life.
DAN ROSENBERG HAS FOUND AN EXPLOIT TO UNLOCK THE MOTO X (AND OTHER DEVICES) BOOTLOADER!!!
Will he release it? Your guess is as good as mine...

EDIT 9/22/14: Unlock now available for Droid Maxx, Mini, Ultra, and THE MOTO X!!!
Find the tool at http://theroot.ninja
Cost is $25 per device. Works on 4.4.3 and BELOW, and *some* 4.4.4. You have to try the app to find out. You do NOT pay unless the tool confirms compatibility.

Lots of interest in the Moto X forums.........none here???
Well, when I entered this thread my opinion was "WTF, again, what chance this guy has against Motorola cryptography?" BUT, why not? There is nothing can be gathered from my unlock code, except my IMEI (reverse calculate from the unlock token or database match - both of which are unlikely) which could be used by Moto to re-lock my BL but if they wanted to, they would've done it with the latest update.
I'm going with it!
Good luck, @samwathegreat

Thanks. Keep in mind, we are NOT attempting to crack Moto's cryptography, as I well know that this isn't possible (in my lifetime, at least). Instead, we are trying to find if a single code has successfully unlocked more than one device. There isn't any proof, based on Dan Rosenburg's (author of the Razr M Bootloader Exploit) analysis of the "token validation" logic, that the code is based on the IMEI.....although it COULD be the case. This whole thing is quite the mystery - especially the "China Middleman" aspect of it.
Dan suggests it is based on the particular certificate / key / hash / q-fuses for said devices. And once again....this is ALL based on complete speculation (as I've stated many times (don't care to count how many). )
Thanks to anyone who contributes and thanks for creating this effort! I have a BL locked Mini and it's a 2013 version so not only can I not pay (he only unlocks 2014s right now), but I don't have PayPal and I don't have $45. Really, this might work and so please post your codes if you want to help people like me... we can never know if it works until we try.

Is there a way to retrieve the code? I'm unlocked via the Tao bao site on the first go around. I used the IM feature on the site to communicate so I don't have the code in an email. I can't remember for the life of me how I signed on to look to see if it's still there. Is the code stored on the device anywhere once unlocked?

No way to retrieve it from the device itself....and I'm not familiar with Taobao (or how to look up a prior purchase from there). You can try searching your email (if you even received one) for your IMEI, as he usually included it along with the unlock token.
Aside from that, I don't have any suggestions. Thanks for trying to help though.
If moto x gets a way to unlock bl for free, it could help us a lot!
I just wanted to say "THANKS!" to all the ---jerks--- that are putting bogus info into the form.....like "12345", or the most recent "1".....yeah, thanks for the humor you're giving me. Including Mr. XDA username "a"...how original....

Collecting just unlock code make no sense. I think that code AT LEAST a hash code of IMEI. Well it might be not a IMEI but serial number or what ever. They run hashing on security chip and verify the signature. The chance of two phones having the same code is veeeeery low. In another words you won't find equal codes, I know for sure. The only way is to get how they calcualte the code but that would be hard because you don't know what it comes from and you have nothing at all, not even IMEI or serial.

OK, sure, we understand that. Now examine the logic. Nowhere does Dan Rosenburg suggest that the TOKEN is unique to a particular IMEI, OR in any way validated or hashed against the IMEI. Only that it is based on certificates / keys / hashes STORED in the CID partition, and blown Q-fuses.

And finally, I'll end this post by saying that curiosity is very important to achieve any new breakthroughs. Making "educated guesses" based on analysis of available data is the only way to make innovations and new discoveries. It's OK to be wrong, as long you use what you have learned to build upon your knowledge and use this information to improve future analytics.
This is a hypothesis based on the [small amount of] data currently available. Nothing more.

Please consider that we have no interest in what you are suggesting....which is actually breaking Moto's encryption / master key. Based off my knowledge of key / certificate - based cryptography, I am well aware that even IF we had 10,000 VALID unlock token / IMEI combinations, it would STILL likely take -longer than our combined lifetimes- to crack the master key. And that's assuming you are correct about there being a correlation between Token & Serial / IMEI. Have you considered "q-fuses"? Moto very well could have blown q-fuses (identically) in more than one device...
Personally, I have no interest in -that-. I'm not seeing what purpose collecting the IMEI combinations would have, other than deterring people from actually participating in this because they don't want to share their IMEI...
So my questions really is: What are you trying to say that I haven't already? Self-admittedly, this probably won't work....said it more times than I care to count in the first post alone...
And finally, EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion, and I welcome to you "speculate" however you wish! Lets just please not clog up this thread with any more of it. This thread has a specific purpose, and I'd like to keep it at that. Thanks

That is Dan Rosenberg's method. I've mentioned his name multiple times in the OP, as well as his "Token Validation Logic".
Since the Razr M/HD AND the Moto X have the exact same SoC (MSM8960), his token validation logic likely still applies. @Topsnake is correct in that it will not work on the Moto X, but its because that method exploited a vulnerability in TrustZone to write to (blow) q-fuses in the secure area, thereby unlocking the BL.
All of this is described in the OP, but thanks for trying to add some useful info
Hello everybody. This idea is getting alot more interest in the Moto X section, and one user asked if we would be willing to share some details on the data collected so far. Here it is:
samwathegreat said:
Sure! I think everyone deserves to know the current status....
As of RIGHT NOW, we have:
86 submissions
of which 5 are completely and purposely BOGUS
and 2 sets (4 submissions) are -complete duplicates- and were posted from the same IP, within seconds of each other (I wonder if they really thought I wouldn't look at the timestamps / IP addresses?)
zero correlations
What I can also tell you is that IF the build dates entered are correct, we do have 3 sets (6 submissions) that have the same build date and are completely unique codes. This would seem to rule out the previously suggested idea that perhaps all units from a particular build date might use the same unlock-token.
Still need much more data to make any further (useful) correlations.
Hope everyone appreciates the update.... :good:
