Hi all,
the nexus 7 is my first nexus device (although I am drooling at the nexus 4 ),
but I was just wondering if anyone else, who has owned a different nexus device, could tell me how long you normally have to wait for the next version of android?.
Thanks in advance
Cheers

Some of the features will be available on the Nexus 7, some won't and you'll need to get a whole new device costing a small fortune to get the full update. It might break things along the way without giving you a way back.
....but then I remember it's Android and not Apple!

..... I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say here.
Being part of the whole Nexus line, there's a good chance we'll get 4.2 pushed out when the Nexus 4 and 10 get released. Google will be keen to have its flagship line all under the same version.

I agree. Google made it pretty clear (to me at least) that the Nexus line will be receiving the 4.2 update. There was absolutely no mention of Nexus 7 not receiving certain aspects of the update. I would say that Nexus 7 would receive the update the same day the 4 and 10 are released as well.

This is a joke for you guys who don't get it. All Nexus devices get updated I think. I think even old ones like the Nexus S and all that.
Lol well if he meant it as a joke it didn't read like one. Especially since a new device owner was asking about something he deemed a legit concern. If it was meant as a joke then my fault.

I agree. Pretty dumb answer to someone asking a legitimate question.
Google was supposed to release the 4,2 update on October 29th, but according to Asus it has been delayed ever so slightly.Asus says to expect an update to android 4.2 very soon.

Looking forward to it. People aren't used to nexus devices, they are used to their galaxy tabs that take forever to update and get cut off too soon

My friend is still on stock N7 and got the update within a week. My dad is still on his stock S3 and the update won't come till next year.
Edit: I'm referring to 4.1.2 and 4.1.

I think you are confusing 4.1.2 with 4.2.
As far as I know, no one will have 4.2 before 13 November.

Expect android 4.2 on November 11th to November 12th on the nexus 7
Hi,
Thanks heaps guys, as long as we with the n7 arnt left in the lurch for weeks after the update comes out on the n4
My friend has a nexus s, and he had to wait a few weeks after 4.1 was released before he got it, but our devices are newer I suppose
Thanks
Cheers

Unless you sideload, don't expect it on the 13th. OTA rolling updates can take up to a couple of weeks.

Got a reliable source on that? I'm guessing no because it's not true. Google has never released an OS on the day it was announced, and when they announce a new device, they never release the OS for older hardware until the new device is available. So the correct answer is to expect the update in the weeks following the N4/N10 release. Hopefully it will be out within a week, but it can take longer.
Google has said they will start rolling out 4.2 from Nov 11th, 2 days before new devices release.
As like the title, I do really hope that Google Nexus 4 will be available direct from Google. Anyone have any news on this?

I'm looking forward to it too... Hopefully almost the same time as US.
I bought Nexus 7 directly from US but I think Nexus 4 is better to be bought in Malaysia as it is more essential and a must have with you all the time .
Unlike Nexus 7, if anything goes wrong with it then it we can still live with it but Nexus 4 is a phone that you will need a replacement if anything goes wrong with it.
I've some rumors that it will start selling at end of Nov but still no confirmation.
How I wish that will be true. However if we want to buy from US, we either get from grey market, if not get some one from US to buy and forward to you. I hate they have no deal policy for non US credit card...

Is there an ETA on when the Nexus 4 will be available again? desperately want this phone D:
Never. It was a limited edition of only 1337 phones made.
On a serious note, no one knows. Could be tomorrow, could be January, February, don't know. Just read up on android websites and they'll post something when they hear that it's available.

ebay...thats how I got mine...
I worry sometimes about buying brand new phones on ebay. Where's the warranty if you need it?
Dumped htc for saying an update would be released by certain time then waiting months...now with samsung they release an update in a couple of countries yet us in the UK still waiting a month later...? Why.??? Even my unlocked, unbranded note 2...!!!?????
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
I'm on the same bandwagon. Don't worry. Samsung is a lot faster with updates than HTC. So I think you've picked the right company, but the GENERAL rule of thumb is that you should buy a phone and be happy with the software it comes with, and don't expect it to be updated. Regardless, Unlocked N7100 from Germany DBT and still nothing. I bought it based on the Note 1 which ALWAYS got the updates FIRST from DBT. Now other countries have received their update and I haven't yet. Oh well. I'm still terribly happy with this phone and software! I can't say that the update will make it much better xD It's fantastic just the way it is, but I'm an update junky! haha. So just sit back and relax It'll come.

i love my GN2 but Samsung is a S**t company when it comes for updates, they never say anything what changes are made on Updates and they only do updates only in few countries which it barely sales the phone and not to the countries which they sold most
Tell me which phone manufacturer announce exactly when updates come? Moto is even worse based on ics update. When I got the phone it was mentioned all over the website promised ics update.
Then after almost a year they release a schedule for update which promises q1 2012.. End of q1 2012 came and all no update. A month later announced q2 2012. End of q2 came and gone. A month later the update finally came for me. At that time the is still many users without ics. Even today not all received their ics.
Btw the ics update made the phone laggy. Full reset removed the Laginess for a week or so before it came back. Don't tell me it's an app I instants because the only app installed then was line, whatsapp and tango. And mx player.
And this is supposed to be a ics phone. But quirks much better in gb.

In general, updates are delayed by carrier testing, so they can make sure it causes no issues on their network, but it takes even longer for unlocked/sim-free phones as they're tested on many more networks.
However I will say that if you're so adamant on getting updates ASAP you bought the wrong phone, the only phones you should look at for that are Nexus phones. Even those can have their updates significantly delayed by carrier testing though.

My point was the fact that the official update was released in a few countries about a month ago and yet nothing in the UK..? And yet Samsung has already started going on about the next update to be released in jan/feb !! We need this one first please..!!!

I don't really buy that story. For carrier phones yes but what about international nonbranded phones?

I'd imagine that Samsung are doing a pilot release to a few countries first. If no major issues are reported then they release it to everyone else a short time later (like a month or so).
Makes sense really when you think about it, IMHO anyhow.
Btw waiting for the update here in Ireland too if it makes you feel any better

Hey guys,
Had my nexus a few months now and loving it.
Also have a HTC One X+ as my work phone.
Today I went to update an app on the HTC One and it received the new Google Play store?
I would have thought that the nexus 4 would have been the first phone to receive this update.
Anyone else have it (officially)? I'm in Australia, but I wouldn't think that it matters since the One X+ received it?

Hmm my Nexus 4 just got updated to new Play Store as well. Not sure if the fact it is CM10.1 affects it or not.... Singapore here anyway...
I'm also in Australian and just checked my N4 after your post to find I got the google play update today also. Have been waiting ages for that.
Yeah? I just thought that it was strange that Google didn't update their own devices before others.
Although it could just be a whole play store update regardless of device manufacturer.
P.s- I personally think that it looks like a bit of a downgrade? Very plain

I got my update yesterday and I can't get rid of it if I install the update it just reinstalls itself.
Google have taken all the bad from the old version and enhanced it, it's now 'super' jerky instead of a little. Then all the good from the old version has been thrown out and replaced with giant icons letting you see only 4-6 apps at a time. Google never learn.
Hold on to the older version for as long as you can.

Google would never do that. If there are issues they will fix them and continue rolling it out. Play Store updates can take a long time to roll out and seemingly random (not based on hardware being used).

I'm not basing the fact on bugs or issues, just purely on the fact that it looks like a downgrade compared to the old one (old now).
The old one looked very nice, mature and pleasant on the eyes.
This new one looks like its been made for (possibly by) pre-schoolers. So simple and the complete opposite of intriguing.

I think the play store is one of things that just gets sent out for update, I don't think the nexus has any priority over other device when it comes to it.
Is this the new Google play store you all talking about? If so then I've had this for over a two weeks.

Got my update on 4/9
Nexus gets Android updates first not Play updates. With 1.5 million activations per day and all those devices carrying a Play Store, imagine how many
devices Google needs to update.
To reduce load on their servers, they update devices in batches.
