I am using a stock Nexus 7 with Android 4.2.1
I never use automatic brightness; and when I use the lowest brightness, the backlight kind of vibrates a lot.
When I increase the brightness it becomes more stable.
I have made a factory reset, and reloaded my apps and setting with my backup application, yet the problem continues. I don't remember this happening before 4.2.1, but I am not really sure.
Any idea/suggestion is appriciated.
Thanks.

I will try it, but i heard that it might reduce the performance and drain battery.
What else might there be to try?
Anyone had a similar problem?
Rma it, sounds like the back light is starting to go out I had that same problem on a phone of mine and the back light ended up going out a couple weeks after it did the whole stutter thing

I don't think it does.
How can I do that hw overlay?
Do I have to root first? because I searched the forum and I couldn't find the android preferences setting file.
i think you have the screen flickering problem
is it flickering like in this video?
maybe you should take a look

Hi all,
My Nexus7 screen will automatically dim out while watching movies through apps. It will dim until all dark and i donno way to turn the screen back. The movie is still running though with sound on but no screen. I didnt turn on auto brightness. does anyone's N7 has the same issue i am having? How may I fix it, thx

I don't know if screen flicker and screen dimming are the same thing but I encounter a similar issue whenever brightness is below 30 percent.... Other than that my Nexus is flawless besides a rare notification freeze

So, if mine is also called a screen flicker, how do I fix it?
When my N7 screen went all black out, I have to use a torch towards my N7 screen sensor to have the screen bright up again

I just got mine yesterday. Not rooted but I noticed if the screen auto turns off....sometimes it is locked up. Hitting the power button won't do a thing. Have you had this problem?

Yes, i have this problem too. Then when I have no torch beside me for the sensor, i would need to press power button for 10sec+ for a reboot. How suck it is. This is the only thing bugging me on N7

hey!
if it is the same issue as i have (screen turns off in auto brightness or manually set the brightness to minimum), i dont think it is an hardware issue.
i think the minimum background light is set wrong in the system.
also i dont think it is hardware related, because many other owner af a n7 are reporting this issue.

Hi. I have had this Nexus 4 for about a month and it has does some strange things with the graphics on the bottom bar of buttons. Please see the screenshots attached. It can happen every few minutes and as soon as I touch the screen it will revert to normal again.
Is this something that is likely to get fixed with an update or a hardware issue?
I can't find anything on the internet referring to the same problem but the sales guy in the local carphone warehouse has a nexus 4 as well and said his does the same :-/
Anybody know what is causing it.
Completely stock BTW oh and as you can see. Pressing the hardware buttons for a screenshot does not fix it. Only touching the screen.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Wow.. thats not normal! I would look into RMA'ing that sucker!
You could try using a toolkit to reflash stock to see if that helps, however you will have to unlock the bootloader, flash stock rom and then relock bootloader, then you just go into settings and do a full reset to hide the developer options then you will be stock. The toolkit I use is this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015469 and its awesome just follow the on screen prompts.
I'm quite sure that this is a software issue, since hardware issues can't be captured by screenshots obviously. I'd recommend flashing it with whatever you like and do a factory reset. You can restore all apps afterwards ofc (use Titanium Backup for example).
Best regards!

That only means that it isn't an issue with the physical screen. It could still be an issue with the GPU or other hardware, since various hardware is used to create that software image in the first place.
I have seen exactly this sort of picture posted in at least one thread before on here before, though that might be hard to find on a search.
I would also recommend reinstalling the ROM and if it still happens then it must be hardware. I strongly suspect that it is the hardware.

Thanks for all the replies
I have now disabled HW overlays and it does seem to have fixed the issue (or at least made it far better, I have not noticed it since but it has only been an hour)
I will keep in eye on it for a bit and if it lasts cone back and change the title of the thread to solved.
Thanks for all the help guys.

hmmm, and the gpu just decides to screw up down there in a perfectly aligned rectangular shape that happens to resemble the navigationbar? i think thats unlikely.
gimpor, can you play gpu accelerated games? try please.
its probably googles weird 4 layer stuff. thats why disabling hw overlays fixes it. same guy that screwed up the kernel colors that merged it into 4.2.2 btw. : P
gimpor again,
hwoverlay is not permanent, a reboot unchecks it. try this
replace persist.hwc.mdpcomp.enable=true
with debug.mdpcomp.maxlayer=3
in your build.prop
or in the worst case persist.hwc.mdpcomp.enable=false
Its much better but still not fixed. Only done it once in about 8 hours whilst playing a solitaire game. I will try the other suggestions when I have decoded them into English :-/
I have not found any games that don't work yet, bad piggies etc. Seem to work okay. Would they be GPU accelerated?
Once again thanks for the assistance with this, it does get rather annoying when you show someone your phone and it's all garbled.
It still does this though :-/

I haven't found out anything further and it's still doing it but not as bad. It doesn't seem to happen to every stock phone so I'm guessing its hardware related, or at least something in software not playing well with this specific hardware. Mine is a 212 so they may have changed something on the later ones. I got it from Carphone warehouse on the UK as they were the only ones with stock. I had it changed already as the first one I got was DOA. I think it's going to have to go back if I can't get it fixed soon.

Guys. Sorry for kinda hijacking this thread but can anyone tell me what this is? It happens every time retract the keyboard and has been happening since first boot. I flashed factory IMG, factory reset and even formatted my phone. For some reason nothing. Again, i am just asking help. Thanks!
I have a completely stock, unrooted Nexus 4 that I received 2/4/13. I've been having some strange display hiccups pretty much since I got it, and they seem to occur on any part of the screen. Sometimes it will occur as a square in the upper left section of the screen, other times it will be a mess of static at the bottom. Sometimes text entry will either turn all black, or it will disappear altogether. In some of the screen shots, you will notice that I am using an app called Screen Filter to decrease screen brightness. However, the display glitch occurs when I am not using Screen Filter as well. I was wondering if anyone else was having these problems? I'm considering RMAing my phone for a new one.

Should "hardware overlays" be disabled and "force gpu rendering" be enabled? Do all these measures indicate that the graphic glitches are hardware problems?

I'm not sure what the issue was hardware/software-wise. I just sent the original phone back, as I received the RMA last Monday. It seems to be working well overall. Good luck with your phone.

It's the Tegra smart dimming causing the flickering. Apps like Franco Kernel Updater or Tegra Prism can toggle this on or off. Might be better to manually toggle it by editing a file if you want to avoid paying for an app, but I don't know it to hand.

Smart dimmer is NOT the problem, why do people perpetuate this nonsense... It is some interaction between the wifi and Backlight and is only really visible when wifi signal is low, background is white, and in the dark or near. Meh.

Turn up the backlight a little, I personally don't even notice it much anymore.
I fixed it by lifting the antenna ground with a piece of scotch tape. 7 months and still going strong.

I had this problem. It was very common around the time the nexus 7 was released.
From what I remember, it's a hardware issue with low WiFi signal interfering with the backlight, as someone above said.
Your options as I recall are to crack it open and attempt fixing yourself, voiding your warranty. Or just send it off. I sent mine off and received a new replacement. It was obviously a common complaint because they didn't even enquire further after I briefly described the problem.
Send it off, save yourself the headache of a hack job gone wrong.

Is it easy to open and fix ?
Found something wierd with developer options on this build. Not sure if I should post this in q&a or here, but general gets more traffic so.
Anyways I always disable animations fully when I turn on dev options. I have noticed that they do not stay set. The middle option, switches back to one. Not after a reboot, just at some point during sleep or maybe when a certain app or routine gets run. Not sure. Might be a setting that I have on interfering with my settings. Anyone else notice this?
I will probably reset and go through the setup again bit by bit to see what's causing this. Very noticeable when normally nothing but quickness happens between apps, then the stock animations start showing up randomly. Thx
