Some settings changed by a ghost.... - Galaxy S III General

Hi,
I have 2 settings that keep turning off and I can't find what app does that. Maybe someone has experienced this before....
1. In "SOUND", the "Sound & Vibration" setting keeps being unchecked
2. In "DEVELOPPER OPTIONS", the "Stay Awake" settings being turning off also
I don't have any battery saver apps installed, so that's not that. I do not use the "Power Saving" feature either.
thnx

This is the fix you need
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9We2XsVZfc&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Funny..... but not helping!
Plus, they're like from the 80s so I doubt they know anything about smartphones

What Rom are you on? Any mods? My keep awake doesn't persist through a reboot either, but sounds and vibration does

see my signature.
Reboot is not the issue, it actually sticks after a reboot, it just goes off several times during the day after I turn it back on. Really annoying...... Some app must do it.....

Questions go in the QA section, not general

ok sorry, dunno how to move it there though

Wifi goes off when screen times out

Hi
I have an HTC Desire HD
I have changed a setting somewhere (i remember doing it) which switches off wifi when the screen times out. I did it on purpose at the time thinking it would come on again when the screen was unlocked. Wrong!
The problem is I now can't find or remember the exact setting I changed!
Could be powersaving, wifi, screen lock or any other non-obvious setting!
I have tried everything I can think off. At the moment, everytime the screen goes off, so does wifi. Very annoying
I would really appreciate any help
Mark
I wasn't aware there was an option for this is froyo! Unless you're referring to the WiFi sleep policy? Try menu > advanced when in WiFi settings but I think this only allows you to determine the time out period, not the condition (ie the screen going off)... however, there are apps that will allow you to do this. Are you sure you haven't installed something that's causing this?
Go to wifi and press menu. Its under advanced settings.
Hi
Thanks for your tips. Found it!!
It wasn't in the Wifi, or screenlock settings (I had looked at everything on those!!)
I remembered that had installed the Battery Booster app and then messed with the Battery Teak settings to turn off wifi on screenlock
Actually a handy app, if you set it up properly, which I hadn't!!
Thanks once again for the prompt
Mark
don't forget after change setting hit menu button again to save the change lol

[SOLUTION] Display Never Turns Off While Charging

I tried to find a solution for my problem, but I couldn't find any.
Everytime I plug in my phone for charging the display turns on and stays on, same thing happens when I disconnect my phone from the charger. The screen in GingerBread (JVQ) doesn't timeout like it timed out in Froyo/Eclair. This could be potentially a huge problem for your screen. You could get a "burn-in" effect if you get a power outtage while charging and you're asleep/away.
Thankfully there's Tasker (It's a paid app!).
With Tasker you can turn off your screen while you connect/disconnect your phone from your charger.
Here is how I set it up:
Add Profile and name it: TurnOffDisplayOnCharging
Add State-->Power-->I selected only AC
Add Enter Task: Add Tasker-->Wait-->5 seconds and then Add Display-->System Lock (You will need to add Tasker to your device administrators.).
Add Exit Task: Do the same like you did for your Enter Task above.
Of course you don't need to have both Tasks, you could only have an Enter Task or only an Exit Task, it's up to you.
You can also change the timeout/wait time or add any other setting if you like.
Solution 2 (free solution!):
WakeLocker for Galaxy S.
I've uninstalled the app and restarted my phone and the settings stayed! Yay!
Timeout is the same what you have set for "Screen timeout" under Settings-->Display.
I hope this thread was helpful!
display ALWAYS turns off while charging
unless you use modification that enables such setting
plus you must activate such setting to have 'screen steaying on when pluged in'

Guess Juwe's ROM has such setting enabled.
as youve mentioned such setting might lead to burining screen pisxels
i think if juwe woiuld activate such settign he would put some information about this in huge red letters

So... you're saying there's something else keeping my display turned on after I connect/disconnect my phone from the charger? An app maybe, or some hidden setting?
And, NO, I don't have "Stay awake" option in Settings-->Applications-->Development, only "USB debugging" and "Allow mock locations".
yup something is wrong with your phone, never had such issue
and the only way i know to make display always on is this setting
I just did a re-search on Google for my problem and found your thread (it's even in your signature).
And one of the features for Stock+ is:
+ Enabled stay awake for ac and usb in settings/applications/development
Also found some other people with different roms have this same problem.
Guess this solution might be a good quick fix, instead of re-flashing/searching for other suitable roms.
as for stock+ look at my signature
as for the bug, as i said never hadsuch issue so realy hard to tell what can cause it
but that is not how properly working phone is behaving for sure
and not a problem of stock firmware
As much as strange this will sound.. this is not a bug, it's a feature...
Juwe has it implemented on his rom, as it is also in some other custom roms. I personally can't think of a proper use for this, but, trust me it's a feature. In Juwe and the other roms it is implemented as a setting somewhere in the settings(normally in 'Settings-->Applications-->Development' and sometimes in the display section). But it can also be enabled, if supported by rom (in stock it's not) , when using either SGS Tools, Nitranity or Spare Parts.. can't remember which one exactly sorry. try to remember if you used any kind of tool app to mess around
but leaving it ON as a default is stupid - as said it will 'burn out' your phone display
it MUST be optional - and information about this should be in big red text
Well, $omator , I am a big fan of yours, really! AND your are ABSOLUTELY, TOTALLY, UNDOUBTEDLY RIGHT, but even so that is not the case I know it for a reason because I played a lot with my SGS, since I got it. I have seen this in settings and availability to be enabled through an app.
Really hope you fix your problem, yani2000, shame to burn out accidentally the display. Until you resolve your issue you might want to try charging the phone while it's shut off and see if display still turns on. If not this a temporary fix
moegrave suggested an app for this solution and I've found it!
WakeLocker for Galaxy S (free app on the market!).
Guess there's an app for every trouble GalaxyS has.
EDIT: I've uninstalled the app and restarted my phone and the settings stayed! Yay!
Timeout is the same what you have set for "Screen timeout" under Settings-->Display.
@$omator:
This becomes a problem only if there's a power outtage or somehow your phone gets disconnected from the charger and you're away or asleep.
The phone doesn't wake up and stays on after 100% charge and eats the battery (like some have reported in other various threads).
So this is not such a big deal, but could be dangerous for your screen (burn-in effect) if it actually happens.
glad to be of assistance, yani2000
and guess there ARE apps for everything nowadays
thanks you so muchh you have solved my biggest problem
i have a custom rom on my sgs ii and i had this problem
thanks

How to prevent locking atrix during watching movie

Hi there,
While I watch a movie on TV via multimedia dock, my atrix keeps locking up (at least three times per movie). When it happens, I unlock the screen and resume the movie which is very annoying.
Although I set up "Screen timeout" to "Never timeout", it keeps happening. Am I missing something here???
Thanks very much for your help in advance!
Try the "screenon" widget in the market just to make sure on the timeout issue.
As for the lock screen itself, the ever popular "no lock" widget is free and gets rid of the annoying lock screen...
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
I tried that app and it never worked. What I found is that if I change the screen lock setting to "never timeout", the screen does not get locked as long as the phone is not on multimedia dock. Does anyone have this issue?
That's a strange one. Mine never used to lock when it was on the dock.
Is your dock plugged in so your atrix is charging? If not, maybe it's some power saving mode making it shut off?
Otherwise, maybe something in the ROM you're running.
Yeah, I know. It looks like nobody has this problem. Yes, the dock is plugged in and is being charged. I found "Stay awake (Screen will never sleep while charging)" option under Developement the other day. I will check that option and see if it resolves the problem. Right now, I have to get up every 30 minutes and move the mouse around on Webtop Mode window on my TV during a movie. This is very annoying.
I have Bell's stock rom: 45.2.17.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA (2.3.4). My phone is unlcocked (on Rogers) and rooted.
in settings, you need to turn off the auto lock

I'm taking a wild guess and saying it's probably an app or something causing you grief. I've never heard of anyone else having this issue that anyone was able to replicate.
Maybe you want to look at your apps and see if you have any that might cause that kind of behaviour. Try removing them and see if it fixes your issue, if not, move on to the next app.
Or if you're really fed up, you can always try a factory reset and start from scratch.
I have the same problem on mine.
I think I found the problem. It has to do with the Security Lock and the Fingerprint scanner. Once fingerprints are entered the "Security Lock Timer" becomes disabled. Mine was set to 20 minutes. I reset it to "When display is off"
Settings->Location & Security
If "Security Lock Timer" is greyed out, you'll have to clear out your fingerprints and do the setup again.
->Change Screen Lock
Select None.
Select "Clear Stored Fingerprints"
Go back into "Change Screen Lock"
Select PIN and enter a pin.
It'll dump you back out to "Location & security"
Security lock timer should now be enabled.
Select "When display is off"
Go back into "Change screen lock" and set up your fingerprint scanner again.
See if that fixes the problem.
***EDIT*** Didn't work. Mine still engages a lock after about 20 minutes.
Setting screen lock to "None" didn't help either. Still times out in about 20 minutes (like a screensaver).
I found the solution!!!
The problem was the screen saver settings in WebTop mode. The other day, I saw a setting icon on WebTop mode and found that the screen saver was set to 30 minutes. I chaged it to 3 hours and now I can watch a movie without getting up every 30 minutes. Yeah!!!
Oh that's cool. I didn't know that.
Thanks

BT keeps turning off

For the past few days, my BT setting keeps turning itself off every few hours. Once it happens, it then continues to turn itself off immediately each time I re-enable it. After an hour or so, it recovers and lets me turn it back on (until the next time a few hours later).
The phone is completely stock (APK1), never rooted, no 3rd-party power-saving, task-managing, or security apps ever installed, no power-saving modes turned on. It does not help to clear the system cache or the Bluetooth Share cache. Closing all open apps does not help. Rebooting sometimes helps temporarily, sometimes not even temporarily. I haven't seen the problem when I reboot in Safe Mode, so either it's caused by an app (I have hundreds), or else I just didn't leave it in Safe Mode for long enough for the problem to reappear. I have not recently installed any apps or made any settings changes. I've searched online and come across many suggestions but none are applicable and successful here.
Is there a system log somewhere that would tell me what is turning off the BT setting?

Wouldn't that delete all my WiFi passwords? I find several online mentions of people who unsuccessfully tried Reset Networks to solve BT problems, and no mentions of it being successful.

Try one more thing : Settings-> Applications-> in right top corner you have 3 dots, press and choose Show System Apps
scroll to Bluetooth share , click on it then click on Storage and Clear Data. go back and do same with Bluetooth Test.
Thanks, but that didn't help either. I found the culprit, though: the Walgreens app. When I force-stop it and then turn on BT, BT stays on. As soon as I start the app again, BT turns off. And I now see many other user reports of this problem, going back a couple of months.
It's annoying that without the user's knowledge or consent, Android gives an app unnecessary permission to turn BT off. What's worse is that there's no easy way to identify who turned it off.

There is an app in the store called App Brain Ad Detector.
After you install it you can scan all your installed apps and it will break down all permissions given to each app, show which ad network, etc. It is very useful!
Also after it is installed when you install a new app it will report if it does things not normal.. IE it would probably have caught that BT permission!

iHeartRadio stops playing

Ok I have googled and googled this to find all kinds of people having the same problem. iHeartRadio will play untill screen shuts down then will play for a few then stops playing. So I have looked at wifi settings is set to always. Battery saver is off. Here is one thing I have noticed if I use the aux cable it works fine. I have deleted app and data and reinstalled but still
The same. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
PS also swapped ROMs to.

Hello...
Maybe go in iHeartRadio settings. Isn't there an option to select "keep app on when screen goes off" or something similar?
Have you tried to unoptimize it? Doze is killing it maybe?
Go in Settings > Battery > three dot menu tap "battery optimization"
On the drop down menu, choose all apps. Tap on iHeartRadio and select: "Don"t optimize".
Hoping it will save your issue...
Cheers...
Like 5.1 says, unoptimize it in the battery settings and then your fine. You have to do that with Google music as well.
I'm having the same issue. It is listed as not optimized.
Amazon Music used to do this on my Nexus 5, but now on the 6P it decided the Iheartradio app will do it instead. The Nexus 5 issue also persisted across ROMs and factory resets.
Maybe it's an app issue that only affects a few people with very specific settings or something?
This is far from an ideal solution but if turning off battery optimization doesn't fix the problem there are apps in the Play Store that keep the screen on when you are using specific apps. You could choose to leave the screen on when using iHeartRadio.
I have read a few posts about Gmail notifications not going through even after turning "optimization off" for the app. And people reporting that doze affects other parameters at the same time that cause notification trouble.
Maybe this case can be assimilated, but in another way.
You can try Killing doze completely and see how iHeartRadio behaves. Open a command prompt and issue:
adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable
It should return something like:
Deep idle mode disabled
Light idle mode disabled
Check iHeartRadio behavior after that. If it fixed the issue, you know that doze may be the culprit or maybe the app developer didn't implement a new policy for doze and/or when screen turns off.
You can revert the ADB shell command with either:
adb shell dumpsys deviceidle enable
Or with a reboot.
I'd send iHeartRadio developer an email to let them know your issue. If other users already reported it and if they are working on a fix...
Good luck... :good:
