Gripes with the SIII Mini - Galaxy S III Mini General

Well, I love this phone and I have been looking for something to replace my Desire S and nothing matched what I was after until the Mini came out!
Anyways, I have two gripes with the phone.
Firstly the PPI...why the hell give it such a low ppi compared to other phones and also considering the screen size. The Galaxy Ace 2 has more, so did my Desire S and when I compared it to my Desire S you could clearly see the lack of pixel density. A real shame, as that's the ONLY main feature I was let down by. With it being a S3 'Mini' you would have thought it would be a crisper screen.
Secondly is the power button during screen lock.
You can put the screen on with the power button, but hold and press again while on lock screen and it gives you the restart/power off options....
Is there away to stop that?

Number one: Blame pentile display
Number two: feature of almost all phones

Must be because the power button is on the side, so gets pressed more easily!
The screen PPI is still a let down, just adding 20 more pixels per inch would have sorted it

Considering getting this phone..

So I have a Motorola Atrix 4G right now. My problem with it is the locked bootloader. With this, it might as well not be dual core because it barely taps into that potential. It also doesn't seem to utilize the 4G network on At&t?? Anyhoo, for whatever reason, I'm interested in this phone. I just have a few questions...
How much can I buy it off contract? And where can I buy it at? I don't even see it on the ATT website yet, but it seems it's in fact been released? Maybe I'm crazy but I thought it was on ATT.
Is the screen really as bad as people say? It seems like it has a good size, but for that size the res. might be small...my Atrix has qHD and it actually is quite nice.
What's with the buttons on the bottom? Only menu and back? What does that center button do?
Any awesome custom kernels/ROMs yet? If not, is there reason to believe there will be in due time? Seems like a pretty dev friendly phone...
Thanks for the help guys! I could probably sell my Atrix for around $300 which would go towards this phone off contract, if I decide it's worth it.
cant answer all questions, but there is no better screen out there, your Atrix is not real qHD because of Pentile, the center button is Home, yes there is some custom ROMs and kernels if you check the development section
Sent from my Galaxy S2 using Tapatalk
the gs2 is not currently released in the US yet (so it is not technically on At&t), but since it is compatible with at&t bands some are importing it from the UK and then using it on att
Ahhh I see. That makes sense now. I wonder when it will be coming out then..
So if the center button is home, there's no search button? Seems kind of unnecessary to lay it out like that, but definitely not the worst thing ever lol.
Anyway, can you tell me more about the Pentile thing making the Atrix not really qHD?
I would have preferred the standard 4 softbutton arrangement. While I never used the search button to search I did use it to long press into quick settings. I also dont like that its touch, touch, touch, oops, press, touch touch press. Kinda screws with the flow. To say nothing of the fact that the real estate goes wasted and real estate on a smart phone is precious. This is a minor quibble and you get used to it but I wish these people would stop trying to reinvent the wheel and go with what works.

The home button is not bad. In fact it's nice that it's hardware so it can wake the device.
I've not once had an issue not remembering the press it.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
One positive thing that comes with a hardware home-button is that it's much harder to press it accidentally, which can be an annoyance if it's capacitive.
Having the other buttons being capacitive isn't really an issue since the most annoying action when you're doing something is being thrown back to the homescreen.
Search is on long-press of the menu-button btw and a double press of the home-buttton brings up voice search.
What it means that it has a Pentile Matrix layout is that it has fewer subpixels than a traditional layout.
Traditionally on lcd-screens one pixel contains a red green and blue sub-pixel and is laid out like this horisontally:
RGBRGB... etc
Pentile matrix displays are either like this:
RGBGRGBG... etc
or more recently (in the Atrix):
RGBWRGBW
What a pentile subpixel layout does is cutting the sub-pixel count by 1/3 while aiming to keep the same perceived resolution. In the display on the Atrix that is introducing a white-subpixel the aim is to offer brighter displays while using less power.
Thanks for all the replies guys! And yeah I hadn't even thought about the lack of a button to use as a shortcut now. On my Atrix I have long-press search opening the Quickdesk app. But I suppose I could have double tap home do that instead? And I had no idea about the Atrix screen being like that. So basically if I like this screen, there's no reason I shouldn't like a GSII screen just as much?
Hmmm I'm kind of liking the sound of this phone... It seems like it'll probably be around $600 to $700 off contract, which is pretty steep. Especially considering I might only be able to sell this Atrix for about $200 MAYBE 300..

Super amoled plus display is Amazing :) :) :) :) :)

Ive had so many phones over the past year it unbelievable but the screen on the galaxy s2 is so much better than what they mention in reviews. Theres no friggin way this comes second to the iphone retina display, Resolution isnt everything.
I took a picture in the dark the other day without the flash by mistake so when i clicked to preview the image i though for a moment that my screen had turned of because of how true the blacks were. . Im sticking to Samsung for as long as they make phones because i am impressed with what they make, just a shame really that apple are having there products banned in some country's

Super AMOLED, not Super AMOLED Plus.
Quite a big difference, actually.
This display remindes me of old ferrari engines. The sound and the rev fantastic, a pleasure to drive, but some of them had early problems and the lifetime where actually quite low compared to others.
This display has great things, vivid colors, contrast and real blacks, the viewing angle... but some have yellowish tint or blue, strange paterns on grey or similar colours, and if you go and see the displays of S2 exposed on stores that stay on during days you can see the display doesnt live long withou shadows and yellow spots, and the known ghost problem...
Well, I don't experience any of these yet. Read that color tint was software problem. Anyway, my display needs to last 1-2 years max. After that I will be using new device.

The colour tint isn't a software problem, but it can be "masked" by software so that it's not noticeable. Either way though, you're right. It is a great screen and other than resolution I can't see anything better about. It'll last me my contract for sure.
Lovely display. Better than anything out there. So happy to be an owner of S-AMOLED Plus.
I come from HTC Desire Z with Super LCD Plus screen. We used to compare it to my friend's iPhone 4 and found them to perform very close, with Desire Z having slightly richer colors.
But this Super Amoled Plus display is out of this world!

Too big for me... I like how the 4.3" size fits perfect in my hand and let me do things. Adding 1inch makes the phone really big... I saw a review and the guy could barely hold it in his hand.
When I take a black photo and show it on the phone in the dark I can see the screen light up a little. Is this how it is supposed to be or is it just my phone?

Yes it's not small, but some time ago I thought SGS2 is too big and I bought HTC Desire Z instead, yet I'm using SGS2 now ;-) Second - I have seen people holding the new Galaxy Tab 7.7 in one hand. I do realize Note is big, but it is still pocketable, while any other tab would not be. All my keys, money, IDs and devices need to fit in my pockets or belt case. That way I always have important stuff on me, no need for any bags which I could forget.
And because I rarely make any phone calls, using device mainly for web browsing or other things, I keep thinking about Galaxy Note

When you take a picture that is too dark, camera tries to adjust the brightness of the picture and add more exposure/brightness. If the picture is really black, your gs2 will show real black. The only phone display in the world that shows real black.

I guess I have big hands, I can easily hold and operate S2 with either hand. So I guess I can probably do the same with Note, albeit a bit awkwardly.
Also it's not true black. Make a black pic with photoshop, load it on your screen and go to a dark room, and you'll see.

Download "Screen test" from market. There is a pure black picture to check dead/stuck pixels. On my screen in complete darkness it is so perfectly black that i cant see my phone.
Super Amoled Plus is indeed amazing with its vibrant colours and contrast. What's more amazing is that at 4.3 inches it's really the perfect size (at least for me) as it is the maximum screen size where you can hold the phone nice and easy with one hand.

6.3" screen on the Note 3!? Some thoughts and perspectives:

Personally, after having done a little number crunching, I don't think it's really all too far fetched to imagine the Note 3 having a 6.3" screen, assuming certain things happen. Here's my thinking:
The physical dimensions of the current Note 2 (not the screen) are 151mm tall by 80.5mm wide, which yields a hypotenuse of ~173.3mm.
A ~6.3" (160mm diag) 16:9 ratio screen would be about 139.5mm tall by ~78.4mm wide, which can just about squeeze into the current body's form factor, if you remove the physical buttons and go with a ~1mm bezel on the sides (compared to the current ~5.7mm bezel).
A ~1mm bezel is insane, and honestly I doubt it's a realistic expectation. However, if the Note 3 returns to the original Note's width of ~83mm, that would make room for a ~2.3mm bezel on a 6.3" screen. That's still insanely thin, but maybe just about doable.
Now, here's another thing to consider: Screen Resolution.
As it currently stands, it's much easier to make a higher resolution LCD display than an AMOLED display (which is why our 5.55" AMOLED displays are only 720p when there are 5" 1080p LCD's). It's currently difficult for AMOLED to match those levels of pixel density before running into quality issues like we've seen in previous AMOLED generations. That's to be expected; AMOLED technology is still relatively new compared to LCD, so we're still working on perfecting it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we've yet seen an RGB (not PenTile) AMOLED display break the 300ppi barrier yet. So far, the Note 2's display has the highest RGB pixel density that we've ever seen yet (again, the key here is RGB, not PenTile).
If the Note 3 has a 6.3" screen, and if indeed it's going to be 1080p, then that would mean a pixel density of ~350ppi. I believe that jumping from the current ~265ppi (RGB) to ~350ppi (RBG) is incredibly significant, and possibly unrealistic actually... So this, to me, suggests one of two likely possibilities:
A.) A 6.3" 1080p PenTile display.
or
B.) An RGB (using the current sub-pixel layout in the Note 2) display, but at lower than 1080p resolution; perhaps something like 1600x900 instead.
Option B would yield a ~291ppi density, and seems like a realistic and reasonable improvement from the current generation.
Either option is seems like a reasonable possibility, however, in my personal opinion, I would bet that the 1080p PenTile option seems more likely.
So, to sum everything up, here's what I would predict for the Note 3 for dimensions and screen:
Chassis:
151 - 155 mm Height
83 - 85 mm Width
8 - 10 mm Depth
Buttonless/Full touch screen design
Screen:
6.3" (160mm) Diagonal, 16:9
1080p PenTile SAMOLED (More likely)
or
1600x900 RGB SAMOLED (Less likely)
maybe
1080p RGB SAMOLED (Least likely, but who knows!)
I know a lot of this may have been boring, but I hope it was informative, and perhaps brings some more clarity to the rumors that have been floating around.
Let me know your thoughts!
My thoughts are there is already a thread about this.

i would really want a non pentile screen and a 1080p screen...
Nice thorough post.
I personally won't buy a larger form factor. So, whatever the max screen size is within the current physical dimension is what it should be.
If the form factor goes larger I might as well buy a 7" tablet.
Most said that the Note 2 size was too large.
After, was considered a normal phone size for them.
Note 3, might have the same procedure.
My thoughts are that if it actually turns out to be 6.3" then they better call it 'Galaxy tab mini'
The note 2's screen at first was a bit of a handful but I've gotten used to it now I've had it for a few months but 6.3".....that's a bit over the top in my opinion.

If the display isn't downgrade from rgb, and is close to 6inches without much dimensions bigger then i will upgrade to it.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
The problem with a 6.3" device, IMO, would be:
Should one hold it like a phone (one-handed) or like a tablet (two-handed)?
I guess the design of the device should hold the answer (bevel and of course dimensions).
I believe this is yet again a wait-and-see moment for Samsung. When the original Note was launched, everyone had their comments. But the sales proved, one way or another, that "phablet" is feasible. 5.3" isn't really too big! Now we stretched it to 5.5" and the sales are now even stronger! So if they can find a way to make the user experience feasible for a 6.3" phone-tablet hybrid (or whatever marketing they employ for that device), then who's to say now that it's good or not?
I'm happy with my 5.5" Note II. If the Note III proves to be successful at 6.3", that's a nice feat. But I'm sticking to my Note II (for the next two years!)
I'd prefer if Samsung stuck with physical buttons as soft keys on screen take up a lot of real estate. It would be a waste to have a large screen that has a 1/2" row permanently used by buttons.
Not to mention that soft keys get in the way of gaming and are often inadvertently pressed.

I respectfully disagree. Whereas the other thread talking about the Note III merely links to an outside source regarding potential screen size, and then asks the simple "Will you buy it?" question, my thread here, though on a related topic, goes into much greater detail behind the speculations for the Note III, and encourages a much broader discussion about the screen technology in particular.
If Samsung does go with a 6.3" screen design for the Note III, I hope that they finally stop using the Phone UI across the whole platform and instead go with something more like the Phablet UI (like on the Nexus 7). Maybe even incorporate certain PA features like per-app-density and per-app-layout etc.
Gof fig they would want to make it bigger. :silly: I like the 5.5 and would love to see them work bettering the guts of the phone. More power!!!!!!!!!

I like idea of a bigger screen, but remember the Note 1 was uncomfortable to hold (in one hand) for me. Although the Note 2 was only slightly narrower it was a massive difference and I have never had issues holding it in one hand. The slight curvature change also helped here. 6" might be my comfort limit
No thanks

Firstly IMHO I think they would keep their button layout. They are trying to make their product lineup using standard elements.
Secondly, I doubt that they would go back to pentile AMOLED. they have faced too much heat with that piece of tech. And also doing 1080p on a non-pentile AMOLED is way tough for a new tech like it is. So lower res is the way they'll go.
Other than that I agree with your predictions.
The phone is already too big for most people.. would be crazy if they make the phone any bigger.

S4 front screen alignment issue (with photo)

Hi,
I love my S4 (apart from it being a little laggy for a supposedly fast phone..)
Anyway does anyone else have an issue where the front panel cover under the glass is not correctly aligned? Mine seems to be pushed to the right and slightly downwards. I took a photo to show the issue. Anyone else's like this?
Also the home button is already starting to get loose and not feel as firm and solid as when it was new (only a month old!). The left hand side of the button has some movement where I can push it down a little and it clicks/pops, I then have to push it further down to do the actual button click. If I push the button down fairly hard it seems to fix the issue for about a minute or two and the button feels ok, but then it comes back to how it was.

A defect rate of 2-5% is acceptable in electronic devices. That means some are going to get out with defects. And that applies to all manufacturers not just Samsung. The mis-alignment is pretty negligible and I doubt 99% of phone buyers who aren't enthusiasts (or anal retentive) would have even have noticed. OP, you're obviously outside your remorse/exchange period. How long have you owned the phone before you noticed?
The quality control on the S4 is TERRIBLE! Samsung have only $$$ on their mind with the S4 I'm afraid.
It was rushed to market and didn't go through proper QC, in my opinion.
I have had 6 replacements, YES 6!
Phone 1: 2 grey lines running through screen.
Phone 2: same issue but a bit better and in a different place.
Phone 3: Pink tint on bottom half of screen.
Phone 4: Front camera, LED and sensors totally misaligned in casing. It was so bad the LED and front camera were cut off.
Phone 5: Pink tint on top of phone.
And finally my current handset: Broken power button out of the box, green tint down left side of screen and also the same 2 grey lines on low brightness. Here's a photo of my current S4 with the green tint and horrible screen in low light.
http://db.tt/JKLs7sdN
I'm off for a refund at the weekend.
So after 6 Galaxy S4s ALL with problems I can safely say the QC is appalling!

Actually, there have been pretty few complaints compared to how many have been sold. This year Samsung's launch issues were mostly s/w related and at least anecdotally the SGS4's got less build quality issues than the SGS3 did when it launched. And I'm not talking about one person's experience with both phones which have sold in the millions. HTC on the other hand had less s/w issues this year but a ton of build quality issues.

I'm on my third phone.
Phone 1: vertical lines
Phone 2: pink tint at bottom
Phone 3: pink tint at top
I've decided to just keep mine. There's no guarantee I will get a perfect screen and I might just get a worse screen.
After a while you get used to the tint and not notice it

That's about a tiny screen gap on HTC One. What about the HUGE gap between bezel and screen near the power button that loads of S4s had?
I don't know anyone that hasn't had to take their S4 back for a replacement handset. Granted I only know 3 people including myself with S4s, but that's pretty bad.
Neither of my friends have a perfect phone, one has pink tint on screen and the other has grey stripes. But unlike myself they have just settled on it and are keeping the ones they have.
I've had 100% failure rate on my S4s and I've had 6, I feel that the quality control is terrible. I've yet to see an S4 with a perfect display.
I think the S4 was rushed to market and made cheaply, simple.
And don't even get me started on their failure of the Octa core processor.
I've always been very loyal to Samsung and really impressed with their products, I own a lot, including white ware and home theatre etc.
I just feel really let down with my S4 experience and my next cell phone and probably TV will both be Sony.
Honestly I tried to avoid to buy phone from samsung. I have their tablet and TV and they are all crap.
I choose S4 is just because it has biggest screen size.
All such purple tint is OK with me. But I feel so regret for the sound from speaker.
I didn't own htc one. I believe the sound must be a lot better.

I'm off for a refund at the weekend.
So after 6 Galaxy S4s ALL with problems I can safely say the QC is appalling!
I've had every Galaxy handset since S1 and never had problems. So I'm not just being fussy. Im never buying a Samsung Phone again

My Note 3 thoughts coming from a Note 2

Hello my name is Steven! I recently bought a Note 3 around a week ago. Before this I had a Galaxy Note 2 i317. Im just gonna get straight forward with spme things
So the first thing I noticed is how the back feels. The black feels more like leather "its plastic" and little bit more grippy then the white one....(but the white one feels like plastic...blah) Then theirs that weight it's much lighter then Note 2. And the Note 3 is slightly narrower. So just all of this is a great plus. It simply feels better to hold
Screen. .....This screen is just jaw dropping the pixel density is extremely high the whites look white it's amazing. On the note 2 the whites just looked a little blue to me but that's just all changed with the note 3 the screen is crisp the colors are beautiful and and slightly saturated (but not as bad as the note 2) but I like that. Also the brightness is much higher you can easily read or play it outside.
Camera. The camera is just damn good too and the screen helps a lot to here's some pic I took decide for your self there's 1280-720 slow motion video that's takes 1/2 1/4 1/8 of video at 120fps. Also it records 60FPS ( optional) and it looks crazy good and all the other options for sences ect.
Hardware. The power buttion and volume buttons are the same just as clicky. The volume buttons are slighty higher then before "it might affect some people with small hangs". The home button has more of click. Think of the silver bar around the note 2 button and have those together to make a button it self so your not pressing down into the sliver bar. So this makes a bigger more stable button that clicks way better. The pen can be put in ether way. Its like a pen that someone sat on lol its flat on top and bottem. The tip is rubber yay! The pen also works with the capacitive buttons double yay!
Battery. When I heard the battery was only 100mah bigger then the Note 2 I thought holy crap the battery is gonna suck.. I was wrong just becayse its more powerfull and it has a higher res display the battery life is about the same I get roughly 4-5 not bad
So the choice is yours are you getting a Note 3? Let me know! Got any questions? Let me know!
My name is Steven and I am very happy I bought this phone
Welcome to the Note 3 forums! I came from an S4. I was gonna jump to an iPhone cause I hated my S4. But I'm so happy I didn't. I'm a happy customer
