I'm running CM 7.2.0 with faux's 1GHz 0.2.4 kernel underclocked to 912 MHz (though I've had this with all CM roms and kernels) and after more than a minute of screen time my Atrix's CPU tends to exceed 50 degrees Celsius while the battery gets to around 40 degrees Celsius (this is recorded using setCPU). This happens most with apps like BaconReader or Facebook but has happened with others too.
I refuse to play games on my phone because it seems to nearly overheat while I'm playing any game.
When the phone starts to get hot, the battery drains faster (like 1% every 2-3 minutes).
Is there something I can do to fix this, or is this a common problem that I shouldn't mind?
Has anyone else experienced similar temperature issues?
Indeed my friend, its the Tegra 2 chipset, in fact, most of nVidia hardware tend to overheat, including Tegra 3 and PC/Laptops Video Hardware.

Never had an overheating problem without a rogue app on my Atrix. Get BetterBatteryStats and CpuSpy and see what's keeping your phone awake/running.
Crap phone, nothing you can do about it.

Get a life.
Nothing wrong with our phones except moto's traditional neglect.
OP, try going back to stock. I find I've got heat issues with custom kernels too..

Probably you have some rogue apps running in the background. You could try the GSAM battery monitor. It shows which app using the most battery and waking your phone.
It is getting hot because it is under a load. Not the phones fault. It is something you added. I had a "bad" app that looped and kept trying to write to cache. I couldn't figure it out till I used logcat. This phone still kicks ass, even if it does have Tegra II.
Also, BetterBatteryStats is free to xda users.

I would look into an kernal change if nothing else works. This has helped in the past for me

i know exactly what you're talking about, i jumped around all them roms based off of CM7 and CM9, tried different kernels, I did like Clemsyn's 1.0GHz enhanced kernel. In the end, try the rom in my sig, its based off CM7.2 stable, i **** you not my friend, first time ever I have enjoyed more than 24 hours of phone use on a single battery charge, phone never gets anywhere remotely close to being as hot as it used to, something about this build, i dont know but my battery lasts now and phone doesn't cook in my pocket after a phone call, check out log i have of how much battery life I got from 1 full charge
try flashing Jug's battery fix through CWM, it slows down the drain of the battery to a noticeable level where you can see it really does work and helps keep the battery from being pissed away after 2 phone calls
This is happening to me as well and only with this Rom have I had this issue. I guess I'll try changing roms and see if that fixes things.
i am using epsilon project v5 and problem solved
remember to fix permission

This night, I was playing Beach Buggy Blitz and suddently, I began to have graphics glitches. The screen turned kind of violet tinted and was teared apart at the bottom but the game was still playing fine without crashing. So I quit the game and the same problems were present in the Android home screens. Even a complete shutdown and reboot did not had any effect. I thought that my N7 was broken for good.
But, then the screen began flickering between the good and the bad states and finally settled with the normal colors. The N7 never froze while the display was corrupted.
When this occured, I was playing with my N7 inside a leather folio case and I could sense the heat through the case. I then changed the case for a hard shell one with a plastic back and the issue returned after playing a little longer than with the leather case. I finally tried without any case and the problem did not appear although I played for a little less longer.
I had the graphics settings in BBB maxed out and this being a Tegra 3 optimized game, I wonder if this isn't the worst case scenario for the N7 when inside a closed case with a game that sollicit heavily the graphics portion of the ARM chip.
Anyone had similar overheating issues? Should I (again) think about RMAing my tablet or is this just an issue that could affect all Nexus 7 when they are put in the same conditions?
You pretty much answered and solved your own problem.

It's fine.. just the enclosed case was the issue.
My advice is to only use a case when doing light duties, or your battery will suffer for it.

He would have only had to play for maybe 20-30 minutes to cook the nexus.
I just played for 15 minutes and it made my nexus the hottest I've ever seen...
You need to understand though, unless the device is insulated there is no difference in heat between 30 minutes gaming and 30 hours gaming. Phones/tablets/computers get up to temperature quickly.

If he has his device rooted and ovrclocked that could be he reason why its overheating.. when I play with my device it doesn't get very hot

I played for about 25 minutes when it first happened. The second time, with the hard back case, I played for 10 minutes. My Nexus 7 is rooted but not overclocked, original ROM and kernel. I reverted to a good backup and the problem was still there.
Since it happened, my N7 seems to be more problematic than before. For example, after being charged in the hard back case, I experienced the problem only 2 minutes after I started playing with it. It's as if something has been damaged by the first overheating and now it overheats pretty easily even with less demanding games.
If I can't use a case with my N7 then I must consider it defective. So, I emailed Google for a replacement this morning. Just as I started to enjoy my tablet after a first replacement (screen lift), this happens...

External temperatures can affect overall device temps as well (as in, if your sitting in a meat freezer, your Nexus 7 is very unlikely to overheat, whereas if your sitting outside in 100F weather...)

Yep.
Although OPs nexus seems to be defective if its overheating now in 2 minutes.
Since reaidng this thread a few days ago I decided to try Beach Buggy Blitz and now im hooked on it, my Nexus can handle hours of gameplay in 25c ambient.. wouldn't wana try on a really hot day because it feels really warm already.
I seem to notice more framerate slowdown as the N7 gets hotter, maybe thermal throttling.

I'm not a gamer by any stretch of the imagination. However, I experienced random reboots while I was writing a long email using Swype with my Nexus 7 in the Poetic case. When I looked, the temperature was VERY high as reported by System Tuner. I removed the case, cooled the back of the Nexus, and everything went back to normal. I WAS overclocked, so I went back to a kernel locked to stock speeds. I haven't seen any serious issues since. But it's pretty clear that if you're using a case, the Nexus can't shed heat quickly enough the way it was designed to.
I keep a closer eye on it now.
What models/build, gig and first 3-4 characters of your serial number, do you have?
I had a 16 gig (not sure) that was stayed cool. I exchanged it for a 32 gig (CAOK) and that would gets hot at random times of just usual use. It would get hot on the bottom left quarter of the back. The screen would take a huge percentage of the battery also.
I picked up another 32 gig (C9OK) and this one stays cool under normal usage.
Maybe we can isolate this to a certain model/build.
It was a C7O. I don't remember more than that, sorry. I've posted a video of the problem on Youtube and send that link to Google when asking for an RMA on their site. 90 minutes later, I had a response with all the needed info to return the tablet. On this one, I have to give Google a very positive note:good:.
I received another C7O and this one seems to be defect free. After 3 N7s, I finally started to enjoy my tablet...
same issue
same issue here.
i was playing Final Fantasy (so awesome that SquareENix ported this to Android and iOS... i remember the original version from my NES and it was a hoot. the only FF game i ever played) for about 2 hours or so and toward the end my Nexus 7 tablet got very hot, particularly on the "lower" portion of the device (side with the USB charging/tether port) ... of course, this is held in landscape mode for this game so it was my right hand that was hot.
anyway, just before starting one last awesome boss battle (right up at the Kraken with awesomely-decked out party, damn!) the game hung and the whole tablet froze. no home button functionality, no power button to even turn the screen off or on again.
had to hold power for 10 seconds, full reboot. even when the tablet came back up it was still wonky.
powered off, left it off for a while. it came back up just fine afterward, but the game didn't get to save so i'm back many levels before where i had been. no looking forward to that re-work. ah well, live and learn.
See thread title.
While playing simple games (like Flow Free), Facebook, and web browsing, my phone can get really warm/hot. It gets much worse while doing these while it's charging.
I haven't experienced any problems with the heat except when I was installing a lot of things via the Play store, and I got a couple reboots. It's fine otherwise... just hot.
Anyone else experience this?
Mine feels normal during everyday use, during games, about the same, ever so slightly warmer at most. I don't really notice. Any background processes heating your phone up? How is battery life as well?
Your previous phone probably got just as hot. The glass helps transfer the heat better than plastic.
Mine does get warm as well But I think the fact that we feel it might have to do with the size of the device. It's pretty thin.
Mine gets pretty toasty, but that's when I'm using it pretty extensively, like browsing web/forums for an hour straight.

Battery life is pretty good. I'll go through a whole days use with juice to spare.
My phone gets hotter than warm though. Last night playing Flow Free while charging, pressing my finger on the screen eventually gave a little sting.
I know this phone has a lot more CPU power than the hercules (Tmo GS2), but the GS2 with its big glass front never got hot like this, and it would rarely get warm.
I think if your phone is rebooting because of the heat generated from installing apps, you need to RMA it. My phone definitely feels hot after a session of playing a game but it has never rebooted because of it.
Guys, it's a highend phone, what do you expect?
Do you expect a high-end CPU in a desktop PC to run cool? Even in standby an i7 can go up to 30-40°C depending on voltage. And for four cores at 1.512 MHz theres a lot of voltage needed. Don't worry about it unless you get reboots thats not normal.
If the problem continues, send them up here to the north of Sweden. It's gonna be -25°C tomorrow and I could do with some handwarmers
I've had a overheating while playing stupid zombies 2, the phone got hot as ever, but strangely seems to be a ROM related problem, as I had this issue with aokp, while on cm10, playing the same game, the phone get lightly warm, but no more. I was using Franco kernel on both too
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
never more than a little warm with extensive use.
I'm on stock, updated the phone to whatever is the latest version that google pushed and i just started playing Angry brids for about 10 mintues and the phone got noticeably warm. I guess this is the new 'normal' now?
Mine only gets hot when I'm charging it and using it at the same time.

Mine gets pretty hot. G SAM app reports that the battery has reached 110*f from internet browsing on 3g.
I noticed mine gets pretty warm if I use it for a while just browsing the web.

Mines fine during normal usage. Except when I play graphically demanding games such as need for speed most wanted, after the first race, the screen and the back near the top is hot. Worried about it, I remember the HTC sensation used to get real hot as well, but I've also got an aftermarket battery which also helped with the heat.

I need someone to tell me if my phone should be RMA-ed or not.
Got my phone last week, currently running stock, rooted, deodexed ROM (from here). Have turned on 'Force GPU rendering' (under dev options). No other tweaks/mods (so far). Phone is GREAT in every way, except..
The phone tends to get really warm when I'm casually using it -- for e.g. browsing on Chrome for more than 10-15 minutes, or am doing something on Twitter etc. I just installed System Tuner and the phone went to 43-44 C when I was using the XDA app right now. The phone gets *very* warm when playing games on it (which I can finally do on my phone!). I'll post a follow-up to this with some temperatures for different apps/games soon.
My house is in a area of pretty poor T-Mob network, and my phone is on HSPA mode (not 2G), so I assume it gets warm during calls due to the poor network.
As a note, both the back and the front of the phone get warm, and the warmth is mostly localized to the top half of the screen.
Have been looking for a few days on XDA/elsewhere, and some people say they've not seen *any* warming. Some say its pretty standard on stock kernel.
What is the consensus? Is this fairly normal for this phone -- given the build and high-end specs ? Will simply flashing an undervolted, underclocked kernel "fix" the warmth issue (e.g. matr1x)?
Any thoughts/tips would be much appreciated.
The Nexus 4 is badly designed thermal-wise. Enough that the SoC ends up getting too hot and is throttled. It's why the Nexus 4 performs worse than the iPhone 5, Optimus G, and Note II in spite of a beefy processor. It only does well in a freezer.
There are remedies for this, you can flash custom roms and kernels and tweak until your device works to your liking. I mean, this is a nexus device after all
The phone getting warm is normal. No need for a RMA the next one will get warm too.

Yeah I'm also experiencing these "issues". Are there at remedies? I have PA and matrix kernal installed but it still gets really warm 40+ °C when gaming.

My Nexus 4 at room temperature gets results as good as Anandtech's Nexus 4 in the freezer (and by extension, as good as the Optimus G and slightly better than the iPhone 5). The Nexus 4's thermal design seems fine - I would expect a phone with a 4+ watt S4 Pro to get warm. I would be more concerned about it NOT getting warm, since that means a lot of heat is being trapped inside. Perhaps Anandtech's review unit has that problem.

Here are the temps I've seen since my post (using System Tuner) :
Idle: 36-37C
Charging: 45 C
XDA/Gmail (15 mins reading): 47-50 C
Chrome (5 mins): 50 C, (and 51 while multi-tasking just now.)
Navigation/music: 44-45 C
Based on responses, I guess these are somewhat to be expected? Debating whether to try playing with the kernel, or try my luck with a replacement..

yeah, when i'm not gaming. normal temps are around 33C
15 minutes of playing Arcane Legends I hit about 64 C. Anyone else getting temps like this while gaming? Could this be a RMA case?
got my n4 a little over a week ago and ive noticed terrible battery life when gaming games that i would not consider graphic intensive, like hill climb racing. the phone also gets a little hot but thats to be expected. the physical battery seems ok. but the battery life im talking about is like 40% of the battery drained for about 15 minutes of gaming, which seems crazy excessive. i even tried factory resetting, disabling sync and location reporting, blocked the maps autostarts, and having only the stock apps plus the one game, all to no avail. the screen on times also seems to be really low compared with some people. ive tried this on stock, xylon, and xylon with faux kernel and all about the same results. is anyone elses battery like this because it seems like theres an issue and im debating about whether i should RMA it or not
