My nexus 4 sometimes instantly shows fully charged when it should have been about 50%. It has done this several times now. The animation in the top right and in the pull down also shows a full charge. Turning the phone off and then on again solves the issue it seems. But if I don't pay attention to this, I wonder if it will charge my phone or not?
Uh, sounds like RMA time to me.

That happened to me once. I turned mine off, plugged it in, and turned it back on. That cured the problem and it hasn't happened again since. Crossing my fingers.

Hello. I created this account so I can finally ask some of my questions regarding this phone. I've had it since the January 6th shipping, and it's really been fine for the most part. I've the 8 gig version.
Anyway - within the last few weeks my phone has been refusing to charge on random occasions (it's really very random as to when it will charge and when it won't) - both plugged into the wall outlet via the USB power converter that came with my phone and plugged into my computer.
It's been pretty annoying, but nothing I couldn't work around. It would charge eventually.
However, last night I plugged it in to the outlet and it made the noise confirming it was plugged and started charging. This morning, I unplug it and it's non-responsive. It doesn't respond to anything. I have tried:
-turning it on with the power button; holding it down for an extended period and releasing
-taking out the battery
-plugging it in to my computer (which didn't recognize anything being plugged in)
-plugging it in to a different outlet with a different cable (phone came with two)
I've let it sit plugged in for three hours now and retried all of these things and still nothing... it's dead!
I'm not sure where to go from here? I guess I should have my husband call Dell.
Has anyone had any trouble with the sporadic charging?
Are there any solutions I've missed to get my phone to turn on?
You say you've let it sit for a while, was that plugged into a power source? Try that, it sounds like your battery has gone completely flat and probably needs to sit on a power source. Failing that definitely call Dell and get a replacement battery and charger and see if that fixes it, sounds like one of those items is your problem.

Yes, it has been (and still is) plugged in that whole time. I edited my post
Yeah, something is wonky, I just cannot pinpoint it. My husband's will sometimes not charge, too. But, much less often than mine does.
charging issues
In the last 2 days my VP freezes while charging overnight. Restarts when I take out and replace battery. It will also freeze when I try to use any app while charging. I tried to use Dell chat to resolve issue but got bounced around. I even had an agent tell me my service tag wasnt valid. I'll try to call 800# when I have a free hour or so (I'm sure the call will take that long). The first two levels of support at Dell seem to have no clue regarding the VP it's very frustrating. P.S. what happens with all the apps I've purchased if they need to replace my phone?

Have you swapped batteries with your other DVP? Maybe replacement is the only option, hit up @dellcares on twitter, they have helped me in the past and bypass the whole waiting on hold nonsense with dell mobility.
@tbvnz: all your purchased appls will be reinstalled automatically if you installed them via the Zune software on your pc. The ones installed via the phone can be reinstalled from the MP on the phone, just hit the Buy button again and it will tell you its already been purchased and allow you to download it again.
Update:
I snagged my husband's battery and put it in my phone. My phone immediately came on and is now functioning. My computer recognizes it as being plugged in and it's charging.
And, my battery in my husband's phone works fine. It is fully charged and his phone is having no issues.
Certainly this is annoying (and did in fact happen to my husband a few weeks ago where his phone wouldn't respond until MY battery was put in his phone, but we chocked that up to the battery being dead {which it was}.) but at least my husband and I both have DVPs and can interchange batteries... I wonder what someone who didn't have that option would do.
Certainly confusing that removing and replacing my existing battery wouldn't turn the phone on, but my husband's would - even though both batteries are at full charge.
Thanks for the help! I'm not sure if I should contact Dell about it or not. Clearly it's subpar performance, but I've not been completely impressed by this phone in the nearly two months that we've had them, anyway.
Good to hear you are up and running. You could keep an eye on the situation and contact Dell for a replacement battery if it occurs again.
Thanks. Yep, I'll contact them the next time it happens. Anyone else had this problem??

My brother and I have experienced the same behavior on both of our phones. Most recent was his this past week, exactly as you described. It would not turn on via the power button, so I swapped his battery with mine and his booted right up. When I tried his battery in my phone it showed a full charge. That has happened to me one or two times, randomly.

I've seen that behavior in my DVP (picked it up two weekends ago) and I can tell you how to work around it.
What seems to be happening is some kind of bug when you have it connected and charging and try to turn on/off the phone. If you notice, when it seems unresponsive, the hardware keyboard will probably still light up. This is because it's actually on but the screen just doesn't get any output/input.
What I did was this:
1. Disconnect your phone from the charger.
2. Slide the hardware keyboard down so you can see whether it is lit up (on) or not.
3. Hold down the power button until the exact moment you see the keyboard go dark (off). You have to be quick because it will try to turn right back on a few milliseconds later if you still have the power button depressed, leaving it still non-responsive.
4. Wait a few seconds, and press the power button as normal to turn it on. This time you should see the Dell logo, etc. and everything will be fine.
I've gotten into the habit of either leaving it on or turning it off before I connect it to my charger (it's my alarm clock so it's on almost all the time).
Hope that helps.
my DVP won't turn on either...
Hi - i'm glad i found this post because i've had my DVP for 3 days now and its frozen about 5 times and this morning wouldn't turn on or seem to take a charge. it was fully charged when i put it down last night and this morning there was nothing.
i've stuck it into a wall outlet for now and i guess i'll just wait for it. don't know what else to do. don't know anyone else around with the same phone, so that battery swap isn't an option. pretty funny that you realized to do that and that it worked.
anyway, i feel better now that i've complained about it. thanks.
Did you try pulling the battery and then booting it up? If that doesn't work, after a pull just leave the battery in the phone and let it charge. After 20 minutes you should see it power on.
So it's continued to happen with my phone whenever I have it plugged in to the wall with the brick that came with the phone. Annoying! Basically I cannot have it plugged in next to my bed; it can only charge on my computer. So much for using it as an alarm!
I will try the power down and reboot with the keyboard out. I know what you speak of with the flashing keyboard. I hadn't tried to see if mine is flashing while the phone is 'dead'.
I was using my Nexus 7 til it hit about 15% and the battery alert came out. I turned it off, plugged into the charger and left it there overnight. The following night I took it out of my pouch only to realise that its very warm. I had to press on the power button for a good 10 seconds before it turned on, and when it booted up the battery had only 5% remaining, even though it was fully charged (I checked to make sure it was 100%) and was left OFF the entire day.
I encountered this before but thought I solved the issue after wiping the device and flashing CleanROM 3.0 without any custom kernels or tweaks. Looks like the issue is back, any idea what might be wrong? I hope it has nothing to do with the physical battery itself because that would be a pain. Other than this, the day to day battery life of the tablet and stability is pretty good.
BUMP
No one really? Im sure there are people who experienced this before.
My wife's phone does something very similar. Crashes, heats up and when she gets it back on the battery has taken an absolute hammering. Luckily it occurs only rarely and it appears that there are no long term consequences.
Cheers Danny

What phone is she using? Is it rooted?
Anyway I think i figured out why, i happened to notice it by chance. After full charge, i plug it out and notice the screen is actually turned on even though the device isnt! The screen is just showing a plain blank screen, but you can tell its turned on, by looking at an angle. I had to manually force a shut down by holding the power button before it goes off, then the tablet automatically switches on. It seems that it only happens when i charge the tablet while its switched off, I wonder if it has anything to do with the bootloader (Im on 4.2.1) or the charger itself.
Galaxy s2 rooted, does not appear to be rom or kernel specific as it occurs with different combinations. Anyway good news you have at least identified the problem.
Cheers Danny
Sounds like it never charged. Why turn it off to charge it? Airplane mode is just as good.

It did charge because when i turned it back on it showed as 95%, the first 5% was drained because the screen was left "on" the whole time. I am beginning to suspect it is the case I use with the tablet. Its similar to those smart cases on the iPad where the screen auto ons/off when you flip or close the cover. I notice that even during the process of shutting the tablet down the flap still affects the screen off/on when i close it. A potential way of screwing up stuff. Next time I charge it turned off, I'll try removing the case entirely and see what happens.
Alright this time I turned the tablet off and left it to charge over night WITHOUT the casing and now it's working fine. No screen on or any heat whatsoever.

Why are you turning it off to charge? Just plug it in and be done with it. I never turn any of my devices off - the only time my S2 has been off is to reboot to flash a new ROM. Never have any charging issues.

Its just a habit i guess, and i always have the mentality that it makes a difference charging it while off
And its also good to reboot your phone once in a while, I usually do it once every 24 hours of use. Y'know, to flush out the RAM and OS so it can start anew. :highfive:
so my phone was on and i grabbed it just to check it, it was off, no led lights, tried hard reset, still nothing?
then plugged it in the charger, still nothing, disconnected and reconnected the charger about 4 times and after the last time i disconnected it it started to show it was charging (but the cord was unplugged) and was "charging" for like 15 secs then screen shutoff, then was able to power it on with no problems?
battery was at 55%
wasnt undervolted at all.
had just flashed xylon rom about 2 days prior and only had it that one time, got me thinking wtf caused this ?
any ideas ?

a derp probably. you could have had a process that the phone couldnt shut down, or some bad code in the rom. a forced shutdown resolves this(long press power button for about 10-15 seconds).

yea oh well, hopefully nothing serious comes from this :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
Hey guys, just started seeing some odd behavior today. My phone is currently 73% charged and when I went to top it off I noticed the LED was flashing strangely. Turning the screen on and checking the lockscreen I noticed that it was constantly going from Charged to Charging, back and forth. It didn't seem to actually be charging at all.
I tried two different adapters and cables then a cold boot. It started charging normally for a few minutes, then started doing this again. Does that sound like a bad USB connection on the phone's end?

Sounds like a dodgy battery to me.
Does it show the same behaviour when you plug it in with the phone turned off? If not, then it could be the ROM you are running, especially if you have dirty flashed different ROMS.
If its the battery, you can get replacements or just send the phone back. Try running it right down too and fully recharging. I had a similar problem on my Sensation and it turned out to be the battery. There are threads on how to remove the back cover and replace the battery. But avoid opening it unless you have no recourse with Google / your supplier.

A better test would be to see what it does when its turned off and charging. If its staying fully charged, then its 99% software issue. But batteries can be shyte. Esp if yours is an early model which the batteries are about 7-8 months old now.
Hope you narrow it down m8
This is a really stupid question, but what SHOULD happen when it's turned off and plugged in? I've never had it off before since getting it.
Plugged into charger #1: Charging icon with lightning bolt briefly, screen off, then icon of battery filling up, screen off. Screen kept going on and off.
Plugged into charger #2: Charging icon with lightning bolt briefly, screen off, then icon of battery filling up, screen off and has been off since.
It did charge to 100% (while turned on) on charger #2 last night, but I've also seen it do the Charged/Discharging dance on this charger once as well.
This is the second time...factory resettled it, works well for a couple of days and problem start to come back...need to restart phone then only it is able to charge it..
Definitely not hardware because when I plugged in my phone, it doesn't charge, until when I switched off, it starts charging..
