[Q] A Nook newbie questions please bare with me :) - Nook Touch General

Hello guys,
First of all thanks for this amazing forum and for the great spirit of helping others
Here's the case I'm getting my nook in 7 days (shipped from united status to egypt my country) and I got some inquiries and so on
1. Will I be able to read Arabic books (PDF)
2. If my main usage will be reading only and maybe checking on my emails and my Facebook should I root or not?
3. I heard that even after rooting and saw some YouTube videos that the experience of scrolling on the screen after rooting isn't good
in another meaning that it not worth rooting because It will not be pleasing.
4.To root (I read instructions and everything) but what's the difference between TouchNooter and Nook Manager? like what's better and on what occasions should I use any of them?
Sorry for annoying you guys hope you can bare with me.
Thanks in advance for whoever will bother to reply

1. You should be able to read arabic texts. Also with rooted nook you can download various PDF readers.
2. Checking emails and Facebook is almost imposible without root. Default browser is quite bad.
3. Scrolling is complicated but you can use norefresh app or browse pages one by one without scrolling.
4. Main difference for me is: TouchNooter has Gapps and NookManager has Amazon market. Also TouchNooter is only for firmware < 1.2.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

desire hd root - help

Hey sry my bad English-speaking i want a video showing me how to root . I have seen the root threat an I don't understand anything I'm bad to English . So please can any one make a video of how to ? Thx xda I love you all
That video would be very long Download Google Chrome, go to the menu in the top right corner and choose Options. Then click the Tab "Under the Bonnet" and scroll down until u find the "Translate" tick. Make sure it is "ticked" (the little square is not empty) and then press OK.
Now every time you enter a site in a different language it will ask you if u want to translate it in your own.
Good luck
I see another bricked phone coming up lol

Actually, rooting is the easiest thing (get visionary R12+).
S-off flashing boot: would be interesting to see what happens when you have google translate the fastboot commands
I have got the (visionary 14 ) but can I put custom Rom without rooting ? or do the 1.5 gh hack with visionary ?

Follow the detailed description described here. It's pretty simple and straightforward (I'm new to Android with just basic knowedge of Linux and had no problems rooting my phone), but you need to follow it strictly. Also, there is a chance you can brick your phone, so whatever you are doing, you are doing it at your own risk!
You can ask someone that speaks your language to translate it for you and describe the procedure in a PM.
big thank
Thanks man this thread worked for me Thanks many Thanks

[Q] Language issue?! please help..

Hi,
I really need an Arabic support to my milestone 2 device. I've searched the net for a solution with no result, it might be due to the fact that milestone 2 hasn't been officially released in the middle east!!
I'm quite sure it's possible because milestone 1, Defy and Atrix users have had a solution for this issue, then why not me?
Please guys any help would be appreciated, I'm fed up with this!
I'm running the latest firmware 2.2.2
Thanks in advance!.

EDIT: there's a reason a thread has been created for general questions. had you looked through that thread there wouldnt be a need to create a new thread on this. refer to this thread for your answer.

We would have all languages if we would have a Cyanogenmod ROM but we haven't at this moment. You can eventually install More Locale app from market, and add your locale. After that you will get your language in all apps that support it.

Just install the "More Locale" app from the Android Market, and add your (Arabic) locale in this app. After that all installed apps will recognize your system locale as the Arabic and automatically will be translated to this language if support it. Just try and see results.
agent008my, mkmck or anyone can help, if you could guide me through this?
I've found this generic Arabic files for android 2.2 & 2.3
but I don't know if I can apply them to milestone 2 and how? because I'm no expert in milestone 2 firmware, especially that Arabic is shown in my device but the problem is that it's not connected letters, so there is a little hope here

the steps to the link there is pretty straight forward. you have to make sure your phone is rooted though. to root your phone, check through the android development section of this MS2 forum and you should be able to root your phone then. read carefully, and then read again before you attempt a root. once rooted, download root explorer or something similar and you should be able to follow the steps in that blog pretty easily
edit: you should be able to search through all the extension files stated (right from checking if your ROM is deodexed to modding the system/framework extensions) in that blog after you have rooted your phone via root explorer or similar
always always perform a nandroid backup before you start rooting your phone or installing the patch. you can learn more about nandroid backups and similar android terminology and rooting through these threads:

I installed Root explorer and before rooting I've explored the Framework. I found a framework with odex extension which make it not suitable for the method the guy mentioned.
So my question here, is deodexing the rom a possible thing for a basic user (I've read it's a complicated method), or do you advice me not to do it? -to be able to apply the files-
Thanks very much!.

to be very honest with you, here is my understanding on deodexing:
Apk files have respective odexes that devs use to supposedly save space. Deodexing means you convert it back to a .dex file and put it back inside the apk. This allows you to easily replace files (not having to worry about odexes), but the main point was to deodex services.jar so that you can change all text to different colors (such as the clock color to white) and to deodex services.jar, you need to deodex everything.
to be honest i know nothing about deodexing or how difficult it is to carry out. however, i did take the liberty of searching some up for you, and there is a tutorial on this forum about deodexing. its very complete and it should be able to help you.

Lots of miscellaneous questions.... Please help

Hi,
After searching around the forums and looking for a few things I have arrived at a few questions...
1. If anyone living in india has flashed Xxkb3 modem along with the xxkb3 rom... can you tell how is it? planning to re flash my phone..
2. Can I use my old modem while flashing a new firmware? Just want to confirm...
3. Skinning swype ? Is it possible? Changing the tracer path colour as shown by tripin is an awesome thing to do!
Aside from a few stock apps like samsung app store, aldiko book reader, calender clock widget, social buzz and layar (not sure of it)
what all other apps can I remove aside from these above mentioned apps..?
though I saw a list once here in the forum but now I am unable to find it...
Please don't shout if these things have already been discussed by you people...
Just clarifying a few doubts...
Thanks a lot....

[PATCH] Fix Arabic [RTL] on GB 4.5.91

Hello there
I have managed to get fix Arabic on GB 4.5.91, through patching and compiling framework.jar and libwebcore.so.
This will work on every rom that is based on AT&T 4.5.91.
Here is how to patch your phone:
Manually
1) Be sure that your phone is Rooted and Deodexed.
2)Download GBArabic.zip attached and extract it on your phone.
3)Now using Root Explorer or any other root file mangers.
Copy framework.jar to /system/framework/ and fix the permissions
Copy libwebcore.so, libicuuc-arabic.so and libandroid_runtime.so to /system/lib/, and fix the permissions
Be sure that you set permission for all, or you will stuck in bootloop.
4) Reboot and enjoy.
or
CWM Flashable File
1) Be sure that your phone is Rooted and Deodexed.
2)Download CWM-Arabic.zip attached and place it on your phone.
3)Boot into the recovery, and flash the file.
4) Reboot and Enjoy
p.s.
I am quite new here in the forum. So I couldn't post this on the Dev Forum.

My Computer- for taking so much time compiling .
Changes
Changes:
7/29/2011:
Added CWM zip file
Arabic Files for CherryBlur v1.4d Rom ( it's based on ORFR and not working with At&t)
http://www.mediafire.com/?zd93z9leslz6wtc ... tested by me
Thanks Jack,
Does the Browser and Gmail show Arabic correctly in ORFR?
If it worked, I will update my post.
If not, could try and use my libwebcore.so on your phone, and report back to me?
no it's doesn't support the browser
and sorry I changed the rom and can't test the new files
Successfully Installed - CWM Version
Just flashed the CWM file. Working on Alien ROM.
Works perfectly (RTL needs some alignment "observed in Facebook App only"). Donation is on the way! Extra ordinary work and Cheers!

copied the files manually while half asleep, seems that I've messed up ... was stuck in the boot screen, downloaded the automated installation file, applied it and now it works perfectly !
RTL is still not right in gmail messages, but that's super low priority

What you did wrong the first time, is that you haven't set up the permission, but hey you were half sleep I won't blame you .
I just noticed the alignment of Gmail, and droidace says it happen on Facebook.
It seems that these two apps, use different files to show alignment than the browser.
I will take a look at it.
Thanks for reporting, and hope you enjoy it.

How did you update to 4.5.91 ? official update, SBF, OTA, other ? I am still not sure what's the safest way to go to .91 with everyone warning about bricks on this forum
how did you root/deodex ?
Sorry for my dump questions if they sounded so, But i am new into this coming from the iOS land and overwhelmed with all the terms
Thanks mdd5
Hello Ramy, and welcome.
Since you are new here, I will encourage to take a look at THE BEGINNERS (N00B) GUIDE!!!

Now to answer your questions,
ramy_Maia said:

I did update to 4.5.91, by unlocking the bootloader and flashing one of the roms here on dev section, not official.
I am still not sure what's the safest way to go to .91 with everyone warning about bricks on this forum
Everything is safe as long as you follow the guide.
many of the bricks happen here is because people updated to .91 using official then tried sbf to an older version.
When you update using official, you can't flash an older version.
how did you root/deodex ?
As of now, the only way to have root and deodex on .91 is by flashing unofficial ROMs
So you will need to unlock the bootloader and flash one.
Sorry for my dump questions if they sounded so, But i am new into this coming from the iOS land and overwhelmed with all the terms
Your question are not dumb, I was just like a couple of weeks ago.
However, it is better to ask questions like this in Atrix 4G Q&A forum, so you get better answers and faster than here. You can also use search

Great work. I'm glad to see people using my blog and the sources to get Android arabized
Options of Arabic Fonts
Not really sure if there is an option to change the Arabic fonts? Any ideas?
Awesome work anyway with or without fonts
Thank you for your effort
In Alien Rom, Does it work for Write & Read or full (with menus)?
same question in Cherry Rom.

Bloody hell, use the search function! It isn't difficult!
Having said that, this is a complete guide to doing so. And yes, the ROMs tend to be multi-lingual and a lot support RTL writing for Arabic. It should state in the OP if it does.

Google Video is your best friend!
Jayceooi hd2 video tutorials are very clear and simple to follow!
Download the videos and watch them over and over again until you get it!
Once you have had sufficient exposure to the process of installing nand android (like original) come back to xda and read the tutorials just to make sure the information is up to date!
Don't rush! Keep watching the videos until you "get it"!
Download the files needed to flash. Place them in folders numbered to the sequence required for installation.
I know you feel a little inundated now but once you watch the videos it will make sense!

As you are a native English speaker (or have a bloody good translator) you should EASILY be able to follow that guide. I'm 14 and I could, and I had literally no experience of anything like this beforehand. @lunchmoney (lol) jayceooi's tutorials are indeed very good, and show the step-by step-with text + have links to the XDA threads for downloads and he also answers all his questions on his website.
SD roms that load with haret
Do all sd builds load using haret? For example: Could I run ICS beta 2 using haret?
Thanks for the support...
