I've been looking for a physical button to take pictures, its kinda hard to take selfies even when using the front camera with just one hand. Does anybody know how to make a physical shutter button? Like on some phones you can take a picture by holding down the the volume down button?

You can do this with a camera app called Camera FV-5
It's pretty common on third-party cameras; both Camera ZOOM FX and lgCamera can assign the shutter action to a hardware button.

Yes, use the volume rocker in order to use the digital zoom.
There is no optical zoom though.. Its probably better to edit the photos later than use digital zoom..
Verizon SGT built-in camera has no zoom features. Please confirm. Others camera apps from market zoom freeze the camera application. Any help will be appreciated.

Silly question, but did you try the volume rocker?
I knew about the volume rocker. It doesn't work. I have both Droid 1 & Droid X. It looks like mine is defected. Thanks for your confirmation.

Called Verizon, confirmed the camera zoom feature is not available. Too bad.

It's not just Verizon, it's the entire Tab range that does not have a zoom function for the camera.
There is however a workaround which involves using a third-party camera app named Vignette.
Vignette uses a live action crop tool which is basically the same as the digital zoom you find on any phone camera.
What is so great though about Vignette is it is far, far better in use than the stock camera App on the Tab.
Vignette has so many additional settings and effects for you to use, it's quite unbelievable. Not only that, I did a series of tests between Vignette & the stock camera and found on all accounts Vignette produced much sharper photos with more natural colours. What was also amazing was the crop tool (which is presented as a sliding zoom level) actually produces good results at various levels of zoom.
Go on, give vignette a try, I am sure you will be amazed and quite happy with it. It's become my Camera App of choice now.
Thanks for the info. I will try this out.

I have tried both of the cameras, normal gingerbread camera and miui camera. I can only focus before taking a picture. Anyone knows how to focus before taking a video/focus while recording ?

The last time I used a phone which has a shutter was probably the Nokia N82 if i am correct...at first I really missed the shutter button but I have become used to the onscreen camera button after using several android phones. I find it more quicker and more convenient to take photos than a dedicated button. What I really missed is a physical keyboard......
U can use some programs as camera ICS or so to assign hardware keys like volume as a cam shutter button..

does anyone know if it may be possible to implement like the galaxy note 2 camera has with the "voice to capture picture" option? that would definitely be something that would be a nice addition to the nexus camera, at least it seems it would.

Use Camera Zoom FX or Camera 360 for Voice controls.
thanks, well that sounds easier than trying to hack note features into our camera which is what I was expecting to hear. do those apps work with our current camera as the shooting software or will it be a separate camera interface all together?

Separate camera app. Totally different interface having much more options than stock camera app. Much much more.
