Hi!
The nexus 4 allows me to share the Cellular data connection with my pc by USB passthrough.
I use a Broadband LAN connection on my Desktop (wifi or connectify is not an option). I would like to share my desktops internet with the Nexus 4 via USB.
How do I do this? I know HTC Sync has the option. Is there any way to do this?
Also, like HTC Sync and Nokia PC Suite,
is there any pc client software for the Nexus?
Thanks
No client software for the Nexus since Android (well Google) is a "cloud" company. Everything syncs with the cloud rather than locally with your PC. Don't know of an option to share the PCs LAN with the Nexus via USB so you might be out of luck there.
I know what you ask for, I used to do that with my BB.
I really don't think it's possible, maybe buying those Wi-Fi adapters to your desktop (if you don't want a router, as you advised is not an option)

Check out this one. This should work. I used this for my previous phone when I had very limited data plan. As long as I remember this is not phone specific so shld work on N4 too,
Check out play store. there are some app which I never checked.

But I am sure you will find some option after some research.

im new to any form of htc or palm(any windows based phone). my blackberry i could do a bunch of stuff without having internet through various simulators and whatnot. i was interested in getting the touch because i believed it had wifi, but know i realized that it doesnt(still havent purchased it.)
so my questions are
will the phone be able to receive a internet signal through bluetooth? as in i connect my phone to my macbook, i should receive a connection.
if i connect it to the computer via usb will i be able to download applications just like if i had the internet plan?? i really do not need the phone to be able to have internet at all times, just for downloading apps. i mainly use smartphones for there planning and scheduling abilities.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
just some side info, switching from sprint is not an option, nor is getting a information plan, as im a broke college kid.
Not sure about the bluetooth, it should be possible though.
As for the USB yes, infact if you are downloading applications do this over your regular internet if you don't have unlimited wireless internet from your provider. Applications can be quite big and you can hit your download limit very easily this way.
thanks a bunch, i went and checked the phone out today and i liked it a bunch. once again, and to not start another new thread thats probably answered somewhere, is it possible to send ringtones to the phone through usb?

Sure, you can do that and much more (including internet connection sharing) by USB or Blue Tooth, through ActiveSync...
great, oct 1st is the day...already bought a case and microsd card..

HTC announced the Touch 3g and Touch HD which look very similar to the Vogue. I'm not sure when these devices will be released but they have the features you seem to be looking for (WiFi). If you wait a little bit, you may, or may not be happier with the 3g or HD.
Just some information in case you never heard of these devices yet.
http://www.htc.com/www/default.aspx
EDIT: I am not sure about connecting a vogue to a mac, as it requires activesync to connect which is a Microsoft product. Most newer macs allow you to run windows xp, so it should be no problem. Also, when the phone is connected via USB, it will not use your regular DSL/Cable connection to access the internet. You will need to download the applications on your computer first, then transfer to the phone via activesync.
There's also the Mogul which is out now that has built in wifi. Prices are low and should be dropping as newer phones come out. Good for a broke college student.

Actually the phone can connect to the Internet via desktop DSL/Cable when they are USB linked.... but you'd never do that just to get apps on you phone. It's really only useful for syncing email to your phone when you don't have a data plan for the the phone.
Sprint HTC Touch internet thru bluetooth
So has anyone been able to figure out how to connect to the internet thru bluetooth to your PC/MAC? For example: If you are in an area that doesn't have cell coverage at all (Sprint or roaming) if you have an internet connection on your PC/MAC (DSL, Cable, etc.) can you connect to the computer thru bluetooth and access the internet on the Touch? It would be great for VOIP like Skype(out).
So I am not asking how to connect your computer to the internet thru your phone. Just the opposite, actually. Specifically asking for MAC.

Yeah, I read too quickly and missed the BT requirement.
I tether using bluetooth with my mac book, you can use Internet connection sharing or pda net, and use the btpan feature.
Hello all,
after reading and searching a few hours about this, I have to make a new thread because I cant manage to make it work.
I have got an cable internet connection at work, and and samsung galaxy. I want to use my computers internet connection to get my galaxy online. There seems to be something like an ad hoc internet connection which can be shared over wifi using connectify. The problem although is that this can only be used with windows 7 and unfortunately my work pc is still XP...
My previous phone was an HTC HD2, and now I was satisfied with the galaxy, but when the HD2 was connected with active sync, it automatically used the pc's internet connection.... Huge fail in my opinion!
any suggestions here to make it work?
thank you!
Maybe this?
Everybody would like to thank you for opening a new topic on an overdisscused subject!
Sent from my fingers!
ad hoc on a win7 won't work out of the box with your i9000(undiscoverable network), i give winxp a better change. =/
I also tried to use an ad-hoc network with Windows 7 - no luck, the Galaxy doesn't detect the network for some reason. I am able to detect and connect to the ad-hoc network with an iPad however... odd.
Hi
Nice thread.
Actually I've been using a WinMob since last many years and now shifted to SGS.
WM 2002-WM6.5 all when connected via usb to PC use PC internet connections. No tethering or reverse of the same is required. This is painfully missing in android phones, I've checked with HTC desire also.
SMS management also in WM was much better and advances, You can have drafts, sent, outbox separate storages and folders. I had over 300 msgs in drafts, here no such option.
ad-hoc
I guys, i think i can help with some info.
In some foruns the solution is to unroot the deviceand install some apps.
I would prefer to do it without unrooting.
Not sure whats the trouble with my N7. My Win 8 laptop fails to see it in the MTP mode. It does see it sometimes if I change to PTP but then the data copying capabilities get limited.
I was trying to capitalize the "WiFi Direct" to move files from my Note-2 to N7 but looks like there as well are some problems. I can pair but I can't transfer no files.
Are there any options other than the USB OTG? I personally hate carrying extra stuff, however small it be. Since the phone would always be with me, its the most logical thing to carry all the data (have odd 40gigs available) on the phone and transfer to the N7 wherever the need be.
Anyone ?
Bluetooth?
If you don't want to go otg then I don't see any other option if wifi won't work.

Bluetooth is slower than a snail.
The issue is some frakked up rights issue. The devices pair fine via wifi. The transfer gets rolled down by some "Transfer not allowed" $hit. Even NFC doesn't seem to be complying.
I am very sure some custom ROM would get that fixed but then what is the point? I need pure google experience.
May be some app on play store?
In the worst case I'll sell this thing off. The Note-2 is good enough for most of my needs except for movie watching (and book reading (and internet browsing (and timely updates (and simplicity (and.....:silly))))

Good option while at my home but not when I am on the move. Transferring big files is again a hassle. Not to mention the data network dependency. I just need something which can workout directly between the Note-2 and N7.
Installhttp://fdmobileinventions.blogspot.com/p/fast-file-transfer.html on phone. It uses WiFi tether in your phone. On tablet to receive file(s) you need to connect to WiFi and enter link in browser. I bookmarked link for easy use.
No data connection on phone required.
I've used AirDroid to transfer files between two Nexus 7 tablets. They need to both be on the same WiFi network so it is not direct. Just install and start AirDroid on your Nexus. Then direct the browser on your Samsung to the web address and enter the password - both listed on the Nexus. Files can be transferred in either direction. No need to install AirDroid on the Samsung.
You can also connect your Nexus to your PC this way.
Nexus Media Importer is another possibility. It will import files from a flash drive to your Nexus over an OTG USB cable but will not transfer files from the Nexus to the flash drive.

Thanks to both of you but unfortunately thats not what I am looking at. I wish to have direct transfer, without needing any extra wifi router to be dependent upon. At home I have this Belkin N600 to which I can attach my 1TB USB drive and all the data is available over the network. Accessing stuff at home is not a problem. On the go, I don't have high speed internet or my LAN. Thats where I am seeking possibilities.

You haven't read well enough. You don't need WiFi router nor data conection with 'fast file transfer'. it uses wifi tether from your phone and sends files directly to your tab. Try it, its free.
So, at my college there are two networks that a student can use, one designed for computers (that has a proxy) and one that is designed for mobile devices (no proxy, requires MAC to get on.) I was wondering if it was possible to share my Nexus 7 *WIFI* connection to my PC...

Your pc got a wireless dongle?
If so just turn your Nexus into a Hotspot, connected to the Network you want
Then connect your PC to your Nexus ??
Well, I didn't make it clear. I have a wifi version N7. All I want to do is share the wireless connection that the n7 is already on with my PC. So a wireless tether would not work.
You can try to spoof your N7's mac on your pc using Mac Makeup. Your pc needs a wireless adapter and spoofs your n7's mac, so it should connect to the mobile wireless network. You probably won't be able to have both devices on the wap concurrently.
I'm guessing the reason you're looking to doing this to bypass the proxy restriction your school placed on the resource. Keep that in mind in case you decide to download a ton of torrents and they trace the usage back to your N7's mac.

Yes, they would, but so what? Are they going to check all Asus devices? I'm sure there's plenty (unless you're in US, then Asus is very outstanding among all macbooks and iDevices). And you can't just assume he's going to download millions of illegal stuff. Maybe he wants to download Ubuntu via torrent
OP: I have not seen such a thing, there's normal tethering (3G to wifi hotspot), 3G-BT, 3G-USB, but I have never seen wifi-usb.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792245 check out this thread. With this adapter, BusyBox and some (more or less) basic knowlege of linux networking, I'm sure you could successfully share your wifi connection trough LAN cable, but I doubt it will ever work trough USB.
If you're running linux on your PC, then faking MAC address is so simple, that it's a better shot, if you're running windows, it's a bit trickier (but still doable).
Faking the MAC on a PC is simple too.
I'm not sure I'm even following this thread. Spoof your PC's MAC and jump on the mobile network. Done.
ALL devices have a MAC... so if they REQUIRE a specific MAC for access then they can trace everything you do online back to you. In that case I would be very cautious on what you do. They can also monitor bandwidth to your MAC (PC) and see you are pulling WAY to much bandwidth for a mobile device. If they don't care, then whatever but you may be getting a knock on your door.
You are basically circumventing their security policies and could put you in some trouble. So Clone your MAC address and keep it simple.
I've seen WiFi hotspot. Not sure if it was baked into sense though

I am wondering how I can reverse USB tether on my samsung s4 from my laptop? I am looking to do this for the best screensharing(laptop to android) speeds. I see usb tether is an option in the phone settings but I can't figure out how to get this to work and connect to my laptop. I figure by doing this I won't have to worry about lag when I stream my PC to my phone over splashtop. I am on stock rooted NAE 4.2.2.
Search for app called reverse tethering and install it to your laptop then connect your rooted android phone to the laptop and start the app from your laptop and follow pop up messages on your phone then you can connect to the Internet from your mobile phone.
I used this app before more than year and the app didn't support connecting to Google Play market but i could connect to other Internet resources.
im not sure about splashtop since i tried it once and didn't like how you needed a client on the desktop. if you're lagging it's most likely the wifi connection. IMO you should be connected using at least wireless N at minimum.
have a look at X2 client. it's completely free, no bloat and does not require a desktop client. it is true RDP. only thing is you won't be able to use windows once you login as you're in total control over the pc remotely.
