I used to be able to tether using my old ROM as well as the "un-official" new ROM versions prior to the recently released ROM update dated 4/09/07.
I use Missing Sync (ver 3.0.2) on OS X, and it would allow me to tether the 8525 using internet sharing set to USB. Now the only way I am able to tether is via the Bluetooth PAN, and even then the connection is spotty at best.
Did the official ROM change the way Internet Sharing works? This is very annoying and any assistance or ideas would be welcome.
I downgraded from the CUSTEL 2.5 WM6 ROM due to Missing sync's inability to sync with it as well as an inability to tether my Mac. Vista using Bootcamp works but Vista isn't my cup of tea...
Soon...
In a couple of weeks time you will have a solution to your problems with Apple OS X and Microsoft Windows Mobile. (Hint: it's not free.)
I am assuming that this would the much anticipated Missing sync update. If only I could shorten the wait... oh well.
Thanks.
Not really. Trade your 8525 for the iPhone!

something must be wrong with your phone because I use Bluetooth pan with internet sharing at work, in my car, at home and it works just fine. I even thought about ditching the Internet at home

I do it too. All the time. Is AWESOME from the car, especially in a a 3G area. (Parked, not driving.)
i can't even connect my 8525 to my mac via bluetooth. it worked once and now the phone won't open up the passcode screen to connect.
edit: my rom is version 1.34.502.3. should i update to a newer one?
I think its the location that I am at that may be to blame. I have a really slow connection via Bluetooth PAN. The same isn't true when using Vista and Internet sharing via USB - that connection is much faster (though it too blanks out at times).
As for connecting to OS X: simply start the Bluetooth setup assistant on the mac and search for "any device". Then select the phone and pair the two. At the very end of the process the Mac will list the services that are available via the phone. One of them will be the shared network.

yeah, it stalls after i select it from the device list. the screen where it gives me the passcode to connect it, it seems like my phone doesn't receive it. not sure. but you think i should upgrade the rom? looks like mine is kinda old.
I'm posting with OSX using my phone right now
delete the bluetooth pairing on the osx machine and on the phone
from osx bluetooth assistant and select any device
if it asks about using the phone as a headset disselect that
if the phone once pairs asks about a serial device do not select that
verify if bluetooth still is on on the phone
goto internet sharing
bluetooth pan
connect
make sure its actually connected to the internet
on the osx machine click the bluetooth icon again and select "join network on ___your phones name____ "
thats it!
sometimes give it a second
if it still doesn't work make sure you don't have some kind of crazy firewall setup
using Custel's 2.5 rom (windows mobile6)

Hi,
Some weeks ago I tryed to use MissingSync for internet sharing with different WM6 versions without success. With official AKU3.3.1 version it works with the USB cable. But battery life is very short with this version.
Regards.
Yes, missing sync does not yet support WM6. Try the "normal" bluetooth pan method described above.
Anyone tried doing OS X tethering with newer versions of the WM6 roms?
I'm currently running vp3G 2.0 (WM6), rom date 5/15/07, radio 1.40.30.00, protocol ver. 32.73.7020.16H
Because I'm working offsite tomorrow, I was hoping to use my phone to tether my laptop to work with VPN on the laptop... and then I can login and out of the timeclock, etc. But trying it from work tonight before I leave, I can't get the bluetooth on my 8525 to connect to the PC.
Followed Neomuzic's instructions to the letter, but Safari isn't getting things working. Any assistance would be appreciated!!!
Nevermind... I'm a dork! Figured out where Internet Sharing was on the phone, and all is well. Having a little trouble connecting to my work proxy server... but messing with that now.

As of August2007, Missing Sync 4 supports WM6.
I'm also using bluetooth pan right now to post
Hello all,
I usually dont post much since i rarely have anything to contribute, but this time I do. I am running a macbook connected to my cingular 8525 thru the bluetooth pan and have zero problems. I upgraded my rom to the new vp one with all the latest settings and love it. No more looking for a hotspot for me. I dont use safari broswer on my mac, i use firefox. Thanks to everyone on this forum with the knowledge and time for helping the rest of us.
What i do is connect my JasJam to xp running through parallels, start internet sharing and it installs the drivers(first time of connecting it) and then it works perfectly everytime. Only in xp though.
I have installed the latest missing sync but havent tried internet sharing on mac osx but now that u guys say it works thats awesome! Will mess with it later (knowing me i won't attempt to get it to work until i'm off in some foriegn area with no internet connection and will need to download drivers that i'll struggle to get through pie/opera on my jasjam...) i fail to plan ahead with things like this! lol

Tethering 8525 to MACBOOK. HELP.
I tried several different approaches to tether my 8525 to my MACBOOK, with no success.
I have specific scripts from the web installed into the modem scripts folder. No luck with any of them. I believe the scripts aren't the problem but the COM ports are the culprit.
I recieve an error message that says," Failed to open RFCOMM serial channel. Check if authentication needs to be enabled in your device"
This is after pairing the 8525 to the MACBOOK and completing the blue tooth setting in the Network folder in the System Preference folder.
The pairing is successful because I can "send files" to the 8525 via blue tooth icon.
I read somewhere that the MACBOOK should allow me to set and choose COM ports but I haven't found the option.
My question is where do I find the COM port option in the MACBOOK because I believe that is where my problem is.
MACBOOK C2D, OS 10.4.10.

im new to any form of htc or palm(any windows based phone). my blackberry i could do a bunch of stuff without having internet through various simulators and whatnot. i was interested in getting the touch because i believed it had wifi, but know i realized that it doesnt(still havent purchased it.)
so my questions are
will the phone be able to receive a internet signal through bluetooth? as in i connect my phone to my macbook, i should receive a connection.
if i connect it to the computer via usb will i be able to download applications just like if i had the internet plan?? i really do not need the phone to be able to have internet at all times, just for downloading apps. i mainly use smartphones for there planning and scheduling abilities.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
just some side info, switching from sprint is not an option, nor is getting a information plan, as im a broke college kid.
Not sure about the bluetooth, it should be possible though.
As for the USB yes, infact if you are downloading applications do this over your regular internet if you don't have unlimited wireless internet from your provider. Applications can be quite big and you can hit your download limit very easily this way.
thanks a bunch, i went and checked the phone out today and i liked it a bunch. once again, and to not start another new thread thats probably answered somewhere, is it possible to send ringtones to the phone through usb?

Sure, you can do that and much more (including internet connection sharing) by USB or Blue Tooth, through ActiveSync...

HTC announced the Touch 3g and Touch HD which look very similar to the Vogue. I'm not sure when these devices will be released but they have the features you seem to be looking for (WiFi). If you wait a little bit, you may, or may not be happier with the 3g or HD.
Just some information in case you never heard of these devices yet.
http://www.htc.com/www/default.aspx
EDIT: I am not sure about connecting a vogue to a mac, as it requires activesync to connect which is a Microsoft product. Most newer macs allow you to run windows xp, so it should be no problem. Also, when the phone is connected via USB, it will not use your regular DSL/Cable connection to access the internet. You will need to download the applications on your computer first, then transfer to the phone via activesync.
There's also the Mogul which is out now that has built in wifi. Prices are low and should be dropping as newer phones come out. Good for a broke college student.

Actually the phone can connect to the Internet via desktop DSL/Cable when they are USB linked.... but you'd never do that just to get apps on you phone. It's really only useful for syncing email to your phone when you don't have a data plan for the the phone.
Sprint HTC Touch internet thru bluetooth
So has anyone been able to figure out how to connect to the internet thru bluetooth to your PC/MAC? For example: If you are in an area that doesn't have cell coverage at all (Sprint or roaming) if you have an internet connection on your PC/MAC (DSL, Cable, etc.) can you connect to the computer thru bluetooth and access the internet on the Touch? It would be great for VOIP like Skype(out).
So I am not asking how to connect your computer to the internet thru your phone. Just the opposite, actually. Specifically asking for MAC.

Yeah, I read too quickly and missed the BT requirement.

Hi All,
I have searched the forums but can't find anything on my specific issue. I used to have an XDA Orbit and if I connected it via USB I could use my PC's internet connection. Is there anyway I can do this with my shiny new G1. The reason I’m asking is I have bugger all reception at work and the Wi-Fi is located in another building, which is too far away.
Please help!
Hi,
My above post has been moved here but im not trying to connect my pc to the internet using my phone, im trying to conect my phone to the internet through my PC.
As far as I can see this post does not apply to my question, can somebody please help? I can't be the only one this applies to!
If the computer has wifi and is connected to the internet through wired network it can be done...
Is this your case?
My work PC doesn't have Wi-Fi. My home PC does though.
All I want is for my G1 to be able to use my computers internet conection via USB. My old XDA Orbit used to be able to do it via active sync.
i.e I can surf the web on my phone using USB connection as the access point
Any ideas?
As far as I know this probably will not work, but you can try reversing the port forward technique with ADB

Why would you want to surf the web through the phone when you have a PC on the other end of that wire which does the same thing, but better?

Several reasons that i can think of
1? Bad reception indoors, so i can waste time at work by downloading useless apps on my G1, and everyone thinks im working.
2? My cell provider charges me for internet bandwith usage (per kb/mb), im cheap and don't wanna pay them.
3? I'm a massochist, and enjoy using the G1's browser more than firefox(bleh!)
4? I'm running out of reasons now
All this hypothetically could be hypothetical.
Yup, im bored at work
Exactly, item 1 sums it up. I have no reception at work so if I have a data connection I can get email notifications and test out my apps. I can't believe no one else is missing this feature. On my xda I had it set up to sync with my various email accounts etc. It wouldn,t be a problem if tmobile's reception wasn't so poor!
I would assume it is possible but would have to forward ports from your computer to the phone, similar to how the thetherbot app forwards ports from the phone to the computer. But I may be wrong that could be a one way street for data.
Wow...you are a masochist As much as I like the browser on the g1 compared to other phones..I just don't see why you'd always want to use it instead of a PC
I don't want to surf the web on the G1 when right infront of me I have a PC. I simply want it to have a reliable data connection when I'm at work. As I have no signal from t bloody mobile and no wifi!
Nobody made a sync application similar to MS ActiveSync?
Why would we make something that is already built in?
ohh forget it. Your obviously not reading what i've written.

No you obviously haven't paid attention.
Why would we create something to sync our phone to our computer when it does it all OTA. On top of this how did you expect it to sync our calendar and such when it is all proprietary?
What exactly do you want "sync'd"?
And once again... I am sure you could figure it out if you read up on adb forward commands.

As my first post says I have no reception at work at all, this means I go all day without being able to sync my various email accounts etc. I would also like to be able to demo what our device can do to my collegues. unfortunately i don't understand adb or indeed know what it stands for and as I have no programming knowledge i thought I would speak with people that do.
I will try to figure it out for myself and post my findings here. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks it would be useful.
I'm also looking for some solution to use my Laptop's internet connection on my G1 via USB. The reason for this is I have a very weak neighbors wifi and only my Laptop can connect to it. I am writing android apps that need to connect to the internet.

you could set up an adhoc connection on the computer and connect to it on the g1 then bridge the networks
unfortunately my work PC does not have a Wi-Fi card so this wouldn't work. damn it whys it so complicated!?! :-(
You could just buy a router.
Hi there Im not too new or anything i just don't tend to post very often. Anyways on to my question, my Vibrant doesn't seem to connect to my wireless router which is in my parents house atleast 75ft away. But my laptop does. Is there anyway i can connect to my laptop and use its WIFI? Is there an app or maybe an internet sharing option. I've looked around online but haven't really seen any good tutorials on this topic. thanks again in advance.
Yes, you can share the internet from your computer. Which OS are you using? Windows calls this "internet connection sharing".
Here's a tutorial for XP

Do you want to use your phone's internet for your pc? Then yes- it's possible with apps. (called tethering. search for wifi tether or usb tether in market or on xda...)
if you want to use your pc's connection - then probably not.

no i mean i donot have a wifi modem and i have adsl net modem and also with respect to battry problem in hd2 i prefer to use net with prob connection but many of builds did not have the internet pass through option
for this aim i like to know that is it posible to add this option to that kind of build as a for example apk software
I have the same issue, having the Internet Pass-Through function (which uses PC's connection on the phone) of Desire HD builds on the Desire builld would be great.
yap
its easy you can use your pc's wifi and turn it into a access point
and then using it trough the wifi
can't be easier than this
see,you left out the most important part: problem is that not all of the pc's have wifi!!!
There is also USB tethering, although you'll have to check if there's any builds with it working.
I don't bother with it as I use wifi tethering instead.
The program Connectify is working pretty good, to use my netbooks LAN connection as access point. Always use it abroad when in hotels without wifi and only wired internet. Works only with windows7 though.

I really feel the need to help the OP here. I don't have an answer to his question, but I do understand what he's asking for, and other people seem to be answering different things!!!
He want's to use a USB cable (not wifi) to allow his phone to use his PC's internet connection.
Tethering is irrelevant (that's using the phone's internet connection on the PC) and he does not have a wireless router so cannot use wifi on his phone.
In response to the OP, the only thing I've ever seen as a conclusive answer is that this cannot be done (there is no software that currently does it). That was an answer on a website from about 7 months ago though, and I am aware of the option on the Desire HD, so there is obviously a way to do it now.
I hope you find what you're looking for

IN the revolution HD 2.2 mdeejay NAND version - you have this option built in in this rom !!!
i used it - its working.
USB tethering is part of the Froyo OS. The problems you may have are that it does not work correctly with a lot of builds. Most of the HTC builds tend to work though.
Hmmm.... I also have the same problem.
I don't want to use the 3G Data connection for internet because it's expensive so it would be really useful to get internet through usb from a computer.
So far I only saw this option on M-Deejay's Revolution HD rom and for me it was kind of a heavy build. Worked kinda slow so I flashed a different rom which doesn't have the usb internet pass through.
I also tried Connectify. My phone connected to the computer's wireless but the internet didn't work. I tried disabling my firewall, opening ports, and other things but it just doesn't work. I think it has to do with the software not supporting all WiFi cards.
So now I'm having trouble getting on the internet with my phone to download apps. I have to go outside and look for some WiFi networks to do it and that kinda sucks
I think it finally works! I installed the latest Connectify beta version from here:
http://connectify.blogspot.com/2010/11/connectify-211-beta-up-for-testing.html
And it kinda works now! I think it's just a bit slow.
