[Q] Phone shutting off randomly - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have had my nexus 4 for 2-3 weeks and it has shutdown on me 2 times so far. Both occasions the phone was untouched and was shut off without me knowing, how long and when I have no clue but on power up my wallpaper is reset to default. I don't notice anything else besides that being changed. Anyone have a clue to a fix?

What ROM u have? I'm having same issues. I'm using Xylon. I'm bout to flash Franco #28 kernel and see if it helps.
U should try flashing a new kernel too.

bone stock. haven't done anything to it.

I also get something similar. It happens when I lock my screen. Once the screen goes off, it sometimes won't come back on until I restart my phone by holding down the power button till it's off, and then booting it. I'm not sure about my wallpaper changing, but it has happened on every rom I've used. Also, It didn't happen on stock, but I don't think I was even on stock for a week.

This never happened when I had stock...it started happening when I flashed the ROM. Hope Franco's Kernel helps.

this happens to me from time-to-time. It's not a hardware issue, it think it's a glitch with this version of the os.

Well, I called and got an RMA. Seems like a known issue as well as a battery life issue some others seem to be having. Maybe they are connected in some way. Rep said this new batch they are sending out (RMA's) do not have these issues. I hope so...

Put me down as someone having this issue, Happen 3 time now, On stock rooted os.

I read that Google have confirmed there is an issue with the latest OS that can result in random reboots. I think it has to do with location services.
I also read that turning off any options for emergency broadcasts can help with random reboots.
Some widgets that use weather can result in reboots (due to them using location services to get correct weather), and since I disabled all emergency broadcasts and stopped using widgets that show weather, I have not had a random reboot (and I was having at least one every two days before). I am still using widgets that have the ability to show weather, but I just do not show weather and this seems to help.
Random reboots was causing a major battery drain for me and since I stopped getting these reboots, my battery lasts much longer.
I am on stock ROM, rooted.

Phone randomly switching itself off

For some reason, my phone is having a nasty habit of turning itself off randomly. Sometimes it randomly resets itself and boots up again on its own, whilst other times it just turns itself off even with a full battery. However, when it turns itself off, I cannot turn it back on without first taking the battery out, then it takes ages for it to boot up again - longer than normal.
Has anyone else had this problem? I'm on stock firmware fully updated (XEU, JVQ)
Yes, same problem. if i press power button for 10 seconds it reboots, no need.to pull off battery

My friend said he also had a similar problem, but Samsung says it isn't a fault and won't fix it, despite having insurance. Getting rather fed up of it now as it's happening more frequently.
Check for apps that has excessive CPU consumption. I had this problem too, but on other ROM. The problem was an stupid app that keeps the CPU 100% all the time and the phone overheat and shut down itself.
Use CPU&Temp widget to monitor your CPU frequency.
If you still have the warranty and are totally stock with no root or anything, why not take it to carphone warehouse tell them the problem, they will reflash the software within a couple of hours. If it keeps happening then go back and tell them it needs to be look at and they will send it off. Before you go make sure you check on samsung's website for the nearest service centre as it needs to be repair centre
It's a software problem, with stock gingerbreads.

Really?? I had 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 for long enough to test it out (over a month on each) and i never had this issue...
With Darky 10.2.2 (one of the few yes i did)
Same issue here. Think my battery must be on the way out as with wifi, bluetooth and everything switched off, Im getting through half the battery in half a day, and Im not even using the thing.
Im in same situation, upgraded to Gingerbread. It's been rock solid until past couple of weeks.
Same problem here since upgrading to Gingerbread
The phone was solid before never had a single issue with it
Now i get Random powering off when in sleep mode which makes the phone useless
Never does it when on charge though
Tried New Battery = no
Wipe and re- installed software back to factory settings = no
Full re-flash and new software = no
Sent it back to Samsung for repair
might have been something wrong with hardware internals (short circuit somewhere or sumfin)
you might have used faulty mod/theme/rom/kernel
but it is not a problem of Gingerbread firmware for sure
Have you under volted your phone? This often causes reboots. I had to up my voltage at 100 mhz after it started to reboot itself, now ok. system panel monitoring is very useful to look back in time to see what been happening
Sent using TCP/IP
i had the same problem with blockbuster rom
i reflashed it
carried on
then i changed the lockscreen
now its working perfectly

Random restarts

The past week I got 3 restarts on my note. First was at home with USB cable to PC to charge it, nothing else, locked screen, don't remember if there was a running app. The other 2 times where on the road, I was listening music on stock music player. The only app I am thinking it could have something to do with this is top deals, even not 100% sure need to confirm got rid of it now let me check it. Anyone else noticed anything similar???

It happened to me few days back. It did not restart but I found it was off. Battery was around 50% and it was on third day after restart. I think it could be remote desktop app called 2X - Note particularly gets slow after runing 2X couple of times. I am on 2nd day without running 2X and I wish to confirm if this app is playing something wrong (btw I didn't have problem with 2X on S2).
Yup. It does happen to many people. "Sleep of death" happened to me several times on stock speeds/voltages. Restarts on my phone seem to be more OC/UV related.
I got mine about a week now and have had several restarts. It was way worse before I ran the update though... Now it "only" reboots 0-3 times a day
I don't dare to root it before I know it software related, but it seems like that since it got better with the official update...
I have restored it to factory defaults etc and nothing helps. I experienced this with NO extra apps installed and with the 4 apps I installed it's not worse. (Don't wanna personalize it before I root OR send it back and hope for replacement.)
Third day and it restarted. It however did not reset System Uptime.
Sent from GNote.
Never had a random restart or sleep of death, in fact I can only recall 1 FC and I've had the phone for 2 weeks now

Well what I wonder is if I root it is it possible that a custom ROM will fix my problems?

My N10 Keeps freezing and resetting

It has happened several times caused by various apps such as chrome, play store, dolphin after downloading something. Screen freezes and system eventually resets on it's own. Is anyone else having this problem?
Build: JOP40C
Same here, restarted and frozen 3-4 times in couple of hours.
I was browsing, using apps, dowloading in background, loads of syncing etc - maybe taxing the system causes it? (But i though it should handle it a bit better...)
I had a couple of reboots but no freeze before the firmware update.
After the update it hasn't rebooted but it froze once

My keeps loosing Wi-Fi and completely shut down every time I turn it off and didn't turn back on in 5 seconds. Making things worse I have to wait several minutes until it allows me to turn it on by pressing power for a 5 seconds. In those few minutes it does not react on power button at all.
Factory reset did not help. Sadly it looks like I have no options other than return it back.
+1 reboots and freezing. Don't really want to return it since its finally rooted and cust recovery. Anyone think waiting for cust Roms will help?

Mine had been randomly restarting after installing some of my apps. I finally narrowed it down to HD Widgets and haven't had a reboot since uninstalling it.
I am not using HD Widgets and I get restarts periodically. What is the most efficient way to submit a bug report to google.

Just got an RMA for mine for the same issues u guys are experiencing. Wifi disconnecting and chrome freezing and rebooting. Looks like it may not be a hardware issue. Wonder if I should just keep it and wait for an update.
Edit - It was fine before the software update. Probably should ignore it once I get my replacement unit
I am also seeing the reboots happening every 3 to 4 hours like clockwork. I didn't have the device for more than a few minutes before the first update was pushed to it, so I can't say whether or not that was related. I do have HD Widgets installed, so I will pull it off and see if that helps slow the reboots down.
I'm using BootLog Uptime to keep track of the number and frequency of reboots. If this pattern holds, my money is on some kind of memory leak... just thinking from our own development experiences. Given how much higher the resolution is on the N10, I wouldn't count out some graphics heavy apps blowing through their heap much, much faster than on any previous Android device. We'll have to wait and see.
Just called Google and asked for replacement. I hope they aired new updates at the time my replacement arrived.
BTW, I had to initiated factory reset five or six times until it finally clears all data. Never saw Google product so buggy before.
That's a real bummer. Mine doesn't reset or display any of those problems. I have a tiny bit of light bleed in one corner at full brightness and the screen seems to have gotten a little more yellow over time... maybe just the glue drying. If any of you are brave and don't want to return right away, unlock the bootloader and reflash the stock image from google and see if that fixes things. It can help if there was some sort of corruption when you updated.
You may want to wait on that RMA. I had the same trouble with HD widgets installed.
No trouble at all since uninstalling...

I've never even touched hd widgets and have had two lock ups since I got it on Friday. Both occurred when task switching back to chrome and it was loading a previously viewed web page. Both times I was able to tap the power button to shut off the screen but couldn't wake it up. It eventually reset itself. It boots in like 5 seconds so it's not too terrible to wait for a software update, but I wonder what is causing it?
I think Chrome has some major bugs to be squashed when running on this device....mine has only crashed when browsing. That said, after uninstalling HD widgets, no crashes since...

I'd like to update my results. From last night, just like djflan, I removed HD Widgets and so far, 7 hours later, the crashes are gone. So I have my fingers crossed that I've found my culprit.
Also, I installed the HoloWeb browser and I have found it to be quite a bit quicker and more stable than Chrome. For those of you have issues with Chrome it is worth a few moments to track this app down (here on XDA) and give it a try.
Some of you may not have remembered or gone through the Android 3.x transition, but these kinds of issues were very prevalent during that update as well. Many developers simply don't or can't test on a wide enough range of devices and OS combinations to catch all the issues, or they rely heavily on assumptions or code that "always worked fine" in the past. I think we're seeing the same sorts of behaviors again with 4.2, so it will take a couple of months for it all to shake out.
For now I think I have a stable configuration on the Nexus 10 and I'm sticking with the device. No RMAs will solve issues that are software related in my case.
Removed hd widgets, no crashes yet.
I get the same random reboots and I've never used the fancy widget app. it has happened 3 times already. One I was browsing, another time deleting a widget and the last one when I tried to change the wallpaper. Everytime I had to hold the power button 5-6 seconds until it reboot

I spoke to soon earlier... I actually had 2 restarts today. Once while chrome attempted to open a link from tapatalk and another while trying to load one of the free magazines in the play app.

[Q] Nexus 4 randomly turning off, intermittently not being able to restart

Hi guys,
Not exactly the most positive of first posts but here we go. There's a problem with my phone that I can't find the solution for...
Essentially my phone randomly turns itself off (no power down sequence, almost as though the battery's being taken out if you know what I mean) and then it has difficulty in fully booting again. For some reason it also likes to revert my wallpaper back to the original as stock.
The first thing that I thought of was malware, with the wallpaper - so I tried a couple of anti-malware apps to no avail. As my device was rooted, I then flashed back to stock, locked and unrooted it and checked the behaviour. Again to no avail (then again I've never rooted/unrooted so this may have been done incorrectly). By the looks of it, the worst case scenario is a problem with battery connections/hardware...
So the question is have you guys come across this before? Is there a solution to this or is Google/LG going to have to give me a replacement?
Many Thanks.
Weird, I just had this happen couple hours ago, I was watching a video and close the app. I press the power button to put it to sleep. Just like 20 second later, I press the power to wake it and it don't do anything. I had to hold the power button to turn it on. I check the battery status afterward and it looks like it drop between 5-10 percent in the chart after it turn on. The battery must have failed or something. This also happen to my wife phone couple weeks back, although she had to do a hard reset(power+volume up and down) it have not happen again though.
Hello
First of all, welcome to XDA community!
Now, have you done anything with your phone? As in, root it? Flashed custom kernel? Flashed custom ROM? We would love to help, but you need to provide us what we need

Okay, here's what I had done when this all started:
- Rooted and unlocked.
- TWRP custom recovery
- Standard Kernel, no custom ROM.
I've reverted as much of this back to stock as possible through a nexus tool-kit, but it still has the issue. If I'm missing anything out let me know.

Did this happen before you had the phone rooted? Also did this happen one time only or happened multiple times? I also had this problem, but just turning off and not turning back on part. But that was only one time event and I believe it was because of the custom kernel.

This started yesterday, and I rooted it as soon as I got it 2 weeks ago, so I don't think the root has caused any issues. It's now happening rather often, to the point where it's unuseable

Well, after completely reverting the phone back to its stock version and pretty much everything else, it's still doing it - which surely points to a problem with the chip (or something). So, I've contacted google about a replacement and so far so good - got through in 5 minutes and sorted out the RMA and everything, should be delivered in the next few days.
Thanks for the help anyway. I'm going to avoid rooting this one for the time being to see how it behaves.
I experienced "random shutdowns" and even posted about it here. Turns out it was my belt holster that was somehow the culprit. I don't know if it was mashing some weird button sequence to turn off the phone, or if the magnet interfered or something else, but as soon as I got it out of that holster I had no more random shutdowns.
I doubt yours is the same problem but I thought I'd post mine.

Funny I had the same thing happen to me last night. I was using the phone put it down for a minute or two and then could not wake the phone. What was interesting was when I couldn't get it to turn on I plugged in into the charger and let it sit for a few hours. When I was finally able to restart it using the the power, vol button the battery was at the same level before the incident. In other words whatever happened prevented the battery from being charged. I am stock and rooted and haven't loaded any new apps in over 2 weeks

I have almost the same problem as the op but I do have a shut down sequence. It does randomly shut down itself. The first thing I got the phone I rooted it and it was fine working on modaco for 2 weeks then one day it kept shutting down upon boot until like 10 tries later I successfully got back in but lasted only a few mins and sometimes hours. Im gonna rma this pos and I hope I can get it replaced soon. I try it with stock rom and kernel then modaco with stock kernel then modaco with faux kernel. Same problem.
I had these problems earlier ... I just gave HARD RESET by pressing power key for more than 5 sec.
Then i figured, it was due to Undervolting ! and Processor going to a DEEP SLEEP all together !
So i removed UVing and it was cool since then ! ... Although my signature says the rest !
I bought my N4 about 2 weeks ago, and it has turned itself off 3 of the nights I've had it. I don't have any hard evidence, but I have a theory on why it's doing it.
At first I thought it was because I used a Motorola usb cord instead of the stock cord because I read some people's theories on the internet, but it happened again (twice) after using the stock cord.
It seemed like it only shut off if I left WiFi turned on when I went to sleep (even then it was still a random occurrence). I went into my advanced WiFi settings and noticed Wi-Fi Optimization was turned on with the text "Minimize battery usage when Wi-Fi is on". I thought it might be the problem, so I turned it off. I left WiFi on last night, and the phone was still on in the morning. Again, it is still a random occurrence even with WF on, so I'm going to leave WF on at night for a few days/weeks and see if it happens again. I'll post back with results.
If anyone else has already tried this or has figured out a solution, let me know.
The same happens several times a week with my nexus 4 running latest cyanogenmod. I will revert it to clean stock in a few days to see how it goes. I don't think that is a hardware problem but time will tell.

Don't know if anyone is keeping up or cares, but I wanted to update and say that this did not fix the problem. 4.2.2 also did not fix the problem. I guess I could try getting a new one from Google.
My wife and I are both having this problem. Hers is completely stock, I'm unlocked and rooted. I was hoping it would be fixed with 4.2.2, but if it hasn't then it maybe time to get replacement N4s
I can't imagine this issue is very widespread, since there have only been a few threads about it. Its a big nuisance especially because it usually happens at night when I'm expecting my alarm to go off at night.
I hadn't wanted to send for replacements since it seems like a software issue but I'm getting fed up.

Just had this problem occur with my N4 last night..... Phone is 2 weeks old.
Went to bed, plugged in the phone to charge [it was at about 50% or so, so not exactly low].
Woke up at 8.30 wondering why my alarm didn't go off at 7.30.... looked over and the phone was off.
It also didn't want to turn back on either. Took about a minute of holding in the power button for various amounts of time before it finally kicked to life [at 100% charge too].
This is going to be a real problem if this problem reoccurs. At home I have a clock radio but I travel a lot and rely on my phone to wake me up!
Here's hoping we can start to identify what is causing this issue. All I can add is that it is not low-battery related.
As stated in the sig. Phone is unlocked/rooted with stock rom.

Frequent Freezing and Reboots on 4APIA

On 10/17/16 I took the OTA to take me from the July Security patch to the September security patch, with build number G935TUVU4APIA.
With in the first day of the update I experienced the phone freezing on the home screen, then rebooting. Later on I found it had rebooted while in my pocket (prompted for pin and system up time was minutes). Ever since over past 6 days it has become frozen and rebooted multiple times a day. Anywhere 2 to 5 times a day doing various different things.
I have tried clearing all system and app cache since after the update. Unfortantely that has not helped at all. So what I would like to know is anyone else on this build experiencing these reboots, or was before and fixed it?
I'm trying to determine if its a bug with this build, cause I will be really annoyed if I have to go through the trouble of a factory reset, then find out it didn't help cause its an issue with this specific build. If some other stock people can confirm this build is not rebooting for them I will give factory reset a try.

Dang that sucks, worse time for it to fail when its supposed to wake you up lol! Thanks or the suggestion but I don't think its app related since it happens on home screen, in app drawer, in chrome, and in my pocket with screen off. Unless its an app in the back ground. But I haven't installed any new in past 5 days apps that I would say are uncommon that aren't supported well.
Edit: I just checked. Since the OTA I did install 1 app the day after. The Nexia app for smart thermostat that came with my new furnace. I don't think thats it since I can recall at least 1 reboot after the OTA and before that app. But just in case I will uninstall that app for a couple days just to test. Thanks!

I had a serious freeze/lock up last night. I am on the same build and NOT rooted. I even tried holding down the power button and the phone was unresponsive. Cap. keys stayed lit the whole time. After holding down for 45 sec or so it finally relented and rebooted. But this combined with random heat surges/ups really have me pissed.
Had the same issue. On u firmware now cuz i couldnt take it. One thing that seemed to help some was removing the sd card and wiping cache then rebooting. I let it run for a few hours then put in sd card. Seemed to help alot
I'm back to follow up with the results from uninstalling the only app I installed since the update. It actually almost went 24 hours without a freeze and reboot. I was starting to think it actually was the culprit. But then I had 2 freezes and reboot today.
So I have switched back to my Nexus 6P for a while. Thanks to those who also reported the same issue! Since other people are reporting the same issue it seems to be a bug in this build unfortunately. So here is to Samsung pushing out a fix soon. Until then I will be using my 6P. If they haven't fixed it in a couple weeks then I will probably flash to the U firmware too. What variant is the U firmware from anyways? The unlocked North America variant?
I installed the update and have been running it for the past four days with no problems to report thus far. If I get a reboot or any freezing I'll let you folks know. Perhaps try a factory reset.

I get a reboot twice a day. Sometimes the phone will freeze while I'm scrolling through my internet browser or it will reboot if I'm using the SAMSUNG branded car charger and Google Maps at the same time. Other times it'll just randomly reboot out of nowhere.
This is extremely frustrating. T-Mobile recommended that I get an exchange and I did get an exchange and the same day it rebooted on me. I called complaining that it's not a hardware issue and they told me to exchange the phone again. Smh.
This sucks especially since I use GPS a lot. This phone was/is perfect before the update.

Yeah... Carriers need to train their employees to be able to know how to tell the difference between a hardware and software issue. For example if a user reports something didn't happen until a recent update, then that should be an automatic sign to not waste that customers time with a pointless exchange.
