[Q] [NST] Force update to 1.2.1? - Nook Touch General

My Nook Simple Touch is on firmware 1.2 and has been rooted with NookManager. I downloaded the 1.2.1 update zip from the B&N website & copied it to the root directory of my Nook and have been patiently waiting for it to install for a week. Is there a way to force the upgrade or use CWM or NookManager to do it?

Did you try powering down/up your Nook?
CWM Recovery can install it too.
If you are using the original file, you might have to "toggle signatures".
I just strip off the first 0x1a3, 419 (dec) bytes off the file.
A standard zip file has "PK" as the first two bytes.

Something in the rooting process prevents the update from getting applied. The update will wipe out your root and system mods anyway so it might be easiest to recover back to stock, apply the update and reroot. If you back up your apps with Titanium Backup you can restore them afterward and its a pretty painless process.

Thanks, all sorted now

Op: just wondering why would you want to apply the update. What are the benefits? My nook is rooted w nookmanager and I'm quite happy the update fails ever time it tries.

Thanks! This worked, although stripping off the first few bytes was a bit too complicated for me.. I just unzipped and then re-zipped the files and then flashed that.

I would need a little help how exactly it worked. I'm in the same situation. I rooted with 1.2 with Nookmanager. Multitouch, Fastmode and NoRefresh and ezPDF are working fine, and I want to keep it that way.
How can I upgrade to 1.2.1. without going through the whole process again ? I have a Nookmanager SD with my backup and a separate CWM 2GB SD that I used to install the OC kernel for 174 and 166 earlier on. Also, of course I have the 1.2.1 update from B&N.
I guess I can install that zip with CWM, but how exactly ? I don't want to break my root if possible. I have already tried to go back to factory.zip with Nookmanager, then update to 1.2.1, but after restoring my Nookmanager backup I was back to 1.2
Thanks for help !

That actually worked..!
419 bytes stripped from the front, leaving the firmware zip file starting with "PK".
(I was wondering why I couldn't open it using the Windows explorer - it was because of the 419 bytes of the signature).
Thank you very much.

If you're in UK, the USA version download won't flash if you're rooted.
USA:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-Simple-Touch/379003175/
UK:
http://www.nook.com/gb/support/nook-simple-touch-glowlight-software-updates
other countries should goto support for their country at:
http://www.nook.com/support
If you're rooted take out the bytes (roughly about a paragraph) as Renate said before PK and save using a hex editor. Or unzip and zip as mentioned.
frhed free hex editor:
http://frhed.sourceforge.net/en/
If you're rooted , flash with CWM as just copying to your nook root might just get deleted, CWM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360994

In case anyone is struggling to apply the update, make sure you've put it in the *root* of the *NOOK* 'drive' when connected by USB I didn't read the instructions properly and put it in the root of the SD! Obviously, nothing happened for a fair while until I realised my error...

Not yet. We have to wait and see.
By the way, how about a "call for dev" to the people who rooted A500 in the first place?
Not yet, but could use some help
I captured the update.zip and rooted it but can't get it to run. I'm not sure if it only works if the manufacturer signs the update.zip because I can only sign with a test certificate, trying to get this resolved.
I have to get these Iconia 500 rooted as it is fubar'ng our fleet. We root and install a sales/inventory/delivery system in /system/app and then un-root. Therefore employees can reset them all they want and not have to set them back up and they can wipe them clean of personal data when they leave the company without fubaring the company application. Deploying via the market place cannot be done (we only want employees using the app) and using 'unknown sources' isn't a solution. Plus, most of our employees easily wipe them clean all the time as they play around and learn them. Having the application in /system/app solves every one of these issues. The ACER's update nukes everything is system. Why would they not just modify their applications and leave mine alone?
Thanks to ACER, these folks just deleted out all of our applications and data because all the employees said 'yes/ok' to the update. Now who won't do that?
So, I've got several here for testing and welcome anyone's ideas because they are junk or I will have to flash them back to 3.1 and remove the ability to do updates.
Thanks

EDIT: changed to second set of four files (5-8)!
First 4 files on that page are a rared version of stock 3.2.
Open rar1 and it will unrar all 4. Flash the tablets with it, but I'm not sure you can unroot it afterwards?
CWM - Not loadable is it?
This uses the clockwork recovery doesn't it? You cannot load the CWM unless your have root??? What I really need is to be able to use the stock recovery.
So how do you use CWM without out rooting? Sort of a catch 22?
Now I could download to 3.1 and then install CWM and then apply the update using the modified CWM, but that sort of is a long way around isn't it?

CWM_Root_Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1.part4.rar
My remarks on what I did when tried this out and it worked!
1.I downloaded the (4) files, extracted them to a new folder as .zip files.
2.Copied to my ext-sdcard in a folder
3. After the (4) files were installed as described above, I then booted into Recovery and installed each one individually. After each file I DID NOT "Reboot system now", but rather chose to install the next .zip until all (4) were installed.
4. Rebooted system. All my apps were still there. The only things I did have to do is root with Iconia Root app, install Superuser and set up my e-mail accounts again. When I ran an app that required root access, I simply had to allow access with Superuser.
Everything else was there as it was before the install and everything is working great. ! Did this 3 days ago and no issues!
so, can i download these 4 files, extract into the 1 large file, put on my ext-sd renamed as update.zip and flash from clockwork?

are you sure you are on the stock 3.2 recovery??
because as far as i know and correct me if im wrong, the 3.2 stock recovery does not give you the ability to chose which file you wish to flash. it just flashes the file "update.zip" file..
Also , just for clarification. If i do as previously mentioned to install this, will I still have clockwork recovery or will it flash he new Acer stock recovery?

DO NOT listen to this post (1 post wonder).
First off those four files are rar files that once you begin the extraction, will extract themselves into one large file. There is no way to flash those four files seperately.
Second, root and su are included in that ROM, so no need to root (as indicated in the title of the files).
Please don't Brick your device by listening to these directions!

Modified OTA2 Updates for Installation in ClockworkMod Recovery

I have modified several of the updates to be installed in ClockworkMod Recovery so that it will not overwrite CWM Recovery and should also preserve root. I still recommend protecting root using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper in case something goes wrong and it is always a good idea to make a nandroid backup in ClockworkMod Recovery before installing any update. Also after updating Titanium backup said that my su had the wrong permission and it wanted to correct it (I allowed it to fix it). I am not sure why this happened as I thought I set the permissions properly in the update but go ahead and run Titanium after updating and let it fix it for you if there is a problem. These updates will still check all of your system apps so you need to restore them (copying and pasting them back into the /system/app folder and setting the proper permissions with Root Explorer is one of the easiest ways to do this). You can also make your own modifications to the update and remove the checks if you like (some people have done this with no problems but one guy reported that android wouldn't boot after updating with no checks so I leave it up to you to decide for yourself). I posted instructions for modifying the update here. The changes I made to the update were to remove the Indigo check (because it was giving me an error) commented out the lines that delete the current recovery and install the new recovery, removed the line that deletes Superuser.apk, added an su file to the update so that it reinstalls su after deleting it, and finally added lines to symlink and set permissions for the su file.
Install instructions:
Protect root with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper (just in case)
Copy the proper update.zip to your external sdcard (if you are US or WE you must install 086 before 089)
Make sure your battery is well charged (having your battery die during the update would be very bad)
Turn off TpT and boot into recovery by turning on and repeatedly pressing the volume up key
Wipe cache partition
Make a nandroid backup (not necessary but highly recommended)
Select install zip from sdcard>choose zip from sdcard then browse to and select the update you downloaded here
Let the install run and then choose reboot system now in the CWR main menu
The first boot will take a long time, don't worry this is normal (if it takes more than 30min you may want to hold power to turn off and reboot again)
ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0037_0076_WE_CWR.zip
ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0086_US_CWR.zip
ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0089_US_CWR.zip
ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0086_WE_CWR.zip
ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0089_WE_CWR.zip

ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0089_SC_CWR.zip
ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0090_JP_CWR.zip
Flash at your own risk! I am not responsible if this totally bricks your tablet, breaks your root, or creates any other problems for you! Make sure that you install the correct version for your region.
Worked great for me. Thanks!
Is it also necessary to temporarily unroot before applying the update? Thanks again.
I don't believe I needed to do a tempory un-root to apply the updates. I just followed the instructions. I did have to power down during the first installation since it stayed in .. rebooting.. mode for 20 to 25 minutes. After powering down and rebooting, _86 was installed.
I did have to re-install Busybox to get LUKS Manager to work after the installation of 86 and 89.
Thanks, but I got in trouble with OTA2 by not unrooting first, and the OP is the one who helped me with it. I need to make sure before I make a move.
It should not matter, the update deletes and reinstalls su.
Thank you. I'll give it a try later today.
great thanks.

My market is working fine on OTA 2.5. Maybe you have two versions of the same app installed after updating (for example if you removed FlexT9 in system and installed the full FlexT9 keyboard from the market and then restored the system app to update). It could also be a problem due to the change over to the new Play Store as quyTam suggested. If all else fails a factory reset would likely fix the problem but then you will have to set everything up again.

The update file is a zip. There is no need to unzip it unless you are a developer and need to look at the contents or patch it. But there shouldn't be a password on the zip. I just downloaded it from the above link to the official site (su.barnesandnoble.com) and its a zip with no password as it should be. Perhaps your download was corrupted.

Use 'Clockwork' image to downgrade to FW 1.1
https://code.google.com/p/nst-recovery/downloads/list
steps:
1. burn 'sd_2gb_clockwork-rc2.zip' to microSD.
2. place 'nook_1_1_update_cwm.zip' in root directory of MicroSD.
3. boot CWR
4. "update" from .zip

If your nook came with 1.1 or 1.0 you could use factory.zip recovery and then update to 1.1.2 I used the RootManager Graphical Rooter to recover to factory. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351

Yesterday I updated my NST to Software Version 1.2.1 and found that it could no longer display some ebooks correctly, so I decided to downgrade it to v1.1.*, following the instructions from this link: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-E-Ink-Support/NST-1-2-0-update-Why-no-page-numbers-in-Contents/m-p/1416722#M3643.
Shortly, what I did is:
Inserted a uSD card burned with "noogie.img" into my (unrooted) NST, and then connected it to the computer via USB;
In Linux, replaced the original "factory.zip" (v1.2.1) with the new one (v1.1.5, link: http://web.mailpen.com/_download/bnFirmware/touch/factory-v1.1.5.zip);
Did a factory reset via the "8-reboot" technique.
After that, my NST could work properly. However, to my surprise, when I checked the Setting menu, I found there is a "*Development" item I've never seen before. It contains "Manage Applications", "Running services", "USB debugging", "Stay awake", "Auto Mount", "Android launcher" and "Widget Test" subitems. When I select "Android launcher" I see something similar to an Android home screen.
To my limited knowledge about Android, to root the device you should at least change the uRamdisk file. Could anyone explain to me what happened? Is my NST rooted?
Yes, your Nook is rooted.
Your "factory.zip" did not come out of any B&N factory.
Update zips contain uImage and uRamdisk.
Thanks for your reply, but I can't find any file named "uRamdisk" or "uImage" in factory.zip. Moreover, it's said that a rooted NST has battery drain problem because of the "cell standby" and "phone idle" processes. However my (possibly rooted) NST only consumes 1% power per day (wifi turned off). So I still can't figure it out.
P.S. The v1.1.5 factory.zip is the one shipped with NST w/ GlowLight, and I'm wondering is there a *Development menu in NSTG...

All the downloadable files on that site (www.mailpen.com and web.mailpen.com are my sites) came from:
1. Those that have the word "update" in them, came directly from the B&N site, and when used, should be applied as you normally would for an update.
2. Those that have the word "factory" in them, were directly extracted from partition #3 (the hidden factory restore partition) on the Nook Touch.
In all cases, there are no modifications from me.
What the prior poster did, should have worked. Note that a factory restore (the 8-reset method) does not clear the data partition.
@DeanGibson
Thank you very much for sharing these files! I am OK with the strange '*Development' menu now, since my NST works pretty well so far.
i need to downgrade from 1.2.1 to 1.1.5
excuse me but how did you replace the factory.zip, because my NSTG came with 1.2.1 ver and i want to downgrade to 1.1.5 . can i replace it through partition wizard. i tried to flash the zip file of 1.1.5 from mailpen through cwm , but did not work, i need help

iirc, simply replacing the factory.zip file is enough. All you need is an OS capable of reading NST's file system (if you use a Windows, a Ubuntu running in a VirtualBox is ok) and a "noogie.img" uSD card to boot your NST with. Find the original factory.zip and make a backup. Start nautilus as root (http://askubuntu.com/questions/98489/how-can-i-elevate-nautilus-privileges-to-move-or-copy-a-folder-as-root) and replace factory.zip with the new (old actually) copy. Do an 8-rebooting.
You'd better back up your NST first (use Roadkil's Disk Image or whatever) , especially the directory containing files `SerialNumber`, `DeviceID` and `HashOfPrivateKey`. The device might be bricked.
(I did it months ago so some details given above may be incorrect. do it at ur own risk. )

Follow the method #2 on this page: http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_restore_to_stock
A video on Youtube showing how to do a factory reset for Nook Color: http://youtu.be/_atl79ZcB_I
It's similar for NST.
where did you get the rooted factory.zip? i need one a rooted 1.2 factory.zip

how to i clear the data partition before doing a factory restore?
CWM has a selection for formatting partitions.
You could just delete everything using ADB under CWM.
Code:
cd /data
rm -R *

[Q] replacing factory.zip image for 8 failed boots

is there a reasonably easy way to replace the factory.zip? (partition 3?)
I have what must be an older color, that if I do the 8 failed boots, it reverts all the way back to software 1.0.0
I find that it wont auto update to 1.4.3.
I have to first apply a 1.2 update, before it will take the stock B&N 1.4.3
(or manually thru cwm apply a 1.3 for example)
its not a deal breaker, but I'd prefer a solution that isnt boot into linux/dd the partition
this is a unit I muck around with, testing various roms, and getting it back to stock just involves a few extra steps.
thanks!
The easiest way to get it back to stock is just to flash it directly back with CWM. Go to my NC Tips thread linked in my signature and follow item A15. I have a CWM flashable 1.4.3 there.
However if you want to change the factory zip in partition 3, I can walk you through how to do that. It basically means mounting p3 in a rooted operating system like CM and copying the new zip there.

I'd like to try that if you are willing. Thanks!
I think im pretty experienced.
I have done cm7 / cm10 / on colors/NT many times, have run all the possible scripts you might think of more than once to fix various issues on many colors
one thing Ive noticed on this one after resetting data to the new partition scheme,
that just sort of nags at me, (besides not having a restore to the way I like it from the 8 failed boots)
after Im at 1.4.3 and think Im done, if I do a factory reset from within the stock rom
going to the "factory" screen (and before skipping oobe) seems to flipflop between thinking its got sw 1.0.0 and 1.4.3 , however, the running version in both cases is 1.4.3.
thanks again
----- edit -----
addl info:
I have a CM7 loaded / with the NookColorUMS am able to mount the partition, but have no idea how to maneuver to it, or the format of the zip I'd be dropping in it. (I assume its just a factory rom renamed) On the tablet, cant seem to find the partition after its mounted in either file manager program I've tried, and I've forgotten any real linux/Unix skills I used to have... and it would appear its not usable on the Windows side.
The zip to use is the one I referenced above in item A15. Just rename it factory.zip.
And since you have the UMS utility, mount p3 in the first section. Then plug in your USB cable to Windows and it should show up as a drive. Look at it with Windows Explorer. You can tell if you are there by seeing the factory.zip. Backup that one to your PC in case something goes wrong. Then copy the new factory.zip on the drive replacing the old one. Be careful with the other files there, especially the rombackup.zip. That is critical and needs to stay there. (In fact back that up to your PC too).
That's it, you're done. Next 8 failed boot you should be on 1.4.3.
Edit: You know instead of doing the 8 failed boot to get back to stock, just do a nandroid backup with CWM while you have stock on it and then you can use that backup for restoring to stock. Much easier.

Yeah, this is where the plan goes south,
anything mounted in UMS doesn't seem to be translated properly for Windows. I get a "you must format the disk" but no additional usable mapped drives.
the internal partitions in the version of cm7 UMS I have are all down below, in the 2nd section
do I have to mount the "big" extended partition first? then in the second tab of UMS the factory p3? (ill try it in a few)
No, don't do that. I'll give you alternate instructions.
Go to Terminal Emulator in CM7 and set for superuser (type su enter). Then type these commands.
mkdir /factory
mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /factory
The go to /factory with your root file manager.
Proceed as earlier instructed.
Did you see my edit above?
Edit: and the reason your drives are not showing properly in Windows is you must activate UMS in CM7. Pull up your notification area and tell it to allow access after you plug in the cable

the su/terminal thing is just what I need I think. will report back in 5

Oh, I have no trouble getting em back to stock, and "close" to perfect, but I could sell this unit and 6 months from now I wanna be able to tell the user just do this ( 8 factory failed) , and its good to go, and Im not supporting a rebuild to stock 1.0, then 1.2, or a cwm flash.
Edit2:
re: " Edit: and the reason your drives are not showing properly in Windows is you must activate UMS in CM7. Pull up your notification area and tell it to allow access after you plug in the cable "
Yea, Im doing that. Does one have to disable debugging or something too?
Its not a big deal at all, just didn't have it committed to memory and hasn't been necessary to this point to access the protected partitions.

if you sell or give away your unit, be sure to erase and deregister with stock so it is removed as your device on the B&N servers. Otherwise the new user will not be able to register it. And you know stock recovery must be installed before the 8 failed boot works, right?
Also see my edit above about how to fix ums..... Yes you must disable debugging.

Hi, I did the whole process twice , just to be sure before coming back... 2nd time was with a newly downloaded copy of the signed A15 zip
Are you sure the factory recovery wants the signed zip file and not the stock?
after 8 failed boots it does a data reset, then tried the factory image reinstall but the factory image reinstall part fails about 1/3rd of the way through
---
had to wing it on the mounting / copy a little as just running terminal put me in a read only file system
but im 100% positive I Installed the signed1.4.3. into factory (backed up the 1.0.0 factory.zip first)
just noting , I DID use the repartition scripts on this prior, setting it to the "new" 5gb data / 1gb media
but it seems to me that the stock recovery isnt liking the signed zip file

That is possible since I modified it. Go get a clean one from B&N. Go their support page and look for update. There will be a link to a big file that ends in .npk. Download that and rename to factory.zip.

It seems the 1.4.3 update zip from B&N isn't suitable as a factory.zip
neither the signed or unsigned works
I've grabbed 2 factory zips from other units
1.2.0 and 1.3.0 and copied them into factory, and they both work as expected on the 8 failed boots
I didn't get the complete result that I wanted , but good enough.
Thanks again for your help leapinlar, It's appreciated.
Could you put a custom rom as a factory.zip? Just a thought. It'd be cool to rollback to a stable rom like cm7 if something in a cm10/11 nightly goes wrong.
