If you have a question that isn't on this list ask it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2082652
[Q] Can I get this on my phone or tablet etc.?
[A] Don't ask this here, ask in your phone's specific forum.
[Q] What's the point of having another Linux distro?
[A] That's just like saying why have Ubuntu and why have mint? It is all preference on which one you like the best.
[Q] Is steam supported?
[A] It is unknown whether steam will make an app. They might make the one like they have on android.
[Q] Will this support ext3/ext4 file systems?
[A] It will most likely support ext3/4 file systems
[Q] what's the lock screen like and will it have one?
[A] No confirmed lock screen, but they have confirmed a welcome screen
[Q] Can we install on any device like Ubuntu PC?
[A] You have to port it to work on your device.
[Q] Will they update every six months like the PC?
[A] they will update it, but not sure if it is going to be every six months.
[Q] Will It support android apps?
[A] Unless they make a wine for Ubuntu mobile that loads android apps than no.
[Q] Will their be Google native apps such as gmail, maps, Google voice, gtalk, calendar, contacts, etc?
[A] It can run the website as a separate app, but not confirmed as an individual app.
[Q] Can it run Ubuntu PC apps?
[A] No, someone could make an app of them.
[Q] What's the UI (user interface) like?
[A] this video will show you

[A] Yes.
[Q] Will there be ways to over clock & UV?
[A] Yes
[Q] Any plans for android emulator?
[A] Someone will have to develop it
[Q] Tethering?
[A] Yes.
[Q] App store?
[A] Yes.

No. Shuttleworth says it's a welcome screen not a lock screen, and the welcome screen is shown in the videos.

I get what you're trying to say, that some third party would need to port Dalvik etc, but such an app would be unrelated to WINE. WINE is for translating Win32 API calls to Linux API calls. It has nothing to do with bringing the Dalvik (Java) runtime environment to Ubuntu Mobile.
[Q] Will their be Google native apps such as gmail, maps, Google voice, gtalk, calendar, contacts, etc?
[A] yes

How do you know there will be native apps? Canonical has shown icons for Gmail and Maps, but in the videos that group of icons was described as web apps that can run independently of the browser and make system calls, not native apps.
[Q] App store?
[A] Yes.

More specifically, the Ubuntu Software Center that has been around for a while now.

Shuttle's words seemed to indicate it would be the same release, a single image not multiple releases.

[Q] Can it run Ubuntu PC apps?
[A] No, those are 32 bit OS apps while your phone is not. But someone could make an app for them.
I think this is somewhat incorrect and has nothing to do with 32bit or not, but the architecture the applications have been compiled for. (ARM is btw a 32bit CPU, just not a x86 32-bit )
As far as I see, the device will be running the armel/armhf version of Ubuntu, and additionally it will have Xorg running. Which will most likely mean that MOST of the applications in the Ubuntu armel repositories could be available on the phone. Obviously they will not be customized for phone usage, but if someone takes on that task, I don't see why we couldn't have desktop apps running on the phone.
There are notable exceptions, for example 3D games requiring OpenGL instead of OpenGL ES, binary-only applications without ARM support, and no, WINE won't work either because it does not emulate the x86 architecture (thus the WINE = Wine Is Not an Emulator) but instead only translates win32 related API calls.

I thought Ubuntu had switched to Wayland by now? Is that not the case? It's been a while since I closely followed desktop Linux news.

Not yet. I think it might be coming in the 13.xx releases but as of 12.10 they are still using Xorg.

Couldn't resist.. Updated your list a little ..
[Q] Can I get this on my phone or tablet etc.?
[A] Don't ask this here, wait until it is actually released and wait for a developer to pick it up.
[Q] Is Ubuntu Phone opensource?
[A] Yes, and the source will be released by the time the Nexus images arrive, you will find them on Launchpad just like any other Ubuntu project.
[Q] What's the point of having another Linux distro?
[A] If you ask, you wont understand.. ubuntu phone is not android and android is not linux. its that simple..
[Q] Is steam supported?
[A] unknown, for sure not yet.. but on http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone/operators-and-oems read "The developer’s favourite OS" there is a hint.
[Q] Will this support ext3/ext4 file systems?
[A] Ubuntu Phone uses Linux so it will most likely support ext3/4 file-systems.
[Q] what's the lock screen like and will it have one?
[A] No confirmed lock screen, but they have confirmed a welcome screen.. IMHO, this may be a smart move from Canonical due to Apple and Google's current patents on lock screens.
[Q] Can we install on any device like Ubuntu PC?
[A] Smartphones are embedded non standardized systems, you always have to port it to work on your device.
[Q] Will they update every six months like the PC?
[A] they will update it, but not sure if it is going to be every six months.
[Q] Will It support android apps?
[A] Unless someone will port the Dalvik Virtual Machine (which android is written on) to Ubuntu Phone that can run android apps than no, its not that easy.
[Q] Will their be Google native apps such as gmail, maps, Google voice, gtalk, calendar, contacts, etc?
[A] Ubuntu Phone can run Webapps, you will be able to use GMail, Calendar, Maps like you would in a webbrowser, not nice but its up to google to natively support Ubuntu Phone . GTalk can be used with the Ubuntu messaging app, as it uses the open XMPP protocol like jabber. If there is a native email app, then you will be able to use GMail natively with IMAP.
[Q] Does Ubuntu Phone have WhatsApp?
[A] No, see here.. Go ahead and start spamming the developers for Ubuntu Phone Support.
[Q] Can it run Ubuntu PC apps?
[A] Only if docked to Dektop-Mode, but developers could easily make an QML interface to almost any existing software available.
[Q] Is Desktop-Mode supported on the Nexus image?
[A] Its the developer device, so yes.
[Q] What's the UI (user interface) like?
[A] this video will show you
http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?featur...top_uri=/watch?v=cpWHJDLsqTU&feature=youtu.be
[Q] Does Ubuntu handle multiple cores well?
[A] Yes, it's Linux .. But its up to the knowledge of developer's to handle multiple cores (threading) in 3rd party Apps.
[Q] Will there be ways to over clock & UV?
[A] Yes, again its Linux..
[Q] Any plans for android emulator?
[A] What, why emulate? Its based on the same platform (Linux).. But if you mean Dalvik that is something else..
[Q] Tethering?
[A] on the Kernel side probably yes, on the UI side unknown.
[Q] App store?
[A] Not by the time of the released Nexus image in Feb. (yet), but I heard it is in the Works...
[Q] Does it use the Debian package system (.deb) ?
[A] Yes. and that is awesome..
[Q] Dose Ubuntu Phone have Navigation?
[A] No. and that sucks.. so don't cry if you get lost ..

So, in your opinion, can the developers create a way to run ubuntu pc apps, without the dock? ? Like an "emulate docking"?? Or the only way is to make QML interface?
Thanks!

Sure.. From my understanding and what sounds logical to me is that Desktop and mobile apps will co-exist on the device, but I am sure canonical implemented something to difference them from a starting point, that is what i understood so far... so yes undocked means the only way to start and access them would be over a QML interface.. But its open so no one will be stopped to create a interface in QML using the Ubuntu phone api that accesses the libs and functions from current open source desktop apps..
We will see....

[Q] Question about android plarform and app developing

Hi,
I'm using Motorola Milestone. A lot of times I have to update a new version of an app which has several bug fixes for Nexus One. As I know that the Milestone and Nexus One are running the same Android OS version (2.1). I just wonder why a normal application (such as Calendar or Note) must be dependent on hardware? I mean the same application version that works on Milestone but some of its features don't work in the Nexus. Let's take an example of Windows OS. We can install Firefox, Winamp or even some low level interacting program like anti virus in any computer (Lenovo, Acer,...) as long as they're running the same Windows version (like Vista). Is it a down side of Android platform?
I think I have a similar question. On my work the have a winmo databas app that work like an workordersystem. Can this program run in Android by any chance or has it to be rewritten to work on a Android platform?
I managed to install my application on the SD card by using to apkInstaller.
I thus wanted to test the installation from Android Market... My application does'nt settle down on the SD card but on the telephone... Why ? Nevertheless I added in the manifest the option android:installLocation="preferExternal" !
Needs to make other thing ?
Thank for your answers !
It's mostly localization.
Either developers ask google to make their app available only for certain devices, or certain manufacturers ask google to make only certain apps available.
If an app is built against the SDK, then it's compatible with all devices that share that SDK version.

[Q] Firesheep app for Andriod

Hello all,
Its been a long time no speak on this forum for a while, I have finally made the jump from WM (HTC LEO/SE X1) to Android on a Dell Streak. Admittedly I am still waiting on a stable o2 sanctioned version of Froyo to put SENSE UI on!
My question here relates to Firesheep, an add on for Firefox that allows packet capture on public WiFi networks. I was wondering if anyone could port this application to android as a stand alone App, or if anything else similar had been developed?
I hope someone can give me an answer at least to the feasibility of this request.
+1
I too would love to know hehe
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
It would require drivers for the wireless chipset in the phone to be put in promiscious/monitor mode to capture packets, as far as I know, neither is possible, unfortunately.

Couldn't it run in firefox mobile
monitor mode in galaxy S
There is an app available in market called pixie who get the promiscuous mode for the wifi interface. I'm able to capture packets in Samsung Galaxy S (GT-I9000) with the app installed.
Now we're waiting for firesheep realease for android... it's impossible to install the XPI in Firefox mobile beta...
Yeah, I tried porting the XPI over to firefox mobile, but it wont work without a packet capture utility, like WinPcap, which is used with the normal Firefox Win version.
I would be definately interested in seeing where this goes though...

It is also working in OSX so I guess libpcap should be enough to use it. By reading this http://seclists.org/tcpdump/2010/q1/98 it seems that there is support for Android. However you will need root access to use it.
This thread, discussing Shark for Root app, refers to a lot of functions that firesheep uses: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725692
Perhaps using libpcap/tcpdump (as janfsd suggested), we can port this over. Root is a must though, true...
any updates?
i need this for my N1
Tanks
Bumping for an update on this project!
Found this thread in google. Try http://faceniff.ponury.net/ I've wrote it yesterday I wrote it to sniff only facebook accounts but it can be easily modified to other services.
Hello!!
This is awesome! wooow! I don't mean the fact that you can steal web session profiles,
but the fact that an Android application can open an interface e.g. WIFI and realise sniffing -
network monitoring without being run as root or system. To do so, an application should be
signed with the platform's key : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6010796/run-secure-api-calls-as-root-android
How is this possible?? I am really wondering about that. Some time ago I tried to port
jNetPcap, so as to use it in an Android application for monitoring the WIFI. I successfully
ported it but I couldn't read the list of Android interfaces from its API and realise web
monitoring.. (see here for details: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5966603/jnetpcap-on-android-problem-with-findalldevs-method,
http://jnetpcap.com/node/792)
I am really wondering how faceniff faces this problem??
e.g. Shark for Android runs an instance of libpcap in the background and derives the
appropriate information from the pcap traces..
What faceniff do to get the information it wants, e.g. the web sessions?? I am
really curious about that.. Any ideas?
faceniff runs as root....
Yes, but how is it possible to make an application that runs as root?
There is no Android permission you can use in Android manifest to give you
such privileges.. Even other Android applications that run only in rooted phones
cannot open an interface an capture traffic, and for this reason they run in the
background a tcpdump and process the pcap traces it produces (e.g. Shark for
Android).
is anybody here that knows how faceniff can capture packets??
I know how it works because I wrote it
It has a binary file which lies in /data/data/net.ponury.faceniff/
Then the java app executes "su" (to gain root permissions) and executes that binary file. And it grabs results from the binary showing them on the screen. Hope it helps.

WOW that is one big list you have there my friend. But it seems to me you want your firefox to be an android phone.....
Don't get me wrong most of the apps you mentioned are "top of the class" apps in an android phone.
But I believe this os isn't android....yes if some of the above apps devs want to port their apps to firefox that's fine by me, it would be great though to see new devs working in this os even if that spell out building apps that in a sense do or have the same functionality like their android counter parts.
But rest assured you would see a lot of junk apps just like android has, and by junk I mean add supported apps, and a lot of wanna be coders that make unusefull apps with adds just to make easy bucks!
For me the list is simple:
1. A decent multi email client (if only Mozzila haden't kill thunderbird project it would had been cool to see a thunderbird app in firefox os).
2. A decent native file manager (not like the native one that samsung phones have)
3. A VLC port.
4. A songbird port.
5. An Open/Libre Office port
You see where I am getting with this!?
All the rest are cosmetic addons sort of speak with apps that have no intelligent functionality.

Actually, if they were to make the same thing from the iOS app, after all, the FFOS browser is just an interface, so a FFOS Chrome would be able to sync and all that stuff easily.
----------
I'm making a file manager, it's on github too. I'm still looking out for the best solutions for it right now, because the APIs are still too limited, so the best I could get was actually getting all files and parsing the folders from their names. Empty directories, for instance, will be invisible, hence the file manager would only be helpful to open downloaded files and maybe some basic interaction.

Meh, just need a JS interface to access native content, no need for another interpreted language like PHP.
There are two apps that I'll be looking to install on my future Firefox OS device which will make the device fully functional for my needs:
OneBusAway - http://onebusaway.org/
Car2Go - http://car2go.com/
As far as app ideas goes, I'd like to see:
1.) A simple app that tells me if I should bring a rain-coat today based on when I'm out working and when I'm home, either as a stand-alone app or integrated with a weather app.
2.) Javascript playground! What wouldn't be more fun than writing Javascript on a Javascript-driven device? (A tad bit of sarcasm in there, but it'd still be fun (well, it depends on the person)!)
And for already existing apps on other platforms, I want:
1.) Duolingo - Free language education app (I believe that it's already written in HTML5+CSS+JS and is just wrapping it).
2.) Google Keep - Google's non-stock note app for Android.
3.) Google Calendar - I can't exactly replace it, at this stage of long-term usage...
As much as I love the Firefox OS project, I'm still a Google fanboy and I still use most of their services (fully knowing and accepting that Google logs everything I do).
Ringtone Maker and GO Battery Saver & Widget would be nice to see.

your mount point..i use /data/local/mnt/linux
the scripts i use /data/local/mnt
simple you will need to edit the scripts if u edit ur paths..
ill share my stuffs if theres any interest in this.
dunno if this has been done on sgs2 using just scripts but yh
ive managed to get ubuntu13.04 running with full multitouch support using mtrack i use lxde/2d-unity
this approach uses android framebuffer instead of using a vncserver.
Concept/Goal: use android hardware to run linux without vnc and full hardware support...its christmas soon!
so we go a safe way and mount a img file and loop and chroot and mount necessary android stuff i.e /dev /proc /tmp-to help speed up system! and mount all sdcards.
then we kill android-the-framebuffer-hog
and start our xsession,
anyone interested in helping me?
i have the scripts and image, just need more nuerons!
to do is (alot)
Working:
Framebuffer >> full gamma and .mhz settings safe
Wifi
Bluetooth
Reboot to andoid and umount rootfs on log out
Mouse
Multitouch tap is click, double tap is ?grab window to move it, two fingers for right click, three to scroll
Screenshots
Charging
Sdcard
MicroSd
Keyboard >> virtual
Theres alot but its hard to summerise lol
Not Working (WIP)
get sound working completely (evrythings working except last output part) alsamixer, pulseaudio all work..just the last bit..so no sound.
figure out why system_bus_socket connection refused?
why dbus isnt being used but starting ok?
Landscape mode mouse axis. (i can rotate the display but the mouse axis are wrong.. up=right down=left) (portrait is fine)
camara
gpio-keys (hardware buttons)
calls
text messaging.
OTG USB (i made one so im assuming its that that doesnt work simply tweak to the xorg.conf to swap from touch to mouse..)
DRI & DRI2
GL_OES_EGL_image for 3d
have to use a virtual keyboard until running android apps in linux is figured out--ahem (i use matchbox-keyboard)
logon screen works but the keyboard is a issue. (virtual keyboard only starts once logged in. so no logon yet just auto logon)
you can still use ssh and vncserver if you wanted to..
any interest ill share my scripts...
as i said im not the only person to chroot imgs, but i havent seen a thread on getting it running natively on sgs2 without uboot or repartioning anything.
unless u completely recompile the linux os whilst inside of it, i.e adding vmlinux.img should be safe enough. works for me
anyway been a busy with this and im not a pro developer just a seasoned addict, thus the call for arms!
peace!
some screenshots
and you expect me to share my work when none of you have any input..phhhhhaaa
EDIT >> i was how you say suffering from a spot of pink eye! Strange strange thought patterns = WEIRD REMARKS lol

Interesting.
May I ask what are you using for? I mean, which killer app in Ubuntu you can't replace with an Android one?
Moreover, I have noticed an X server on the Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.darkside.XServer)
Using it, instead of killing Android, may allow some more integration with the Android environment (e.g. you could still receive calls while using your ubuntu stuff).
Another improvement would be to use multiple consoles (you know, Ctrl-Alt-Fx stuff) to have both environments running
Just my 2ç

i mean to free up surfaceflinger and the framebuffer and send android into a slumber?so we can use it for our xsession. not KILL PERMANETLY
its like a chroot jail free no vnc something??
using vnc will allow u to still have android on in the background for calls and what not but thats chrooting a image to a mount point and running a app. awsome but i got bored with that..much perfere native input.
Search for linuxonandroid by zachthespack hes been dealing with chrooting linux for a long time and has a good application and a healthy stock of img files for you to use, plus a good how to. http://www.linuxonandroid.org Download from play store.. search 4 linuxonandroid
...thats not a bad idea zavorrax about the X11 app..
although running a third party app to use the framebuffer seems pointless when u can use the devices one!
wouldnt u rather have a true linux os in your pocket rather then a clever spin off of it, dont get me wrong i love android and its easy moddding.. linux is far better though.. this project im doing is after all, on a android device.
android root is always 0 ... root = / .... android apps are the users...if that makes sense?
linux uses users who log in..so root still has the initial setup of the os incase a user messes up, root can reset it with relative ease.
so in order to use linux for a vnc free linux, (root is in my opinion just like a programme.) needs to also be 0
thus, night night android..
its hard to explain, its linux and android?
basically the only way i can explain this is its the same as a chroot of a distro BUT instead of using vnc/X11 apks as the only way of having a GUI, we can optionally use the android framebuffer..fb0...
this thread wasnt ment to be a how-to just to see if theres any intrerest out here.
ill make a proper how to with all the basics needed.
as i said theres alot of these projects across the android platform, people trying too turn android back to linux/running linux.
u can pretty much use any img used for vnc or create your own for this.
theres a lot ubuntu/arch/debian/kali/backtrack..etc..etc
i initially add a file to my new img and apt-get a few things, run a few commands to change the img for my device then only need to execute my script,on the fly, hello linux desktop why not!
theres alot of debugging thats why im seeing if anyone is interested in this and would like to help/participate
i initially started using vnc years ago but got fed up with having to run a handful of scripts in this app and then find and add my ports and set passwords in another app, all using important cpu and power, so i thought why not make it all into one easy script.sh.......can of worms...
fruition was glimpsed so i continued.
just use it bcos i can
oh yeah and i say kill/sleep android, its all there..just not emulated/running a instance..sort of packed away in a box.(sleeping lol)
until i/someone can debug compatability for things like phone or proximity sensor then inside the linux GUI theres no support because it hasnt been setup/coded
thanks.

[Q] [Discussion] What Apps you need for Firefox OS ?

Ehm.. Hello.. I am Ahmed Nefzaoui.. I am a Mozilla Community member.. From Tunisia.. and a Mozilla Official Representative.
No one denies Firefox OS needs more Apps.. OR let's say needs more well performing Apps.. That's what I am aiming at making true.. Or making part of it true.. That is why I am asking around:
What Apps do you want to see on Firefox OS marketplace? Maybe the question should be: What apps you miss from Android or iOS that you want in Firefox OS?
Please list as many Apps as possible. Thanx!
A SSH client
Well, I am a sysadmin, not a developer.
Try port FirefoxSSH to Firefox OS
Calendar and address book app with full caldav and carddav support.
CPU control or something like this
Great ones But to be honest.. I was expecting kind of apps like productivity, utilities, news, weather + some style guides, custom UIs..
Remote desktop to windows machine.
Multimedia apps like NetFlix, Hulu, HBO Go, etc.
Launchers, so you can pick and choose the feel of the phone, etc.
How about "Personal Accounting Software" or like this?

How about a fully customizable open source (!) dictionary software with full (!) support for StarDict?
Whatsapp. None other needed. I have sent a request to the developers but no response as yet. Rest not that necessary...

I was browsing around and saw this thread. Good timing too!
I have been thinking a lot about Firefox OS and how it may be the best hope at open source seeing as how Google is slowly taking backing away from open sourcing and making things rely on their closed APIs.
Anyway, I've given it some thought and I've realized that for Firefox OS to ever succeed, it will really be up to the app developers that choose to port or write apps, and lastly OEMs.
I'm not sure the people got the idea as they're listing forms of apps that are non essential or third party entertainment, that will eventually make its way over once the OS gains numbers.
Netflix, emulators, games ...would be nice but not essential to my mobile device as a productivity device. I would love if all my apps could be ported, but that's being too hopeful.
Bare bones, at the minimum, these are the most essential things:
1) A good simple note taking app. Nothing fancy. Think of AK Notepad or ColorNote
2) An office suite like OfficeSuite by Mobile Systems. & A good PDF reader with annotation support like ezPDF Reader
3) A good ebook reader with multi format support, like Cool Reader or Aldiko
4) A Google Voice dialer app (GrooveIP) + SIP and VOIP capabilities
+ A built-in text/messaging app would beat any third party options
5) A good email and contact system. This is a must have. I want to see easy transfer of Gmail and Outlook contacts + no frills push notifications.
6) An intuitive stocks app. I want to be able to gains / loses and real time prices. Lock screen widget of this would be nice.
7) Maps + Navigation (This a must)
It doesn't have to be Google. Although it would be preferred.
8) News/RSS reader + an app like pocket or read it later. + Podcast support
+ A forums reader like Tapatalk
Bonus...
If you guys could get devs or companies on board...
Dropbox
Pandora
Microsoft's recently released remote desktop or another alternative like Splashtop
Might be moot, but maybe you guys can work together with Adobe to port Flash (I know it's a long shot given they called it quits on mobile)
whatsapp. zello, line,viber hangouts...

A MUST for me: Spotify
Not so neccesary: Instagram, Netflix, Photoshop Express, maybe Google Music, Snapchat, native Foursquare, Facebook Messenger...
For me the most needed smartphone apps are (not in this order.) : mail clients, chat clients, internet browser, navigation/maps, file manager, ssh/sftp clients, conversation recording (I'm using it very seldom, but it is a quite nice, almost important feature for me.), camera, sms , smart keyboards are quite nice also, notifications, calendar / task planners, video players... That's it I think.

Before to get Apps,we need an Excelent App-Caching(the most important part in such OS) and the best Responsiveness we can get.
About Apps,i think you guys(Mozilla) should do a Campaign to incite/stimulate developers to port their existing apps to Firefos OS(i hope all Packaged apps,at least near all of them)so you won't have the need to code,or other stuff related.
I actually own an Alcatel one Touch Fire..as main phone, and i think this will be very handly,i have this hope in Mozilla.
We need an Official channel directly with the our mother(Mozilla) to have upgrades for our phones, cause carriers are going to do a Bottle-neck effect on our phone software, and to do this ,the best choice is to get prebuilded-builds,probably it's hard but not all the people can follow that loooong Wiki on how-to-build-it-your-self.
Take the idea to implement Node-Js,i think it will be helpful this guy already doing something http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2374160
As Google and the others company,Mozilla need to do simple way to take care of his Users
about apps: OpenVpn,SSH,PC-remote controlling(i'm thinking about a Gnome-Mozilla Collaboration
If you ask me, Firefox has had "apps" almost from the beginning. They are called "addons" (or, before that, extensions) and they handled all sorts of tasks which, prior to that, had only been possible as standalone applications on your desktop.
So consider my disappointment in finding out that all these addons are gone from the Firefox OS browser. They cannot be installed, as far as I can tell. There is not even any Adblock Plus. To me, this is insane, because the addons are the Firefox browser's greatest strength. Can someone explain this to me?
Graphic calculator will be a nice addition
Screen dimmer/ color editor (to make it look more green or red or anything)
adblock?
Hei Azuz !did you read this?
we all replyed to you,can you show to us a conversation about you and this topic to Mozilla?
