Guys, I desperately need help. I followed this guide to install CM7.1 nightly into my Defy and at the end I got the CM7 logo loop. Based on the guide, I took out the battery and put it back and now it's stuck at the small "Google" logo. I took out the battery again and went to the system recovery to wipe cache/factory reset. I got bunch of "mount" cache errors (command, log). I then went to the custom recovery and did the wipe cache again, this time beside "mount" cache error, there were some "open" cache errors. I did the wipe one more time and all of these errors gone. Booted it up again, and it still stuck at the "Google" screen so I went into the custom recovery trying to wipe dalvik cache as the guide said. I selected that option but nothing happened. No question asked to confirm the wipe and all it did was a short blink screen and the screen stayed the same.
Any helps would be highly appreciated !!!
That sounds a bit tricky to me, but first things first.
The first boot after installing CM7 can take a while (some minutes) since all the dalvik cache and other things has to be built. Taking out the battery during that is somewhat risky I think. After the first boot, the system starts pretty fast.
The best guess for you (at least that is what I would try) is:
go to recovery, clear dalvik cache and cache. If you have not installed CM7 before, i would also recommend to clear data as well (ok you lose you data but I hope that you were not doing it without a backup).
Then I would reflash cm7 and try again.
since you had the cm7 boot scree, I believe you have no kernel problem...
by the way, do you know what version your initial rom was?
I think it`s better to flash it from scratch:
1) Flash your previous rom with RSD
2) Root + cwm recovery
3) Cyan
(and if I were you - I would do wipe from stock recovery after 1st step and wipe from custom recovery after 3 step)
Yes, as Iddqd2 suggested just flash stock froyo using RSD Lite and then go all over for CM7 method of installation.

When I tried to install the latest gapps through CWM, it froze at the starting applications part.
I force restarted it, seeing that there was no change for a while.
When I restarted the phone, it kept on rebooting, with limited functionality, so I downgraded to CM9.
An error message pops up which says with Encryption Unsuccessful. A reset button was available, but didn't help.
I then re-upgraded to CM10, but the phone has limited functionality.
After researching the problem, I realised that the /data partition is not mounted as it is probably corrupted.
Is there any fix to this problem? Will flashing a sbf recreate the /data partition?
Please advise as the phone is basically useless without /data (no apps and constant reboots)

Hi Buddy,
I went through the same process last evening, earlier i was on 2nd boot then it was very slow hence I decided to move to CM9 for better UI and good battery life. but while doing so my phone also got encrypted.
I did following and installed CM9 yestrday night.
Removed SD card, read it through computer (CArd reader) and put CM9 in one folder along with GAPPS.
Charged my battery till green light pops up.
Entered the SD card again and then started the phone in Custome Recovery.
Full data Wipe
Dalvik Cache wipe
Install CM9 and Gapps.
again clear Cache and dalvik and reboot.
It should work, let me know if it doesnt work post that as well.

If the /data partition is corrupted (which I believe it is), will this still work?
Also, did you get any "Can't mount /cache/recovery/command" errors in CWM at anytime.

remove SD card, log into Stable recovery mode. wipe data / factory reset and try rebooting.
if problem still persist, read your phone through RSD and flash CM7.2 file. let me know if you need link for the same.

Boot to recovery and turn on adb (in Advanced). Open a shell on the phone through adb from a PC. Try to find out if data is mounted, and if so what filesystem type it uses:

If /data is corrupted it will not be mounted. On my phone /data and /cache are formatted ext4, which is only supported in the latest CM10. If yours happens to be formatted ext4 as well and you want to go back to CM9 you'll have to reformat both to ext3. If /data is corrupted you can also reformat the filesystem as you don't seem to have data worth keeping on it anyway (seeing that you talk about doing a full SBF flash to 'recreate the /data partition'). This can be done manually or - if you have not nuked the scripts installed by CM10 - using one of the scripts made for that purpose. Those scripts live in /system/bootmenu/script:

If you have access to these scripts you can just run format_ext3.sh to reformat /cache and /data in ext3:

Once you have formatted /data and /cache you should be able to install CM9 - no need for any SBF flashing unless your phone is really messed up (as in 'deleted the stock kernel' or something like that).

Hi,
I tried flashing DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_CN_SIGN_UCADEFYEMARAB1B50AA009.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNGIBRIRD15_P015_A030_Service1FF.sbf.
The flash was successful, but the phone looping the boot animations, not actually loading Android.
I have also lost access to CWM and recovery.
Please help.

adb is the Android Debug Bridge, a program running on both the phone as well as your PC which makes it possible to access your phone (through either a command line shell or some GUI-thing layered on top of it).
Are you also new to Linux and/or computers in general? In that case you're probably better off flashing the phone as detailed, even though that takes way more time and does involve more risks. If you feel comfortable running commands from a command line I'd advice you to install the ADK (Android Development Kit) on your PC, get adb working and run the commands as I explained. That way you regain access to your phone without all the hassle and risks involved in flashing all the way from SBF. Both methods work, so the end result should be the same.
I'm intentionally not going into excruciating detail on the task of installing and running adb as I don't think you should use your phone as a guinea pig to start experimenting with adb - for that use the emulator which comes with the ADK.

how were u able to flash any file... neither the bootmenu nor the recovery is working... please revert back.
I found my data and cache partition corrupted, and i dont know why.
I don't know anyway to fix it but do SBF flash (so far I am doing the THIRD SBF flash today, really frustrating)
[edit] why i think data and cache partition corrupted:
1. I couldn't mount data and cache and psd partition in recovery, but i can mount sdcard (and can't unmount system partition, is it supposed that system can't be unmounted?)
2. when i booted up the system(Kayant's AOKP), the size of internal memory is 0.0B, as shown in the settings->storage

How to prevent it/any precaution so that the partition wont mess up? (I probably did some wrong thats why the partition was messed up, but I have no idea what I had done wrong)
here is what i did:
I had had this problem before so I do a SBF flash and the problem is gone.(I installed Kayant's AOKP rom -4.1jb)
Yesterday I decided to flash another rom (that was Quarx's cm10.1 rom) i did a nandroid backup first, then installed the rom and installed some apps, after that I installed Kayant's Slim rom(from the new aokp paradise), i found some bug and at last decide to return to Kayant's AOKP rom. I installed the 2nd Init boot menu(coz i did the nandroid backup with CWMrecovery, not TWRP), and problems came while restoring it. It failed to restore /data partition, I tried more times but couldn't fix this. So at last I turned to SBF flashing.
I flashed and rooted it with SuperOneClick and installed 2nd Init boot menu then install the AOKP rom(didn't restore the nandroid this time) then factory reset-ed it with stock recovery, and I found the /data and /cache partition messed up again(obviously the partition isn't messed up right after SBF flashing because i can install the 2nd Init app).
Now I am doing the third SBF flash.
You shouldn't have formatted data and cache with stock recovery. That was a mistake in your second attempt.

should I use aroma wiper and do a ext4 wipe if i am going to flash jb roms (like cm10/android 4.1 or higher), to prevent messing it up?
is it necessary to do wipe before or after install a new rom?
besides, any idea why the partition messed up/ failed to restore data when i do a nandroid restore, when i tried to restore with cwm recovery within 2nd Init boot menu installed on Kayant's Slim rom?

Yes, format to ext4 for JB ROMs. Full wipe not necessary but recommended.
Start afresh, install the ROM and restore data.
Plus, you shouldn't have installed 2ndinit again. You should have installed dual recovery and tried.
Got same problem, data and cache partition corrupted.
Fortunately I have TWRP installed so I went to File System utility and format data and cache (I choose ext3).
Then restored previous backup and everything worked like before!
After installing Quarx's CM 10.2 october 30th nightly (defy, not plus) the device seemed to be working normal but I then soon noticed that no internal storage is detected. (meaning I also could not install apps from the play store) Upon restarting, I go through the entire 'first time' sequence again and any thing I did before I restarted was not saved. I think this is because, when entering TWRP and going to mount, data is the only partition that it will not allow me to mount. Attempting to wipe the data partition yields the result 'unable to mount /data'. Is it possible to mount somehow in adb or terminal? Is anyone else having this issue? And is there any known fix?

Well , I had this problem too , but not with this ROM , enter in Motorola stock recovery , and make a wipe , after that , you should flash again a SBF , and put it again.. , or if you can still flash something , try to flash the 10.2 CM again.

But it won't let me. :/ Like I said before, attempting to wipe the data partition just gives me 'Unable to mount /data'. Does that mean the partition is corrupted, or can it be mounted somehow in the terminal? This has really become a headache...
As an update, I actually was able to wipe in the stock recovery, but going back to TWRP now shows that both my data and cache partitions cannot be mounted (or still corrupted). Would flashing a new sbf fix that? I can still access cyanogen if I boot normally but it is the same as before, no internal storage and nothing is saved after reboot.

Did you try to wipe data and cache in stock recovery ? I don't know if you will flash a SBF will fix that , try to wipe data and cache too , and after that if you can't boot , flash a SBF.
My friend has a Defy, and I have tried to install Kitkat to it. I was almost successful, but gapps dont go it, and booting is very-very slow.
I figured it out that there is a recovery error: cant mount /cache, and cant format is. I think cache is needed to boot faster.
And I cant to install any aps because "no internal memory space available"
I made a full wipe before install, format sd, system, data... etc.
When kitkat boots, statusbar is OK, quickbar OK, so i can enter Settings, do connect wifi, bluetooth, etc, but I have no launcher. Internal memory seems to be 68MB (defy has 2GB i think).
After restart, all changes lost.
Do u have any idea to re-create /cache partition (i have TWRP) and make internal SD visible to OS?

Which gapps did you install? You need the minimal version of BaNkS gapps.
I installed the minimal.
Did you try to wipe, install only ROM first, boot the device, and then reboot in TWRP and install lastest minimal Gapps?
