Back Cover Removal Tips Needed... - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Very likely that I'll need to be checking the battery connection in my N7. I've done some research on methods for popping off the back cover. Interestingly, I've yet to find really specific instructions. I don't want to break the tabs, so really detailed how-to's or tips would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I just use my finger nail and stick it in on a corner then just pry slowly have not had any problems with doing it

Really! The tabs don''t break? Very cool.
I've read that the "safest" way is to use a plastic opening tool to push in each tab.
Would be great to hear more experiences.

I have taken off the back 4-5 times and have had no problems at all just use a finger nail and take it slow when you pull it off no special tools needed

Did you start in one of the corners? Down by the USB port? On the side?

Got it!
Just jumped in.
Thanks for the guidance!

Start in any corner just slide your finger nail around the edge it is super easy

Done!
For anyone else who needs to pop off the cover, it's virtually identical to popping off the back of a Galaxy Nexus, or any similar type of phone. Very easy, with little/no risk of breaking off tabs.
I was able to check my battery connection - a loose connection/disconnection being a known issue for a number of N7's. I made sure mine was snug (it was) and I added a tiny piece of electrical tape to help ensure that it doesn't come loose in the future.
Thanks again for the help!

[Q] Battery cover removal/reinstall rating

Guys,
As the needs for extra juice without "downgrading" features, with preference to maintain slim profile for the handset, looks like an additional battery is a must.
Coming from Streak, the flimsy battery cover design for Note is new to me. It seems that it had exactly the same design as SGS 2, which I never owns. Streak's battery cover is made of metal, and if done carefully, battery cover removal/reinstallation in daily basis won't harm it.
Any ideas on Note's battery cover?
It's quite strong, I wouldn't worry about it:

not very difficult to remove. i just yank out the stylus and use the little corners there to get a few clicks off, then i just take it off from there.
the covers are very cheap anyways.

WHO-EVER says anything/comments about the SGS2 or Note's back cover I will just reply with that video. Just the link. Nothing more.
On a second thought I might even drop a line, like: "It might be cheap, but it's more durable than many phones as a whole."
Why do you think you need an extended battery on this phone?
I can use mine for two days of solid use without it dying.
I have both devices. The back plate will wear well.
Removal is easy on both, but reattaching is easier on the Note. You have to start at the bottom and work your way up to get all the fasteners to click properly. I've needed to remove it and restart on occasion with the SGSII. Not a huge deal but with the note, you can just put it in place and start mashing it down. No worries.

Thanks. But the fasteners, do they ever get loose or broken? On the plate or (hopefully not) the phone?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
That would be very hard to do. The fasteners are on the plate, not the phone itself.
If you were to mangle something, you'd bend or crease a fastener. You could bend it back, or more severely, cut it off. There are enough fasteners where you could afford to loose one with minimal problems.

I always get the display to be the highest battery drain on my usage. It's almost 2-4 times of other components like Android OS, etc. So I'm not sure how I'm going to get longer uptime unless I stop using the screen -- which is the reason I bought it at the first place

[Q] SOLVED - Removing the battery with a stripped/useless screw?

EDIT: Solved. I'll use the tools at work to drill the screw head in half & then ill use a flathead to get the bugger out. Thanks for the helps guys.
So my battery on my phone has gone to less than half after having a red light of death (but it magically fixed itself after 30 mins), So I've put up with having about 1hr screen time for over a week now. I bought some torx screwdrivers, Philips 00 screwdrivers, a new battery and some plastic cover removers.
Long story short, I got the back off, removed one screw from the battery and now the other one wont come out. Why? The head of the screw is stripped! How? I don't know, probably because these stupid manufacturers screwed them too tight, which caused the red light in the first place!!
Anyway, because its such a small screw the rubber band method isn't seeming to work. This is taking the absolute mick (in nicer words).
What can I do before I lose the will to live? Thanks.
P.s. Please don't say 'Send it to Google', Thanks.
If u have access to a very small drill.. Use it to deepen the grooves.. I know it's not very common... I'm a dentist.. So i did it with a stripped screw.. ask any dentist politely.. He might oblige.. Cheers

I used a very small, extremely thin disk of which was extremely sharp.
I attached it to a drill and cut the screw head in half, making the slit big enough to fit my screwdriver in. And then boom, it worked .

Mine had minor stripping so I just used a larger phillips head (PH0 instead of PH000) to remove it.
See http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/02/the-12-best-ways-to-remove-stripped-screws/ number 11.
For now I'm just going to leave one screw in, and see if I can order another.

Anybody else have a slightly curved back?

Does anyone else noticed the back of their Nexus 7 being ever so slightly curved? Not that this is something that would bother me, but when I place it on a table it is able to have just enough rock to it that swiping my finger with it or plugging a cable into it will pull the device in the direction of the tension.
(Moderators, I originally put this in Q&A, but since I realized it isn't so much a Q&A thread, I put it here in general. You can delete the Q&A one)
EDIT: Video comparison I just made - http://youtu.be/EhS7-KTwn4g
I believe it is designed that way so the speakers don't sit flat.

But it is down the vertical spine of the device, not the horizontal one. Plus the speaker grills are placed on the curve of the devices edge, so laying flat shouldn't be much of a problem anyway.
Not sure then. I just tried it with mine and I don't have that problem.

The back is indeed slightly curved... In the words of Will Graham, "this is by design"
Oh, I wasn't sure what you meant by that. I thought you meant if you pressed down on the top or bottom edge it would rock.

Best buy just refused to exchange it and wouldn't even try another device to see if it also did it, claiming it is a design choice (clearly she was on the ASUS/Google development team). Nor would they PM with the Staples coupon after the fact (but I can understand that one). She was just very rude and dismissive.
I just laid mine down on a marble counter. It sits flat. Only the edges are tapered for the speakers. Its pretty sturdy.

Yes! Somebody else notices. I was using my tablet in class today vertically and it kept turning horizontal. I noticed that the back isn't completely flat which is causing it to have movement when I lay it on a flat service.

Yeah, It might not be a huge "issue" (as the comment on my video says), but it is very annoying, especially considering I like to have the charger plugged in when I'm on it at times, and if there is any tension on the cord from where it is plugged in to where I am sitting, it will pull the tablet toward it.

I didn't really notice either until I had it plugged in and kept pulling away from me. Then I noticed it when I would swipe the screen. It really is annoying but I don't know how widespread the problem is and it is hard to gauge from the limited responses in this thread so far.
this really shows how far people are willing to go to find something to complain about..
slightly curved back that allows your device to spin freely when on a perfectly flat surface... really?
people in this world will never be happy ever.

Lol... This.
I tried to replicate, but I did not experience anything like that. I'm going with it's by design. It's in my hand 99% of the time anyway so I don't care.

[Q] How to undone battery connector screws, these are stuck fast!

As per title, after 2 attempts, to remove the back, plastic pry tool fell apart with the first kit I got, then finally got it off using plectrums, I have hit another problem. As per the title, I am unable to undo the screws that secure the battery connector. I have tried using a PH00, even tried a PH0 but the screws wont budge and I am fearful of trying any harder in case I round off the head. Has any one else found these screws hard to undo and have any tips please?
Not sure I can help cause mine came out really easy, but I am pretty sure they were ph00. Can you get a hold of a different ph00 screwdriver? Sometimes one will fit better than another.

Here I have a 100% fix for the galaxy note 4 emmc error and random reboots,
Including unable to unlock phone, deep sleep issues, and random behaviour.
Also fixes overheating and battery issues as well as makes GearVR work without heating issues.
This is a hardware fix and so far has been 100% effective on all devices I have repaired,
Its an easy repair and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
No special tools are needed and I have posted a video below to show how this is done.
All you will need is a bank card or spudger, a pair of scissors and some cardboard from a cereal box.
You may also need a drop of glue or blue tack.
Although this usually stops all issues on most devices you may still need wakelock but usually it's not needed.
Paypal donation welcome if it fixed your phone you could donate here https://paypal.me/Arnookie anything helps no matter how small.

Anyone attempting this please do not go under the glass try push it forward from the battery compartment and then run a card around the edges of the grey plastic. Just go carefully when doing this and don't rush. You can heat the screen with a hairdryer to make removing the phone from the casing easier. It's the best way to do it.
Also you could use Aluminium Thermal pads or Copper instead of cardboard for better thermal cooling. Just make sure its 0.5mm or 1.2mm thick but no thicker!
You will get great 3d mark results using Aluminium, Copper or Thermal pads. "Do not use any kind of thermal pastes!!", You have been warned! But even using just cardboard works great as well.
Don't blame me if you break your phone more by attempting this. But if your phone is not working, you really have nothing to loose.
If you have an old phone you would like to donate please send me a PM.
1. Thanks a lot mate, I can confirm that this method works. At least it helps to turn the phone on/off asap without removing the battery then waiting like before.
2. Also, I am glad to break the front glass, and also cut off the blue wire for phone signal, just by sliding my credit card when trying to open the parts. So now I am ordering the new glass and a set of wifi/phone signal wires.
I am not blaming you, LOL, just to add in some information that anyone who never open the Note 4 themselves would do an extra care on this work.
Well done for your tips!!!
I'm glad it worked for you. Sorry to hear your glass cracked. That's a pain. I do try to explain not to go under the glass when doing this. I'm sorry if it was not so clear. No not really but if you like you could use aluminium or copper for better cooling and thermal performance. But it must be no thicker than 3 or 4 folds of cereal cardboard.
This has worked for many people already.

Instead of cardboard, I used folded aluminum to the desired thickness and reassembled. My note 4 actually turns on properly where prior the phone would shut off from minor use and had to remove the battery and pop it in the freezer just to turn on.... I did have 2-3 reboots so far but that was after heavy usage (few minutes gaming and gps usage).
I saw a similar youtube video that actually showed a voltage power supply and volt meter to the out put and pressure on the emmc card was the solution as well.
Thanks for the fix! Hope I can get more usage out of the old Note 4.
Yeh I actually upgraded this to aluminium as well. ?

Yeh sure but maybe do 0.5mm to 1.25mm, I would say 0.5mm minimum but 1.25mm should be ok. Its only purpose is to put pressure on the chip
