I have been fortunate enough to have enough Nexus 10's in stock at local walmarts to be able to validate a persistent problem with 3 32gb Nexus 10 Devices.
The first one I returned thinking it was simply defective. After the second, I suspected a bigger problem. Picking up a third tonight to do back to back comparisons has confirmed that there is a major problem with these devices and wifi connectivity/stability.
There are two problems that I've encountered on all 3 of these devices. The first is serious catastrophic signal drops at random times with no interference. The second is after network drops due to poor signal, reconnecting results in an endless Authentication/Obtaining IP loop regardless of signal strength that requires disabling wifi and then reenabling before it will be able to connect again.
The signal drops seems to happen consistently at a point in the house where I'm getting around -70 dbm. If I have a good strong signal, the drops don't appear as noticeable.
Network info: e2500 dual band router running 5ghz on channel 40 using WPA2 and 2.4ghz on channel 11 using WPA2. I've changed channels, set to static IP, set DHCP reservations, enabled 2.4ghz only, enabled 5ghz only. Unique SSID's for 2.4 and 5ghz bands. No router settings make a difference.
For good measure I swapped out the e2500 for an ASUS RT-N66U and attempted the same as above as well as playing more with security and channel width, antenna strength, etc. No difference. The issue is software/hardware related with these devices only. All other devices in my home maintain good strong signals. (cell phones, Internet TV's, Laptops, Blu-ray players, etc)
The signal drop was not observed on the newest tablet while it was still running 4.2. It wasn't until taking 4.2.1 that it displayed the same drops. The drops occurred on the devices independently of each other, again indicating it wasn't network related, but a device issue.
The pictures attached were taken at the same time for each device. They speak for themselves.

Did you ever think it's conflicting with your router?
Shrug
I havent had one single wifi issue with my Nexus 10. its running the newest 4.2.1 update. Im also using the Asus N66U Router. I have mine setup to detect both the 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies. Maybe ur security settings on the routers isnt playing well with the nexus? NM: just reread ur article. Not sure how i missed the entire paragrah on the security settings u used. Im not sure then. See if anyone else posts anything. Sorry i cant help any further. mine seems to be working awesome. Sorry about ur luck. Maybe wally world got a bad batch of them in then. I dont like buying electronics from there. for some reason, maybe its just me, the items dont seem as good even tho its the same thing. I always wander if vendors send walmart their 2nds. Who knows.
n10 working fine with asus ac66 router here. I use it on the 5ghz band.. I ran a couple of iperf throughput tests and it worked great in the same room as my router and also on the 2nd floor of my house...
This sound more like a problem with your router. No way are 3 in a row going to be defective...
EDIT: sorry if that sounded asshole-ish lol. I really think you are having problems with you router, so you should look into resetting it, and setting up your router again if need be. Try that, and try going to Starbucks or somewhere with free WiFi to test as well. Hope this helps

I would agree that it seems like a problem with your router. Either that or walmart is giving you the same tablet after you return it.
I know you have tried a lot but I would make sure you update the tablet and then do a hard reset of your router. Seems to me like you may have some issues with settings.

Before I updated my n10 to 4.2.1, I didn't have any issue with the wifi, no discconections, no lose of signal. Once I updated, I found out that all those problems came to me.
Even if it is a 4.2.1 problem and not his router, that doesn't mean the Nexus10 itself has a problem, just the current firmware. I'd be interested to see the same wifi monitoring done using a different router, and then with a different ROM (such as CM10.1)
Nexus 10 = No WiFi Problem...
for me with a Linksys N900 router.
Have the same issue on two N10s on a Linksys e2500...it feels to be software related

Two routers, same issues with these tablets on both routers. These pictures are of TWO tablets back to back at the same time. 3 different walmart stores and 3 different unique tablets.
I've also been able to reproduce on my phone's hotspot by moving the phone far enough away that the signal degrades to around the -60 to -70 dbm. THAT seems to be the "sweet spot" so to speak. These drops when happening on stronger signals don't seem to be much of an issue unless you're streaming content. For surfing you don't notice the drop as your strength is still more than adequate. However, at these distances the drops result in freezing in browser and disconnects from the network.
Strange issue. I'm getting excellent WiFi results with my Nexus 10. My router is dinosaur... An Actiontec (not even 802.11N!) provided by Verizon with a FIOS bundle about three years ago. It's sitting in the basement at the opposite end of the house and I'm currently on the second floor. Signal seems just fine. No drops at all in a few weeks of heavy daily use. Any chance of some kind of RF interference?
beamed from my Nexus 10, far, far away...
Try only connecting to the 2.4 GHz and see what happens. It sounds from your post that maybe you have your n10 setup with both 2.4 and 5 GHz at the same time which is causing it to constantly pick the best signal and reconnect. For me personally, the 5 GHz range of my e3000 isnt good enough for me to even program my n10 to connect to it. I use 2.4 only.

No there shouldn't be any interference. I went over the possibilities with a Google support rep and the phones in the house operate at 1.9 ghz and one older phone at 5.8ghz, neither of which would interfere.
Additionally if you look at both devices at the same time, they were showing drops independent of each other so one device would be good at the sime time the other device drops...suggesting no interference.

Tried this and switched security to wpa personal and no change.
The is no specific issue with the nexus 10 WiFi. In fact, I've never had a better performing device signal strength/throughput wise. Look on the xda forums for any device, and you will find people with WiFi issues.
Ultimately, 802.11n is a specification and there are many different implementations of this. Some implementations have issues working with others, for a cacophony of different reasons. Seems you're having a bit of back luck at the moment.
First, you need to simplify your setup. Turn off any turbo boost modes, turn on any compatibility modes and reset to default settings. Turn off encryption. If you still have issues, research the advanced wifi settings of your router, and check nothing is set to a bad setting. If you still can't getgood results try a different router.
Done, Done, Done and Done.
The e2500 is a very simple router. No turbo boost modes, switching to the most basic n option, b/g option, specifying channels, turning off security, disabling firewalls, etc. doesn't make a difference.
And for the last time I DID try a different router using default settings and spent 2-3 hours messing with settings to see if I could find a sweet spot with it too.
Let me reiterate NO other devices of mine show signal drops. Laptop upstairs, Internet TV upstairs, Blu-ray downstairs, Two cell phones (Razr MAXX and SIII), etc. NONE, but ALL 3 Nexus 10's do. There is most certainly an inherent issue with all 3 of these Nexus 10s and they all share the same symptoms. It's a software or hardware design issue persistent on each of these. Even if I was able to resolve the issue with a very specific way of setting up my router, that would still be a huge FAIL. Your wireless device should be able to accommodate very basic and common security and configuration settings.
Instead of making a lot of claims that your device doesn't have problems and there isn't an inherent issue, how about some meaningful testing attempting to reproduce the issue as I've done?
Move to a range where you get -60 to -70 dbm, install network signal info and watch your signal strength on 4.2.1 for 10-15 minutes validating you don't have any drops and screen shot that.
Here's a back to back comparison showing the poor signal on the N10, yet great signal on a RAZR Maxx.
@ga9213
Well, if youre sure its not a router problem, you have 2 options:
Revert to stock 4.2 if you love running stock, OR try flashing several custom ROMs to see if the issue can be temporarily corrected until an official update arrives. (Optional 3rd: return your tablet to Wal-Mart for a full refund and cry yourself to sleep...the end)

Hello all,
I've had my Nexus 10 since Christmas and it's never given me any problems. Within the last 3 or 4 days, however, I noticed my videos weren't loading like normal, so I've been running speedtests and it is completely inconsistent. My phone and computer will consistently pull 20+ Mbps, but the N10 is crazy. Sometimes it's 3Mbps, sometimes it's 10Mbps, sometimes it's 16Mbps. Every time I check, it's different. I've used multiple programs and websites to read the speeds, and they're all reporting the same. I can stand in another room, or right next to the router, same story. The wifi never fully drops, it just slows way down. I don't have a case on it. I've turned on and off the Wi-Fi optimization in settings. I've turned on and off location settings. Nothing helps! Please let me know if you have any ideas. I am hoping I won't have to return the darn thing, it seems crazy.
As per my internet, it's Comcast, Surfboard modem with a Linksys E1000 (Wireless-N, 2.4GHz) using WPA. Restarting that did not help. I am open to the idea of changing some settings on the router however, if that might be a solution. Also, signal strength on the N10 says "Excellent" and link speed says 130Mbps.
Thanks for your help!

I too have this problem so now Im going to attempt to root the device
Glad to hear someone else is having similar problems.
Possible good news: I changed my protection from WPA(mixed) to WPA2, and so far things seem to be much more consistent. This may just be a fluke, but it's looking much better so far.
If you have a router with 2.4GHz band only, try changing it to 2.4GHz under WiFi settings on the Nexus.
I had some disconnection problems due to that and somewhat inconsistent speeds, I've seen it fix a lot of peoples problems, I've yet to have a transfer problem so far with limiting WiFi to the speed of my router.
Other issues some see is using N wide or dual channel (40Mhz). As the N10 only supports 20 Mhz in 2.4GHz it seems to get confused.
Most other devices either support 40GHz or handle switching more gracefully.
In short force router to 20 Mhz/single channel, may report more consistent behaviour.
On 5Ghz it does not matter as the N10 supports 40Mhz/Dual channel.
Odd, I know.
My experience is that sometimes with wifi issues, wiping the cache (if custom recovery is available) would resolve the issues for some time, but it might be due to an beta ROM.
P.S> on 5GHz wifi I am able to hit 122Mb/s
it has WIFI, mine hardly works
After a few hours of testing, I am now consistently getting 20mbps + as I should be. My router is set to 20MHz only, but I think the main issue was the security settings. It just wasn't dealing with WPA(mixed) well.
Hello everyone!
I just got the S4, and im really impressed by it.
But for a heavy youtube user, beein unable to connect to my home wifi is a big problem.
I know this is not 100% the right forum, sice i have the I9505 edition of the phone (I'm from Norway), but I guess this is the best forum to ask.
Whenever I try to connect to my home wifi I immediately get the message "Authentication error occurred" and the S4 wants me to insert password again. I did manage to connect to the wifi for some breef moments using the "Wifi connection manager" application, but it suddenly stopped working after I put the phone to lock screen. I have updated the phone in Kies, Rooted it to maybe find some fixes, rebooted the access point, forgot and reconnected the network, and still no luck
Here is some info on the wifi:
WPA-PSK (personal)
We use an access point for the wireless singals. This is a Moterola AP-5131
But considering there beeing 4 iPhones and 2 laptops already connected to the wifi, I doubt it beeing the AP that is the problem.
I really hope that there is a phone-side fix to this problem, because it is easier to hack into the Matrix than to acces the AccesPoint.

I have noticed the same "authentication error" on mine as well with public sites like Sams club and target to name two. Never had this issue on the S3.
There is a known issue concerning the S4s ability to connect to certain routers or APs. The issue is most prevalent on D-Link equipment but there have been reports of Cisco, Linksys, and other wireless APs having issues as well. Instead of getting a different phone, I opted to get a new router and I have been good ever since.
There is an issue with Android 4.2.x where WiFi will not connect to certain wireless routers or APs as well but with the Galaxy S4, the issue seems to affect more D-Link hardware than any others - I don't know why. It's a really weird problem.
As for correcting the problem, you will basically have to tinker with the wireless settings of the wireless router or AP you wish to connect to until it works - and it may work for only a small period of time. No amount of tinkering worked for my D-Link DIR-655 so I purchased an Asus RT-AC66U and I can connect now. I've heard of success with Netgear routers as well.

Thanks for the replies! I just think its funny how 4 iPhones are connected, but the S4 wont connect.
I think I will try flashing stock firmware a couple of times first, just to be sure that this is not a phone-side error. As i said in my OP, the AP is like the Fort Knox. I will have to serial into it using telnet software, and I dont have the cables.
But as you said, I might end up with buying a new AP :/
That sounds like an awful lot of hell to go through just to change some wireless settings lol. Try changing your security key to AES encryption and see if that works.
I used to relish the battles I fought with my electronic equipment, aka toys lol. Now I just want them to work without a fuss. Thats one big reason I bought a new router.

Would you happen to have a link for more info in this? I am running a D-Link DIR-655 as well
Edit: I did some poking around and found this/ I did not come up with this I just found it at the site linked below. It seems to have helped me.
-------------------------------------
1. Login to your router
2. Go to the setting for wireless 2.4 (probably radio 1) (For Sitecom go to tab Basic> subtab Wireless 2.4 GHz)
So what i changed here is the 802.11 mode. (there are several modes like: just 802.11b, just 802.11g, just 802.11n, mixed 802.11b and 802.11g, mixed 802.11g and 802.11n ........)
>>> I Put It On: "mixed 802.11g and 802.11n"<<< (it used to be on mixed 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n)
3. Secondly i disabled Auto Channel Scan. This allowed me to select a Wireless Channel (frequency/channel).
>>>I Chose the highest channel ("2.472 GHz - CH13")<<<
4. I used to have the Transmission Rate at the option "best (automatically)"
>>>I changed this to the option: "54" (Mbit/s)<<<
5. I have channel width at the option: "auto 20/40 MHz" (but it always used to be this one)
Furthermore i have the following settings:
> Security mode: "WPA - Personal"
> WPA Mode: "WPA or WPA2"
> Cipher Type: "TKIP and AES"

Yeah thats basically everything one will need to try in order to resolve the problem.
I refuse to slow my router down to 54g though, even if it would have fixed the problem, which it didn't.
Is there any solution on the phone side?
I have the same problem, but the router is in company network, and there is no way I can access it.

I had the same issue. I use a linksys with wpa security. Use tkip cipher. I was on AES and would not connect. Just remember to reconnect your other devices to wifi.

I had that happen when I first tried to connect to my home network. I "forgot" the network, rebooted the phone, and typed everything back in. It worked for me. YMMV
Update firmware on your router/access point.
Then set security to WPA2-Personal.
Use AES. TKIP is more secure but much slower.
Everything else leave on auto/default.
Zapha did you ever find a solution?
I have the AP-5131 at work as well. I have had the the same problem on my HTC Evo 4G LTE since it first upgraded to Jelly bean. Zero issues on ICS. So far every JB ROM I've tried has the same issue. Iphones, ipods and laptops are also connecting fine
So far my only solution has been to unplug wireless and plug it back in. It will reconnect until i wander out of range and i get the error again.

I realize this is a somewhat older thread, so if I need to repost a new one please let me know. My gf and I both have S4s, but only mine is modded. She's currently in the hospital with pneumonia and she asked me if they had a Wi-Fi connection there for her phone. When I searched I found 4 open hotspots, and upon connecting only a webpage came up asking to agree to their terms and conditions before it connected.
Mine, on the other hand showed that it connected without an agreement page, but I wasn't able to use ANY data functions, be it Wi-Fi or LTE. Turning off Wi-Fi didn't help the issue, so only a reboot got my LTE working again. This wasn't the first time this has happened to me, but only after connecting hers am I seeing anything else but it connecting (sort of). I should add here that I never have this issue at either my home or hers.
I've tried playing with the settings several times, so I wouldn't be asking if I found a solution... Lol! The only things I can think of are 1) my particular phone is faulty in some respect 2) it could be the rom I'm using, which is Goldeneye 8.0 at the present. In retrospect I've just started to notice this happening in the past month or so... I was able to connect to publics just fine prior to that, no matter if they were passworded or totally open. Any help would be immensely appreciated as always, and again I apologize if I should've created a new thread... Thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:
I just want to add that my wife has this funny thing that some android phones cannot connect to the Internet.
Even my very Samsung s7 cannot log in to the net.the strange thing is on the day I bought the phone.it can be connected to wife.but the nx day it just cannot hooked up to the wi Fi.
Even stranger is my old s5 which has been hooked up to wifI previously also cannot connect.
I tried calling up the isp.the usual thing about switching off the router.re connect the cables to try a gin.no luck.the isp tech even said I key in the wrong password.I confirm that my password has never been changed before.I try up teen times to no avail
I finally found out that by retyping your security password on your router wireless settings solved the problem.even if it is the same password as before.I tried it and boom.wifi is back.everything is still the same password and all.but it will not connect until you retype your password again
Anyone else having this issue? My tablet will randomly stop seeing my 5GHz network, other devices aren't having this issue, and it's still seeing 2.4GHz networks.

Try changing the channel manually in your router settings. Some mobile devices are really picky about this...same issue happens to my gf's Galaxy Nexus. I don't own this device yet, but this is some general advice that I'd try first.

Mine is similarly having trouble connecting to 5GHz networks from time to time. It seems that when the tablet set to 'auto' it stops scanning for 5GHz networks. If you manually set it to 5GHz it will immediately find the network. Hopefully there will be a bug-fix.
check your routers 5Ghz settings. Make sure you have it on a 20mhz channel if given the option as 40mhz or hybrid 20/40mhz will usually give you connection errors.

Haven't connected mine to 5GHz on either of the dual band routers at my house. I always just use 2.4GHz with all of my devices. I'll try them both in little bit to see what my results are though.
Sent from my '13 Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
The issue I think is that 5GHz is not nearly as effective at maintaining a strong signal through obstructions like 2.4GHz is. I only get a 2 bar signal in a room on the other side of my router while I get a 4-5 bar connection strength with 2.4GHz in the same room.
I was having trouble with 5Ghz too (I was using 802.11a). In order to even get a stable connection, I had to change channels on the router. But as previously noted, it does seem that it has more problems with obstructions. I sometimes lost connection with just one wall between me and the router, but with 2.4Ghz, everything was fine.
I have never had this problem with my GS3 or with any other phone that I've used on 5Ghz.

I think higher frequency in general is harder to penetrate obstructions. Same with my 5Ghz on both my routers. Will have to change the channel to see if it helps my connections. I leave it on 'auto'
Not having any issue connecting to 5ghz band. It does get a little weak when upstairs but has not dropped.

You saying you were getting faster speeds on 5GHz than you do on 2.4GHz? Or were you just mentioning the speeds because it's now slower on the same 5GHz router?

You saying you were getting faster speeds on 5GHz than you do on 2.4GHz? Or were you just mentioning the speeds because it's now slower on the same 5GHz router?

I would normally only get 8-15 on 2.4ghz on my tablet, and I when I went to my 5ghz network, it was set to auto on the channel width And for some reason it knocked off and I couldn't join again. After I reset it, I was only getting 6 mb on the 5ghz. I just changed it back to 20mhz channel width, and it's flying. 64mbps link speed, and 24mbps down, 2.80 up.

I am having the same issue it losts 5ghz when i try to reconnect. Just reported it to Google they are looking into it.
If youre in the US or canada, Check your WiFi settings, many are reporting their tablets being shipped with wifi region set to Europe. Europe uses slightly different settings then the US and Canada.

I have had issues with my N7 dropping signals altogether. I have one router (upstairs) w/ 5ghz and another (downstairs) on 2.4ghz. My N7 doesn't even see the 2.4 and will occasionally drop the 5 and rebooting won't fix it, nor turning on airplane and off.

I can't find this setting item, my Nexus 7 2013 is on KitKat.
Can anyone confirm or not if the crap WiFi strength on nexus 10s is an acknowledged fact? I have seen some say it is, yet still see other comments praising the devices WiFi saying it is stronger than ipones etc.
This is my second N10, I sent the first back due to WiFi performance and I believed it to be defective. My second devices arrival has suggested otherwise as I have noticed no improvement.... Am I just really unlucky?
On my home network, every other device has ho WiFi issues, but my n10 struggles! It seems to sho a decent signal strength in the WiFilist in settings, but a low strength in the top right corner.... Can anyone advise? I get similar strength issues on other networks (public and at friends houses. SO frustrating not being able to perform one of the most basic functions on a £300+ device). Was hoping 4.3/4 upgrades would help- nothing.
Should I get a third nexus sent out? Is this down to poor quality components? Anyone having same issues?
Thanks!
Hard to generalize, but mine has been rock-solid (on 4.3; I'm holding off on "upgrading" to 4.4). Seems to give faster throughput than my N7
My N10 seems to be at par or a bit better than my better halfs Ipad. Taking both tablets and going for a walk out in back (acreage), in the outbuildings, and near fences, the signal strength and ability to connect to my router and see other routers was actually a touch better with the N10.
When first getting the N10, it did seem to drop the wifi signal, but replacing the el cheapo several year old router with a newer medium price router cured that issue.
The Google Nexus 10 as well as the Amazon Kindle HDX are two of the few devices that actually support MIMO (multiple input multiple output) wireless.
This typically allows for very solid and swift wireless performance.
I suspect that software updates may have had some impact on the Wireless functionality of the Nexus 10, but that is also in combination with some types of access points, so it varies to each customer.
Some places I get really terrible wireless, but at both my work and at home, it performs extremely well.
Hopefully a future KitKat patch will address the wireless more. I notice that new binaries are included in KitKat pertaining to both wireless and Bluetooth for the N10.
Hello, I just became an owner of a Nexus 10. when I first time connect to my BSNL Teracom wifi router it is not connected. it is always showing connecting or obtaining IP address...
It connected through my S3 Hotspot but not through teracom router
I wake up in the morning and just press again the connect button. Bingo...it is connected..!!! Not understand why it is behaving like this. I am not done any changes in routers settings also. Is it not connecting b'coz the routers frequency mismatch or anything else ?? After once I switch off and on the router the same problem happens
all my phones including a Samsung s3, tab neo and also my laptop all are switches automatically connected to the wifi router.
Please help.
thanks in advance.

Yup... Crap WiFi on my nexus 10 too. Just randomly disconnects or is so slow that its unusable for streaming movies... I own a ton of android devices and this is the only one that gives me problems. When I turn it on, I just hope it stays connected. Let's hope this post goes through lol

Mine pulls 40mb out of a n wifi connection.. the main connection is only 50 -55 on average. I'd say its the best performing wifi device I own.
I have owned my N10 for over a year. The WIFI signal strength is good, but I often get some lag issues, which ended up being my router. When I have issues, I now reset my modem and everything works again. I have read that some people only have a 2.4GHz modem, and they have received better luck by limiting WIFI to that frequency only.
I have Google Fiber Gigabit. Their Wifi router doesn't support 802.11ac so I attached one that does and so far am able to get over 300Mbps consistently and near 400 with GS5 802.11ac. Might be able to tune router for even higher.
More on Google Fiber here...

I do connect to the 5Ghz. In the SG5 WiFi connect info, it shows Link Speed as 866Mbps.
I'll try other speedtest sites as well as look into other router settings. The router is an Asus AC68U.
In comparison, my N7 (2013) tablet can do about 100-130Mbps on same router. And hard wired computers can consistently do over 800Mbps on Google Fiber.
Edit: It might be the test sites because they only use a small sample download when it notices a mobile device and doesn't get a chance to sustain a higher speed, not sure.
Question I have always had is how do you know when the device is connected the ac instead of n? Just off the data speeds alone? Does not seem to be any indicator to tell. I have an ac router and can't figure this out. Any suggestions?

Not true.
For starts the phone only has dual antenna design meaning limited to 866Mbps "link rate".
Next, WiFi has about 40-45% overhead so even at a perfect 866Mbps and perfect noise, which won't ever happen the BEST you could hope to see would be around 500Mbps and again that's all under perfect conditions.
You don't want to be too close to the router or you get overdrive, too far signal degrades.
I would say when you got around 370-380 that's probably around the realistic best to expect. If no other 5GHz devices existed, nothing else wireless connected to your router and you was perfect distance you might be able to get more but a phone is never going to see the perfect conditions and I would be shocked to see a phone do too much better. Maybe another 50M at best but that's about the limit for how the phone is engineered and real world conditions.

You may be right, thank you for the detailed explanation Either way the host servers and such that we download our data from are almost always the cap for our actual download speed of files, so we shouldn't really even reach the 300mbps that he's getting when it comes to real world use.

Yup, and that's the other thing.
Servers traditionally had faster connections because they are serving multiple users at once.
A server with a 1Gbps connection, depending on what it's doing, has a low chance of letting you max out your line even.
All it takes is 2 people and now that BW is shared. Even if you have 1Gbps and the other person only 100Mbps you now won't be able to ever max out your line.
Most speed test sites have trouble even testing, the only ones that somewhat can decent are because they are hosted on the providers net probably on 10Ge connections, and again, imagine if 11 Google internet people did speed test at same time, now that 10gig connection can't max all 11 of you out even.
Faster connections are slowly going to hit a wall. At which point only changes in the way the internet works will make the speeds useful, be this by multiple streams via different path's or just more user multitasking.
You take all that into account and now you have the HW side of things. It takes a decent amount of CPU power to process 500Mbps of data. Phones are just now getting to the point where the CPU can handle such burdens because remember, the CPU's are doing many other things at once. It's not like a router that is specifically designed to handle traffic and even a lot of them struggle at 1Gbps. Just cause something has a 1Gbps port doesn't mean it can process at that
Either way though for a cell phone I think it's great.
I personally was glad when 802.11ac devices started going in cell phones that they went for the 866.7Mbps version of AC. I was afraid they would do like they did 802.11N, single antenna which would have limited it to like 466Mbps, which while half of that is good speed wise still, with the dual you actually gain better coverage because the increased signal gained plus now have more bw for weaker signals.

I believe 802.11n at 5Ghz can only do up to 600Mbps. On the GS5, go to the WiFi settings and click on the SSID that your are connected to. Scroll around and you can see the 'link speed'. My link speed shows 866Mbps, so likely using AC.

Yeah, I actually get better performance sometimes when in next room. I have been able to validate I get an 866 link rate.
Here are the advanced options on my router. Any suggestions on what else to tinker with? Someone suggested actually turning off beamforming, which didn't change anything.
Frequency 5Ghz
Enable Radio Yes
Enable wireless scheduler No
Set AP Isolated No
Roaming assistant disabled
Enable IGMP Snooping disabled
Multicast Rate(Mbps) auto
Preamble Type long
AMPDU RTS enable
RTS Threshold 2347
DTIM Interval 3
Beacon Interval 100
Enable TX Bursting enabled
Enable WMM APSD enabled
Optimize AMPDU aggregation disabled
Optimize ack suppression disabled
802.11ac Beamforming enabled
Universal Beamforming enabled
Tx power adjustment 150mW (also tried up to 200, the max)

Will try to torrent some Linux ISOs and see what max is when I get a chance. I was able to get about 500Mbps while torrenting on hard wired computer.

Preamble Type - changing to short should get better BW, not by a lot but some.
Beamforming should be fine either way. Most the newer 802.11ac stuff has it properly finally.
Beyond this though you can't get too much more out of a cell phone. Due to it being a cell phone the tx power on it alone is going to be limited. A laptop has the ability to use much more power thus faster rates.
Link rates are almost always useless though, they give you a very rough idea of signal strength/quality but far from a true reading.
I would say you're probably at the limits of the phone CPU and power wise.
Wow ! DL Speed?! That's freakin' awesome!
Great ! You guys are very fortunate to have that kind of internet connection DL Speed.
Here in the Philippines, We only have a maximum internet connection of 10-15 Mbps that is for commercial or business type connection $140 - $170. 3-5 Mbps around $75 - $130 for residential use. It really depends on the ISP(s). It's so unfortunate and saddening to know that the connections they are providing which really cost so expensive are definitely from either Sprint or AT&T which we all know that these two ISP Sprint/AT&T are the best when it comes to Internet Connection and also known for the reliable and cheap plans/offers. Hopefully AT&T and Sprint have their own branch or company here in the Philippines.
