How are your buttons? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I was just wondering: how are you buttons? And with this I in particular mean how much they move/shake if you shake your phone. Since my good old Galaxy Ace had some very tough buttons, I'm wondering what the "standard" of our phones is. Mine do shake, both the power button and volume rocker, slightly when I shake my phone and I can also hear them, but I don't think they will break quickly.

Why are you shaking your phone?

The Galaxy Ace was the lowest of the low end. Most cheap phones are built extremely rigidly as they have nothing else going for them.

My power and volume button squeak.

my power buttons are a bit squeaky, but I don't think they will break soon.

Volume button was squeaky. Not that much anymore.

My volumes down button got stuck in but came back recently

For me, the loose-fitting volume rocker is one of the most annoying things about this phone. I know, first-world problems, right? It sort of clicks around in its housing and gives the entire phone a cheaper feel to it. But, on the whole, there's not enough that would make me dissatisfied with the phone.

Ah, thanks for your reactions. Seems like they aren't as sturdy as they were on my older phone, but they'll survive, (hopefully)

I hate this. When you buy such a costly phone and there's something not right about it. Even this little. Why didn't they make rigid buttons like Samsung's nexus? :S

Find it very annoying too; as said before: it makes the phone feel a lot cheaper and less sturdy

The best thing about the nexus bumper is it makes the buttons feel alot better

Hate to say this but my phones buttons are just perfect. LG has some serious quality consistency problems.

Mine aren't perfect for sure, but it's not so that the quality is bad; they're just a little loose just like with most phones here.

Costly? the Nexus 4 price is super low compared with the galaxy s3 or the gayphone 5... What do you want for that price, I cant complain the Nexus 4 is awesome
Also the Galaxy s3 is made of cheap plastic, the screen can be easily broken and is way more expensive

nothing wrong with my buttons here. They don't squeak or make any sort of noise.

Ok Rate Samsung Galaxy S 3

what do you Guys think so far rate the phone please. If you would like to add anything specifically you Love or Hate about this device please share
I'd give it an 8/10. Nearly everything about the phone is amazing except the build quality. I just can't get over how cheap it feels compared to the HTC devices I've owned. Plus my screen cracked so there's that :/

Wow do tell how did it crack? and how do you plan on fixing it?
10/10 to date.

Its ok. Don't really feel that much difference between it and the skyrocket with skyics. If anything, the skyrocket feels faster and sturdier.

10, erm I mean 5
I love this thing. It's blazing fast, can multitask like a Mo-Fo and it's beautiful! It does feel soft (not cheap) but that's also what makes it so nice to hold. The only thing that would make it even more perfect would be if it had Jelly Bean already. Sure it's not perfect but what device is? It probably won't survive a drop like an HTC device can but I don't plan on dropping mine.

All by itself huh?
Love it so far. Gave it four Stars.
My complaints:
- vz locked bootloader nonsense
- power button location slightly annoying so far. Would prefer on top, next to audio jack.
- no screen brightness toggle in taskbar with other toggles
- battery cover is probably too flimsy. I see it breaking at some point.
- screen is dim outdoors, but I fully expected this based on screen type.
I cannot wait for my case to arrive it is very slippery i set my phone on my lap a lot and this one slides off every time where my old Droid x stayed put.

[Q] Any Other Nexus 4 Owners Have Wobbly Volume Rockers?

Just got my Nexus 4 through the door and I am really impressed about everything, it looks and feels really nice, and the screen is much better than that of the Galaxy Nexus, all in my opinion.
The only thing I have noticed though is that the volume rocker is quite wobbly, just touching it without pressing down the up/down button moves it.. The power button is fine though, and feels solid/firmly in place without wobbling at all.
Do any other Nexus 4 owners have this? What is your volume rocker like? Is it worth getting a replacement just for this, will it get worse?
Bump in case anyone had missed it.
Yeah same here, people in another thread worried about rattle being caused by dodgy accelerometers and camera autofocus..
Feels like a solid enough device to me
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Doesn't feel any more wobbley than my previous phones, I think.
volume doesn't feel wobbly to me...i thought i noticed a rattle, but then grabbed my GNex and placed it the same way and it has the same sound *shrugs*
Power button is wobbly for me. Kinda worrisome.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah if you shake it, the buttons rattle. My gnex doesn't do that. Oh well, I could care less.
no issue here 8gig model
Wobbly / rattling volume rockers
I guess I am not the only one who found it pretty annoying. Even with a slight phone shake the volume rocker makes rattling noise. I don't think it should do this. Seems to be a bad part fitting. It is definitely the volume rocker - if you hold it and shake the phone, the rattling stops.
Debating with myself If I should submit a warranty claim. If not all the phones do it then it may be a defect in some specific devices.
I came to this site looking for an answer to this too. Received mine yesterday (16GB UK) and the volume button is very loose. It rattles too.
Do you send it back? or is this just what you expect with a cheap phone from LG ?
I'm considering sending mine back because of this I'm not to sure if it's really worth it, or if I'm just being overly picky.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
My sgs2 had this too so I'm used to it
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Yup, totally wobbly.
Sent from my Nexus 4
So I guess this is an issue on all N4s?
It seems very odd as the power button and build of the phone is tight and solid. Even the headphone jack is good and tight... The volume button however is crap.
It has a very slight gap around it. Either the hole was cut to big or the buttons are too small.
Mine is not wobbly at all.
Sent from my Nexus 4
Ugh, mine's the exact opposite. 8gb wobbly power but volume rocker is solid.
RMA it or accept?
Depends if you're happy with it or not.
No problem with mine... so far!
Does this problem warrant a good reason for return??
Is this a production fault?
I have noticed the case creaks above the volume button if pressed in the plastic surround.
I knew LG couldn't be trusted regarding build quality.
My volume rocker is slightly "wobbly", too. Don't really think this little inconvenience warrants a return, though... Hopefully, I'm not proven wrong three months from now.

Vibration getting weaker...

I've had my Nexus 4 since the first batch, my sister just received her Nexus 4 last week. I've noticed that her vibration is more pronounced than mine, such as with typing and unlocking the screen. This might sound dumb, but does the motor have to break in, therefore get weaker after awhile? I'm thinking about trying to get a replacement. Any ideas?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah Ive had mine for about a month and I do remember the vibration being a lot better when I got it out of the box.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I haven't noticed any change on the vibration strengt... it has a crappy little vibrate now as it was when out of the box... The Nexus 4 has the worst vibrator in a mobile device I ever saw.
OK good, so I'm not going crazy.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I haven't noticed it getting any worse, but I must say it is a pretty bad motor.
Sent from my Paranoid Nexus 4 using Tapatalk²
I noticed, that it has gone slightly softer. But it has never been really "good". I set a higher value for Vibration in Trickster, so it isn't that bad.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
yesterday i got my second device from the rma... and i have to say that on my first devices the vibration were much better... it sounds quit but good....but on my new devices it stronger and it sound hollower....
It's annoying... but it's not defect or what are you think....
I actually find mine vibrates quite well, a little bit better than my Nexus S.
mmhhh oke...but is there someone, where can agree my description of the hollow sound!?
I think it's either hit or miss. My original nexus 4 is pretty good but one the the RMA's I received had a really sluggish and weak motor that made a lot of noise.
Are you going to change your device?
My original Rev 10 had the best screen I’ve ever seen, but the vibration function hardly worked. I actually did an RMA on the device because I thought the vibration didn't work and the ear piece would buzz like hell. I really wish I didn’t do that! The screen was worth dealing with the vibration sucking. Long story short, After I returned the original device, I rooted my RMA replacement and found that the vibration function could be adjusted using an app called Fauxclock123. With that said, the N4’s intensity is set at around 60-70% from the factory. I set mine at about 86% and it felt pretty good. My 3rd device is a REV11 and has the worst screen of the bunch, but the vibration intensity is very strong from the factory.
Please keep in mind that the N4 uses a Linear actuator for its vibration. A linear actuator feels better and makes less noise (less springy), however this is at the expense of intensity. Apple put linear actuators in some of it’s Verizon phones and it caused a bunch of complaints from buyers. My brother has an iPhone with this motor and it feels much weaker than the N4.

Speakers on the bottom

Just curious. I have had this phone for about two weeks. I love it. One thing that's kinda odd is the speakers on the bottom. So when I'm holding it in landscape mode playing a game it disrupts the sound and it's muffled and quite. Anyone else feel the same way? Not a big deal. Just a minor inconvenience.
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
Yes it's very easy to block the speaker while playing in landscape, design flaw I suppose but can be avoided by adjusting one's grip on the phone. Still happens every now and then when I'm not careful.
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yea it is a known issue. Maybe you can remove the back cover and drill holes to the back aligned with the bottom holes.
Then maybe sound can escape from the back.
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk
Yea I usually overcome this by putting my phone face down. Definitely a design oversight.
Most phones have had speakers on the bottom or on the back that result in muffling when holding it.
Owning a Nexus 7 2013, I really miss the stereo sound from it. It is really the only thing I wish my G2 did differently, although I don't know how they'd incorporate a "top" speaker without making it look ugly.

Initially, I considered two speakers on the bottom of G2 as "stereo", but later I found that this is actually a single speaker with "stereo" design

[Q] Loose volume rocker

Hi there, i'm loving the Note 4 but I've noticed the volume rocker is slight loose. It doesn't rattle when the phone is shaken but there's a definite looseness too it!
Is this the same for anyone else out there?
I checked my g/f Note 3 and there's no looseness to it so i was wondering if this is just the Note 4 or should i take it back for a replacement?
Thanks in advance!
Mine is a bit loose too, but I had it on my old S3 as well, so i don't mind too much.
Thanks for the reply JimRex, that's good to hear, i thought i might have a dodgy one!
Loving the phone otherwise!
Any other Note 4 users experiencing the loose volume rocker?

Yes,me too.
Thanks Batfink33, im assuming it's the design, just wish it had been a little tighter as when im paying so much for a premium product you want it to be perfect!
I can live with it though seeing as it's otherwise awesome.
It's definitely there but luckily it's not a defect lol. I'm really loving what they've done so far with metal meeting the soft plastic is a match made in heaven. Hope they make it fit tighter next time.
Mine too a bit loose. On my note 2 its worse
Sent from my SM-N910U using Tapatalk
In which way are all your loose? Mine has a very very small amount of movement when touched but is definitely not loose.
Thanks for the replies everyone!
homer285, it's loose but not to the point where it rattles if shaken. I guess it depends what you class as a small bit of movement really, i was just concerned as i thought there would be no movement whatsoever, nice and tight. It seems though that it's the norm for there to be some movement.
There's even some movement in the power button too.
I'm grateful for the metal surround though, it makes the phone feel so much more premium than previous models!
