Is it just me, or does this Ubuntu release seem a lot like the Firefox Mobile project? How?
Well it seems that Canonical is trying to get mobile phone companies to actually adopt this OS rather than letting consumers install it on their devices, like what happens with Ubuntu Desktop OS.
Unless Canonical makes a really easy, simple way to install this on Android, I feel that this project will go the way of the dodo.
Unless of course, some awesome developers turn this into a custom ROM
It's going to be shown at CES (1/8-11/12), with the gnexus image being released soon. They've already said they want community members (it is open source after all) to help porting it to devices.
Now maybe a good time to get my feet wet with some of this fun stuff...the new Ubuntu and an extra One X floating around in my junk drawer.
Ubuntu for SmartPhones
I think its possible to port this in to most of the android phones after seeing the Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth gives the Ubuntu phone OS demo on a GalaxyNexus which is a mainstream Android phone.

It is possible that later a developper changes it so it can be put on your phone but you will need to wait for that
Being sick of Google's and Qualcomm's disenfranchising my ARMv6 device, I am eager to try this baby. This is not an install over Android but a new OS but also Linux. I think that a Dalvik for this, such as the one for Sailfish/Meego, would be necessary for anyone to get into it. No one is going to install it in place of IOS or Windows. So our investment in the Android "ecosystem" would need protecting.
Android is opensource except for various "prebuilt" jni libraries. These are becoming increasing fatal exceptions.
So a complete opensource OS that one can compile for one's architecture would be most welcome. May Ubuntu will be this.
Minimally, the launcher (really, does anyone care what OS is under the hood?), would be a worthy port in itself!
I'm willing to port onto my HTC inc s with some help from the community.
Dead cookies leave no trails...
Same here for my LG P500 (but this phone is short on RAM for this, I am afraid).
Newer Linux Kernels should facilitate this since the Android mods have been incorporated and ARM devices explicitly supported.

Ubuntu for phones has just been announced today for mobile devices.
Ubuntu for phones website
Ubuntu for phones keynote presentation (Skip to 6:30 for the Mobile OS)
What does that mean for us? Ubuntu for phones supports the full range of ARM processors and also fully supports Android device drivers. Which means Ubuntu for phones should be easy to install on a multitude of android devices including the DINC2.
What does this mean for Devs? You can code in native C and C++ and there is no Dalvik VM to limit what you can and can't do.
We'll be getting a glimpse soon, as the Ubuntu OS will be made available for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the coming weeks.
That looks so sweet
I will keep my eye out for this one!

Regardless it's good to something other than google os. As much as I love android, I wouldn't want google monopolizing the market furthermore. It's about time Ubuntu/Tizen and etc to shine.

Hi,
As a required prerequisite, CM 10.1 has to be ported over the device, because Ubuntu is built on top of it. As of now there are several aspects that need further work, you can check out OliverG96's device tree on github and give it a try. Most pressing would be sound and calls/sms/data, iirc
Hi there, i have been reading a bit about the new Ubuntu touch OS, and seems quite interesting. I just have one question, is Ubuntu for android the same as Ubuntu touch?
And will running ubuntu on the phone solve the sound lag issues found in most android game emulators?
Thanks in advance.
will s3 mini i8190 take ubuntu os
Because i do not understand , is it possible that s3 mini take the new operating system ubuntu os ? I really want to buy that phone , but i also search a phone that will take ubuntu os. Thank you

- Until the Release of the first build this is purely Discussion and the steps leading up to the first build.
- I'm new to the Android Development side of things as all I've ever done was install Mods/ROMS/Recoveries and change a few settings here and there.
- I am in the process of trying to pick up all the skills needed to start this undertaking so it will be a while before you see any sort of real progress.
- If you can list things you think I ought to know please either send me a PM or post.
- I'm currently just setting up Virtual Box Configurations for Development.

I don't suppose that the lot working on Ubuntu could cut out the rubbish that is comparing ARM quad core CPU's with x86 quad core CPU's?
other than that, it's nice to see another somewhat-edge oriented touch interface and will be interesting to try it on my i9305 once releases start coming, probably not gonna be a keeper though.

Unfortunately no, I've had a lot of setbacks lately and getting things sorted. My phone sort of dying and not letting me install most custom Roms has set me back a bit and I'm in the middle of some courses.

My son tried it in his mako (officially supported). Very preliminary version. No market, apps must be installed by terminal Linux commands, even keyboard and language require terminal commands.

In fact unusable. So I can't imagine how it can be here.

I don't know your phone but there is a solution that is supposed to work on every phone with Android img files available. I haven't tried it yet. Try it on your own risk! I won't be responsible for any bricks! (I recommend searching the internet about that first.) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2651425
I would suggest a phone with good UT support though. Nexus 4 for example. We don't know how long it will be supported though. They might switch to the newer Nexus 5.

yeah nvm. found it. it's still non-sprint. but there is a spot on the ubuntu website telling people how to port it, i know very little coding but i'll see if i can make heads or tails of it
Actually, a port was started here. It seems he barely got it up and running, not wanting to do any further optimization until Ubuntu Touch was further along. It appears there hasn't been much developement for quite a while. I hope development returns for the Wave I&II, but I suspect the hardware just won't be up to the task.

On Android's official webpage is information that new Android can run well on devices with 512megs of RAM.
