[Q] APN settings for T-Mobile pre-paid $30 plan - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What are the correct APN settings for HSPA+ on T-Mobile pre-paid, the $30 unlimited data 100 min. plan? Will the defaults work fine when you select "reset to default" or will a manual APN need to be created?
Thanks!

Reset to Default should work.
I have it...

Mine works great on Plug and Play.. But here are the settings I have:
Name T-Mobile US
APN - epc.tmobile.com
MMSC - http://MMS.msg.eng.T-Mobile.com/MMS/wapenc <--- all lowercase
MCC - 310
MNC - 260
APN TYPE - default,supl,mms
protocol - IPv4

Thanks!
I currently have an AT&T SIM in the N4 with a custom "phone" APN. If I switch to a T-Mobile SIM and reset to defaults while the T-Mobile SIM is active, will that wipe the AT&T APN, or does the N4 remember the APNs per carrier?

As long as yoiu don't wipe you can have multiple APNs just switch them in the APN page. There should be a little dot next to it

Well, I was trying to fix my apn settings on my sgs2 import because I was not getting mms messages and I used the "Reset to default" feature in the apn menu. I got three new apn settings that replaced the ones I had put in manually. The new ones are: ATT PHONE, ATT WAP, and BROADBAND. The settings seem to match the ones that are commonly sited for AT&T "4g" phones. So my guess is that AT&T recognized something new about my phone and gave me the "new" sgs2 settings. I used to get the Cingular 410 settings. Everything is working fine now.
You may want to just try Reset to default. I have the new AT&T "4g" sim and I am in the DC area just for reference.

To anybody on a grandfathered unlimited plan or the data for non-Smart Phones plan don't do this. I did, and like the OP said, it overlayed new default settings. These setting don't work unless you're on a 4G data plan. I lost all data connectivity afterward. I deleted the new (now the default) APN settings and replaced them with a new APN I had to create with the orignal settings. I'm also guessing for this to have happened that AT&T now recognizes the international SGS2 as a 4G phone running on their network. Otherwise, why would the default APN settings suddenly change? I hope this doesn't mean the end of the (almost) free ride we've been getting. So any APN settings posted from the AT&T version of the phone will be useless unless you're being billed for an official 4G plan.
In case anyone needs them, below are the standard settings:

Just to clarify, I have the grandfathered unlimited data plan, have a 4g sim and had my account changed to the use the 4G SOC code : HSDPPB. So in my case unlimited data and 4g are not mutually exclusive. I am getting the same speeds (6mbs - 8mbs) as I was when I manually entered the recommended setting from the "fix your apn" thread but now my mms is working.
I am not recommending anyone do it or not do it, just sharing my experience.

Anyone on a 4G plan, no matter how they got there, would benefit from the new APN. Anyone on a 3G plan will lose data connectivity. I get up to 8MB down in a fake-4G area using the Cingular 410 APN on a 3G plan. I get 3MB down at home in an area that's not been upgraded.
APN Settings for 3g on AT&T
Hi everyone. I added a new APN using the settings that BarryH_GEG posted. I had just bought the SGS2 I9100 off eBay. It was bought at a great price. Now, when I had put in my Sim card, it was not recognizing the data network. Weird because it showed my Sim contacts and my Sim and Network info in the About the Phone section in Settings. Because of this forum, it now reads my Sim along with the 3G ATT network. I was starting to get pissed, then realized it was just the APN settings. Now everything works great. Best phone I have ever owned. Thanks again BarryH_GEG for the settings info..

After reading many threads, stretching my Google-fu to the limit, flashing many modems, and spending an hour on the phone with AT$T Tech support, I found a solution and will try to pay it forward.
First roll back to XXKPA modem.
Then create two APNs.
The first:
(Enter only the listed values. Leave all other fields at their default values. )
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
APN Protocol: IPv4/IPV6
APN Type: default,supl,fota,dun
***SAVE!***
Then create the second:
Name: Broadband
APN: Phone
APN Protocol: IPv4
***SAVE!***
Select the radio button for Broadband APN.
Enable and then disable Airplane Mode.
Then you will see the 3g/H+ icons flashing and you are done!

The APN depends on the type of DATA (3G/4G) that is provisioned (SOC) on each individual's account.
1) wap.cingular is the correct APN if your account is provisioned for 3G DATA
2) phone is the correct APN if your account is provisioned for 4G DATA
With regards to the 3G/H/H+ icon that depends on the cell site and not the APN configured on the phone. With GSM technology, the phone tells the cell site this is what I am capable of and the cell site tells the phone what it is capable of and then the phone utilizes the best possible option.
As an example, if the cell site is upgraded to HSPA+ the phone will display H+, if the cell site is only capable of UMTS it would display 3G.

Here is a thread I started a while back that discusses my findings with APNs on AT&T...

Basically, the pta apn worked best and you have to be on the LTE data plan and have an LTE sim to use it. More information is in the thread I posted.

[HELP] Got AT&T sim into International S3, calling works but data doesn't work

I got an international S3 from India and went to AT&T store to get a micro sim.
Got that installed and then the phone calling works fine but data (internet) doesn't work.
They said they would have to register my phone's IMEI but it still doesn't work. They put in a new APN, and still same. They called their tech and they couldn't help. Their last suggestion was to try calling Samsung, but I had to leave to get to work.
I believe there are already people using International version with AT&T for the S3. So any ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks!
Try factory resetting your phone. Other than that, make sure you have the $10/month data plan (unlimited messaging required) or the $15/month data (no messaging required). To do that you'll have to call into customer care and say you have an unlocked non-smartphone. If you go into the store to do this they'll give you the more expensive internet because they'll see you have a smartphone. If you're changing data plans it CAN take 24-48 hours for it to be effective, although it usually doesn't take that long. After that's done go into Settings, More Settings (under Wireless and Network settings), Mobile Networks, and then Access Point Names. Make sure there is an Access Point Name titled "Cingular 410". If there isn't then press Menu, and then "+ New APN". The settings should look like this:
Name: Cingular 410
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
User name: [email protected]
My Password field is auto-filled, so I don't have that. Try leaving it blank, but if that doesn't work call customer care and get that information.
Server: cingulargprs.com
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: Not set
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: Not set
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4
Enable/disable APN: Checked (this field is grayed out for me, but it is checked)
Bearer: Unspecified
This should fix it. The only thing I'm unclear on is the Password part.
Password is (all caps): CINGULAR1

Well now my SIM is completely unregistered, can't even make calls. Operator asked me to go to the store and get a new SIM Card.
So, this won't work without the switch to the non-smartphone data plan? It is going to be hard to pull off when I am in the store.

It should work just fine on the smartphone data plan, and you should be able to switch to the non smartphone data plan afterwards.

Ok, thanks. What should I tell the AT&T store people today when I go in the evening?
It feels like they did something on the account to screw it up. Would it help to suggest that they get this working on an AT&T HTC OneX and then transfer the SIM to my phone?
It could be that you have a defective SIM card. Take it one step at a time. Replace the SIM card. Make sure you have functionality with other services (such as voice and messaging). Check all the APN settings to make sure those are correct. Make sure you have a data plan for AT&T.
I'm on another carrier but I had the same problem at first, only phone call and sms working. I had to change my APN for the Data to work.

[Q] Slow data speeds on AT&T?

Ok, so I just got my N4 last night and so far I am very impressed with it, especially being my first android phone. However, the data speeds seem quite slow, can someone please help me out?
Using this APN I am connected to HSPA + on AT&T but am only getting around 1 Mbps both up and down. Does anyone know what could be causing me to have such slow speeds?

I'm on an AT&T family plan with a sim card pulled from an iphone 5. (Not sure if I answered your question, im not on prepaid though)
I have the same issues. I signed up for at&t family shared 10gb for 3 lines a month ago. I have the GS3 and 2 iphone 5's. 2 weeks ago i bought the nexus 4 and the speeds are bad compared to LTE. I get 3-4 down and 1 up. I used the following APN settings. So far its the best one's that work.
http://forums.androiddoes.net/showt...to-get-good-AT-amp-T-HSPA-speeds-with-Nexus-4
the Nexus 4 works best on t-mobile in the US only because they support HSPA+ while at&t is HSPA and LTE.
AT&T is building up their LTE markets and not upgrading their current HSPA.
Are you referring to the pta one or the phone one? On the pta one I don't get a data connection.
-Bump
Ok you do not get any data with pta apn because your sim is not provisioned for LTE(even if LTE is on your plan). My daughter had an iphone 4s(we have a data share plan which includes LTE) and I switched her to my GS3. She also didn't get any data using the pta APN. I just called at&t and told them they needed to provision it for LTE because the LTE apn wasn't working. They put me on hold, provisioned the sim for LTE and had me reboot and then the PTA apn worked. It was the same deal for my mom when she went from a HSPA+ phone to a LTE phone. She got no data at first until I called and told them her old phone was HSPA+ and her new one was LTE. That's when I learned they have to reprovision it. Of course they wouldn't need to do this if you had originally had an LTE phone

Do you mind testing a few things?
If so, Could you press the menu icon (bottom right corner) in the APNs settings, then select restore to default.
Then power off the device, Open APNs Settings again, and check to be sure the default APN (Should be the only one listed) is selected (Has the blue dot to the far right) then wait a few second, and power the device off and on again..
After devices is back on, check your internet, go to any webpage (other than a google one)
If still not working fast enough, go Back to APNs settings..
Add New, and try these settings...
APN: wap.cingular
User Name: [email protected] (Case Sensitive)
Password: CINGULAR1 (Case Sensitive)
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Auth Type: n/a
APN Type: internet + mms
Bearer: unspecified
Delete the First APN... enable the one you just created (press the radio button so that it turns blue)
then restart the phone.
Remember this phone does not support LTE service, so you may need to have your account provisioned to HSPA+ and not LTE.
Note: The can provision each line of service individually, just not sure if it can be done that way with the Data Share Plans (they did not have those when I worked there.)

[Q] Galaxy S4 APNs for AT&T

I just got my Galaxy S4 yesterday and I am working on optimising it for speed and performance. One of the things that I noticed in the network settings is that I think I APN is set incorrectly.
I have a Nexus 4 and in order to get the best data speed I had to use the AT&T LTE APN or (PTA). I am assuming this should be the same on the Galaxy S4 yet when I go into my APN settings I have the AT&T PHONE APN.
It is my understanding that the Phone APN can only get HSPA+ and not LTE. Since this is an LTE phone shouldn't we use the PTA LTE APN?
I have ATT Phone as APN and I get LTE. Not sure about the other one you mentioned.

Maybe the PHONE APN is capable of receiving LTE but I am curious if the PTA APN would get faster data speeds.
RootzWiki http://rootzwiki.com/topic/31135-att-apns-for-custom-roms/
This post indicates that the PTA APN gets (All the Mbps)
Mine is using the PHONE APN and i have no problems getting LTE. Just did a speed test and i'm getting speeds of 50+Mbps over LTE so it seems to be working fine for me.
PHONE is an APN that AT&T umbrella'd all types of data connectivity under. PHONE will automatically choose to connect to the fastest available network in your area. PTA is what they were putting on phones when LTE phones were first being released, but since then, PHONE is the primary APN one should be using. Using PTA won't hurt anything, and should work fine, but why bother if PHONE is already programmed in there.
At least, that's what they the us at my AT&T Data Support call center I work at :/

Anyone know how to save new APNs? I'm on Omega ROM for the i9505, which has the old Cingular WAP settings in there but no 'ATT Phone' settings so I can use the LTE.
I enter the new APN then go to menu, and then save. However, instead of saving it just goes back to the screen with the one Cingular APN like I never entered or saved anything....

No. This should work out of the box. I was on the phone myself with AT&T and Google for two hours. It's a simple matter of AT&T changing the data plan to LTE, but they won't do it because they do not recognize the IMEI as an AT&T phone. No need to change APN settings. AT&T is basically screwing us. In the coming days I see a LOT of complaints coming. The customer service reps say there is nothing they can do, the network people say there's nothing they can do. Complete nonsense. Now, if you had an LTE data plan PRIOR to switching out phones you're probably going to be OK. It's those of us that were on 3G that will be screwed.
EDIT:
Well, after speaking with endless reps, I found one who was willing to actually do her job. She was sympathetic, did some research, and put in a phony IMEI number that allowed her to upgrade my plan from 3G to LTE. I guess the moral of the story is be persistent, hang up on the reps that say there's nothing they can do and keep trying till you find a rep willing to do their job properly.
By the way, I kept my unlimited status, no worries there.
FUNNY:
I had a call from a sales rep before the issue was fixed. Her solution was "why don't you return your phone, go to an AT&T store, and buy one of ours?"

which is what i was afraid of since i am on the grandfathered plan for 30 bucks unlimited ... no way in hell im going up to 40+ bucks for 2 GB of data.
and yes, i did choose the radio button for it.
they sent in some form to allow ATT to recognize my IMEI which might allow LTE to come in.. i asked about the plan and everything and no one said it wouldnt work... altho i had feared some people might have been told otherwise.

doing research actually, i did find that i even posted that question a few months back somewhere here on XDA...
would you need an upgraded plan to get LTE on ATT even if you have the grandfathered plan ?

You don't need the PTA APN anymore. Just one named phone.
Here's what I have that works perfectly on LTE:
Name: (whatever you want)
APN: phone
Proxy: not set
Port: not set
Username: not set
Password: not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Auth Type: not set
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: unspecified
MVNO type: none
This worked perfectly out of the box for me. I was reading somewhere that they don't really use the PTA APN anymore because that was when they were first turning on their LTE network and now this "phone" APN auto detects and works normally.

right, the issue is i didnt have an LTE phone prior. I had a 3g GS2 so my plan isnt configured to work on the LTE network.
for the Iphone they were honoring the old unlimited data plans for 30 dollar a month just changing the name of the plan to the new one (same price, still unlimited, upto 5GB before throttle)
someone just did this on the phone for me and i did get data using the phone APN now (no more using the old 3g only APN)
hopefully when i get out of the building i work in i can get some LTE reception and see if it worked.

If you haven't had an LTE phone prior, you probably don't have LTE data enabled through AT&T yet. What data plan are you on specifically? Does it say 4G for Smartphones or LTE for Smartphones? I'm thinking you're going to have to talk to AT&T and get them to switch your plan...

thats what they just did. they had the LTE plan unlimited for 30 a month they grant to grandfathered data plans when the iphone 5 came out
i am getting data on the PHONE apn now but still no LTE speeds...
i will call back later on in the day if i dont see LTE speeds coming in (speed test now only gave me 4 down)
they also apparantly sent in a form to get the IMEI covered by ATT which would guarantee they can provide :LTE speeds
went by att store and the guy there said it happens all the time with devices from south america (im in miami)
went to the back, grabbed an IMEI off a boxes device. applied that to my account... BAM ... LTE
I had the same problem with a rep telling me that the phone can't be found in their system. From the research I've done, it looks like you can give them any IMEI number off of a AT&T branded LTE phone and their system will switch your plan over.
Here's a good thread about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021401
