Anyone know if there is any way to hide that annoying sidebar in Gmail? It would be great to view my emails in full screen view. Any ideas?
I believe the only way to do that is to find a way to change the dpi for the mail program to phone size.
I am not around my device to check and see if it is available to change right in Gmail settings.
Thanks for the response. I looked and didn't see any dpi settings in GMail.
Any other ideas?
Maybe this can't be done??
Paranoid android has that option. Flash it. Then you can change the DPI off specific apps

Thanks for the info.
I've unlocked and rooted my Gnex, but I am keeping the N7 stock - in every way. So maybe I just have to live with it.
the sidebar goes away when you open an email in portrait mode, right?

Yes.
I've seen a number of threads on the net about this. It seems like a questionable UI design decision by Google. When you open up the app, nearly half the screen is dedicated to listing all of your labels - imagine if that happend on your PC when you open your Gmail? Would be great (although maybe not possible now) to open to a full-page listing of your email, with the option of opening a view of your labels if needed.
I just didn't know if I was overlooking some setting, but apparently I am not.
Thanks for your reply.

Hi is there a way to rearrange the app icons, I dont really care in what order but when you delete an app it leaves a space where the app used to be which looks weird.
Menu-button -> edit while in the drawer. Works just the way it does on the iphone from there on.

Thanks now I can drag them around but this still isnt that great if you have 7 or 8 pages each with a missing app in them takes a bit of fannying about to get thinks in order. isn't there an auto arrange or sorte by date/name etc?
still if not at least i can get things looking better so thank you.
It is strange how you can manually arrange the icons but there is no way to auto-arrange. Why not have some basic auto-arrange by alphabet name?
Is there a way to like arrange these by catagorie without having to arrange them yourself

I am new to Android; Came from Windows Mobile for years.
I have searched, but have not found how to change the look of the conversation mode of SMS on the Vibrant. I was looking for something a little more professional, than the blue and green bubbles.

check handcent sms in market. very good app with all sort of themes and msg styles. if using dont forget to switch off notifications in original client to avoid double notifications.
Thanks. Are there any cons. to having two messaging apps. on the phone? Can I remove the original?

No cons. I wouldn't recommend removing the original.
Ok, thanks again.
I installed the app., and it let me customize sms pretty much the way that I wanted.
One more thing I think on this, how do I replace the message shorcut, from the 4 shortcuts across the bottom, with the Handcent SMS app. shortcut?

Oh, I figured it out: Applications/Menu/Customizable Grid/Menu/Edit. You are then able to move around some of the 4 icons at the bottom of the screen. When finished, you may select Applications/Menu/Alphabetical Grid, to put the icons back in alphabetical order.
How does one change the 4 apps assigned at the bottom?
[phone, contacts, messaging, applications]
My brother downloaded Handcent and wants messaging to go to Handcent not the stock app.
Thanks

Change the ****ty TouchWiz interface
You cannot. The Epic4G has an older version of TouchWiz and does not allow it.
I recommend you install "AWD Launcher" or "LauncherPro". Both support that feature.
That's....lame...but alright thanks for the suggestion.

I'd suggest downloading ADW, lots of settings and you can get it to look like TouchWiz also.
An additional thing to consider, AMOLED screens suffer from "Burn-in". The most likely place it will happen is the status bar since it is always displayed. These other launchers have a setting that allows you to hide it (status bar), which will help.
Technically it would be more accurate to call it "Burn-out" but the burn-in term is carried over from CRT displays. The issue has a similar result. You will see a ghost of items that are on the screen for long periods.
Just download Handcent. When you hit the messaging icon at the bottom it will ask you if you want to use the stock app or Handcent (then you can check - remember this choice). Now whenever you hit the SMS icon (it will still appear to be the same...). It will open Handcent.

Tried it. Didn't work. Doesn't prompt me to select SMS client of choice. I even went into Application Mgmt and deselected Messenger as default. No go.
Any advice? Handcent is...er' was my fave SMS client.
Same thing happened to me. Handcent was the first app I downloaded, always use it, and I was never asked to choose a default.
Sad news on another front: The pre-release, advocate and seed devices were supposed to get the full version of Asphalt 5, and when I finally got around to downloading it today, it was the demo. I'm slightly miffed.
I have one homescreen that has my emails and calendar. I would either like it hidden or with its own look screen. is there an app or a launcher that does that. i apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to post.
I'm a little shaky on understanding what you mean. Are you trying to ask if you could have different wallpapers for each home page? Can you elaborate a bit more?

I have 3 homescreens. 2 are general, roughly divided by activities and contain and have no easy access to sensitive information. The third homescreen has my emails, my calendar, office access and has widgets to have the information visible on the homscreen. I don't want everyone who has access to the table to have access to those accounts.
When I am working on my tablet i like these things to be there and easily accesbile to me. Therefore, I would like to be able to either hide this homescreen - not accessible by casual presses or swipes, or separately lockscreen it. so even if the tablet is unlocked and active, say I hand it to a colleague, if they scroll through the homescreens, this one either wouldn't show, or would have a second lock screen, without showing the content of the real homescreen.
you can password protect individual applications. http://www.android-password.com/
I Know I can do that, but what i want to do is hide one of the homescreens that has widgets to those apps open.

I think I know what deecee52 is asking for, and I don't think it's possible, But I'd really like to thank you for that link
Not sure if it will help but you can simply install a second launcher and set it up with the widget/app you want to hide and create a invisible shortcut (in the corner of a screen or something).

thats why i gave the link and the alternate idea, because at this time i dont think you can lock an entire home screen without that functionality being built into the launcher itself
Thanks for the suggestions. I like the idea of Regina 3d, although it doesn't seem to be on the market anymore.
I've thought of two browsers and widgetlocker, not sure if it will work. Hoping one of our crack devs might look into this for one of the launchers
Hi,
you might have some luck looking into the hide calls/sms/apps on the market to see if they have a setting that would allow you to do what your looking for. there are several ones that you could try but please read them carefully because i do know that with some if you lock something (say a photo) this way and forget the password you will not be able to access your information/pics/sms files etc you've locked. all of these are avail in the market & range from free-$12 (loky)
extreme call blocker, lock, secrets, horizon, secret phone settings & loky
not sure if any of these will do what you want but what your asking for to my knowledge can only be done with Regina 3d as meantioned already...which is a great app btw
Also take a look into child protection type apps. I did come across Smart lock 2.0 which seems rather close to what you had described.

thanks for the child safe approach. As I said the Regina Launcher is very attractive and the separate workspaces get pretty close to what I would like. It does not yet play well on tablets as it is only in portrait mode. I will definitely report back when I have had time to play around with some of these ideas.
Just got the Note 3 thru T-Mobile..had it for about 9 days. Cant send/recieve pics, even to myself.
Switched to the stock SMS/MMS app and it works fine. Anyone else experienced this? I kinda like Handcent because I can have a LED light notify me of a unread SMS/MMS..stock app only gives me a sound.
Handcent sms just updated and fixed the issue.

I'll check it out.
As much as I hate Handcent 5, I tried it, but no go for me. Again searching for a new messaging app. Stock would be fine if it wasn't bubbled.
Themagicm, did you have any luck?
Yes. Seems to be working for me. I'll test some more and if it craps out I'll reply back.
False alarm. Sending works....some recieving works. Uninstalling. The only reason I use it is because I can change the LED color to notify me of unread TMs.
I just now uninstalled Handcent as well. I went over to goSMS. Far from ideal, but at least I can again send receive MMS, as well as receive MMS over wifi.
The original messaging app works for me though...I just want the LED to flash a color of my choosing. Lol

I was looking at that one, but didn't want to shell out money just to try it as I couldn't find a demo. I know I can return it after a few minutes, but would prefer to test it over a few days. Is it that much better/different than others?

Just tried sliding messaging...swiping left and right to loop through conversations? Seriously? There may be ways to change that in the settings but I'm not going to lose my refund window you find it.
I just wish there was a demo, even if it was crippleware, too go through the options. Looked like there was potential, I'll see if I can learn more about it abd may reconsider

Yea you can change that through settings. It is still different from other messaging apps. Easy to get a hang off. Won't use any other sms app now.

I paid for it and used it for a day. Buggy, UI layout can't be changed only colors, stuck in conversation style, when using dark theme you can't see new message notifications on your conversation list since there's no way to change the black highlight color.
I'm sure it fills a niche and I see it has it's fans, but the sliding seems gimmicky and underwhelming. even with the maximum customization that I could do, the best I could do is get it close to 8sms, which is more reliable and less bloated.
They definitely need a free version, or at the very least, a trial period. There's too much in the app to get a feel for it in 15 minutes, and you'd spend most of that time attempting to MANUALLY configure it to send and receive MMS.
I say all this not to bust on the app, as it may be just right for some, but just to throw it out there that if you're used to a handcent-level of customization, this isn't for you.

I dont know what you did but you can change the UI layout. There are 4 different styles. It isn't buggy for me. maybe bad install for you. I do admit that sliding between messages wasn't for me so i disabled it in settings. In theme seting in sliding menu mode choose fullscreen sliding menu or choose no sliding menu.to change display layout it is under theme settings too. Mine highlight color for new messages show up in red highlight and I chose Dark blue theme. Yea like you say it might not be for some.

Right. The layout, meaning where things are located, is the same though. Just the styling of the layout can be changed. For example, I want my contact picture on the left, so that it's in a vertical list and not alternating.

Ahh. I didn't notice that. It would have made it a bit more pleasant. Thanks for at least making me aware of it. I had done the SMS app search before and came up blank so it was at least interesting to learn about and try something new.
