I like many people was having issues where the AC adapter would randomly stop charging my tablet. Someones it would start working again soon after and sometimes almost an entire day would go by before it started working again.
Tried the freezer trick with no results. Was going to send it back to Asus when I noticed 2 things.
1. The adapter was very not every time it stopped charging.. hotter than it usually gets when functioning correctly.
2. It only ever stops charging when i'm using a usb 3.0 extension cable.
To test this i stopped using the extension able for about 2 weeks and the adapter functioned properly the entire time. Then last night I reconnected the extension cable and within 5 minutes of of being plugged in charging stopped and the adapter was extremely hot. This obviously leads me to believe that the extension cable is in some way effecting the adapters voltage or something and causing it to malfunction. So I'm curious as to how many of the others who having issues are also using extension cables.
Not the voltage the current the more current it has to push the hotter its going to get and the chargers for these are not designed for extensions they where designed to be small and charge the tf even then there at there limit

I also was having trouble with over heating and have been using an 3.0 extension cable. I will stop using it and report back.

its a design flaw with the ac addapters and its one of the reasons that the cable that ships with the transformer is so short
I was just using the cable as is with no extension and it died on my twice. I now have it rigged up to charge from my PC's PSU and only use the adapter when I'm not at my house.
My charger melted my damn usb cable. Thats how hot it got..
I wasnt using the extension cable at the time.
The adaptor would always warm up, which i read was normal. A few days ago, however, i felt some heat on the cable itself.When i reached to the connector, i noticed it had literally melted the rubber casing off the wire.
Im in the process of sending it back today
Just had my second charger die on me! I was charging my Dock and Tablet during class from 2:50-4:10 and when I unplugged it the charger was pretty hot. I went back home and connected the TF to my rigged up PSU charger and then went to class at 6:10 and plugged in the charger and unsurprisingly it wouldn't charge!

Ive heard reports of people solving these problems by swapping round the mains pins ( I guess only in countries that use 2 pin outlets, UK have 3 )
I am sure this will sound nuts but, put the wall charger in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for a few hours. Please do not forget the plastic bag. There is a thermal heat fuse inside the brick that needs to be reset. If it is still working the cold will make it reconnect and bring the brick back to working order.
You should make a DIY charger by following "DevCake" thread on DIY AC and DC chargers for the TF.

I just do not understand why we would have to go out of our way for their crappy idea of a charger. I understand the idea of not allowing aftermarket chargers because they want the money for the chargers but i mean if you do that then at least make something worth having besides giving us a heater...does this remind anyone of the rrod( red ring of death) for the xbox... to much of a hurry to send out their product they didnt really test EVERY aspect of their device...this makes me sad..and then need to send it back and what not taking up more of our time then not being able to use the tablet because your chargers going back... i wish customer service was better....that is all
just a quick pop here.
but i have found that if you charge the dock and tab separately there are no problems with the adapter. and besides charging while the tab is docked into the keyboard is kinda a waste as its charging the keyboard dock, and at the same time its discharging and trying to charge the tab at the same time. hence causing the strain on the adapter.
besides charging both at once will just kill the keyboard dock in the long run

Mine doesn't speed charge my Transformer even without the extension cable. Maybe I'll do some testing with that though and check the heat, since the damn thing doesn't work anymore anyways. Though I might not get any results because of that

There are many problems with the charger, many different problems.
I barely use my dock, so I have only been charging my TF standalone. Still stopped working though late last week.
Hmmm, issues here as well...
Charger stopped working at times and then start working again... Now it's not working and sticks with that plan. Pluggin in the charger with the TF turned off makes it boot so something IS happening, it doesn't charge though.
Luckily I have another charger (no original asus but using another adapter + usb-cablethingie) so I can atleast charge it, but still. Was thinking of buying another asus adapter (the travelpack) but really doubting it now if it's a general issue.
Will try the freezer trick anyway and some other stuff... Quite annoying though (for an otherwise excellent product).
i thought the accessories that comes with the TF are all covered under a one year warranty?
and the problem with the adapters suddenly dying is probably the capacitors in the charger or the stepdown transformer in it anyone had a chance to open one yet?

An Asus UK tech support guy actually told me not to charge both the tablet and dock at the same time. Pretty poor if you ask me. They just went silent when I pushed the matter.
They have compromised the design in their desire to make a fashionably tiny charger.

Actually it is charging, but not with the voltage it requires for the "quick charge". Mine does the same thing. If you turn off the screen or turn off the TF and leave it plugged in, it charges at ~3%/hour. Not very useful if you're a heavy user but better than nothing until you get a new charger.
I may be really lucky: the only time I've ever had a failure to charge, has been fixed by taking off the plug and snapping it back.

Now you mention this, it indeed does... slow but it does charge. Damnit, luckily I have another charger but this annoys the crap out of me.

I'm going to get another charger tomorrow when I go pick up a joystick for Battlefield 3
Then I'll contact Asus I guess and get it RMA'ed. Going to try and get some free shipping out of them. Sometimes I am successful sometimes not haha

I get the same, snap off the plug convertor and back on again and back in business again!
My transformer died... and now it won't turn on. The battery was low, so it was probably that... but I thought I charged it.
So I now think my cable is no good. the charger is for sure fine.
Does anyone know what pins to test on my transformer cable to check for voltage? it's either the cable or the transformer port itself that's broken.
before dying, the usb transfer worked. but it wouldn't charge...?
anyone know what pins could cause that?

Put the charger in a plastic bag and throw it in your freezer for an hour. Take it out and check to see if it works then. It probably will.

Try to trickle charge off computer and see if it is the block. If it is then put in the freezer like Gary said. But my cable stopped working to transfer data so I had too buy a new one. So Maybe it is the cable?

I also find that sometimes the charger goes "dumb" and you have to physically unplug the block from the outlet or surge protector and plug it back in for it to start charging again. Have you tried this? See if you can get it to charge by doing this, otherwise I second testing the USB cable portion only by connecting it to your PC and having it charge through USB although this is very slow and will take a long time. It also won't charge if you're using the tablet since USB doesn't supply enough power, it might also not charge if the tablet is on at all I believe. Just make sure it's off ad leave it on USB overnight.
I think my friend's just had the same exact problem since last week. It just suddenly stopped charging. My friend though his transformer died.
The cable won't charge but if connected to a PC, it will recognize the tablet. It will not trickle charge. I am going to RMA the cable.
Do you have a USB extension cable in series with the TF cable? The charger needs to see a gnd on pin 7 of the USB connector. If it doesn't it will only charge at 5V and it takes days to charge with the TF off. If no extension cable, plug in to a powered computer and leave TF sit for 10-20 hrs with TF off. It will charge slowly, but bring battery level back high enough that the TF charger will not think it is shorted and shut down

I searched and can't seem to find any threads on this topic. Odd thing is I don't get any SOD or RR on ICS but can't use my damn tablet if its charging lol. Anyone have any input on this?
just for giggles. switch the orientation of the wall charger plug and try it.
I've seen this when charging on a plane. I assume it has something to do with the voltage being supplied.
Are you using some kind of third party charger? These have been known to cause problems on any sort of technology.
I have seen this on my wifes tf once before, never on mine or my spare...
But with 50% of my micro USB cables it will happen on my infuse... Most frequently while charging in the car. The issue seemed to be a combination of crappy cables and crappy chargers and heat... If my phone was hot it was far more likely to occur than if it was cold. I haven't charged my phone via a plug on months though, I have 4 batteries I rotate, keeping 3 charged at all times

I think it's a voltage thing. Im a long distance courier and i have an ac adapter in my van. When charging through a regular wall socket everything is fine. Yet when plugged into my inverter the screen is not responsive, as soon as i unplug it is fine. I typically use my tablet for netflix while im on the road. So i usually end up pressing play then plug it in. My inverter is rather weak, i was thinking of buying a higher output to see if it corrected things.
This post doesn't really help you, just letting you know you're not alone. If you can't charge while plugged into a wall socket, perhaps your charger is defective and is not sending out the proper current?

Hmm. Most likely its my third party power adapter. It's odd that the transformer won't allow variations in voltage. I've never had an issue with any device in the past 10 years using third party power adapters. Guess I'll have to spring for a 30 dollar asus charger . Thanks for the input guys.

Same thing happened with my SGS.
So, it's not a TF only problem.
Happens on Nook Color too.
Sometimes it's not just unresponsive, it's erratic and causes touch events to register all over the screen for no reason. These happen only when plugged in so I assume there's some voltage issue.
I just noticed today, that my HTC phone basically has the same setup. The same charger, then the USB to micro-USB cable. So would it be the same thing to charge with either cable?
I was shuffling with the 2 chargers today.. but if I only need to use one, then that's even better! And I can travel with just 1 charger for my 2 devices too!
Shouldn't be a problem i hardly ever use the correct usb charger for my devices apart from tablets that need the higher power output.
The nexus may not work on the phone charger but the phone should work fine on the nexus charger.

The Nexus7 charger is 5v 2A, look at the HTC amp output if it is 1A it will take longer to charge the Nexus7, if it can even keep up if the unit is on.
I would use the Nexus7 charger for the phone and tablet if you want to cut down on taking chargers while going on trips.
I use the Nexus7 charger on my ET4 and it goes to full charge pretty quick....lol

Edit: In short..no it won't damage your phone
i use my kfire charger because the cord is longer lol. google skimped on the charger cord it's !!short!!

Another good idea! My HTC's charger cable is longer..
I guess I'll use the Nexus 7's charger with the HTC cable = win
I prefer the Kindle Fire charger or the Playbook or HP touchpad charges took the OEM charger that comes with the Nexus 7
I just got another Playbook charger just for that purpose, it is 6 ft long, much longer than the Nexus charger.

As long as the charger puts out 5v you'll be fine.
Also, stories on xda suggest not gaming on the n7 on low battery while plugged into a charger other the packaged one.
Got a new H918, however when I use the fast charger it was supplied with the phone only charges for a short amount of time (5-10 minutes) then stops. After that, it slowly begins discharging all the while the charging icon on the battery symbol is displayed.
I had it plugged in overnight, checked cables... even bought a brand new genuine charger and cable and that made no difference either.
However when I use my four year old charger for the LG G Pad (still 1.8A but only 5V, no 9V support) it slowly charges to 100% as normal.
Tried a couple of other chargers, they all charge the battery slowly up to 100% as you'd expect. Fast chargers (Samsung or LG) on the other hand stop after 5-10 minutes as I said above.

Maybe a defective battery, mine was when I was got it and had to buy a new one

I find it strange how the battery is fine when plugged into an old charger, but won't work with fast chargers at all.
Have you had the very same experience, or was your battery dead irrespective of the charging unit?

Mine would show charged, then pop up a msg saying invalid battery and shut down the phone. Battery suggestion was the easiest and least expensive option to troubleshoot your problem. Of course if the phone is under warranty I'd send it in.

I'd like to report back, in case someone else happens to stumble upon the very same problem.
Got a new genuine battery off ebay and replaced the one I got with the phone. It worked straight away - managed to (fast) charge it using the original charger from 0% all the way up to max.
What a relief! Thank you again for pointing me in the right direction @cnjax.
