[Q] Noob root question ab out backup - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am planning on using WugFresh's tool to root my Nexus 7 32 gig. Do the backup and restore tools put back all the apps and data or do the apps have to be reinstalled? I just want to be sure I don't lose anything and it would be really nice if I could root and have everything right like it is on the device.
Thanks in advance!

Just use the tool to backup if you don't know how to backup manually.

ya did that

If it is set up to do so, once you enter your Google account credentials it will automatically download your apps to the device. Otherwise you can go into the play store under your apps and download them.

I recommend backing up using Titanium Backup, copy the backup file to the Nexus 7 and restore. This way, your data is also restored. Useful for games or apps that do not have backup capabilities. I.e. Generate data file.

Thanks. But I'll need to be rooted otherwise I'll have to do 1 app at a time, correct?

If your titanium backup backups are stored on Google Drive you won't have to transfer any files. If there not then do so now

If you're not rooted you can't backup with titanium and the 1 app at a time is only for restoring with the free version of titanium.

well, that also means we have to be rooted when trying to restore to Nexus7 right?
Yes, Titanium Backup requires root to function in any capacity.
Is there anyway for Titanium Backup Pro (or another Play Store app) to create app+data .apk files that an un-rooted Nexus 7 could install?
ADB backup, perhaps...

download DataSync in the play store...you can transfer apps and data over wifi.
I personally just sync with AppBrain app market. That allows you to automate the process of downloading some what. Not as nice as titanium, buy it is an option that won't force you to root day 1.

YES or NO Question about flashing kernel and backups

Hello everyone! Hope you're having a great day today!
The question I'm asking is really simple and can be answered just by yes or no, but explanation will be appreciated.
The question is that when I backup in the recovery (TWRP) to flash a custom KERNEL, do I have to backup the whole system and data and boot.img?
I'm asking this because not only backing only boot.img is faster, but saves a lot of space on my phone, which is important to me.
Thanks
Boot.img is the kernel, no need to backup the whole system.

I always do a clean backup, that is, after unlocking the bootloader and root.

What do you mean that you don't have to flash the whole system??
How would you restore the ROM
If the system apps aren't backed up?
Not flaming you,
But I would like to know if that's possible b/c
A whole ROM backup with 78 user apps
Takes up a lot of space on my phone

I have one backup of my whole system. Then I go from there flashing other roms and such

Boot.IMG is the kernel + ramdisk. Just wanted to clarify that.

Yeah I know that but I want that since the kernel I want to flash (Franco) had its own ramdisk. Thanks though

What I was saying is that if I wanted to ONLY change the kernel, if I can backup the boot.IMG only which is basically kernel +ramdisk.

I am also trying to understand the backups before installing ROMs and kernels. What if I don't have enough space on my nexus 4 (16gb) to create an entire backup (with user apps, stock rom, ect.)? Say I used all of the space installing my apps and there isn't enough space left for a copy of it (the backup)?

Is there anyway to back it up directly to a computer rather than onto the N4's internal memory? Maybe keep the boot.IMG backup in the internal memory. That way it could be installed easily if something went wrong. All the user data/apps and stock rom would then be stored on the computer. Can that be done?
Edit:
I found out how to backup the user data to the computer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34744848&postcount=4
One last question - Is it possible to delete previous backups that were stored directly on the device?

As far as I know it is not rooting that wipes it. It's unlocking the boot loader. So, yes. You can have root permissions but not be able to flash anything.
Oh... So if i wanna root and flash another rom I will have to wipe? And if so what is the easiest way? Link?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
In order to root you will have to unlock the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader wipes the Nexus7

Well just to make sure, I would get my backup from the play store, backup ur apps and then do the backup from the tool kit so that the toolkit backup backs up the my backup app... After u do that, restore with the toolkit and then restore with the app...

What about pre-installed apps?
I've been searching for an answer to a similar question. I want to unlock/root my Nexus 7 straight out of the box (it's getting delivered Monday) so I don't have to worry about losing everything down the road when I start doing stuff that requires root access. What I want to know is this: If the very first thing I do with the Nexus 7 is root it, will it essentially be the same as if I hadn't rooted it? In other words, would all of the pre-installed stuff still be there (ie. maps, gmail, etc)? Is there anything on the device before rooting that would be gone after rooting, and if something is gone, is it just a matter of re-installing it from the Play store?
This is a terrible noob question, but I want my first experience with my Nexus 7 to be just as it would have been if I *hadn't* rooted it for a while, but avoid the headache of having to wipe everything once I eventually decide to start messing around with it. Any and all info is appreciated!
Dude don't worry, when you get it, just root it like how the other guy showed in this forum. Don't install anything but root it and then do all your stuff. Rooting doesn't do anything or doesn't change the interface. After you root everything should be the same.. Maybe you will loose some Google apps but you can easily download those from the app store again. What will change depends on you. When you root it, you can install custom roms... That is what changes your interface and stuff. But that's your choice.
Use the toolkit.... You must first install the drivers for your nexus... The tool kit Wi have an option. Then click the unlock and then click rooy
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
Cool, yeah. I just wasn't sure if when it wiped during the unlock if anything that would be annoying to get back would be lost. I don't mind reinstalling stock apps as long as they're easy to get, but if there had been anything special that gets wiped out then I'd be hesitant to actually do it. Knowing myself, I know that at some point I'm going to want to start messing around with different ROMs and stuff, so like I said I'd rather just root it from day 1 even if I don't plan to do anything right away so I don't have to deal with wiping it a month down the road .

I've tried using version 1.8 of Wugs Toolkit for my Nexus 7 2012. My tablet has been very unstable. It's on 4.4.2 and never been rooted. I can't uninstall apps without crashing and if I can they are there when I reboot it.
With the Toolkit I can't get it to unlock my device. I get developer access and click the unlock button but it will not unlock it. I don't care if I lose everything on the tablet I just want a stable tablet back again.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I should add that I do get the screen that says proceeding will void warranty. Choose Yes to continue. I choose Yes and my tablet just boots up and is still locked. The version of Android is KOT49H is currently on my tablet. It's WiFi 2012 edition.
I have also tried to do a Factory Reset and it goes to the bootloader screen and says it's wiping cache then device but my tablet reboots and nothing has changed.
The last thing I should add is that my tablet does recognize my ADB device and passed the toolkit configuration with success. The tootlkit can see my tablet it just won't complete the unlock.

Migrate from Kitkat stock to MIUI without data loss.

As the title says, is there any way for me to migrate to miui from stock 4.4.3 without any kind of data loss?
A detailed reply would be beneficial.

You can backup your data from your sdcard and do a nandroid backup, but this will not work with different roms. At least this is my experience. I went from miui to cyanogenmod and it wont accept my backup.
But try titaniumbackup instead if you have rooted your device.

Thats totally okay. Do you just want to backup your sdcard storage or the app data? You can restore your app data with titanium backup, but you have to install all your apps manually.
When switching between different roms, backup app datas doesnt make that much sense though

Backing Up And Restoring ???

Thanks !

Titanium backup should work, but don't restore any system apps. If you want pics, music etc copy then to your pc and copy then back to your new device

You can also use Helium Backup, it will backup everything including contacts and Apps
