18 months with my SGS 2. Goodbye, my friend - Galaxy S II General

So I was quite happy with the SGS2, but starting to crave a new toy. I wonder if your mind realizes that and quietly works against you.
It is a great unit and the extended battery solved my remaining complaints. But yesterday it finally slipped off my hand and landed with the butter side down.
Goodbye my friend, I'll get you a new screen from Ebay when pocket allows. Meanwhile, a Galaxy Note II N7100 was ordered

It's still such a good phone and I think I would buy it again if mine would die today, because I don't like all these 4.8 inch phones and for 299€ (current price in germany) I think it's the best phone.

Well cant say anything my friend dropped his S2 lucky for him nothing happened... Luck matters a lot.. And regarding the screen size, when i bought S2 most of my friends had small phones they said how can i handle such a big phone well i got used to the size; after seeing my colleagues Note 2 well my S2 looked tiny

Unlucky, man. I have dropped my S2 a LOT, esp while out drinking, and it has always survived. I think I'd buy another if mine died.

Oh my God I have dropped my S2 many times but it survived every time .

My old case protector was showing serious signs as I have dropped mine many times (i think the protector was at issue).
I have recently changed to a different case protector with more grip and better shock absorbancy.
These phones can take a lot.

This is exactly why mine is in an otter box case. I was on holiday and decided to climb some cliffs to see the view (was amazing I was about 3 floors up) then put my phone back in my pocket (it was at least 3 quarters out I didn't realise) I jumped over a gap and it fell out, it then bounced down to the bottom of the cliff and landed half in a rock pool. I thought this was the end, climbed down and there wasn't a scratch on it

Where the gorilla of ur s2 ?....

OP, I'm also moving to the Note II. My S2 has survived these 18 months gracefully (and with just one tiny scratch on the screen without a case or screen protector despite having been dropped many times) but it's time to move onto that quad-core HD goodness. It sure has been fun! I remember just getting into ROMs, what with CM9, D4 ROM, CM10 and so forth. The experience was fun and it taught me so much.

I'd rather wait for these full HD screens with very large DPI and, hopefully, Samsung will not revert to PenTile Display again, like they did when they built the S3 (after the S2 having had RGB matrix).

Since Dec.15...mine got buried in sand, lost it, dropped it and finally spent an hour under heavy rain.
holidays man....
PS: Spaceships endure

If you were a true dedicated S2 owner you would have sent the screen to be replaced. This was simply a convenient excuse to get a new phone

It seems whenever there is a jump in resolution Samsung switches to PenTile to offset the costs. But I do hope the S4 gets a full RGB matrix.

True...op is a traitor.
Where there is a will there is a way. True love knows no bounds and limits. You were not worthy of an sgs2 in my opinion.

RIP
great phone!

Mine fell so many times it's a miracle that from a couple of scratches on the sides the whole unit isn't destroyed. One time even from a 1st floor balcony down on the pave. My boss uses an SGS3 and I must say, my S2 feels much better quality build wise.

I broke my AMOLED screen while skiing. It is replaceable and a lot cheaper than buying a new phone. You can find new screens on ebay for $70-$80 usually. Make sure you find out whether you have an AMOLED or SLCD so you can get the right screen. Google can help you determine that.

I have an AMOLED screen but i dont wish it to replace. I'm looking for replacement between a Galaxy Nexus or a White Skyrocket for $200. My Nexus One still works. I still use it with the broken screen to call my boyfriend (I'm female), i just memorized how to get into the favorites contacts and call, hehe but just him. It's useless screen is now completely black and non existant.
I was charging it and it suddenly fall down into the floor, as usual. It was not a very hard hit per se, but must be the angle.

Heck, she should send me the broken N1. I'll fix it up good as new. Luckily, I'm still using my N1 without any major issues. I'm due for an upgrade sometime next year. HTC Nexus 4 I hope?

Galaxy S3 - I'm in love!

It's a rumor, but looks beautiful. My Vibrant will be 2 years old this summer, and if S3 is true I'm getting it. Yeah, I know about the GPS and Android update of non-support from Samsung/T-Mobile. But I trust Android Devs to release the best ROM & Kernels anyway.

My friend has taken my vibrant and thrown it at a wall of from atleast 10 ft. away nothing but a scratch on the bezel.
Then he put his iPhone 4S 2 ft away from a wooden desk (school) and literally just PUT it down and the back cracked at the top, internal only though.
these Android phones are tough as hell.
Most bullet proof plates to stop rifle rounds are made of ceramic.

Diamonds are not the "hardest" material, in the way of the most difficult material to break, diamonds are actually the hardest material to scratch, they are actually very easy to break with a hammer or maybe dropping them to the floor. But yeah I get your point, samsung is just the new nokia XD.

I used to be in this camp. I recently scooped a Galaxy S2 and that size screen is perfect. Fits comfortably in my pants front pocket, I'm 6 foot. The Vibrant feels puny now lol, but the screen resolution at 4.0 inches is perfect. I notice more distortion at 800 x 480 @ 4.52 inches unfortunately.

That's exactly it. There's no way I'm getting stuck looking at fuzzy icons for 2 years just so Samsung and T-Mobile can disappoint me with the lack of support since we all know the moment the GSII HD, or "+" drops, so will support for the GSII.

How would you describe the GN2?

Not a smartphone, not a tablet, ...the future of pen and paper.
The modern day filofax?
It obliterates the competition.
To qualify, been a htc fanboi since spv. Loved how the wife's iphone keyboard never makes a spelling mistake, despaired how htc keyboard was useless. Blown away how everything just worked with the wife's ipad 3, unlike cheap android tablets. This leads me to this ultralight technological revelation, the Note 2. I've never used anything that you can write with a pen, that is so accurate. In business we still write so much on paper, this really feels like the future. Okay, I admit I'm blown away by it. And I never liked samsung mobli's before.
One criticism... this god awful cheap and nasty plastic chrome ring around the phone. Hellloo? 550 quid, give us some metal. The silver back of the iphone 5 is soo blinging tasty. But if metal adds weight, leave it off, the lightness of this device will make your jaw drop.
Happy rant over. Lol
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Whenever some says, 'is that your phone?' I always say, "yes. It's more of a pocket tablet though".
My own rant: current media definitions of phone/tablet/phablet are STUPID.
Since when does something suddenly become 'something else' if it is .1 inches wider?
Does that happen with any other piece of technology?
- Frank
I would describe it as the new Jesus Phone!
its a mini tablet, or a big smartphone. or phablet

I just received my Note 2. I purchased it to replace my 10.1" tablet and I couldn't be more pleased with it. My ASUS TF700 & kbd dock go up on eBay today - I won't miss hauling it around.
I tend to think of the Note 2 as a mini tablet more than a phone but I'm hoping that perception changes a bit as I carry it the next month or two. If I can see using it as my phone and tablet in one device I'll be purchasing the T-Mobile branded version with my upgrade when the Note 2 is released through T-Mobile. My .16 year old son really wants one of these things as a replacement for his WiFi Ipad 2 (we're not providing him with data for his phone - he'll need a job for that) so I'll trade him my international Note 2 for his Ipad if I doget the T-Mobile version.
Maybe it's a phablet. Time will tell.

I went to the store and compared my note 1 to a note 2 - nothing great about the note 2 at all. Really no more real estate just slightly taller - so worthless to me - than even lesser resolution. So I will wait. Glad they announced this because bigger really does help me - as a prof / researcher / grad chair on a multi campus university - I can do so much with the Note. A little bigger is even better. Best thing about announcing the Note 3 - vaporware or not - is I do not have to keep thinking about getting the Note 2. I have a reason to be happy with my Note 1 and wait. Peace of mine.
for me it really depends.
if it's nearly as large as the nexus 7, then no. I won't buy it. if it's only a little larger than the current note 1/2 and the bezel is tiny. then I might consider it.

its is kinda frustating 'cause i was about to buy the case the next day.. so [email protected]"#4 bad luck i guess huh? :crying:
Yeah I got my phone and not 3 days later it was plugged in on the kitchen island at my sisters when my other brother comes over with his son and not 2 minutes later I look up and hes yanking the cord and BAMMM all I see is my life flash before my very eyes... so funny cause it was super slow motion in my mind as the phone slides off the counter and hits the tile.. luck for me all I got was a scratch on the bevel.. unlucky as the Ottorbox defender case wasnt in stores at the time and didnt come in the mail fast enough

i droped mine 3 feet face down on marble
not even single scratch
i guess just lucky
i droped my iphone ,4-5 feet on tile and damn whole left upper corner dented but was happy with it coz the way it fell i thought would have been shatterd
Guys, you know there are 4 external parts.
Rear cover
Mid plate
Glass
S pen
The bezel you're referring to can be replaced for about £10/$15, with no skills and standard phone dismantling tools (which are often included in your purchase of spare parts).
This is why I don't use a case, and why I think people with aluminium phones are idiots. I've bought my replacement mid-plate (bezel if u like) and rear cover all ready for the day I eBay it, or if it gets too knocked up to look at.
Rejoice in your plastic, and don't spend £10+ on a case if the only reason you want it is to protect the plastic...
Did your note's edges hit the floor? If it did then it sure is a miracle:good:
*spen, front speaker grill, home button, camera and flash
For those pedantic few, I originally left out the bits which I think you can get away if scratched.

lucky you guys,
I dropped it ONCE on the floor from belt level (I was 172 CM), and bam, top right corner is now bent.
Dropped it while getting down frm mumbai local train...and all the scratches were ôn d scratch gaurd, not a single scratch on d screen..

Do not try this with iPhone.
cracked screen
After like dropping the phone a thousand times (yes, quite sometimes while being drunk) the outer plastic frame has some scratches, and the top right corner has two cracks right abovethe front camera (which still works like a charm). Not so bad
lucky. i have dropped my phone so many times..
aaand she's still pretty from the inside.
