XT557D pushing an APK with locked boot loader. - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My boot loader is locked, but I have the original APK and need to copy it to the /system/app parition on my phone. Is this even possible? I've trying running it as an update, Phone.zip, but it claims the signature is not verified and restarts again.
I'm not able to do anything with ADB, since the phone seems to be "soft bricked."
Anyhelp would be awesome!
Thanks,
--tj

You need root. Then use root explorer to copy it to system/app and set correct permissions.

Ok, so I have root, but boot loader is locked, and it seems my only option is the stock recovery. It seems my phone is "soft bricked" until I'm able to obtain a signed and verified update? This is a Republic Wireless phone that was rooted, but then "soft bricked" by copy an invalid Phone.apk to the /systam/app paritition.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Okay, since this is a Republic Wireless XT557D, I'm guess my phone is staying "soft bricked" until something is released? I'm willing to try anything with this phone, since a replacement is going to set me back $250.

You can get a SBF file which is the stock firmware of your phone and flash it with RSDLite. Then your phone will be back to normal. (thats how it works for the defy)

Well... There isn't an XT557D available, since Republic Wireless has created it. If there is an SBF that will work on this phone, please let me know.

is there an sbf for the Republic XT557D anywhere? Please Help...

Anything? As oSandmaNo has stated, once you have exhausted all chances of getting ADB or poking around in terminal than it seems like, from what everyone here and on the Defy/Defy+ thread, you'll have to flash a SBF. Trying a SBF from a phone which uses the same chipset could get your phone booting - though never again working with RW.
Finding which SBFs work with your XT557D could help other 'trial and error' people too - known working 2nd-init scripts or bootloader workarounds compatible with the image you get shoe-horned in may be adaptable with minimal fuss to the XT557D as well.

Hi, I was wondering if anybody has had any progress flashing an SBF to the XT557D.. i've been stuck in a boot loop for months

[Q] needs alittle help with root

So I picked up an ATT Atrix 4g the other day and I love it! Last cell's were a BlackBerry and before that an iPhone. Android OS blows those away. So I am the tinkering type and want to root and use custom ROM (greyblur). Currently I am upto date (version 4.1.83). From what I read here, I need to flash back to 1.26 via this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072). Installed RSDlite, passworded file, removed sim card, memory card, booted with RSD support, opened RSDlite, selected file (extracted to c:\GladRoot...also tried directly into c, Start. Created the image, it rebooted my atrix, and then the Status threw this message:
"Failed flashing process. failed flashing process. Phone did not re-enumerate after RAM-downloader was sent. (0x703E); phone disconnected.
Progress: Exectuded 100%
Result: FAIL
So was am I missing here? I am on version 4.1.83, but there is reference to 1.2.6 and 1.5.2...I assume these numbers are the firmware revision/version? So as I take it I need to "downgrade" from 4.1.83 to 1.26....? I am kinda lost here. Any help in the right direction would be great.
Look here to root your Atrix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060
1) Where can I verify that I am on 1.2.6 on my Atrix?
2) I ran the gladroot.bat as admin (win7 user) and got:
waiting for root access to kick in...
psneuter failed to execute properly
I extracted gladroot to c:\gladroot
Any thoughts?
Did you try to use Gingerbreak?
This is really easy, i got no problem with that...
Also, I think you need to install motorola usb windows driver to use rsdlite...
No I didnt try gingerbreak.
I do have the Moto USB drivers installed.
Settings>about phone>build number
Will show if you are on 4.1.26
When it comes to the psneuter fail, I had an issue with that too I believe. Try battery pull/restart. Make sure phone is fully charged. Make sure to right click and run it as admin. Other then that, I don't know what else to suggest.
Edit: if you have any system apps frozen with titanium backup, try unfreezing them and also make sure you have the home motoblur launcher unfrozen if you are flashing an sbf.

So what does this really mean? I used gingerbreak after superoneclick hung on psneuter. Phone rebooted after gingerbreak, but superuser app was nowhwere to be seen. I got cold feet and did a factory reset thinking this was all I needed to undo what gingerbreak (and superioneclick?) did. EasyTether now hangs when disabling to I think something is broken.
using gingerbreak to root is real simple I can't post a URL, but briefmobile has instructions on how to do so using gingerbreak. briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root
Gingerbreak and Gladroot are equally good. Some don't like Gingerbreak as it can wipe internal sdcard.

Perm Root not working

I followed multiple steps for installing perm root on a friends Mytouch and for some reason we could not get the s-off feature to work. I noticed too we do have SU access via adb or terminal but I still never could get s-off. After we got root we used rom manager to install clockwork and after the fact it installed 3.0.2 i believe it completely borked the recovery. I stepped it down to 3.0.0 and still had the same issue. The main reason i wanted to get s-off was to adb flash the recovery but I got a signature fail. Any ideas or suggestions to get this working correctly? Rom Manager will not let me install 2x cwm basically stating it can not install it period. I also tried the batch file root method same issue. Thanks for your help in advance.
Please look at the "True permaroot and S-OFF" thread in Development section, and execute step-by-step.
If your friend's MT4G is running Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3), you'll need to use Gingerbreak instead of Visionary+ to get root access.

If you are following the ./gfree method step by step it will root your phone.
If you are using the root.sh script and it's not working chances are you may have a bad eMMC chipset and it will not root properly.
I know HTC said they would be pushing a update to close the exploit hole that is used to root our phones but i don't think it's been pushed yet.

HTC isn't "becoming a Motorola". HTC, is completely different. We do have a locked bootloader. But it's easily unlock-able whereas Moto's aren't.

I don't know what to tell you. There are several threads out there regarding how to root your phone. Both in a .gfree form and a root.sh form. One of those 2 work for 99.9% of EVERYONE.
You might try finding someone who put together a .zip that can be flashed through the android recovery(white screen with boot options, etc.). Otherwise you can get the RUU and return to stock. After that follow the directions step by step and DO NOT mix methods. This should result in an S-OFF root, if you did your homework correctly.

As someone already explained before, when the security is on, no matter the amount of flashing you're going to try - it won't get you anywhere, since it won't be written to the actual ROM, and will be gone on restart.
Unless you pick a guide, follow it exactly, and post here everything that doesn't look proper - I don't think the forum can help you much.
Here's one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
Follow it and post anything that doesn't look good. Including your bootloader version.
The root is sticking on reboots but still no soff that's what i have been saying and i followed the guides to a t its not my first picnic rooting or roming a phone this one just has me stumped

What does your bootloader show when you boot into it?
For the root to stick after boot, you had to have S-OFF, otherwise the eMMC wouldn't have been written to.
Having no info from you, as I said, it's impossible to help. If all this thread is just a complaint - by all means, but in that case there's no point in helping you. If you want help - you need to provide enough details for people to help you. Obviously, nobody can figure out anything from "I can't get s-off".
I do a adb reboot bootloader and i get us fast boot up top it says s-on but if i reboot to the os i still have root access for instance in titanium backup or Rom manager of that helps any

Strange Root Issue

When I saw the port for ICS come out I got really excited and flashed it right away. Then I realized for whatever reason I didnt have SU permissions so I couldn't tether to my computer. I was disappointed but I thought, "no biggie, I'll just restore from my back up." When I flashed my back up the SU app was in my app drawer but I still couldn't tether. As a matter of fact I can't do anything that requires SU but the bootloader still reads unlocked. WTF?
I can't flash a new recovery either. I tried installing from ROM manager, I tried pushing it from my computer but I can't get to the recovery any more. ROM manager says that I have CWM 5.0.2.0 currently installed but I can't get to it at all. Again, WTF?

Thanks for not answering my questions. The bootloader is unlocked but I don't have root and I don't have access to recovery mode even tho ROM Manager says I have Clockwork Mod 5.0.2.0 currently installed. I cannot access the recovery mode AT ALL. I cannot flash or push a new recovery but it fully boots into Gingerbread w/o any issues. What is wrong with my phone and how do I fix it.

No suggestions have worked so far. It does not matter what the recovery image name is, whenever I try the flash it Terminal says that it cannot load "***.img" or if I try an install command it says that it cannot find "***.zip" I'm on a snow leopard iMac so I don't need drivers n such.
Let me pose the question like this, what would I do to completely restore the phone to factory condition and try to root it again? Like I said before, the bootloader says that it is unlocked but I do not have any root privileges, could not access the recovery I had before nor install a new recovery after having locked the unlocked the phone's bootloader again.

find yourself a one-click root method on XDA that includes superuser, busybox, and CWM.
EDIT: Also, double check the md5 sum for the CWM .zip. use
Code:
md5 recovery-aaaaaa.img
in the terminal and make sure the output matches whatever is given on the CWM site. if they dont have one up, ask for it

Cwm recovery issues

Hey guys, i have a few weeks experience flashing and all that leet stuff, but it seems i have a problem! I started to modify my ATRIX on 2.3.4, i unlocked sim, rooted, unlocked bootloader, and flashed custom recovery. I played around with a few roms, then i decided to update my fw to 2.3.6, well before i could do that i had to undo all mods so i ended up flashing a stock 2.3.4 fw and upgraded OTA. Im pretty sure that was my mistake... i may have needed an unlocked 2.3.6 sbf.. i re-rooted, and flashed cwm with rom manager, now when i go to boot in recovery mode i get failed to boot 2 starting rsd protocol. Everything is fine i just need to know where i messed up and how to get cwm running again. P.S. ive also been having an issue with my camera! I open the cam app and i get black screen, factory reset does NOT fix! Ive seen post's saying that the module is bad if that does not work BUT, when using flashlight app the flash lights up for a sec and then shuts off. When i switch to front camera it will stop responding, i'll click wait and after a min it will show image and i can take a pic(only with front cam). If i could get both issues solved i would be very grateful! If any other info is needed ill be sure to respond asap! Thank you in advanced for reading and assisting with my issues!

[Q] Rooted, soft bricked phone with locked bootloader

Basically what the title says.
I just want to preface this by saying I'm a beginner and I have no idea what I'm doing.
I tried to use safestrap and it did delete all my data but I accidently deleted my backup and my ROM I wanted to install.
Safestrap doesn't seem to want to work anymore. It gives me the screen saying that so and so is disabled and it will boot in 10 seconds, but I can't interact with this screen.
What can I do? Safestrap just doesn't work so I can't flash a ROM from SDcard, and the only thing that seems to work is Fastboot, and that's locked, so what are my options?

You can use RSD to flash the firmware from here http://sbf.droid-developers.org/ , you can use House of Moto http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/28162-house-of-moto-23/ , or you can update to stock KK (keep in mind you'll lose root on KK) http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/45495-how-to-xt907-upgrade-to-kitkat-ota/
