[Q]My nexus4 can't start up - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I installed the official update. After shutting down, nexus4 can't start up. Press the power button over 10 seconds, it also can't reboot. And I pressed the three buttons, it can't go to the bootloader interface. How can I get it start up again?:angel:

I had this when I did my update. It took a while of holding the power button to get it too boot again, try charging for already an hour then hold the power button for at least 1 min. Once I got mine to boot again I've not had any issues since when booting it up.

Thank you very much, but it still can't turn on.:crying::crying:

Hmm... Do you see red LED light flashing when trying to turn on your device? If not, try charging it for a little and it should boot afterwards.

yes, I saw the LED's red light, it sometimes last 7-8seconds somtimes 1 second.,:crying::crying:but what's that means. It's still doesn't work. I have no idea.

Then you may be out of luck. Take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011328
You can try leaving the phone on AC charger overnight. Some people have reported that they managed to fix their phones that way.
Was it the official OTA update you installed? I suppose your device was not rooted then.

My phone was on USB charge once ( actually plugged into the computer not the ac to USB issue people have been having) and because it thought it was charging it carried on as normal but the battery wasn't being charged fast enough by the USB to keep it running and the phone just died, no shutting down or anything dead with a flashing red LED the reason it did this was because the os thought it was charging even though it was discharging so until the battery actually ran out of juice the phone ploughed on. I immediately unplugged the USB and switched to the AC. The red light went off and the phone was silent for at least 10 minutes. I then with all toes and fingers crossed tried to start it again and it did. The red led lit up and stayed on for about 5 seconds and then burst into life. It really depends from how long you've had this red led if its been like it for a while I'd recommend a straight 24 ac charge with no interruptions. If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas :/ good luck Blewk

Does it happen to you guys?? It happened once, now it is happening again. Although I'm charging it, it doesn't turn on. Do you think my device is defective?

In my experience with Tablet like devices (such as the nook) when you let your device get so low on power it shuts itself off it can take quite a while before it'll turn itself back on, even when using the proper cables and chargers. I imagine this has to do with the fact the software wants to make sure there's enough power in the device to stop it from immediately shutting off again.
I've also seen this in my phone where when it shuts off it won't properly turn back on until it meets a certain charging percentage (unless I'm unplugging it, powering it on after it has a little juice and plugging it back in)

i believe ur charger might be defective....happened to me once nd it was due to the charger......not giving enough power to boot up the tab...i.e tablet discharging quicker than charging...

[Q] Runs directly from 5V DC?

Does Nexus 7 run directly from USB or charger power when connected to USB cable? Or is it so that the device continues to run on battery while the battery is simultaneously being charged? This is an issue related to the longevity of the battery. The easiest way to test this is to try and run the device on DC power while the battery has been removed. I have neither the tools nor the guts to check this out. Suggestions from anyone and everyone are welcome.

Humm... Interesting, it stayed on. If i restart without a battery it will actually restart to the home screen but then restart if u try to click on anything.
So I guess ignore my first post, these are different results then I got a month ago.

Battery settings shows "X" seconds on battery and that X never changes if the tablet is connected(to PC/charger), no matter what you are doing. I connected the tablet to PC front panel USB, switched it on, it showed 100% charged and 0s on battery. Now I fired up Stability Test and after an hour or so battery settings showed 95% charging, 0s on battery. Your and my findings establish a point, i.e. The USB power provides direct power to the tablet upto a certain wattage, beyond which- as in case of a demanding load- the battery also/solely provides power. The battery is always being charged in background if it is not already fully charged.

i've tried all the power + volume combos...how did you get to bootloader?
If people just let their phones charge undisturbed overnight and tried the next day to boot, that number would be -80%..
I bricked my N4 by accidentally flashing a wrong bootloader - a simple error that proved fatal!

That would brick basically any phone. You don't play around with flashing the bootloader unless you're sure.
Got the red light once while doing benchmarks.. But i was able to get into bootloader mode reflash system img.And bam i was good to go..
Dang man, this same problem is happening to the LG Optimus G. There is a thread on xda for that phone and the op says to take the back cover off, disconnect the battery then reconnect it and that fixes it. Maybe worth a shot on the nexus.?? That is if you don't want to reflash the phone.

Holy crap. It's literally IN THIS THREAD.
Leave it on your charger for several hours and see if it boots. If not, it's probably RMA time.
It's plugged for about 10 hours and nothing.
I live in Brazil, no sells here yet and it was bought on USA.

I was just mentioning other options just in case someone couldn't get into the bootloader. What if you send the phone to lg because you couldn't get into the bootloader to reflash and they can by disconnecting the battery and find out that you are unlocked and rooted when the phone boots back up, which would also void your warranty. Although I would not take the back cover off if the phone was stock, might as well send the phone back if you can't get it to boot.

Im wondering if what is posted Here may cause this issue?
Please, any advice will be thanked.

You seem to know very little about how chargers, batteries and charging circuitry works. To put your mind at ease, a USB 2.0 port is rated at 5V DC, 500mA. That will charge a Nexus 4, albeit slowly. Your 0.7A charger isn't going to fry anything, as there are multiple safeties built in, unless something is SEVERELY wrong with it, meaning faulty construction.

So you are telling me that, unless there is any issue with the charger (faulty construction) there is no reason to worry about that it will lead to this "Red light of death" or any other issue (lowering battery lifetime for example)?
This is totally off topic but, Do you (personally) think it's true what people say that charging a cellphone with a lower output charger increases its battery service?
Quick question:
Does this red light issue appear when battery is drain to 0% (among other factors)

There is no reason to worry unless the charger or your phone is faulty, in other words, hardware failure on either side. Unfortunately there would be no easy to foresee that.
The charging circuitry will only use what it needs to do it's job. As long as the voltage is within range and the current is not too LOW, you're OK. The N4 is rated at 900 mA to perform a standard charge. It will accept as low as approx. 500 mA to charge in USB mode. That idea is rubbish.

[Q] Nexus 4 taking FOREVER to charge

I've had my Nexus 4 for about 2 weeks now and currently it is taking a ridiculously long time to charge. It has been hooked up with the original USB to Micro-USB cable for about 3 hours at it went from 12% to 8% (wtf...) to 10% now and hasn't moved for the past hour. Someone help please
Try charging it from another charger it or a PC. Sounds like your charger is probably faulty.

Yeah you could try a factory reset. Failing that, re-flash the stock ROM. Failing that, RMA it.

I'm not entirely sure wether this is a "good" answer but are you charging by USB meaning plugged in your computer or laptop?
Because I've had it with several phones that if you put it in your laptop it doesn't charge or very very slowly. In the PC it goes faster but not as fast as straight from the wall.
Try plugging the charger in a wallplug, see if that helps? And also if you really want to charge by PC, flash a kernel (see Franco's thread) and put it on "Fast charge USB", then it should go at the same speed as wallcharged. (dunno how on stock rom)
-------------
If you meant that you've charged by plugging it into the wall in OP, then I'm sorry, I don't know Or just a faulty charger.

Do you have a custom kernel installed? Maybe there is a faulty setting in there. Worst case scenario is RMA, but try having the phone plugged in and then power the phone down. Once it's off, press the power button (don't hold it) and see if a battery animation comes up. If it does, then keep it plugged in for a few hours and see if it charges any faster...
try a different cable. For me, the cable went bad. when connected to the oem wall wart, my phone would sometimes be charging USB, sometimes A/C. After changing the cable (not the wart), always charges A/C now.
Install a battery utility and verify how much current it is drawing.

Brand new Nexus 4 not booting at all..

I'm from Belgium and yesterday I went to the UK and I bought myself a Nexus 4. I was so happy.. Untill I came home and wanted to boot this thing up. Nothing happened, so I plugged it in my computer to charge the battery. Instantly a red light turns on at the bottom of the phone, I thought it must be normal or something. I still couldn't boot it at this point. After a few minutes the red light went off, so I decided to try it again, but still nothing. I pressed the power button for like 30 seconds (also power + volume down) but nothing is happening. Am I doing something wrong? Could my device be faulty or something? If yes, then I got a little problem, it's not like the UK is next to my door..
Any ideas on this?
PS: It's been plugged in all night for charging, but still nothing.
You are not alone. Alot of users are having this problem. Try this > https://support.google.com/nexus/7/answer/2668668?&rd=1
its for Nexus 7 but applies to Nexus 4. If this method doesn't work, I would recommend it to return it to the seller and get another one if you can.
from above link:
If your tablet isn't charging properly, please confirm that you're using the charger that came with your Nexus 7 tablet. The Nexus 7 charger is rated at 2A, where as most phone chargers deliver a current of 1A or less.
If you're using a charger rated less than 2A, your tablet may charge very slowly, or may not charge at all.
Charge a drained battery
If your Nexus 7 tablet's battery drains completely, you can recharge it by following these steps:
Connect the charger to your Nexus 7, then plug the charger in to an outlet.
Press and hold Power until the device powers on, then immediately press and hold Volume Down (while still pressing Power). You will see the word Start with an arrow drawn around it.
Press Volume down until you find Power off, then press Power to select that option.
When your tablet is off, disconnect the charger, then reconnect it.
You should see a battery on your screen that indicates your tablet is charging.
There is a hard fix for it but its a little complicated. You have to open ur N4 and pullout the battery. That will fix the problem. Anyway follow the above method first.
I tried the first 2 steps allready without succes, will try the last step (after 1 hour unplug and replug). I hope at some point it will boot up...
Well, it didn't work, only solution is to bring it back.. because i'm not going to open this thing
Why don't you let it charge with the wall charger overnight and see if it works in the morning?

i bought a nexus 4 on Thursday ... i fully charged it on Friday night after it shut down ... and yesterday night it shut down again due to no battery ... i plugged it to my laptop to charge [i turned it on and it was ok] and left it there for the night ... this morning it was dead ... i tried the suggestion from google support posted in a previous post but did not work so far ... have you come up with another solution?

after about 4 hours connected to the charger i removed the microSIM card [i know this has nothing to do with it] and plugged it in again ... a red light started flashing and i was able to turn on the phone ... now it is working properly
Well, I have some news. I bought a power converter, so now it's plugged in the wall charger. The red light started to flash instantly, so I pushed on power + vol down and it got into bootloader for like 1 sec and then it turned itself off and the red light started to flash again. I'm going to leave it now for an hour or so and then try again.
EDIT:
I just tried again and went into bootloader and selected power off and now it's charging, finally! Thx for the help guys
