Suddenly have no sound EXCEPT in music players. - 7" Kindle Fire HD General

I'm rooted, no problems at all except I installed some notification and ringtone apps today and when I tried to listen to the ringtones, there was no sound. I tried Netflix and no sound. My music players are the only thing that still plays out loud. Oh, and my current notification sounds quit sounding too.
Any ideas where to look or a fix? Thanks!

kmodek,
There was a sound problem with the initial Kindle Fire HD 7" release, although the current
version has been perfect. Music and Netflix application calls to there own software sound controller, so
this may be the ICS controller that's failed. Take a peek by pulling down the bar, click on More, then
click on Sound & Display. Is the volume up here? How about Mute All Notifications, is that
checked? Is Dolby on? If yes, turn it off (just as a test). Does your sound come back?
If none of this works, send it back to Amazon for replacement, you may have an older
revision that was accidentally released (what is the serial number? This is under More>
Device>About).

My serial is d025 a0a0 2394 19j8
System version is 7.2.3_user_2330720
I uninstalled all the ringtone apps and sound came back for a couple of days but now it's gone again.

kmodek,
Contact Amazon, ask them to replace your Kindle Fire. It is defective, period.
The volume service does not come and go unless the Kindle is defective.
Sorry for the bad news. If it is out of Warranty, contact us, we service
the Kindle and are very reasonable.

Will they replace it if it's rooted? That's what I'm afraid of.

I've noticed this problem too, but I found that if I only change volume via the notification slider it doesn't happen. Stay away from sound managing apps that separate the the different volumes, that's what causes it for me.

Kmodek,
I am not Amazon, so all we can do is go by past experiences. Yes, in the past they have overlooked
Rooted devices and replaced the devices. The other option is to remove Superuser.apk from
/system/app - if you can not, which I believe you can not, then send it in, all they can say is no.
If they do say no, send it to us, we will get it to work. We are very reasonable and fair.

MadJoe,
We found a bug in Netflix and Hulu which both use there own Volume control Service. This sometimes
freeze and we have to exit the application and open the application back up, then the Volume Service
works fine. The fact that it does not work in anything but Music means he has a serious problem with
the Kindle OS. This can be fixed by obtaining a USB Factory cable, then Flashing a new system.img.

Download Quickmute app from amazon. Use it to reset all your volumes. worked for me when I lost sound due to some downloaded app.

Had the same issue. This was the solution. (Had to reboot to get it to work) Nice work!
I have also had issues where dolby turns off on its own. If i go into settings and toggle it the sound comes back louder than before, which is how I know dolby is back working.
Both of these issues make me wonder how CM10 will deal with dolby.

Removing Audio Applications in Status Bar (And That Annoying Headphones Icon)

Hey guys,
I noticed when I plug in headphones it pops that stupid little icon up saying "You have earphones plugged, want to launch mah crap?" and found it rather annoying. Especially because I use the Google Music app, and when you're playing music there's two pairs of headphones. Looks cluttered.
After a little snooping through system APKs for which one looks after that I found that it's called ContextAwareService.apk in /system/app/
If you delete this the audio applications area doesn't show up in the notification area as well as the headphones icon.
If you want to remove it, back up the APK first because I don't know if it stops anything else (I haven't noticed anything breaking). If you didn't back it up... you're lucky because I've attached the original APK.
Hope this helps someone, I saw people wondering if you can modify that list. I personally just wanted to remove it because I removed the Samsung crap and it was displaying an empty area and two headphones when I used the Google Music app.
You do need to be rooted for this, and my suggestion is to use Root Explorer if you don't know your way around ADB
i dont mind it i just wish i could change the garbage listed in it.
It can also just be frozen with titanium backup if rooted.
Can anyone confirm if this disables anything else?

Thank you very much! I can't get my head around why that icon even exists? I mean do we really need a reminder that we have our headphones plugged in? Are we that stupid?
Used TB to freeze that service and it worked great. Thanks again.
Now wondering what else gets affected by that service?

For those who have yet to root, you can also use the ICS Disable App function. Seems to work just fine for removing it. I would be interested in modifying the apps and use it, but until we can mod it, I will disable it.

If you go under Settings -> App Manager -> All -> And it's in that list, much safer and easier than TitaniumBackup and ADB, and it's easily reversible.

It's more of a preference, I don't like a bunch of icons at the top. Might be a little bit of a minimalist. I prefer to keep that area clean for notifications instead of notifying me that I have a headset/aux cable plugged in.
Long shot.
Do you know how we can get rid of the persistant connected to wifi in teh notification area?
It is not needed and steals from real estate.
Thank you. After knocking out the ongoing wifi notification and the annoying wifi pop-up, this was my last annoyance.
Now that I've frozen it with Titanium Backup, it's all good.

Go into settings, then application manager, then all and find it. If you click on it it will give you the option to disable it.

[Q] Skype will be the death of me [SOLVED]

I have a Nexus 7. I have root. No custom ROM; the most modding I did was adding a cool font. I have Skype. I have tried both the official version and the lasted SkypeMod. I have downloaded and run CameraLauncher.
Here's the problem: When I am in a video call, I can see the other person just fine AND I can see myself in the little box in the corner. However, the other person cannot see me. They just see a little circle going round and round like it's waiting for me to transmit.
I have verified all settings and that I can soot and record video. This is driving me mental and ANY help or thoughts that could lead me in the right direction are greatly appreciated in advance.
/onlyhalfthetime
have you tried re-installing the app?
try another video chatting application (Google+ Hangouts, GTalk) and see if they give the same issue. then youll know if its the app itself or some hardware issue

This is a good troubleshooting step and I will try it later today, but like I said I can see myself in the little box in the corner while skyping and I can run the camera app.

Rarely use skype but did try it on my rooted/stock nexus 7 and got exactly what you describe, video on nexus 7 but not on recipient's computer (only audio).
Could it be because you are rooted that causes the issue...... Like sky go you can only use if not rooted. Try using voodoo ota to temp hide root and then restart Skype.
Don't use Skype, not sure if affected by root. No harm in trying.

That is the version I am using too.
I realized today that I am a moron. I was only testing the Skype with one recipient. so, what if the problem was on their end?
Turns out, they were using a laptop with a mobile data card. I just used my wife's phone with the Skype app and all went well. video on both sides. :victory:
However!!! I need to continue testing because before I tried that I fund the advanced settings in SkypeMod that forces video calling! I checked Force-enable Video-calling, Force Camera Rotation, and Unlock Orientation.
Since I had to search high and low for someone with the same problem and no resolution, I understand how frustrating that can be. I will continue updating this thread and [SOLVED] it when I am satisfied that I got the answer for the people from the future.
/onlyhalfthetime
New info!
The SkypeMod makes skype work on my rooted EVO 4G! that's a two year old phone. I had long since given up hope of using skype. This is awesome. That is all.
/onlyhalfthetime
P.S. When I'm not poor (I got the nexus 7 for Christmas, haters), I'm gonna throw the dev a few shekels. :good:
It was indeed the other person's issue. No one else could Skype him either. That was silly on my part. However, I did uninstall SkypeMod and reinstall the regular app and got no video with anyone. Maybe because I'm rooted? Using SkypeMod I was able to skype anyone and they could see my video. Just make sure you go into the advanced settings and force enable video.
What an awesome apk. I am still floored that it works on my EVO 4g!
Marked thread solved. Have a good one, gentlemen and ladies. :highfive:

[Q] Music turns on when earphones plugged in - how to disable?

Whenever I plug in my headphones into Note-3, the Samsung Music app starts and plays. Personally, I prefer to not have it start. I usually use a different music app or audio book player.
Is there a way (presumably in settings somewhere) of disabling Music app from starting when earphones are plugged in?

I think there is a setting for it somewhere in the ROM itself, as I recall, but I always just completely remove the service with Titanium Backup.
There was a setting for it, but I can't seem to locate it anymore. The setting still exists in N7player though.
Mine doesn't do this, perhaps because I disabled MusicFX, Adapt Sound and Multimedia UI Service Layer? Or the setting in N7 enforces it?

[Q] Lost Sound

Hi Guys
This is weird. My shiny new Note 3 is about three weeks old. It's working 99.9% perfectly except for a slight sound problem. The problem is that when it is connected to a charging dock it USED to play a tone. Now it just vibrates slightly (but still charges). I also noticed that my camera doesn't make a shutter sound when I take a photo. I wondered whether the two issues are related in some way?.
All other sounds seem to be working OK on the Note3 (so it's not a volume setting) and I have checked whether option for the dock 'making a sound' is switched on. Additionally, there doesn't appear to be an option in the camera settings to switch on/off the sound, so it can't be that.
OK none of this is a major problem, but it is a bit of a niggle!
I hate niggly things! .
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

I use Root Explorer, those files are in system>media>audio >ui.
However, as far as I know you can't access the system folder unless you're rooted, so I think it's unlikely that you've deleted them.

is there a way to split ring volume and notification volume?

Hi i was wondering if anybody has any way of changing the ring and notification volume separately, this is a feature im missing coming from samsung is there any fix for this?
No, that's a new "feature" of Android 9. No separation anymore.
What I did was to download the sounds I use to my PC, lowered/raised the volumes where needed, and put them on the phone again.
I was just trying this same thing a few days ago, i swear i thought you could do this on older phones.
