[Q] Skype will be the death of me [SOLVED] - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Nexus 7. I have root. No custom ROM; the most modding I did was adding a cool font. I have Skype. I have tried both the official version and the lasted SkypeMod. I have downloaded and run CameraLauncher.
Here's the problem: When I am in a video call, I can see the other person just fine AND I can see myself in the little box in the corner. However, the other person cannot see me. They just see a little circle going round and round like it's waiting for me to transmit.
I have verified all settings and that I can soot and record video. This is driving me mental and ANY help or thoughts that could lead me in the right direction are greatly appreciated in advance.

have you tried re-installing the app?

try another video chatting application (Google+ Hangouts, GTalk) and see if they give the same issue. then youll know if its the app itself or some hardware issue

This is a good troubleshooting step and I will try it later today, but like I said I can see myself in the little box in the corner while skyping and I can run the camera app.
Thank you for your suggestions so far. I'll be back tonight with results.

I can't even get Skype to login here.

Thanks, but I've tried that one too. I must be doing something wrong because I can't find anyone else with this problem.

Rarely use skype but did try it on my rooted/stock nexus 7 and got exactly what you describe, video on nexus 7 but not on recipient's computer (only audio).

Could it be because you are rooted that causes the issue...... Like sky go you can only use if not rooted. Try using voodoo ota to temp hide root and then restart Skype.
Don't use Skype, not sure if affected by root. No harm in trying.

Maybe fixed?

That is the version I am using too.
I realized today that I am a moron. I was only testing the Skype with one recipient. so, what if the problem was on their end?
Turns out, they were using a laptop with a mobile data card. I just used my wife's phone with the Skype app and all went well. video on both sides. :victory:
However!!! I need to continue testing because before I tried that I fund the advanced settings in SkypeMod that forces video calling! I checked Force-enable Video-calling, Force Camera Rotation, and Unlock Orientation.
Since I had to search high and low for someone with the same problem and no resolution, I understand how frustrating that can be. I will continue updating this thread and [SOLVED] it when I am satisfied that I got the answer for the people from the future.

New info!
The SkypeMod makes skype work on my rooted EVO 4G! that's a two year old phone. I had long since given up hope of using skype. This is awesome. That is all.
/onlyhalfthetime
P.S. When I'm not poor (I got the nexus 7 for Christmas, haters), I'm gonna throw the dev a few shekels. :good:

It was indeed the other person's issue. No one else could Skype him either. That was silly on my part. However, I did uninstall SkypeMod and reinstall the regular app and got no video with anyone. Maybe because I'm rooted? Using SkypeMod I was able to skype anyone and they could see my video. Just make sure you go into the advanced settings and force enable video.
What an awesome apk. I am still floored that it works on my EVO 4g!
Marked thread solved. Have a good one, gentlemen and ladies. :highfive:

Rooted? Now what

Just want some feedback as to what other people were doing with their recently rooted incredible?
I removed cityid and installed wifi tethering which was the main reason I wanted root in the first place. I downloaded htc news widget API but I don't know how to install it.
I'm looking forward to seeing a flashlight app that utilizes the dual LEDs.

Try this one. Still a little buggy, but it works and the dev is still working with it to enhance it.

i saw it mentioned in another thread so i checked it out, Lamppu is a free flashlight app and it works great so far.
Only thing wrong with lamppu is that camera/camcorder doesn't work till after a reboot.
both work fine for me after using lamppu, no reboots needed

Great thanks for the input

Screencast or similar?

I apologize if this has come up before, I did search and didn't find anything. I'm looking for a tool that I can remotely control my phone via my windows desktop. I use my phone all day at work listening to music, etc...
I've downloaded the latest release of screencast, and am able to see my phones screen, but no keyboard/mouse input is working so I still have to control the phone from the screen on the phone.
It appears that other people are having the same issue with this app. Anyone got the screencast app working properly on the vibrant or have any other suggestions for different apps?
Thanks,
Jeremiah
What do you mean you downloaded the lastest version of Screencast? I dont see an app called Screencast in the market, only an app that accesses ScreenCast Online videos called ScreenCastsOnline.

Yep, device is rooted, other people are having the same issue. there are some work arounds other's are using, but didn't work for me. I just tried out vnc server for android and that worked ok, but no landscape mode. And I have to wake up my phone from the screen after it went out to be able to do anything with it, which defeats the purpose for me.
I guess I'll keep searching, the vncserver for android is pretty sweet though.
Been trying to get this, and droid explorer to work all day, with very little luck :/

Nexus One and 2.3.4 - Talk doesn't support voice or video

heya,
I've got the new 2.3.4 update for my Nexus One, and it seems that there's absolutely no voice or video support in chat.
Other people on the forum seem to have confirmed this as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061270&page=2
It seems like a pretty lousy move from Google.
On their blog post:
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2011/04/video-chat-on-your-android-phone.html
they specifically mention that Google Talk with video and voice chat will will launch on other devices in the future.
I can understand there not being video on the Nexus One, as there's no front-facing camera (although they could still support it, just with the rear camera...lol), but it seems like a pretty low move to leave the Nexus One in the dust like that with voice as well.
Does anybody know if this is perhaps a bug in the Nexus One update, or perhaps you need to do something to unlock the voice functionality?
Cheers,
Victor
Strange, because with just the normal gtalk app installed on my nexus one (2.3.3 CM7), i'm able to at least voice chat. A pretty lame move if it doesn't allow voice and video.
Seriously, no voice and no video. Google needs to just make a universal gtalk app and put it in the market. Oh well at least there are better alternatives on the market that work now like tango and yahoo messenger.
Has anyone tried manually adding the new talk/jingle lib? I doesn't seem like its included in the update. See here for a link/how to. I would start by copying JUST the lib (second to the last line)
Google just isn't going to bring video chat to phones without a FFC (they said so in the announcement which was pretty clear to me). It offers a pretty bad experience for the average user. Voice chat is certainly possible and there's no reason to not allow it. Hopefully they fix this in a future update and hopefully put chat in the market so they can update it more often.
Just use the app and lib from the Nexus S update. Problem solved.
I agree though that they should at least allow Voice Chat. The only reason I can think of for not doing it would be that it competes with Google Voice but considering that's only available in 2 countries in the world it's hardly what I'd call "widely available".

Yes, the slightly modified Talk2.apk and lib from the thread that we both linked to above works on the N1. There is no reason to only copy the lib as it would be useless without the apk since there is nothing in the old apk actually loading the lib and calling the functions it provides.
I wish I could say I used the Talk app and I cared about this... but I can't.
Yes! Who cares about gtalk I want bug fixes!!!

Cool! Do the 'other' things that didnt work in 2.3.3 work? Like being able to initiate a voice/video call from the pc? Or sending video?
Gapps 20110503 fixes everything. I can send video AND the other user can call me. Awesome!
CM7 nightly #60.
heya,
Hmm, interesting - so you're saying if I just install the gapps 20110503 package, I'll get Gtalk with voice/video support?
Do you mean the one from here?
http://goo-inside.me/gapps/
I'm on stock Android, and I'd like to stay that way for now. This package doesn't have any dependencies on CyanogenMod, does it? And it's not going to cause any other weirdness or breakages if I install that package, is it?
I thought that package was just the stock GoogleApps package that's split off as a separate download due to licensing restrictions - what difference is it to the one that's one my Nexus One 2.3.4 now?
Cheers,
Victor
I'm pretty sure you need to be rooted. I'm running CM7 nightly #60.
So that means that the hardware is capable of video chat for sure. we should write to google and ask the nexus team to give it to us, the official way!
It is 100% capable. Confirmed working on my N1.

I'm running a stock, rooted 2.3.4 OTA on my Nexus One and while it works, its only working on WiFi. Anyone else have this problem?
It says I need to be connected to WiFi to initiate a voice/video call. If someone else tries to initiate it, it'll tell me I missed a call because I wasn't on WiFi.
A buddy of mine has the Desire and its working fine on their 3G connection.
works fine here
works here too

I get the 'wifi required' message sometimes, but other times it works great.
Probably needs a good 3G/3.5G connection.

VTok Beta, New Gmail video chat app

For those of you that want to video chat with gmail, but don't want to wait for 2.3.4...
Vtok is in the market. It works pretty well on the Evo, but one of the weird things is: the application has a blank screen if none of your contacts (that can video chat) are logged in. You do not get a list of people that aren't logged in, and you don't get a list of people that are logged in but haven't updated to the latest google video chat.
I used it over 3g to test with my wife using her laptop, it worked well, pretty clear, but a slight delay. Check it out.
I tried this app. It's nice to see development but emphasis on the word beta at the moment.
Meh. Pretty cool. Wish I had more people to use this with though.
Does this thing use push notifications ? I refuse to use an IM app that doesn't. It's just unacceptable by today's standards.
I tried this over my home wifi, with my laptop and my EVO.
The image I saw on my laptop was good from what the phone was recording.
But my phone was receiving a horrible pixelated image from my laptop, which has a decent web camera.
Also my the image was upside down no matter which way I help my phone in portrait, but was fine in landscape.

**EDIT: just noticed i have OS 2.3.3 but running market version 2.3.4 ...i wonder if this has anything to do with my compatibility issues?

Xoom and Skype

Anyone else having problems with Skype?
I have a wifi Xoom with 3.2 stock software and recently installed Skype. When I first start a call I see my video but when they answer I hear nothing and the video disappears.

I've used skype a few times on my tablet, I've never had a problem with the video, the video seems to be the only thing that works pretty flawlessly for me. In all honestly I think the app its self has the problems and its not the xoom/software on the xoom.
The issues i've had mostly deal with my Bluetooth headset and skype. Sometimes it will send ringing to the headset, then it'll disconnect from the headset and put the actual call through the speakers, sometimes It wont even go that far. Once it actually let me complete a call with the headset but that only happened once. The other issue I had was Skype didn't want to let me accept a call from one of my friends. I could send calls but not accept. So I think the app its self is just borked.
Hello
Skype works fine till you update it from the market. This update seems to mess it up for alot of people myself included. You need to uninstall it and find a previous version and side load that.

Hello all,
Seen a few discussions after a quick google with skype, as I've been having problems with skype too! Video just drops as soon as I start a conversation. I've put it down to the app, as the same thing happened on my HTC Sensation!
Hopefully it'll resolve with an update! Fingers crossed!
It's the latest update that breaks it. Try using the one I've attached to this post.
Had to attach it as ZIP since the APK is over 8MB. Just unzip and install the APK.

After you've downloaded it, use a file manager (like file expert) to navigate to download in sdcard (your internal storage) and inside of the download folder, find the file you want to install, and then click on it. You should be given a choice to install apk or run package installer, choose whatever will install and you're go to go.
And don't forget to ignore updates until a new one comes along.
I hope everyone that's had issues has left a negative review on the market....
Thanks for this, I had the same issue. Installed the APK above. It gave me an error saying I needed to reinstall, but I let it uninstall itself, then went back in to EZ installer and installed it again and it was fine :S
If it has a keylogger I will hunt you down etc etc ...
Wonderful I will try installing this work around. Thanks guys, bought the xoom for xmas present for my wife to skype her brother and family in South Africa and video calls with Skype app would not work. Xoom itself is great quality bit of kit.
