[Q] Size of ext4-partition, space for apps - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hallo together,
this is my first thread in this forum.
I plan to install the NexusHD2-JellyBean-4.1.2-CM10 V1.3a [NativeSD] on my Leo and I have one principal question:
I must have two partitons on the sd-card, one ext4 and one fat32. Which of those two partitions is the one all android apps are stored/installed on? Is it possible that all apps are installed on fat32-partition? In this case a size of the ext4-partition of 2 GB would be sufficient. But if all apps are installed in the ext4-partition it has to bigger, hasn't it?
Is there an app that manages all apps to be installed on sd-card (fat32-partition)? Is app2sd the right application?
I hope someone can give me some useful advice.
Greetings,
kteamchief

Which of those two partitions is the one all android apps are stored/installed on? ext4, if you installed rom with dataonext
Is there an app that manages all apps to be installed on sd-card (fat32-partition)? link2sd
Is app2sd the right application? yes, but you need to flash a2sd script first
you should choose one of three line above
I prefer to dataonext

if the rom is nativesd, (it is) and you install it as nativesd, then there would be no point putting teh apps on teh fat32 partition, since they would already be on the faster ext partition anyway.
if you installed it as nand, then use a script to put teh apps/data on the ext partition, , teh fat32 partition is always going to be slowest.

[Q] what is app2sd and please can you help me activate it ? ?

what exactly is app2sd??
I am using RAFDROID ROM on a TMOUS HD2
in the instructions he said that if I am using a euro HD2 with 512 rom I should partition my sd card
so I did not do that and flashed the rom on my NAND
then when I started using apps I noticed that after two weeks usage I have only 50 MB left!!!!
so I want to activate app2sd and move my apps to the sd card..
so please I need some help from the experienced users on this great forum that can advise me about what exactly is this and how to activate and use it
thanks in advance!!
Apps2sd moves your apps to the sdcard, usually to an ext 3/4 partition. I don't know about the ROM you're using, but on the one I use (mdj's Cyanogen 2.6), you can move apps to external storage like this: settings --> applications --> manage applications. Then select an app and there is an option to move to sdcard.
@freeincolorado, the method you described is not A2SD+, that method is called move2sd.
A2SD+ puts the dalvik cache as well as the applications in a EXT2/3/4 partition, usually called the sd-ext partition. This method will still show you that the application is in the ROM. However, the sd-ext is used instead, depending on the chief implementing A2SD+ in their ROM, the remaining ROM space is suppose to report the partition "sd-ext" free space, however, certain ROMs are not properly done in my view, and will report the userdata partition free space instead. Such as MDJ's Cyanomodgen 7+ Gingerbread.
How to use A2SD+
Usually, they require you to partition your SD Card into 2 primary partition. The first partition is FAT32 where you store all your extras, such as music, ebook, etc (Like how your SD card is presently used). The 2nd partition is EXT2/3/4 depending on your preference, most people do not use EXT2 anymore as it does not support Journaling, since data can be easily corrupted with a battery pull. EXT3 and EXT4 contains journaling feature, so when battery is pulled, data corruption is minimal.
NOT ALL ROMS SUPPORT EXT4. This is a kernel thing, so if the rom uses a kernel that does not use EXT4, then it will not read the partition.
A2SD+ has a nice feature as well, when you switch ROM, you do not need to re-install all the applications, since all applications are placed in the sd-ext folder, including the dalvik cache. However, this also includes the system default applications which might not be compatible with another rom build.

Apps2sd

I have a rooted phone and have Apps2sd but can only move some apps to the sd card, can someone explain why they all cannot move to the SD card?
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Do you refer to stock froyo Apps2SD?
It can only be officially moved to sd if the apps built to do so.
However, u can force it using Titanium Backup or tools with similar features
I`m running the latest version of WildPuzzle rom, and have titanium backup but didn`t know it could be used to put apps to the sd card
with titnanium backup, menu->batch->move user apps to sd card. Then select which apps u want to move. Only use this method if not using widgets from the apps.
if you have ext partition, may want to try nice solution from Darktremor Apps2SD. Be sure to backup your rom before flashing it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925982
Hi many thanks for that. When you say only move apps that you are not using widgets from do you mean the ones that have shortcuts on the screen like messaging , dialler etc?
Sorry but i`m new to android and slowly getting my head around what you can do with it
It refers to applications such as: weather, clock ... if you hold down menu appears where you can choose the widgets, those applications should not be moved because the widgets do not work restart the phone, to be added again.
But you can try this "[ROM] [11.03] InsertCoin A2SD v0.2 Beta" (I use it and she looks like). He inclusively A2SD which uses the Linux ext2 partition, partition is not affected by the restart, widgets do not lose. Before installing this ROM you need to create ext2 partition on the sd card (512 mb enough), you can create the partition with: rom manager (market downoad) or Paragon Partition Manager if you use Windows OS. Format SD CARD WARNING LEADING TO LOSS OF DATA, CREATE A BACKUP BEFORE create partitions EXT2, FAT.
press the 1.2gb ext partition. Use that tool. I tried paragon, it is not working.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA Premium App
While restarting windows - software to complete the ext2 partition, it reactivated undeder Connect to pc disk drive option, in order to complete ext2 paragon manager. So running at me.

[Q] Partitioning MAIN NAND internal memory to fit build and give more data space?

Hello everyone,
is it possible to partition the MAIN memory (I mean the phone memory, not sd card) to fit the build I'm using perfectly? Like setting best size for boot partition, for system partition etc..., in order to have more space available for data internal partition?
I've found http://www.enfeuman.com/2011/06/01/how-to-fix-abnormal-internal-storage-space-on-htc-hd2/
but I really couldn't find an option in CMR to partition main memory.
If this is possible, can anyone tell me how? (I'd like it for my NAND ACA GB2.3.7 build)
And is it necessary to wipe the whole phone and do (flash) everything over again?

Wipe data
to set the partition sizes, try clk 1.6 and use fastboot commands to resize the partitions.
When you do this, you will have to re flash the rom.
Thanks, ill try that.

[Q] Move apps from sd-ext to NAND, then repartition SD card

Hi guys,
I've installed a CM7 ROM then installed S2E, then flashed an AOSP build to replace it. When I try to use S2E to move the apps back to NAND from sd-ext, it shows up in NAND in the first couple of boots, but later on goes back to sd-ext without S2E doing the job. I kinda figured that it's built into the ROM to move the apps to sd-ext.
What would be the safest way to move the apps from sd-ext back to /data/app, and then repartition my SD card into a single partition and use its whole storage capacity?
Thanks in advance!

try link2sd in the market,it's free, but once you've moved all u want to,boot into recovery and wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik, that MIGHT do the trick
one question, how do you want to partition your sd? i mean one fat or one ext partition? But seriously, one partition is a bad idea, i wouldnt recommend that.
@Ty5982, Thanks for the input! Will try that later.
@greg17477, I'm using Windows so I want to format it to a single Fat32 partition. What's your recommendation?
Partition ur sd card in recovery with 1gb and swap size 64mb,THEN,open link2sd and when u 1st open it,it checks your phone and sd card then prompts u were u want to send apps to,ext 2,3,4 or FAT 32,select FAT 32 as its what u want, then a error msg will appear, reboot, then open link2sd and now you've got your fat 32 lol

Won't that have moved his apps to a fat32 partition?
If I'm reading this correctly what the OP wants is to move his apps to NAND so he can format his sd card to its full capacity in FAT32, presumably so he can use it as a normal SD card (eg for a camera, moving files etc)
I personally use a very popular app called DarkTremors Apps2SD GUI, it comes preinstalled on a lot of custom ROMS. This app checks where your apps are when you launch it, and gives you the option to either move them to SD-EXT or back again. Launch APPS2SDGUI, let it check your system, then click 'Apps are on SD!' to move them back to NAND.
P.S. I don't think you can wipe the SD-EXT partition off the SD card using Windows' built-in formatter. There are lots of freeware apps that can and will do this though, google is your friend =]

@Ty5982, unfortunately it didn't work. It went badly and I lost the apps in sd-ext so I ended up restoring them..
@jwchips, thanks! Will try that one instead. Yep, I've read about the tools/apps that can be used to partition/format storage devices with EXT. Thanks again.

well i would recommend tu have 2 partitions, ext and fat. Just to be safe or prapared in case your want to try a different rom. Nowadayes almost every rom uses ext partition. And you won't run out of space, if you install some more apps.

I see. Thanks! Currently I have a 512MB EXT partition on my SD card. I thought I'd be able to choose which apps to move there but it seems my ROM automatically symlinks the apps installed to the EXT partition.
So I decided I want to just install the apps to NAND since I don't really install a lot of apps and I'm using a TMOUS HD2, just for an extra boost in performance compared to when apps are installed to SD-EXT. Then I'll just selectively move apps to SD.

ah ok, on TMOUS HD2 you might do not need an ext partition

That's what I've figured..
I might just back-up everything then re-flash and repartition my phone and SD card. Anyway, thanks everyone!

Hi, I hope you guys are still around, I´ve been looking for an answer and can´t find anything, heres the question I posted on another thread:
I´ve been having trouble with my phone freezing even after full wipes, so I´ve come to the conclusion my sdcard is corrupt.
So I want to go through the Gparted process to format and re-partition my sdcard.
Currently I have 16GB class 6, which has the recommended FAT32 and 1GB ext4.
Is it safe (or even possible) to format the sd card now. I tried with Gparted and only the FAT32 partition showed up???
The rom is runnymede aio which requires the ext4
Thanks

be sure to format both partitions as primary.

very low internal memory - american android 2.3.7 MAGDLR NAND

I have american android NAND MAGLDR installed in my HD2. But I have one problem with low internal memory.
Briefly: I have very low internal memory. About 50 MB only despite the fact that I have moved all my downloaded market apps onto my SD card. Preinstalled Android apps like MAPS, facebook and so on Im not able to move to my SD card. But there are still updates of this apps and Im afraid of that there will not be any free space for them in the while because 50 MB is really very little.
is there any option how to solve this problem?

Search in the american android thread about data2sd script or an a2sd+ script, when you get there, there should bin instructions on how to install it, as it varies for different roms.
Cheers,

I made ext3 partition cca 800 MB and swap partition cca 133 MB on my SD card by using MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition.
Then I have put my SD card into HD2 and by using MAGLDR I have installed american android 2.3.7 NAND.
But problem is it shows that my internal memory is still the same (as was before I made ext3 partition 218 MB total and 159 MB free)
I believed that when I create ext3 partition it will increase my internal memory. But it did only that some space from my SD card disappeared.
Could somebody explain me why is that, what did I wrong ?

Depending on the script you are using, internal memory wont show an increase. If you want to see if its working use titanium backup. The reason for this is different scripts use different symlinks and linked directories.

titanium backup dont show me anything like ext3 partition
I have no idea what I did wrong .. I did it in accordance with instructions witch was written in american android FAQ
could somebody tell me please how could I use a ext3 SD partition in american android 2.3.7 NAND? Im working on it 60 hours and I dont know what I do wrong because my android is not able to mount that partition:
here is what I did:
1. operating system wm 6,5 HTC HD2
2. flash MAGLDR 1.13 and choosed option 5. flash USB
3. run american android setup (ACA setup exe) and installed it
4. took my SD card 4GB and by using minitools partition wizard i created:
- HD2 partition, primary, FAT 32, cluster 32k
- sd-ext partion, primary, ext3, 800 MB
- linux swap, primary, 128 MB
5. then I insert SD card into HTC HD2 and restart
6. android, titanium backup, android commander are not able to detect any ext3 partition
7. Link2SD was able to detect this partition and install apps in there but when I restarted my phone all apps installed in sd2 partition just disappeared. So now link2sd just shows there is something on sd2 partition but Im not able to see it nor use it
could somebody tell me what I did wrong ?
How could I run data2sd script or a2sd+ script on american android rom ? (I have looking for it on the thread but I didnt find instructions)
or tell me another option how to free internal memory of phone for american android 2.3.7 NAND CM7,2
